Book Description
Machaelle Small Wright is a spiritual pioneer with the profound ability to "see" and "hear" the invisible forces of nature.
Her personal story is one of triumph, from a childhood of torment and isolation to discovery of her ability to communicate with the world of nature spirits and devas.
At "Perelandra," her 45-acre private nature research center in Virginia, Machaelle devotes her life to understanding and demonstrating a new approach to ecological balance:
* The foundation and development of co-creative gardening * The ecological effects of humans * The roles of the animal, mineral and plant kingdoms * Humankind's unrealized custodianship of Planet Earth
A book beyond theory, Behaving as if the God in ALl Life Mattered will excite the minds and capture the hearts of all who dare to dream of a dynamic world of harmony and compassionate living.

worth every penny, what ever the cost..!!!!!! Phenominal.......2006-08-30
We come to things in our lives on the path to enlightenment & greater understanding..at exactly the correct time for learning it, If we listen things will jump out at us to purchase ,learn, dig a little deeper for information vital to our own search... This is one increadable piece of that small amount of phenominal information out there for us to learn & understand..gain a greater knowledge of, there is so much to everything around us in everyday, in every place we are, we can only keep trying to strive to be better, listen harder, be quieter, feel the energy..pure raw energy of all life around us, that we are absolutly connected to... This book is by far one of the best Ive read & strongly recommend to any & all on a path of greater understanding of enlightenment & love...
Another Step In the Right direction.......2006-02-23
I expected another great book about nature's ability to communicate with life forms in more ways than we expect. Instead I got MORE! Influencing each other in ways once couldn't imagine, this book builds past the works of even Michael Roads (author of great works like Journey Into Nature). It is almost too advanced for me just now, but a book I will definitely go back to again and again.
Reads like a story (because it is) then builds. Another one to put in my top 10 best books, which I'll have to extend to top 20 soon!
When you're ready, it's a journey you cannot miss!.......2005-10-06
A down-to-earth and simplistic account of valuable insights shed on the relationship between humans and nature and how humans can interact with nature and/or the spiritual realms to bring about profound changes to the quality of human life. What a blessing life can be just so much easier if only we're willing to make it so!
I have to say though this isn't a book for everyone, I definitely did not feel ready until having worked with MAP after reading her other book "MAP: Co-creative white brotherhood..". Nonetheless, I would not say this for others. But as Machaelle says, if you're drawn to the book then there must be some part of your soul that will find wonders with it.

Book Description
In the role of elder and sage, David Brower describes the story of the earth's origins and evolution to three children. During six days the wonders of nature appear, including the sun, the rain, the first plants and moving creatures, and the dinosaurs. When Man appears in the final seconds of the sixth day, he begins to make choices that threaten the future of the planet, but the three children also learn there is hope.

A Great Book to Educate Your Children With!.......2000-10-04
I've long admired David Brower. And Aleks Petrovitch has done a great job illustrating this book and bringing David's thoughts to our next generation of environmentalists.
This is a good way to educate a child you know about the environment and why it is important.
I highly recommend it.

A good book for everyone aged 4 on up!.......2000-09-28
This book gives children who are beginning to understand minutes, hours and days a good idea of the enormity of time. The drama of the story is captured in drawings of intense colors and engaging images. Each page allows focus on one idea, which is clearer, for younger children. The interactions between David and the kids, and the kid's reactions, are good. The main idea -wildness has wisdom- is well emphasized: even the mysteries e.g. how life began. The additional information at the end is a good reference for older children. Also, places to help the planet is useful.
Science for kids.......2000-09-24
Aleks Petrovitch has done a wonderful job depicting early earth and portraying the evolution of life in a context easily understood by kids. By using an imaginitive story line with beautifull illustrations, this book is a must for parents wishing to provide initial insight into conservation, protecting our beaches and general history of our earth! Aleks has also provided a more in depth analysis to each page of his book which help refresh our sciences allowing each story reader to emphasize particular points and aide in explanation! Well Done!
beautifully illustrated, great for kids and adults alike.......2000-09-14
This book is an excellent example of a children's book format which can appeal to the gamut of age spans. The illustrations are remarkable, as is the story line itself. If you have children or wish you were a child (again) this book is an invaluable addition to your library. I recommend it to anyone who holds in their heart a place for special things.

Book Description

Book Description
An essential new guide for TEX usersTEX is a powerful typesetting language and processing environment developed by Professor Donald Knuth at Stanford University in the early 1980s. Its machine-independence has made it a defacto standard for text processing with microcomputers throughout the scientific and engineering communities. While there have been several TEX-based macro packages developed over the years, Modern TEX and its Applications focuses on the original macro package designed by Knuth upon which all other TEX programs are based-Plain TEX. All of the basic topics for understanding the TEX user environment are covered, including fonts and characters, formatting, math mode, macros, terminal and file operations, tables, and foreign language capabilities. A PC-compatible disk containing examples, extra typefaces and even a ready-to-run restricted version of TEX is included with the book.Modern TEX and its Applications is an essential guide for all scientists, engineers, technicians, and support staff who prepare technical text and documents using a version of TEX.

