"When you control diabetes, it won't control you," and this book shows you how. With all the books about diabetes, why another one? The need, say the authors, is for "a brief and readable guide to important basic information needed every day by people who take insulin to control their diabetes." Diabetes 101 presents the information in an unusual way: by following the journey of a character named Mike to control his diabetes. You read the dialogues between Mike and his doctor, and Mike and his diabetes educator (who even goes to a supermarket with him to teach him how to make good nutritional choices and evaluate which foods restrict fat and sugar). They discuss insulin, monitoring, nutrition, traveling, entertaining, exercise, stress, and other topics that are of daily concern to people with diabetes. If you like your information presented like a story, you'll like this book; if you prefer a more straightforward presentation, it might not be for you. Helpful charts and lists, such as sugar-free medicines, foods for sick days, and insulin adjustments for time zone changes, round out the doctor's and diabetes educator's advice nicely. --Joan Price

Go out and live well!.......2003-07-07
I have had the privilege of being one of Dr. Dolinar's patients in Phoenix, while I lived there. I say privilege because he's definitely one physician that, unlike many others, takes the time during each visit, to talk with you and calm you down about any doubts or fears you might have. With this book, you can almost have the same opportunity. He put together a very comprehensive and solid text with the help of Betty Page Brackenridge, and this one differs from most of the other diabetes books you will run into in one main respect: it doesn't "cover the topic" in a theoretical, distant manner. It goes all the way through the basics and the more sophisticated topics dealing with insulin-dependence by means of a story, the story of Mike (a longtime diabetic who uses insuline) and his conversations and interactions with his doctor and diabetes educator. It makes it very easy for you as a diabetic to relate to the story, simply because you have been there, and "done that" before.
As for the topics covered, the book deals with Dynamic Insulin Dosing (one very important tool once you are on fast-acting insulin), and a detailed insight about the condition of diabetes borrowing from the metaphor of a fireplace in a cabin, and comparing its many elements to those of a human body: cabin=body cell, logs=blood sugar, keeping a steady flow of air=insulin, etc. Also there's extensive discussing about monitoring (things that you will want to learn about it) and hypoglycemia, and how to prevent it, identify it and treat it.
The part that I found most useful is where the book deals with "living" with diabetes: what do you do on sick days; how to manage grocery shopping and eating outside; what to do and not to do when travelling with diabetes; how to cope with/handle stress; what to expect with regards to insurance claims and much more. In short, the daily in-and-outs of a diabetic, all stuff that you will easily relate with and will have a great time reading and learning from it. As the ending of the book says, it's about "whether we have diabetes or not, we only have so much tread on our tires. And it's a matter of trying to get the most mileage possible out of the tread that we've got... Go out and live well!"
A slim, easy guide and worth it's price........1998-08-24
This new 3rd revised edition offers things such as dynamic insulin dosing, insights into stopping or slowing the effects of diabetes, tips on using the new fast acting insuling Humalog, How foods impact blood sugar, suggestions on how to minimize sick days, how to get insurance reimbursement, and much more. A slim, easy guide and worth it's price.
Wonderful book for people who are new to diabetes........1998-03-07
I work at Chronimed. Actually for Home Service Medical which is under the umbrella of Chronimed. We are a mail-order diabetic supply company and full service pharmacy. I started in November of 1997 and knew basically nothing about diabetes. This book helped me grasp what my patients are going through and helped me understand the disease and different types of diabetes. This is an excellent book for beginners who want to know about the disease in terms they will understand. This book is written perfectly for someone who doesn't know all the medical terms for the symptoms or treatments. It's a wonderful book!
Book Description
A development of the successful Lockheed ‘medium twins’ of the late 1930s, the PV Ventura/Harpoon family of patrol bombers saw widespread service with both the US Navy/Marine Corps and the TAF and Commonwealth from October 1942 onwards. The USAAF also used surplus Venturas originally ordered by the RAF, designated B-34 Lexingtons, in the bomber training and coastal patrol roles. The final variant in this family was the larger PV-2 Harpoon, which was built to a US Navy requirement from March 1944 onwards. Used primarily in the Pacific, 470 Harpoons saw frontline service on anti-shipping and submarine patrols through to VJ-Day. This book covers each of these variants in complete illustrated detail.
