Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Informative and enjoyable read.......2007-10-05

The book lays out many key features of the museum and how the artifacts were acquired. It has some black & white photos showing key facets of the museum's history as described in the book. The narrative is written in a novel-like way adding to the reading enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars A "must read" for history buffs .......2007-07-22

The book is filled with all the unheard stories of the founding, and running of the museum. Also tales about the explorers, collectors, thieves and hunters that made this museum what is today. It holds all their dirty little secrets, their untold exploits, their skeletons in the closets. It is a completely entertaining and enlightening book.

5 out of 5 stars A serendipitous trip.......2006-11-05

This is a classic. Anyone who has ever visited the AMNH or plans to will want to read this book. It's a gem.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing, hilarious (sometimes) human nature book.......2003-09-30

You wouldn't think of museums as providing the stuff for comedians, but I can see not enough people know about what actually goes on in these collosal monuments to human curiosity!
I came to this book by way of mystery writers (Preston and Child--Relic and Fairchild---The Bone Vault). So thanks guys for recommending this nonfiction read! Almost as quickly read as my mysteries.

The need for so many people to collect items, animals and even humans (would someone please stomp on Admiral Peary's grave for a while)! Geez. You wouldn't think people would be so obtuse as to not realize that living, breathing human beings do not belong in museums as specimens of a tribe or culture we do not know. But obviously the wealthy who often did the collecting, or those 'explorers' who put fame and glory above compassion had a problem with understanding basic human rights. And yes, if tribes ask for their ancestors back, the bones should be returned and buried. How would we all feel if someone went and dug up our grandparents and put their skeletons on display without concern for our need to respect them? You don't see museum guys going to dig up white American or English cemetary plots, do you?

Okay, off the soapbox. A fun read, well-written, well-researched. Preston went on to write several books using the museums as a somewhat creepy place, and frankly after reading this and other books, I don't think I'd want to be locked in the American Museum of Natural History. Pretty sure I'd freak out...too much past with too many ghosts attached to it. Besides, this place sounds like a mausoleum. Having just returned from visiting the Mutter Medical Museum in Philly with its assortment of bones, oddly shaped fetuses and a variety of other things like hands floating in some type of suspension fluid showing small pox at its worse...yikes, I don't know how much of this stuff I could take, and I took medical classes in the Morgue!

The history of the museum is fascinating...the fact that we are able to see so little of this makes me yearn to do exploring down in the 'tombs' and hallways in the presence of company and full daylight, thank you.

More than a book about a museum, Dinosaurs in the Attic is a survey of the last two centuries' at times predatory and rapacious drive to collect. I read this book years ago, and am still recommending it to people as one of the most interesting and enjoyable books I've ever read. The story telling is marvelous and the insights about the museum fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Great Travel Book To Keep You Out of TROUBLE!!!.......2004-03-06

Five stars to Roger Axtell and John Healy. I highly recommend this book if you ever travel to Asia, Europe, Canada, Middle East, or Latin America.

I read this book from the front cover to the back cover in one evening. The author has also written "Traveling Cautions for Dictator Country", in addition to "Fun Fun Fun In Bangkok", also great books.

He provides great checklists that will help you keep out of trouble when authorities demand bribes or magazines that are illegal in their countries. One hint, also carry five recent copies of Pent house.

Of particular note is his advise on what to do if you lose your passport, credit cards, or phone card. He suggests locations where you can get exact duplicates in 'other names' so that you can have a very expensive vacation on someone else's account.

Details are given for Senior Citizens for saving space in luggage for packing Depends by using space saving bags that are sold in major warehouse type stores (Costco, Sam's Club).

I really enjoyed the section on how to insult different cultures. Most useful for getting off on the right foot.

Photos of different toilets around the world are chronicled including the sit and squat over a hole method in much of Asia. Some of the pictures were disgusting but humorous at the same time. Emile who is a clean freak would go nuts and not even enter some of these restrooms. Each countries rest rooms are rated.

