2 out of 5 stars Hard to finish........2007-07-26

Of all the books on Bigfoot that I have read, this one was probably the most boring. He went from one account to the other without any thoughts of his own on the accounts. I like reading other peoples accounts but in this book it was almost like reading the same stuff over and over again. I think anybody can write a book by taking the words of others and putting them on paper without much input of your own and this is what I believe this is.

3 out of 5 stars Just Okay.......2006-07-14

Okay for a beginners first look into sightings throughout the country, but somehow I almost found this book boring. After reading most works by true researchers like John Green, Rene Dahinden, Loren Coleman, and Grover Krantz, nothing here seems to be taken from the author's actual files. Just rehashing what others have already personally researched; interviews others have taken the time to do; field work others have been doing for years, even decades. Search the internet and you can find numerous stories from individuals all throughout most states, especially the BFRO website(The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization).

This book offers very little personal insight, and nothing new to broaden our horizons on the subject. I only rate it as high as 3 because many will be reading these stories for the first time.

5 out of 5 stars bigfoot across america.......2006-03-16

I really liked this book for I found the Author did not try and write this poetic, one dimensional, flashy book. He kept it simple in it's reading design. Story after story of Bigfoot sightings, and tracks. Most in the witnesses own words. There is a chronological format by date the Author adheres to as well as by State by State. I was facsinated, scared, curious, perplexed, amazed all in one. I especially liked the newer dates on sightings. I recommend this book highly for your Bigfoot library.

A great book with intersting facts, the book will keep your attention. Eric J Mazzi PA.

2 out of 5 stars 2 stars and that's being generous.......2004-02-10

If you have a small interest in the phenomenon of bigfoot, this is most likely the book for you. If you have any greater interest the subject, this book could added to your collection but overall, it's mediocre at best and pretty bland.

The book nearly kills itself if you take a look at the references to the near 400 sightings the author cites. Of the 399 sightings that Rife collects, nearly half (about 175) of them are from "internet postings" so who knows how valid they may be. He also gleams subject matter from magazines like Fate and Saga and numerous UFO magazines. He continues on by snipping from other peoples work. The author doesn't offer any personal thoughts and the inclusion of the stories lacks any luster to them as he glazes over the purported occurances. Rife makes no claims to actually validating any of the stories, meaning he apparently just gleamed them off of websites with no apparent research or interviews with the actual "witnesses".

Rife pretty much follows a systematic and rather boring format throughout the book by basically covering every state in America and giving 3-8 occurrences for each state. The books text is only 183 pages cover 399 sightings ... do the math. A vast majority of the recountings are barely five sentences long and are often a simple three line paragraph. The book has no apparent research, interviews, or in depth interest in the matter of bigfoots. The stories seem to central on three encounter types: the 'peeping tom' bigfoot, 'car bouncing' sasquatch, and the 'roadside runaway' creatures.

Sadly, throughout the book, Rife seems to focus on very aggressive and hostile bigfoots that charge, attack, and menace people. There are an awful lot of stories ending with the 'victims' taking potshots at the creatures with their guns. The sasquatches throughout the book vary little in description, almost like the author used the words "black brown hairy manlike ape seven feet tall" in a search engine and then gathered up the hits.

There's just too many Internet posting reference stories in here to make this a valid book for any type of research. There's no original thought and the stories lack credibility. Virtually anyone (even you) could have "written" this book if you had access to a computer by using a search engine for bigfoot stories. Rife is also extremely careful not to mention any names even though any bigfoot enthusiast will easily recognize numerous stories... maybe he was avoiding some copyright or permission to use someone's name.

Overall, if you want a lot of simple encounter stories that may or may not be true, then get the book. If you want something on which to base an in depth thought provoking research, skip it. You definitely don't want to use this book as a basis for any type of research paper, as a many of the reports are internet postings. Good for your bigfoot book collection, not good for any stimulating reading.