Customer Reviews:
Venturas in Combat!.......2007-05-03
Few attempts at converting civilian airliners to the bomber role have met with success. Case in point: the Lockheed Lodestar. Developed to met a British requirement for a long range anti-submarine patrol aircraft, the modified and re-named PV-1 Ventura saw service in all theaters of war with mixed results. An improved version - the PV-2 Harpoon - had a checkered career due to technical problems. The story of these two warbirds is related in this interesting 'Osprey Combat Aircraft' volume.
Though a success in the Pacific, Med, Caribbean and Aleutians, the Ventura did not fare well over European skies. In large part, this was due to the RAF changing the aircraft's mission from patrol aircraft to daylight bomber. Nicknamed 'the pig' by RAF crews, the Ventura was faulted for inadequate armament, poor maneuverability and slow speed. Losses were heavy and the Ventura was replaced as soon as possible by Bostons, B-25s and Mosquitoes. In all other theaters the aircraft gave splendid service, being flown by numerous USAAF, USN, RAAF, RCAF, RNZAF and SAAF units. The Harpoon saw limited service at war's end due to problems with its fuel tanks, wing spars, etc.
Author Alan Carey does a fine job of relating the Ventura's war record, touching upon ops in all theaters. The amount of detail Carey packs into the 90-odd pages of text is noteworthy as is the wealth of information Carey gleaned from many Ventura aircrew.
Carey's book is illustrated with over 90 photographs, many of them rare, and 10 pages of color profiles by crack illustrator Tom Tullis.
Osprey is to be congratulated for presenting the Ventura/Harpoon story. Though some might consider the PV-1 and -2 'second stringers,' the crews that manned the Ventura and Harpoon flew some hairy missions, contributing to the final victory. Alan Carey's book is an excellent tribute to those men and their aircraft.
Good PV-1 overview........2006-11-03
Lockheed's Ventura was one of many unsung aircraft to come out of WW II. It served in many theaters and by many countries. There have been few books published about the aircraft so this book from Osprey Publishing is a welcome addition. It is an overview and isn't the definitive history but you will learn something about the plane.

A Top Rate Scholar.......2005-06-16
Although I have not yet had a chance to read Dr. Kaplowitz's book, I am a former student of his and I can attest to his immense knowledge of U.S./Mexican relations. This book covers the recent history of Mexican Americans and how they have been affected by U.S. policies over the years, for better or worse. I give the book four stars because I know it is written by a first-rate scholar and will prove to be a valuable resource to anyone researching U.S./Mexican relations.

Walter Payton's premature passing forced a rethinking of his autobiography that completely sidesteps the self-importance that dominates sports memoirs in general. Never Die Easy isn't a traditional autobiography at all. It's an oral history disguised as autobiography that relates the saga of the most exquisite running back in NFL history through an interweaving of Payton's words and the words of those who knew him, with necessary transitions and narrative bridged by his collaborator. The result is an appealing hybrid that mirrors Payton's quiet modesty. "He had not just been a great football player," writes Yaeger, "he had been a role model in an age when role models were in short supply."
The Payton that emerges is a man of great skill, decency, passion, and charity: a man beloved. Naturally, there's lots of football in Never Die Easy--the title comes from a saying of Payton's college coach--with eyewitness testimony provided by the likes of Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary, Jim McMahon, Franco Harris, Matt Suhey, and even Jim Brown, whose career rushing record Payton leaped over. But there is also lots of family: the voices of his wife, children, brother, and sister are heard.
But mostly, there is Walter Payton. It's his own unmistakably high-pitched voice that resonates throughout; he sets down the melody and the others harmonize. Payton was certainly astute about the game and his abilities, forthcoming both in triumph and failure--his unsuccessful attempt at winning the NFL franchise in St. Louis was a terrible post-career blow--and utterly decent. How many other superstar athletes could say, convincingly, "Too many of us only take. We don't give." Payton gave to the end--a man who died for want of an organ was willing and eager to donate his own. It was the ultimate testimony of his refined, unforgettable Sweetness. Never Die Easy offers a fair, honest, appreciative taste. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
"Never die easy. Why run out of bounds and die easy? Make that linebacker pay. It carries into all facets of your life. It's okay to lose, to die, but don't die without trying, without giving it your best."