Instructions for bypassing local telephone controls are included that will save on your travel and communicate dollars to make inexpensive (as in free) call around the world.

      Hats off to this author!

                    Book Description

Two authors from The Age of Reason and Enlightenment envisioned their own philosophical and intellectual utopias. Campanella was a student of logic and physics while Bacon focused on politics and philosophy. Despite the authors' differences in setting and treatment, each of these 17th-century classics reflect the idealism of an age.

We sailed from Peru, (where we had continued for the space of one whole year) for China and Japan, by the South Sea; taking with us victuals for twelve months; and had good winds from the east, though soft and weak, for five months space, and more. But the wind came about, and settled in the west for many days, so as we could make little or no way, and were sometime in purpose to turn back.

It's not what I thought it would be. It seemed to be advertised as an esoteric Rosicrucian document, but it's really just Bacon's portrait of an ideal society. It's true that society has Rosicrucian ideals, but it is mostly a politcal book.

This is Francis Bacon's model for America. Many believe it is the vision of the ancient spiritual adepts. Fascinating reading and most provoking.

4 out of 5 stars Two visions of The Good Life.......2005-03-29

This is a very short text: 85pp for the two pieces, plus an intro. Each piece gives a brief description of one thinker's ideal world, a Utopia of a sort. This book is strengthened by presenting two such different views, casting them into sharp contrast.

The first, by Bacon, makes much of pomp, ceremony, and fine accoutrements. He starts by describing the wonderful pageant put out for any man whose living descendants exceed thirty in number. He is paraded among and served by his issue, and granted gifts by the benevolent ruler. At this point - only at this point - is a woman of the realm mentioned. His wife, should she have survived such a feat of childbearing, is to be presented as well, in a carriage, tightly enclosed. A featureless box, the best to which a woman might aspire. (Bacon goes out of his way to disparage More's Utopia, in an amusing aside.)

The remainder of the story details the alchemical feats and workshops of the land. They interested Bacon much the way a candy store might interest a child, with no thought as to how they might be provisioned or staffed. Although the many labs are of interest to today's technologist, the country's means of feeding itself and its voracious researchers remains unsaid.

Campanella's "City of the Sun" is a Utopia of very different character. Above all, it focusses its energies on war more than any other city since Sparta. He demands training in arms for men and women both from the earliest age on, though women would enter combat only in final resort. Even the infirm are put to service however they may serve: the lame can watch and guard, the blind can work in some crafts, and so on. Women are expected to participate in industry, too, except in the woodworkers' and armorers' trades. This city is surprisingly free in religion - Jews are tolerated, if not too jewish, as well as Brahmins and others who acknowledge a soul. Hey, in those days, it was radical.

Both authors express ideas that repulse a modern mind. Even Campanella's enlightened treatment of women and religious minorities sounds brutal, until considered in the context of his time. Bacon's blinkered self-involvement would barely be worth a chuckle, until one considers his influence on history.

It's not formal, but it's a way to view history: what is it that each age most wanted itself to be? What views existed, and what views have survived? And how did the writers of each age differ from the man in the street, or more likely the man behind the plow?

4 out of 5 stars Light, happy-go-lucky biography of an American icon.......2007-07-10

Dr. Seuss is an American icon by anyone's standards. He taught millions of children how to read and enchanted young and old alike with his clever, unsentimental stories and rhymes, as well as his fanciful, detailed drawings.

While this biography doesn't get to the core of the man, it is nevertheless entertaining and good at portraying Dr. Seuss' perpetual, impish, childlike vision of the world. We see that he was a prankster and ever-young at heart, even into his 80s. At the same time, we also see a man who was passionate about his work and perfectionistic in his sense of color, meter and story development. And he didn't shy away from heady topics such as the environment, nuclear war and aging. Indeed, because of his skill and keen, honest, funny insights into the world, both children and adults reveled in his surreal, magical worlds. With books like The Lorax and The Butter Battle Book, we see a subversive, brilliant man who was thirty years ahead of his time, simultaneously writing about important issues, while entertaining everyone and also teaching children how to respect their world and the people around them.