Sorry for the beating I gave you Mr. Rife

                          Book Description

1932. Alchemy has appealed to the imagination of man for centuries and is evident from the prominent part it plays in the legends and romances of the past. At its dawn, alchemy was regarded as a divine and sacred art, enveloped in mystery, that was only to be approached with reverence. Its adepts held its secrets inviolate, enshrouded their operations with symbolism, and gave their materials fantastic names so as to conceal their identity from those outside the mystic cult. In this volume, Thompson unravels these mysteries and presents his findings to the reader. Handsomely illustrated.

For anyone wanting to acquire a basic understanding of the history of alchemy, the basic concepts and beliefs that defined it, and the men who were its primary practitioners from the medieval period through the Renaissance and even surprisingly the Industrial Revolution, this is a good place to start. This book was originally published in 1932 but still holds up well as an introductory account. Thompson's prose is very clear and straightforward, is easy to follow, and is accompanied by numerous illustrations taken from the relevant periods. His descriptions of the alchemists' laboratories and their equipment - from alembics to pelicans - are vividly detailed. He also covers the two great goals of the alchemists - the Philosopher's Stone and the Elixir of Life - in such a way that the reader can understand what they were after and why they never even came close to achieving them. And the anecdotal tales of the alchemists themselves are fascinating, from those who were sincere in their beliefs and efforts to those who were nothing more than con-men. While no alchemists actually turned lead into gold, Thompson shows how some did make discoveries of value like phosporous and the technique for making Dresden chinaware, not to mention ultimately forming the foundations for the science of chemistry and for the use of chemical preparations to treat medical ailments. The book was originally published in 1932 and is far from the ultimate word on the subject, but again it is a good place to start from. Definitely recommended in that context.

                              Book Description

How did you first learn about sex? If you grew up in the 1970s, it may have been from a gleefully lusty tour guide named Xaviera Hollander

In the late 1960s -- that era of sexual chaos, when Playboy Clubs and love-ins were competing for national attention -- a beautiful, intelligent young Dutch secretary named Xaviera de Vries moved to New York, grew swiftly tired of her desk job . . . and soon became the most visible and glamorous madam the city had ever seen. As Xaviera Hollander, she published a shockingly candid account of her life behind the brothel door. The Happy Hooker shot straight to the top of the bestseller lists, sold more than fifteen million copies, and made this enterprising young woman an international phenomenon.

Thirty years later, these delightfully explicit tales of the '60s and '70s swingers' scene -- including countless jaw-dropping stories of lesbianism, bondage, fetishism, and more -- remain as titillating as ever, charged with the mix of shrewd observation and uninhibited appetite that made Hollander an irresistible storyteller. The Happy Hooker is a classic: the world's greatest book on the world's oldest profession.

4 out of 5 stars HOOKED ON SEX AND... LITERARY SEXCESS!.......2007-09-30

Anyone who can sell well over 15 million copies of their book, must have something going for them. In Xaviera Hollander's case it's SEX! SEX! SEX!

That subject always seems to sell, but what makes THE HAPPY HOOKER such a sinful delight, is just how much she enjoyed her work as the world's most famous madam and ever active prostitute. As so thoroughly and often clinically described, she really knows how to turn on both men and women and even both at the same time. And because of that she was bound to attract the attention of the not so understanding competition and the police.

In 1960's New York, police corruption was rampant to say the least, Xaviera's co-author Robin Moore certainly knows that subject from having written THE FRENCH CONNECTION. I imagine he helped with that side of the book whilst MISTRESS Hollander concentrated on what she knows best. Her customer's tales and fetishes, their needs and demands, may not be everyone's cup of tea, but theres plenty on offer here for any reader whether at bedtime or on that break from work. Numerous studies show prostitution should be fully legal, controlled and regarded as any other "service" industry. Of course we're a long way from that happening. But pornography took a while to be fully accepted and look how well thats done, specially on wall street. Don't forget illegal gambling, off-track betting and the numbers racket and interest only loans becoming legit as well.

Where would the everso righteous politicians be without the sex for sale industry. Xaviera's financial climax came in writing this book, not from running her brothel which at best had a hard job breaking even, what with all the police raids, lawyer exspenses, payoffs and bad debts she had to contend with in her business. As she saids and then there are the clothes`for the "sissy boys", the whips and chains, condoms, bed laundering and all that lubricant. With all that in mind, how how many of us can truely say we enjoy what we do? THE HAPPY HOOKER is both horny and honest about what she once did.