His legacy is towering. Walter Payton—the man they called Sweetness, for the way he ran—remains the most prolific running back in the history of the National Football League, the star of the Chicago Bears' only Super Bowl Championship, eleven times voted the most popular sports figure in Chicago's history. Off the field, he was a devoted father whose charitable foundation benefited tens of thousands of children each year, and who—faced with terminal liver disease—refused to use his celebrity to gain a preferential position for organ donation. Walter Payton was not just a football hero; he was America's hero.
Never Die Easy is Walter Payton's autobiography, told from the heart. Growing up poor in Mississippi, he took up football to get girls' attention, and went on to become a Black College All-American at tiny Jackson State (during which time he was also a finalist in a Soul Train dance contest). Drafted by the Bears in 1975, he predicted that he would last only five years but went on to play thirteen extraordinary seasons, a career earning him regular acknowledgment as one of the greatest players in the history of professional football. And when his playing days were over, he approached business and charity endeavors with the same determination and success he had brought to the football field, always putting first his devotion to friends and family. His ultimate battle with illness truly proved him the champion he always had been and prompted a staggering outpouring of love and support from hundreds of thousands of friends and admirers.
Written with veteran journalist and author Don Yaeger in the last weeks of Walter Payton's life,
Never Die Easy presents Walter's singular voice—warm, plainspoken, funny, self-aware—along with the voices of the friends, family, teammates, and business associates who knew him best at all stages of his life, including his wife, Connie, and their children, Brittney and Jarrett; his teammate and friend Matt Suhey; former Bears head coach Mike Ditka; and many, many others.
Walter made Don Yaeger promise that his book would be "inspirational and leave people with some kind of lesson . . . and make sure you spell all the words right."
Never Die Easy keeps all those promises.

Customer Reviews:
Great look into all aspects of Walter's life.......2007-06-28
I am a huge Bears and Walter Payton, and absolutely loved this book. It covers all the aspects of his life, from growing up in Mississippi, to college at Jackson State, on to the Bears, his many business endeavors after this retirement, and his untimely death. You get an in depth look into his life, as told not only by him, but from his friends and family. I would recommend this book not only to Bears and football fans, but anyone in general. There are many things you can learn from Walter, whether it be treating people the right way, or always giving 100%, even when things are bad.
And one last note. Be prepared before you read the last chapter of the book. It is very emotional, to say the least, but a great read.
Payton A Better Player in Life, Than He Was In Football.......2007-03-20
and he was no slouch in football, first ballot hall of famer over 16,000 yards rushing. 13 seasons, 9 All Pros and a Super Bowl Champion, yet all that is nothing compared to what kind of man Walter Payton was.
In this inspiring and uplifting book we get to meet the very private Payton and get a portrait of a man of faith, values, morals and integrity. We also get to learn from someone who is facing the biggest tackler in life ( impending death) in his own words.
I cam away awed and inspired by Walter Payton and hope that kids get ahold of this book, in a time where the above qualities are rare in sports heroes, we need more heroes and Walter definantly lives up to that title.
Wow.......2007-01-25
Wow! What a great book. I read ALOT, but I can honestly say that not very many books have touched me the way this one has. Walter was (and is) one of my heros growing up. Second to none on the football field as far as I'm concerned. And I was born and raised in the same town that Jim Brown is revered in. The man on the gridiron is only a small part of who Walter was. What he did off the field was an even greater measure of Walter as a man and I'm sure that's how he would want to be remembered.
If you're looking for an inspiring story - here's one that will make you look at life a little different. I wish the best to Connie, Brittany and Jarrett and it is so nice to know that they are continuing Walter's work through the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation.
