Book Description

This is the story of Bernard and Françoise Moitessier's honeymoon voyage from Europe to the Pacific and back by way of Cape Horn. Setting out from Tahiti, they took the 'logical route' back because it was the fastest, but then they faced the Roaring Forties, relentless gale-force winds, and iceberg territory. It is a mariner's guide to the pleasures and perils of sailing the Trade Winds, the archipelagos of the Pacific, and the Cape Horn route including preparation suggestions and the sailing survival knowledge that made the Moitessier's voyage successful and joyous.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, but how times have changed!.......2007-03-21

Moitessier is a marvelous story teller, and his seamanship is unquestionably excellent. The story of their voyage is absolutely a gem, and should be required reading for those who wish to cruise, or at least love sailing. Sadly, in some ways the book is a sort of time capsule, and scenes like his turtle-hunting in the Galapagos Islands are not as joyful as perhaps they once were, as the species in that area are now considered threatened or endangered. Of course, people were only later to become more conscious of the environment and the fragilities of ecosystems to outside forces, but these days, I can see some sailors cringing at certain paragraphs. I very highly recommend this book, I really do, but be prepared for some jarring moments.

5 out of 5 stars It's a classic.......2007-01-10

This is one of those books that ough to be in every sailor library. It might seem outdated for these days, and the Moitessier's style might seem too "poetic" even surreal, but we are talking of a real pioneer of the sea

As physicians are faced with new and wonderful options for saving lives, transplanting organs, and furthering research, they also must wrestle with new and troubling choices-who should receive scarce and vital treatment, how we determine when life ends, what limits should be placed on care for the dying, and more. This book by renowned theologian Paul Ramsey, first published thirty years ago, anticipated these moral and ethical issues and addressed them with cogency and power, providing the intellectual foundations for the field of bioethics. This second edition of Ramsey's classic work includes a new foreword by Margaret Farley and essays by Albert R. Jonsen and William F. May that help to locate and interpret Ramsey historically and intellectually

                              Book Description

The main objective of the book is to give an overview of numerical methods to compute parameters of a dynamical model by a least squares fit of experimental data. The mathematical equations under consideration are explicit model functions or steady state systems in the simplest case, or responses of dynamical systems defined by ordinary differential equations, differential algebraic equations, partial differential equations, and partial differential algebraic equations (1D). Many different mathematical disciplines must be combined to find a solution, for example nonlinear programming, least squares optimization, systems of nonlinear equations, ordinary differential equations, discretization of partial differential equations, sensitivity analysis, automatic differentiation, and statistics.

                              5 out of 5 stars review.......2005-04-14

The book contains the numerical tools needed to fit the solution of a dynamical system to experimental data by varying some design parameters. These are optimization techniques, solvers for ordinary and partial differential equations, steady-state systems etc. A whole chapter is devoted to the question "what happens if somnething goes wrong" and gives recommendations how to avoid pitfalls. There is a collection of 12 realistic case studies with practical background and a collection of a large number of test problems coming with a CD and demonstration software.

As a practitioner, I enjoyed very much reading the book. I got an impression how the mathematical routines work and understood some of my own difficulties when fitting experimental data.

                              1 out of 5 stars book review.......2003-12-04

This book has the very very brief introductions to various topics and it almost feels like reading a bibliography on the topic of numerical data fitting ... could not find anything worthwhile in it .... I found more useful and comprehensive information on this topic through google search on the internet ... I regret spending all that money on this book.

5 out of 5 stars Latin students will enjoy this "Pharr Out" edition of the Aeneid.......2007-03-17

This Latin textbook provides the first half of the Aeneid in Latin, along with plenty of footnotes and appendices to guide you as you translate the great epic. Each page contains five to fifteen lines of the Aeneid, and the remaining two-thirds of each page contains the vocabulary, grammar notes, and miscellaneous footnotes. You never need to turn a page or refer to another dictionary, so the tedious aspect of translating is removed. (My fellow students love this awesome aspect and therefore call it the "Pharr Out" edition.) The appendices provide all the grammar rules you may have forgotten or have yet to learn. Beginner and Intermediate Latin students can't go wrong with this book if they need or want to tackle Virgil's Aeneid.

                              5 out of 5 stars Pharr's Aeneid.......2007-03-09

This book is a great guide when translating the Aeneid. It has all of the poetic figures, grammatical notes, and vocabulary one needs for preparation for the AP Latin test.

                              3 out of 5 stars Problematic Annotations.......2006-11-04

I have found this text to be helpful, although at times somewhat misleading. Pharr's edition of Virgil's Aeneid is renowned for its extensive annotations throughout the entirety of the text (intended to assist students as well as intermediate translators). At times these annotations are more harmful than helpful. Many are either unclear or offer too much impertinent information. For this reason, students often miss the relevant information contained within and simply accept Pharr's translations of various phrases/words without actually translating for themselves.

                              5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars or more!.......2005-05-12

I recommend this book for any Latin 3, or Ap Class! The vocabulary fold out in the back is very useful! Although some may argue Barbara Boyd's Book 10 and 12 Pallas and Turnus book is exactly the same, the vocabulary lists are scarce. Pharr also has vocabulary on the pages you are translating, that do not occur as often. He also has interesting points that refer to the latin in interpretation, and he points out examples of literary devices. This book is EXCELLENT for a latin student in any grade!