Dr. Seuss seemingly had infinite energy for writing, drawing, painting, collaborating, imagining and building a canon of classic literature. It started early, from his days at Dartmouth, to his early attempts to break into the publishing market during the 1920s. His biographers, the Morgans, do well to emphasize his boundless spirit and curiosity---he managed to travel to exotic corners of the world, write over fifty books, and still never missed a parade or retrospective in his honor.

This biography is not a "tell-all" and doesn't probe into the depths of the man or his wonderful, mysterious, inexplicable creative process. It's a light, charming biography of a man that all of us seem to know and love, despite having never met him. Of course, after reading this book, you'll wish that you HAD known him.

                    2 out of 5 stars Awful.......2006-06-23

A silly, shallow and uniformed bio that falls far short of lending any insight nor new information on this brilliant author/illustrator. Written by a local reporter for the San Diego Union, this is one of those "gee, and I knew him!" efforts that does not deserve to be seriously considered.
                    Pass on it.

4 out of 5 stars The man behind the cat.......2006-04-10

Dr. Seuss has become such a fixture in our world that its hard to fully appreciate the impact he had on children's literature and our culture. This book explores both the origins of his whimsical books and the impact he had on the publishing industry. As portrayed here, Dr. Seuss is possessed of a slightly skewed view of life, but is devoted to promoting the causes he believed in, including children's literacy. As a man who truly believed that reading should be fun, he wrote books that he felt were fun to read, and knew that others would enjoy them too. Its a shame that his fear of public speaking kept the world from knowing him better during his lifetime, but he lives on in his impressive body of wacky and delightful books and art. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get a glimpse of the man behind the cat.

In a world of political truth, this book provides a useful look at "the rest of the story." For its veracity, every "big picture" depends upon a thorough understanding of each of its composite parts. Warfare is one of the most complex of topics. Its success depends upon everything from moral certainty to infrastructure protection. Spirit, Blood, and Treasure is a compilation of the opinions of experts from each of the major categories of military knowledge. These are experts with no particular political agenda. As such, their shared viewpoints provide a stepping stone toward ultimate truth - every American's dream.

The U.S. military/industrial complex scored a resounding victory during the initial invasion of Iraq. It demonstrated an unprecedented ability to combine electronic surveillance, firepower, and psychological warfare. But, that was then and, as Major Vandergriff implies (and President Lincoln pointed out), the U.S. government is still one "of the people, for the people, by the people." We are all ultimately responsible for everything that our government does or does not do. The author of this fine book has shared with his fellow Americans what they might have trouble discovering any other way. He is a true patriot at a time where freedom of speech has become increasingly more important.

                      5 out of 5 stars Author Excerpt.......2001-07-12

Although the Cold War has been over for 10 years, the basic doctrines, organization, and even weapons of America's military establishment remain unchanged from those that stood ready to confront the Soviet Union on the plains of Europe. We still maintain the large percentage of middle and senior ranking officers that would have been needed to accept and train the draftees filling out our armor and infantry divisions. Our manuals still envision conventional conflict against a large foe with weapons and tactics similar to our own. And even our new weapons were conceived to defeat their hypothetical counterparts that might have rolled out of Soviet factories. To foot the bill, we are now spending as much (in inflation adjusted dollars) as we did during most years of the Cold War, and roughly three times as much as the combined total of all of the conceivable "threats."

Such waste would be regrettable in view of our other domestic priorities, but it is also locking us into outmoded patterns of thought, perhaps our own Maginot Line syndrome. Unfortunately the nature of war around the world is changing. Aside from the occasional Saddam, no one wages war by lining up his forces like he was preparing for a second Battle of the Bulge. Instead, we face enemies that blend into the jungles or teeming urban sprawl, that present few targets for our wonder weapons, and that prosecute a dirty and vicious form of war that one might describe as "military terrorism." These tactics have been remarkably successful, driving us from Vietnam, Beirut, and Somalia. We can certainly expect that those who wish us harm are learning from these experiences and so will become even better at applying them, rendering our Cold War weapons and doctrines even less effective in the future.