Great Book!!.......2006-12-20
Never Die Easy is a very inspiring book that has a lot of interesting facts about the great Walter Payton's life. Even though people think that the famous people in life have had it easy and have been rich for their whole lives, this book shows that doesn't always happen. When Walter was a child growing up in a small town in Alabama, his family had absolutely nothing. They were very poor, but they were very hard working people. Walter had to work incredibly hard to get to the point in his career that he did. He never lifted weights, but yet was stronger than almost every other professional athlete. "How could you be so strong if you have never lifted?" his teammates would always ask. It showed me that everything doesn't come easy if you want to be an athlete. Even if you have some talent, it takes a lot more than just that to get to the professional level. This book showed me that Walter Payton was one of the greatest football players of all-time mainly because of his work ethnic. He would never quit and would always fight to get one more yard. A lot of people liked him because of his great leadership as well. He pretty much got younger players to turn into stars. I liked this about Walter. He was the greatest football player around and yet he was always trying to help somebody. He always put others in front of himself. He is a lot different from players today who only care about themselves and breaking records and stuff like that. There are few players who want to help others before themselves anymore. I think this book teaches you that there is more to life than getting into the record books or only doing what you can to make yourself better. It teaches you that you can be in the record books and still help other people's lives dramatically. This book had a lot of meaning to it and I think it is one of the better books I have read in my life. I recommend that if you like football or just sports in general, that you would most likely enjoy reading this great autobiography. It is a great book, but it also gets you thinking about how you could be a better person. I think that this book is trying to say that you can be very successful in life, but you can still be more successful in helping other people's lives.
Never Die Easy.......2006-11-05
Walter Payton was a heck of an athlete, but they way this book was written he seemed very bitter at the end of his career. Through the guidance of his agent and the owners of the other teams it looks like they led him down the yellow brick road only to kick him off once he had retired from football. He truly was Sweetness to everyone who knew him. I only had the privlidge of watching him play at one home game in Chicago but it was very memorable. Like he said he never went out of bounds to keep from taking a hit. All his yards were on the field, not like some of the new running backs who try to make it out of bounds to keep from taking a hit. Perhaps like Fran Tarkington said to John Elway one time "Maybe they need to be wearing skirts" to keep from being him by the defensive team! The book was easy to read and I still and will always have a lot of respect and admiration for Walter. He was a true athlete.

Product Description
This book is a gripping account of the career and achievements of one of the most intriguing figures of world exploration and British naval history -- Captain James Cook. Born in 1728, the son of a farm laborer, Cook, through sheer determination, keen intellect and consummate skills as a seaman, rose to honours and recognition in his own time and to a unique and enduring prominence in the history of navigation. The book retraces Cook?s three voyages, ending with his tragic death in Hawaii in 1779. It also assesses his unique contribution to exploration and discovery, to seafaring, science and medicine. It took extraordinary courage to sail for months on end through unchartered waters, aboard crowded ships, relying almost entirely on the skills and knowledge of the sea possessed by the captain, his officers and crew. One can almost feel the spray and taste the salt as this fast-moving narrative unfolds. Superbly illustrated with Bill Finnis's photographs, maps and evocative sketches from his own six-year voyage, as well as the charts, paintings and engravings of the period, this fascinating book offers a unique understanding of the personality and achievements of Captain James Cook, seaman and scientist.
Customer Reviews:
This man can write........2004-04-01
There are those who are quite able to transfer their research into the written word in such a way that the reader is fully able to enjoy the fruits of their work - and there are those who are not. Thankfully, Bill Finnis belongs to the former group.
"Captain James Cook - Seaman and Scientist" arrived through my letterbox just as I was departing for a week's diving on one of the many Safari Boats found in the Egyptian Red Sea. I always take a good book on such trips and this one proved to be an excellent choice.
This is a hardback book measuring approx. 11in x 8¼in, containing almost 250 pages of text with just the right amount of charts, sketches, portraits and photographs in support. The book begins with a chapter headed "Setting the Scene" and that is precisely what it does. Drawing on his own vast experience of the sea, the author explains the prevailing wind conditions in the Pacific Ocean before reminding us of the contributions made by a host of individuals - many of us will remember from our school days; Magellan, Drake, Anson, Bougainville, Dampier and Cartaret - to name but some.
So, having been reminded of what has gone before in terms of world exploration we are now treated to an exposé of Cook's early years and how he came to be apprenticed to a small shipping company in Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. Then, after some 4 years - and just as he is offered his very first command of a merchant ship, he elects instead to widen his horizons by joining the Navy.
What follows is an immensely readable account of Cook's life and, of course, his death. Along the way, we learn of the difficulties associated with determining longitude and how this led to errors in fixing the precise positions of islands being charted by various explorers. We also learn how William Bligh - later to become that famous Captain Bligh of Mutiny on the Bounty fame, accompanied Cook on his last voyage. Perhaps, after learning so much about navigation from the great man himself, it was little wonder that Bligh survived that epic voyage in a small open boat after having been evicted from his ship.