Dances with Luigi is a great novel for those who wish to trace their roots of from lineage of Southern Italian or Sicilian family heritage. The author's writing style is closer to that of a TV reporter then to the writings of an author. hIs character depiction of Luigi is strong. HIs adventures searching for his grandfather's roots form Rome to out -of-the way villages in Southern Italy take interesting twists and turns, especially when addressing concurrent themes of Mussollini and WWII. Some of the mini-stories hit the mark when family ties make sense, while other unrelated moments make the reader think that the novel could have been written with a lot less information. At any rate, the novel is intriguing for Italian-Americans to read.

I "lived" the experience with Paul Paolicelli as I read this book. Always wanting to not just visit, but to live in the land of my ancestors, to experience the culture, the people, just to experience the life.

Mr. Paolicelli has to be richer for this experience.

I recommend it to all of Italian descent and to anyone wanting to experience the culture of your family, no matter what heritage.

Mr. Paolicelli's research and care for his subjects is evident from the first page. Those wanting more specific information are given a strong push to go find it out for themselves, rather than complain that the author didn't do it for them. Paul's "dance" with Luigi is an elaborate and remarkable waltz through Italian history and family mystery. Read this book. The music will linger...

I was very much looking forward to reading a book about my fathers DePasquale side of the family in Abruzzo, Italy. However, much to my dismay, Mr. Poalicelli seemed to skim over or dismiss the rich history of the DePasquale's and the town of Gamberale where our ancestors came from. For example, although politically connected to the South in the past, the town Gamberale, in the provence of Chieti in Abruzzo is in the Central region of Italy, not the South. This town was not just inhabited by the Lombards or Longobards (a Germanic tribe) as they where also refered to, but also it is believed the town was inhabited by the Franks and French normans after the tenth century. Also, many of the surnames Mr. Paolcelli's mentions on the DePasquale side of his family are incorrectly spelled. Although I give Mr. Paolocelli credit for taking the time to want to write about his family, I wished he had contacted and interviewed many more family members on the DePasqaule side of the family to get a more accuate and historical perspectiveas to who and where the DePasquales came from both historically and geographically. If, so he would had a more insightful and meaningful book for both family members an general readers.

It amazes me that some of the reviews were critical. I wonder if any of the critics have attempted to write a book and have been published.

First, I envy Paul that he had the guts to set out on the adventure that would change his life. Don't we all wish we could do that.

I started to read this book and couldn't put it down; I read it in one day. It is a travel book, a mystery book, a history book and an Italian philosophy book all rolled into one.

Join the author on his quest to understand his Italian heritage and discover fascinating characters who help him find the true meaning of life. His relatives who came to America are wonderful too, especially Uncle Al.
It's true what they say "There's something about Italians!"

My relatives and friends are getting copies for Christmas presents.

In this Time/Life volume I found at the library, James McPherson, the Pulitzer prize winner for 'Battle Cry of Freedom' wrote the preface. He is an acknowledged historian, an expert on the Civil War. America's Civil War pitted brother against brother, family against family, and state against state in November of 1863. Before it ended unpeacefully at Appomattox, Virginia, the families were devastated by the multiple deaths on both sides.

Started on April 12, 1861, at Fort Sumpter in the Charleston Harbor, by the end of four years more than a million Americans had killed each other on the battlefields. Antietam was the bloodiest, with Gettysburg and Shiloh close behind, in the number of fatalities. Entire cities lay in ruin, as we saw in the movie, "Gone With the Wind," and a way of life vanished forever. The gentility of the South was destroyed by the Northern intruders.

All they know in the Northeast was fighting anyway, first with Britain (Revolution War) and the continuous battles with the native inhabitants, tribes of Indians, as did the Easterners when they moved West (fighting, killing, scalping by the Indians as Americans moved in to take over their lands). Taking another's property is still going on today in Knoxville, Tennessee. Here in the Smoky Mountains, we lived peaceably with the Cherokees. And then they were forced to leave their lands behind for the carpetbaggers from the North to take over, but that's anothre story and another review (someday). The four years of the Civil War (1861-1865) was America's bloodiest war on its own soil. Casualties on both sides multiplied.

On February 8, 1861, secessionist delegates in Montgomery, Alabama, adopted the Constitution of the Confederate States of America. Jefferson Davis was chosen as President and took office ten days later. At that time, he was a noted U. S. Senator from Mississippi. He declared that "all Southerners wanted to be left alone but, if attacked, they would defend themselves" and appealed, "Let the erring sisters go in peace."

Two weeks later, March 4, 1861, Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as the 16th President and said that his duty was to defend the Union (federalists). In only five weeks, the war (that little Southern rebellion which expanded) began. In March, Jefferson Davis had issued a call for one hundred thousand Southern volunteers to defend their own homes. Some towns like my own hometown were divided in loyalties and the sons fought on different sides. Some were recruited by the North who had more provisions, good uniforms, and promises. The Southerners, in comparison, dressed in ragtag gray outfits.