While not the first to examine why America's military is so resistant to change, this book presents the first coherent explanation in terms of the evolving generations of war and the social dynamics of large, stable systems. It insists that change must start with our people and our systems for selecting, retaining, and promoting them, then with our doctrines, and then finally with our weapons and hardware programs. Without fundamental change of this magnitude, we will certainly confront more and more enemies employing the agile but brutal "fourth generation" strategies that have rendered our conventional might impotent or irrelevant whenever the two have clashed around the world. How to Change What should the American people expect from Congress and the military as the United States begins to adapt to this changing face of warfare? Retired air force colonel John Boyd, a leading military theorist, stated that effective military systems prioritize the components of which they are composed: people, ideas, and hardware. In the United States, the people aspect is most important. Boyd responded to the army's emphasis on synchronization-the methodical timing of several events in time and space-with the comment, "you can only synchronize watches not people." He also emphasized that "people fight wars, not machines, and they use their minds." In sum, military systems that give people top priority adapt to the changing nature of warfare more quickly than those that emphasize machines. Boyd defined this in testimony before Congress in April 1991: "There are three basic elements [to win wars] and in order of importance they are: People, because wars are fought by people not weapons. Strategy and tactics [ideas] because wars fought without innovational ideas become . . . blood baths winnable or not. Hardware, because weapons that don't work or can't be [produced] in quantity will bring down even the best people and best ideas." Boyd went on to describe how each aspect is interrelated: our military needs to be trained in innovative tactics and strategies that will lead to quick decisive victory at minimum cost to American lives . . . This requires, first, an understanding of conflict. Conflict can be viewed as repeated cycles of observing-orienting-deciding-acting by both sides (and at all levels). The adversary that can move through these cycles faster gains an inestimable advantage by disrupting his enemy's ability to respond effectively . . . These create continuous and unpredictable change. Therefore our tactics and strategy need to be based on the idea of adapting to and shaping this change faster than the enemy30

An effective military system is able to combine the concepts that Boyd describes into its military culture. If this is true, then why has the U.S. defense establishment failed to reform itself? Americans love to boast about their innovation, their ability to adapt and overcome adversity. If the current establishment is so out of date, corrupt, and slow to adapt to the twenty-first century, why does no one do anything about it except a few "reformers"? This book will address changes needed in the defense establishment. We define the "establishment" as consisting of more than its actual fighting component. A modern military machine, especially one as large as that of the United States, is composed of several interrelated institutions. To field a rifleman on the battlefield requires these institutions to work in harmony to ensure that he is well trained and led, is employing the right doctrine, and is equipped for whatever mission that confronts him. In terms Boyd would have understood, this book examines the complex process for change by dividing the essays into three parts: people, ideas, and hardware. Like an effective combined-arms team, the authors of the following essays represent all the services, as well as Department of the Defense, its acquisition community, and Congress. Some of the authors are service members-both active and retired-while others are government civilians. Their motivation is simple: They are patriots who believe America will lose its next war unless their ideas are adopted by a national security establishment badly in need of change.

                      5 out of 5 stars Revelation!.......2001-06-17

The fall of Rome is upon us! In the 5th Century the great Roman legion was in decline. The infusion of poorly trained and unloyal levies, unadaptive tactical doctrine and an officer corps corrupted by its own acquisition system, left it open to the rapidly evolving tactics of the opponents it faced, because it focused internally. And it seems so today, with the U.S. Military!

The Centurian Vandergriff and his legion of truth tellers have given the public and our electors an opportunity to right what is going wrong! I not only read each essay once, but reread them due to their academic depth, their interrelation with the other essays, and their hard-hitting recommendations to heal what is diseased. I find it positively, yet frightening, ironic that an Army major seems to know how to "get it right" with a total analysis of those institutions that comprise our military; but the military itself, manned by an officer corps concerned with politics and promotions, and adviced by the "brain trusts" in our nation's capital-only concerned with appeasing a few for their next contract-focus only on technology, and a doctrine of attrition under different, yet Hollywood sounding, names. I bet he is a popular guy among the "leaders" of our military! Of course, this makes it more appealing!