Elsewhere, we learn how Cook had conducted a detailed survey of the Coast of New Zealand during 1769-1770. I particularly liked the comment whereby, in 1943 US Forces were based in that country and decided the charts should be brought up to date. Their own survey of the New Zealand coastline revealed several apparent errors made by Cook. Some years later, with the benefit of satellite position fixing, it was found that the US Forces were in error and Cook had been right all along.
In summary, this book contains 250 pages of historical detail written in a style which makes it hard to put down. It is a fascinating account of one of history's most fascinating men and the reader will not be disappointed by either the content or the way in which it is presented.

Book Description
Claiming the Mantle details the formal and informal process of selecting presidential nominees. Author R. Lawrence Butler argues that changes to the presidential nomination process designed for greater democratization have come full circle. Once again, nominees are chosen by party bosses, in most instances before the first votes are cast in Iowa and New Hampshire. The candidate who takes the lead before the primaries will win the nomination because the compression and front-loading of the primary process, combined with the campaign finance system, make it impossible for anyone else to capitalize on early momentum. The only real difference between the present system and the days of party bosses in smoke-filled rooms is who does the choosing. In addition to party leaders, the fundraisers, political consultants, interest group leaders, and party activists in key states choose a party's nominee for President.
Although Howard Dean outraised his opponents in 2003, he did not develop the national organization or the institutional support necessary to secure the nomination, leaving himself vulnerable to Kerry's 2004 surge. Drawing on numerous examples from the 2004 Democratic campaign, and detailed analyses of every contested Republican and Democratic presidential nomination race since 1976, Claiming the Mantle interprets the evolution of the presidential nomination process and explores the unwritten rules of the pre-primary campaign that allow one candidate to "claim the mantle" while the others fall short. AUTHOR BIO: R. Lawrence Butler is assistant professor of political science at Rowan University. He has also served as an economic analyst for the federal government.
Customer Reviews:
Insightful look into how primaries REALLY work.......2004-11-22
Why are people so often disenchanted with presidential nominees? Probably because they don't really pick. According to Butler, who becomes a nominee comes down to four things: How much money can they raise? Can they manage the media? Can they win the respect of their party? And is their campaign well organized? If a candidate can't do these things, they are bound to lose the nomination. Butler also explains the three way primaries work out: a "Seven Dwarfs" scenario (no obvious nominee, a "Snow White" eventually emerges because of the four aforementioned reasons), a "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" scenario (an obvious nominee against others who don't have a chance of winning), and a "Clash of the Titans" scenario (the incumbent president or vice-president vs. an incredibly strong candidate who looks like he has a fighting chance - but the incumbent always wins anyway).
All of this is explained clearly, with lots of details that make it both interesting and easy to follow. At times Butler takes his metaphors a little too far, but when it comes to genuine political science, this book is top-notch.

Book Description
Oceans 2020 presents a comprehensive assessment of the most important science and societal issues that are likely to arise in marine science and ocean management in the next twenty years. Sponsored by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR), and the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE), the book brings together the world's leading ocean scientists and researchers to analyze the state of marine science and technology, identify key scientific issues for sustainable development, and evaluate the capability of scientists, governments, and private-sector stakeholders to respond to those issues. Topics include:
- basic ocean sciences
- pressures on the coastal zone
- climate change and the ocean
- fisheries and fishery science in their search for sustainability
- offshore industries including oil drilling, carbon sequestration, and manganese nodule mining
- marine information for shipping and defense
Also included are chapters on cross-cutting issues including operational oceanography, ocean instrumentation and technology, developing frameworks for cooperation, and capacity building in developing nations. In addition, the book offers an introductory overview and a "Vision to 2020" that outlines a path to rational ocean governance. In each chapter, contributors give a brief but comprehensive overview of the subject and then consider what has been achieved in recent years, define the problems, outline solutions, and set forth recommendations on the needs for and directions of ocean science in support of sustainable development for the next twenty years.
Oceans 2020 suggests what can be done about major marine environmental issues through the better development and application of marine science and technology, focusing on the issues that are most closely related to human and sustainable development. It will help guide countries in developing their marine science and technology strategies and priorities and is an essential source of information for policymakers, government officials, resource managers, scientists, the media, and all those concerned with the current and future health of the oceans.