Lincoln used his position to issue an executive order summoning 75,000 volunteers for three months' service! About twelve years ago, when questioned by a native of Belize in South America, who said ,"Tell me about your Civil War." I flauntingly said, "Oh, it was just brother against brother," which was no big deal in the place where I was born. Most killings back then in my hometown were by family members with big tempers they did not try to control. My new-found friend from Belize told me that surely it was more than that. He set me on the road to discovery about how the South suffered at the hands of the North, and it was nothing personal when brothers or cousins were recruited to fight against each other. This was not a game and none knew what exactly they were agreeing to do or how serious this war was to become. It was a "helter-skelter rush to arms" to defend a matter of principle and the Southern way of life.

We lost, but the war isnot over even now. One thing about Southerners with the Scots-Irish heritage is that we don't ever forget a wrong. This war divided families and life was never the same. No forgiveness, oncly rancor, for what was done to our lands and our way of life. Now, they've infiltrated our territories again, not with guns yet, but those awful dialects (way of speaking) which make them feel superior, and their debauchery with liquor and drugs. Right on Gay Street! The pictures in this book are fabulous, better and in more detail than any history book I've seen so far. Maybe in the 1960s, some Southerners did not overcome, as in the 1860s, but the 21st century is different. We will not let it happen again on our own lands. "Yankee, go home" is alive and well as it was in 1863-65. The results will be reversed this time. Before the real ending of the Civil War, John Wilkes Booth who was 29 years younger than the president, took it in his befuddled mind to rectify the wrong perpetrated on his beloved South and shot in close proximity, causing a whole different outcome than would have been had Lincoln lived.

4 out of 5 stars The first volume in the Time-Life series on The Civil War.......2001-03-10

This first volume in the Time-Life series on The Civil War begins with at look at "The Two Americas" in a series of contemporary paintings of a nation about to tear itself apart. Chapter 1, "One Nation, Divisible," sets up the slavery issue, from the establishment of the Mason-Dixon line to the Compromise of 1850, ending with a gallery of the noted abolitionists of the day. Chapter 2, "The Avenging Angel," focuses on the life and legacy of John Brown. Chapter 3, "Lincoln of Illinois," explains how Lincoln came to be the nominee of the Republican Party and won the Presidential election of 1860. Chapter 4, "Storm over Sumter," details the first crisis of the Lincoln's new administration over the Federal fort in the middle of Charleston harbor. Chapter 5, "The Guns Have Spoken," relates the actual attack that started the Civil War. In many regards this first volume by William C. Davis and the Editors of Time-Life Books is the most disappointing one in the series, simply because it necessarily glosses over the events leading to Fort Sumter. Trying to deal with Lincoln in a single chapter seems quite inadequate to the task, but then it is probably safe to assume the Civil War buffs reading these books know plenty on that particular subject. However, this book does set the tone for the series, including dozens of contemporary drawings, etchings, pamphlets, maps, photographs and the like to illustrate the text. Warning: if you read these books a lot they tend to come loose from the binding.

I personally loved the book. I think it was very well written and contained many documented accounts of the war that I had not read before. I love statistics and the book contained a lot.

The book explains the battles in detail. The only way you would get a more complete accounting is to read a book devoted to a single battle.

I don't think you will make a mistake buying this book.

                                                      Book Description

Many social scientists want to explain why people do what they do. A barrier to constructing such explanations used to be a lack of information on the relationship between cognition and choice. Now, recent advances in cognitive science, economics, political science, and psychology have clarified this relationship. In Elements of Reason, scholars from across the social sciences use these advances to uncover the cognitive foundations of social decision making. They answer tough questions about how people see and process information and provide new explanations of how basic human needs, the environment, and past experiences combine to affect human choices.

                                                        Book Description

The U.S. government defines invasive species as "an alien species whose introduction does or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health." What are these species? Which ones exist in the Pacific Northwest? How did they get there, and what effects are their invasions having on our environment?

Invasive Species in the Pacific Northwest examines invasive species of fish, plants, invertebrates, mammals, and birds, such as the American bullfrog, blackberries, domestic cats and pigs, European fruit flies, Japanese eelgrass, Mediterranean mussels, rats, and terrestrial mollusks. For each of 108 species, the book includes:

                                                        • Species description and current range
                                                        • Impacts on communities and native species
                                                        • Control methods and management
                                                        • Life histories and species overview
                                                        • History of invasiveness

Other features of the book include:

                                                        • 20 suggestions to help reduce the spread of invasive species
                                                        • Habitat preferences of Pacific Northwest invasive species
                                                        • A questionnaire to evaluate ecological impact and invasive potential

Invasive species have been recognized as an environmental issue since Charles Darwin's voyage on the H.M.S. Beagle. In Invasive Species in the Pacific Northwest, editors P. D. Boersma, S. E. Reichard, and A. N. Van Buren explore the intentional and accidental introductions of invasive species. Whether these species were deliberately brought to the Northwest for agricultural, horticultural, aquacultural, or hunting and fishing purposes, or accidentally introduced as stowaways and contaminants, knowledge about them is integral to the protection of our environment.