Book Description
This irascible genius, this diminutive egghead scientist, known to the world as “The Thinking Machine,” is no less than the newly rediscovered literary link between Sherlock Holmes and Nero Wolfe: Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, who—with only the power of ratiocination—unravels problems of outrageous criminous activity in dazzlingly impossible settings. He can escape from the inescapable death-row “Cell 13.” He can fathom why the young woman chopped off her own finger. He can solve the anomaly of the phone that could not speak. These twenty-three Edwardian-era adventures prove (as The Thinking Machine reiterates) that “two and two make four, not sometimes, but all the time.”
Customer Reviews:
Edwardian crime stories as recommended by Harlan Ellison.......2004-04-28
This book of short stories with a foreword by the great science fiction writer, Harlan Ellison, is centered on one story, The Problem of Cell 13, which was first published in The Boston American in 1906.
Harlan Ellison's twelve-page introduction is entirely honest about the merits of the book. He first met the The Thinking Machine, Futrelle's brainy protagonist, when he read The Problem of Cell 13 as a boy and fell in love with this beautifully-crafted little puzzle story. Futrelle's other stories are distinctly ho-hum and Futrelle himself lost his life when the Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg in 1912.
The ONLY reason for reading this book is to explore crime fiction as it existed in the Edwardian era. But that's a very good reason and you have Harlan Ellison's word for it.

Book Description
They were history's most famous and ferocious warriors. From the Huns to the Mongols, successive waves of nomadic horsemen swept out of the great steppes of Central Asia and wreaked havoc on the static civilizations of Europe, India, and China. How were they so successful? And, what were the limits of their powers? An esteemed professor--who specializes in Arabic and medieval studies--reveals just how "underdeveloped" societies spawned such great generals, from Attila to Genghis Khan; how nomadic Arabs swarmed from the desert in the 7th century to carve out an empire that stretched from Spain to the Chinese frontier; why the Mongols failed to conquer Europe; and where those unique, seaborne raiders, the Vikings, fit into this story.
Customer Reviews:
Nice survey, well illustrated.......2003-08-29
In this large format book, Kennedy gives us basic overviews of how some nomadic societies dominated neighbors through their proficiency in war. He covers Attila and the Huns, the Arabs during their period of expansion, the Turks, Genghis Khan and the Mongols, and, strangely, the Vikings. Kennedy tells us that all adult male nomads were potential warriors; there were no civilians in these societies. He gives particular attention to the Mongols, devoting two chapters to them but only one each to the other groups. The chapter on the Vikings seems somewhat out of place, as they were not nomadic.
Most readers will gain new insights from these surveys. Kennedy's writing is fluid and readable, though not elegant. The book is well illustrated with color plates, colored maps, and black and white drawings. The maps of key battles are particularly well done.
Quality work, but..........2002-10-29
Mongols, Huns and Vikings is another well written, well researched installment in the Cassell's History of Warfare series. The author, Hugh Kennedy, does a fine job of weaving comprehensible language into a serious, scholarly endeavor that keeps the reader hooked. The illustrations, maps and diagrams are excellent visual aids, particularly those 3-d battle graphics which effectively buttrusses textual decriptions of certain battles mentioned in the book. So, what's the problem? Well, I won't call it a problem. Let's call it a concern. Considering the extent of the Mongols' domain during the 13th century, and how successful they were at wedding undaunted ferocity on the battlefield to a keen strategic and tactical acumen that would win them 20th century admirers of the likes of Rommel, I am concerned that the author did not choose to focus exclusively on them. Why does he have the Mongols sharing space with groups of lesser military accomplishments? Maybe such a decision was not the author's perogative, but a desire of the editors of the series. I don't know. In any event, there is not enough literature, at least that I have been able to ascertain, on the Mongols. And for a formerly disparate bunch of hard scrabbling nomads who later went on to forge the largest contiguous empire in history, the Mongols' low profile on the historical landscape is questionable. Again, I don't dispute the book's style or the accuracy of its content; I just wish there could have been a singular focus on the Mongols.
Armies in Search of a Country.......2002-10-28
Hugh Kennedy's "Mongols, Huns & Vikings" is the latest installment of Casell's History of Warfare series, a multi-volume collection edited by the Britsh historian John Keegan. The book is a bit mistitled--Arabs and Turks command more of the author's attention than, say, the Vikings--but it is still an interesting survey of nomad warfare in the Dark and Middle Ages.
Kennedy explains why, for 1,000 years, the nomads were so successful in their wars against civilization. They had incredible mobility, so that they could outmaneuver their opponents in battle. If things went badly, they could quickly vanish into the desert, steppes or ocean from which they had come. They were very tough and lived off the land, so they did not need long supply lines. They had capable leaders, who led because of their skills rather than because they were members of an established nobility. And they were an army in search of a country: every male in the nomad population was likely to be a skilled warrior, whether that meant firing an arrow from the back of a pony or swinging a sword on the deck of a ship.
For nearly 1,000 years, the nomads threatened the civilized world. But though they were very successful, surprisingly little is known about them: it may be true that history is written by the victors, but it is just as often the case that history is written by the people who can write. Because nomad societies tended to be illiterate, their history was usually told by their horrified victims.
And their victims had plenty to be horrified about. As Kennedy makes clear, the Mongols, Huns and Vikings had a very well-deserved reputation for cruelty and ruthlessness. The nomad threat began to wane only with the emergence of gunpowder weapons, which could not be easily obtained by nomads but could be produced in abundance by stable societies.
"Mongols, Huns and Vikings" is a reasonably well written, informative and well-illustrated survey of the rise and fall of the nomad warriors. The battle maps, in particular, are quite well done and very clearly lay out what is known about how several decisive battles were fought. ...