                              5 out of 5 stars A genuine auto biography.......2007-05-19

Perhaps this is my second time to read it after more than 15 years. It has always impressed me.and i wonder how how a human being could express this level of honesty to tell the most private life which most of us are ashamed even to think about telling. I feel very few tell such story and is quite natural to be like her acording Freud'view.More over it is written in splendid literary flow and i really appreciate her for the top level work she produced for the reader.

3 out of 5 stars Trashy but Readable.......2007-04-12

I read this book at a friend's house in the 1970's - so many of us high school buddies grabbed it off his bookshelf that he barely noticed. There's even an autobiography interspersed between the pages of gratuitous sex, as Ms. Hollander describes her upbringing in Holland, and her life as a prostitute and madam in New York City. Then, ofcourse, comes more descriptions of her escapades with men, women, couples, etc., in those days before most people worried about safety. This book may be less stunning in today's era of DVD and cyber-porn, but that doesn't exactly elevate it to literature. Still, it's readable style helped sell 15 million copies, leading one to surmise that trashy books have an erotic effect on more men and women than will admit it.

5 out of 5 stars I could not put this book down!.......2006-11-10

This book is a sexy classic. As a sex worker in New York, I found this book to be truthful and entertaining at the same time (although dated in many respects). You will find yourself liking her because she never feels sorry for herself and truly loves the business. She is street smart, funny, and feminine with no apologies. It's too bad they made such a bad movie adaption - I would love to see another one made!

5 out of 5 stars A great read; valuable for its place in history.......2005-11-17

As a modern twenty-something who wasn't even born when this book first came out in 1972, I enjoyed picking up what is undeniably a part of the history of American sexual culture. I tried to keep in perspective how shocking this book must have been in the 1970's, before our bookshelves and televisions were plasted with frank talk about sexual health and sexual deviance. To me, the opening lesbian girlhood fantasies and the nymphomania (of course all prostitutes love sex) seemed cliched, but I don't doubt Hollander's account of her early sexual life and introduction to the profession.

Hollander had an fascinating life growing up in Holland and moving to America. She was well-educated and very intelligent, and she eloquently explained how a girl of her breeding could become absolutely trapped and imprisioned in an abusive relationship. Her insight on that relationship alone makes this book a worthwhile read.

The book is a true page-turner as Hollander describes her sexual escapades in New York and the ways in which she earned money on her trip to Mexico. Hollander explains all the ins and outs of the high-end prositution business and the complicated formal relationship hookers have with their madam. The end of the book becomes a business treatise on the prostitution world, and it makes for compelling reading.

                                  Book Description

From the award-winning author of Out of Order—named the best political science book of the last decade by the American Political Science Association—comes this landmark book about why Americans don’t vote.

Based on more than 80,000 interviews, The Vanishing Voter investigates why—despite a better educated citizenry, the end of racial barriers to voting, and simplified voter registration procedures—the percentage of voters has steadily decreased to the point that the United States now has nearly the lowest voting rate in the world. Patterson cites the blurring of differences between the political parties, the news media’s negative bias, and flaws in the election system to explain this disturbing trend while suggesting specific reforms intended to bring Americans back to the polls. Astute, far-reaching, and impeccably researched, The Vanishing Voter engages the very meaning of our relationship to our government.

3 out of 5 stars An honest but inadequate effort.......2004-08-24

Dr. Patterson's book is, as far as I'm aware, the only serious analysis of non-voting in America that makes any effort to address the usual (and false) idea that our high rate of non-participation is somehow harmful, divisive, detrimental to democracy, etc. He presents another point of view, but devotes less than 4 pages to it; in the rest of the book he shows the same bias as other writers. Still, credit where credit is due; the book would be worth reading for this fact alone.

3 out of 5 stars Want to know more about voter turnout?.......2002-11-23

In response to the reviewer who wants to know more about voter turnout, especially the impact of the Motor Voter Act and election day registration, I recommend the recent book by Martin Wattenberg -- Where Have All the Voters Gone?