As I read the endnotes on several of the essays, I look forward to your next book of truth *The Pathway to Victory: Achieving Military Excellence for America* Major Vandergriff!! Are you thinking of running for office after they force you to retire?

5 out of 5 stars To solution(s) to our Problems.......2001-06-13

Bravo Major Vandergriff!! Normally, anthologies are boring and a cheap way to get published. You have definitely orchestrated an array of credible experts, and molded their varied and complex essays into a flowing book. I loved your introduction and how you and Franklin Spinney ended the book! A most exciting, yet scary enlightenment. I hope President Bush (whom I voted for), and Secretary Rumsfeld, hail to David Hackworth's recommendation, and not only read your book, but talk to you. I know from personal experience, they will not, but as alleged reformers, they can at least acknowledge your follower's ideas. I am definitelty recommended your pages of truth to many others. Good Luck!!

                      5 out of 5 stars Why Aren't They Listening?.......2001-06-10

I found Spirit Blood and Treasure an island of truth in a sea of spin from our establishment called the Pentagon. I recommend this book for anyone who claims to be a concerned citizen of our country to read it, and write a letter to your representatitive for a better, intelligent review of our defense. I am a patriotic citizen who wants a strong defense, but I think the old way of doing business-i.e., throw money at the problem-will not work against our next opponent. Vandergriff is definitely a brave person, being a serving officer, but didn't he take an oath when we was commissioned as an officer to the Constitution to uphold it? He is acting as a professional should-sees a problem and is fixing it. But, I wager, despite the readily appearance of a great deal of detailed academic research in this book, Vandergriff and his fellow authors of the essays, will not win an audience with Rumsfeld or his cronies.

Evaluating environmental policy while considering the lasting implications of today's environmental controversies for the future is no easy task, especially given the dramatic changes of the past couple years. Assessing new strategies prompted by the George W. Bush administration, Norman J. Vig and Michael E. Kraft head a team of distinguished contributors to help students make sense of the underlying trends, institutional shortcomings, and policy dilemmas that shape the contentious world of environmental politics. Accessibly written, each chapter attempts to explain the most important developments in environmental politics in recent decades-at the local, state, national, and international levels-and at the same time points to new policy directions for the future. Environmental Policy is essential reading for students of public policy and for anyone who is interested in the current debate over reforming environmental policies and promoting sustainable development in the future.

This is the new edition of "Environmental Policy in the 1990s," a series now considered to be the most important in the field. This edition has some of the classic essays from earlier editions, but is expanded to cover the Clinton administration and address issues of a global nature.

I have been using this series as a basic text in graduate courses in environmental policy for years. I consider it to be a primary source of not only teaching, but research and basic information. All of the essays are clearly written and as unbiased as possible. I give this my highest recommendation.

(Addendum in 2007. This series is up to six editions with a seventh due out this summer. All are essential for the serious student of environmental policy and history).

                            Book Description

The dramatic story of the salvation of the Marin headlands unfolds in Marty Griffin's fascinating memoir, "Saving the Marin-Sonoma Coast." With sharp insight and humor, Dr. Griffin documents the creation of the magnificent Audubon Canyon Ranch wildlife preserves on Bolinas Lagoon and Tomales Bay and their crucial role in rescuing the Pt. Reyes National Seashore, preserving California's unspoiled North Coast, and transforming the political landscape of Marin County.

4 out of 5 stars Beauty can be saved.......1999-12-07

You may not think you'll be interested in this rather formidable looking book with its straightforward title, but it is an inspiring story. What one impassioned but modest man (he gives others most of the credit) did to save from Californication one piece after another of one of the lovliest coastlines in the U.S.is a story to savor. Read it and cheer.