Book Description
This is the story of some of the most famous and ferocious warriors in history. From the Huns to the Mongols, successive waves of nomadic horsemen swept out of the great steppe lands of central Asia to wreak havoc on the static civilizations of Europe, India and China. How were they so successful? What were the limits of their powers? Professor Hugh Kennedy reveals why such 'undeveloped' societies spawned great generals from Attila to Genghis Khan. He explains how the nomadic Arabs swarmed out of the desert in the 7th century to carve out an empire that stretched from Spain to the Chinese frontier, why the Mongols failed to conquer western Europe, and where those unique, sea-borne raiders, the Vikings, fitted into the story of kingdoms versus nomads.

Customer Reviews:
Send this book to everyone!.......2001-12-03
For those of us who are passionate about saving the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge this book presents our best arguements -the stories are from the heart and the mind, and address so eloquently the importance of the fight we are waging. For those who are unsure about the current fight over oil exploration and oil drilling this is a must read - the words here explain why there is no such thing as safe oil drilling because it is the human imprinting that will destroy this sanctuary. Buy the book for friends and use it to encourage support for the continued protection of "America's Serengeti."
Praise for Arctic Refuge.......2001-08-07
Discover Magazine, August 2001: "In short (and sometimes quite moving) essays and poems, scientists, native Alaskans, and former U.S. President Jimmy Carter warn against drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge."
San Francisco Chronicle, March 28, 2001: "...half a dozen of America's finest nature writers, our most distinguished ex-president and several members of the Gwich'in tribe are expected to gather on Capitol Hill and deliver "Arctic Refuge: A Circle of Testimony." If it succeeds, it may prove the most important book published all year."
Drilling in the biological heart of the Arctic Refuge.......2001-08-05
The president and vice-president along with the House of Representatives and a host of unindicted co-conspirators in the oil industry have proposed to explore and drill in a pristine 1.5 million-acre coastal plain in northeast Alaska. It is the calving grounds for the Porcupine River caribou head; a critical onshore polar bear denning area; one of the last available ranges for wolves, numerous fish and other wildlife and, as importantly, home to the Gwich'in Indian tribe which depends on the caribou for food, clothing and spiritual needs. This area has been described as the biological heart of the Arctic Refuge. The book is a collection of essays dealing with the dangers of drilling in ANWR written by some of the best and brightest individuals addressing the issue. There are radicals and prgmatists, advocates and experts, wildlife biologists, Native Americans, environmentalists, and former workers in the Alaskan oil industry. Contributors include Jimmy Carter, Barry Lopez, Rick Bass, WEndell Berry, Bill McKibben, Art Davidson and 25 other thinkers and doers that will make you wonder about not only this proposal but our so-called energy policy in the U.S. Jimmy Carter gives a presidentail perspective on the importance of preserving the Refuge which was created under republican president Eisenhower in 1960. R. Glendon Brunk writes of his experiences working on the north slope and tells of the effects of such oil exploration and drilling on the environment which is chilling and perhaps prophetic for ANWR. Faith Gemmill has a moving essay on the religious importance of the caribou to the Gwich'in Tribe and culture. I will not soon forget Sarah James recounting of British Petroleum's sensitivity to the Gwich'in tribes concerns: "It is inevitable that these Gwich'in people will have to change." Kim Heacox writes of Stephen Ambrose's visit to Alaska and his position that restoration of nature must be the theme of the 21st century. Not exactly a tree-hugging, radical this Ambrose guy. The book is important not only for its defense of ANWR but for the proposition that it is truly time to begin moving toward a sustainable energy policy in the U.S. Issues such as global warming, the need to preserve this tryly magnificent place, and the possibilities for a sustainable energy policy are all included. It is a perfect example of environmental issues being more that political issues. There are cultural, artistic and historic issues and this book will provide the reader with a wide range of ideas and proposals from many who view the world through other than political, or profiteering, lenses. There are no scare tactics or doomsday predictions here. Just an attempt to give a voice to a place that relatively few Americans know or have visited but is worth saving for future generations looking for one of the last best places. This is one of the most important books of the year. Highly recommended. Milkweed Editions is to be commended for making it available at such a reasonable cost and in a most timely manner.