1 out of 5 stars What is new here?.......2002-11-20

This book is a real disappointment. Patterson seems to think that footnotes compensate for real thought. There are almost 700 footnotes for a book that is substantively less than 200 pages. He seems to substitute polemic liberal nostrums for substantive debate about an important issue for our representative form of government. If that is what passes for scholarly treatment of an issue - then scholarship has declined.

There are some interesting and challenging issues about why voters seemingly do not wish to participate. A primary analysis would be to understand whether the almost compulsive registration efforts like Motor Voter - are efficacious policies. California voters recently rejected a measure for same day registration even though the pro side out spent the anti side by several fold.

It would have been interesting and useful to go through the expected benefits of making registration as easily available as shopping coupons. But this book does not do that. It would also have been helpful to think a bit about the decline in party registrations - as participation rates have seemingly declined so have party affiliations. What is the relationship of those two things?

The role of campaign consultants is also glossed over. We have created a generation of consultants who believe driving down turnout is a good idea. I would have liked to know more about substantive ways to control those problems.

The book concludes with a section of proposed reforms. Here I rest with the Tammany Senator Conklin who had a tremendous disrespect for "reformers" especially ones that relfect little about the complexity of our society at the present time. Each of the solutions might be a good idea but there is little substantive argumentation to defend the solution. For example, there are plenty of good arguments against the Electoral College - although there are also some very good arguments for its retention - but Patterson just trots out the one alternative without ever putting the solution in context.

One would hope that someone would take another bite at getting these kinds of issues on the table for a serious discussion.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Invisible Men?.......2002-10-21

This is a good book to read on its own terms, and after _The Right to Vote_ by A. Keyssar. The disastrous slippage of voter participations, after so much struggle to achieve political power, needs the point by point of social analysis given here, and also the context of its overall history. The author explores many factors in the problem, media bias, primaries, the excessive length of campaign process, along with negative tactics by candidates. A southpaw cynic will surely be suspicious there is always some invisible factor of, yes, 'class struggle' in such an outcome, although it is not quite clear how the dynamics operate in this instance. Part of the problem is impotence, hence indifference to the impotence of statistical gestures. Another is the passivity with respect to 'net information' available to the statistical citizen: how many citizesn even know how their system functions? And how many educational systems really convey to citizens this 'how'?
Still, the question reamins up in the air, and is in part a function of a greater history. The great experiment in representative democracy is barely two centuries old, and systematically tried for the first time in that regard. Therefore, our stance should be one of studying an outcome in the experiment of democracy rather than its instant creation by a constitution. We may only be in the first stages of this evolution. This work is eloquent on all the issues, and a manual of operations, or at least worry, with respect to a looming crisis of human political freedom.

                                        Book Description

Today's natural resource managers must be able to navigate among the complicated interactions and conflicting interests of diverse stakeholders and decisionmakers. Technical and scientific knowledge, though necessary, are not sufficient. Science is merely one component in a multifaceted world of decision making. And while the demands of resource management have changed greatly, natural resource education and textbooks have not. Until now.

Ecosystem Management represents a different kind of textbook for a different kind of course. It offers a new and exciting approach that engages students in active problem solving by using detailed landscape scenarios that reflect the complex issues and conflicting interests that face today's resource managers and scientists. Focusing on the application of the sciences of ecology and conservation biology to real-world concerns, it emphasizes the intricate ecological, socioeconomic, and institutional matrix in which natural resource management functions, and illustrates how to be more effective in that challenging arena.

Each chapter is rich with exercises to help facilitate problem-based learning. The main text is supplemented by boxes and figures that provide examples, perspectives, definitions, summaries, and learning tools, along with a variety of essays written by practitioners with on-the-ground experience in applying the principles of ecosystem management.

Accompanying the textbook is an instructor's manual that provides a detailed overview of the book and specific guidance on designing a course around it.

Ecosystem Management grew out of a training course developed and presented by the authors for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service at its National Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. In 20 offerings to more than 600 natural resource professionals, the authors learned a great deal about what is needed to function successfully as a professional resource manager. The book offers important insights and a unique perspective dervied from that invaluable experience.
