How do women become so wise and resilient? And why do we sweat the small stuff so much? Is there some balance, some moment when you realize that most of it is all small stuff?

Kristine Carlson is married to Richard Carlson and together they show great insight into the everyday life. Their books can seriously start to change your life if you use the principles they present in these easy-to-read compact books. I especially like their "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff in Love" book and I think it helped me improve my own relationship considerably by making me realize that one of the most important needs humans have is to be listened to. I had never really thought about what the other person needed in conversation, always so busy jabbering on. Wow, that was quite a revelation to me and it changed my entire view of conversation.

Expect real revelations from these books. They are more than enlightening. Sometimes a simple awareness of an issue can trigger an entire thinking pattern that will help you make changes. When reading this book a highlighter is essential!

Kristine discusses why you should set aside time every morning to reflect. See, that is a good excuse to spend a little time in the morning chatting online? Right? Ok, well I think that she actually meant spending time alone thinking about your day.

As you move into your day, you try to get organized and at times the entire day feels like it is falling apart. Have you noticed that if you pick up the house in the morning, the entire day is more enjoyable? Kristine gives herself an hour each morning to clear the path of her day. She spends time each morning organizing her life. I loved her thought about laundry. A gentleman she met makes folding clothes a Zen meditation. Ok, so I am not burning candles while I fold towels, but I try not to be as stressed about it all.

Ground Your Energy in Nature - Take a walk in the evening.

Plan an Inspiration Flow Day - Just go with the flow...oh, what fun this type of day is. It is very freeing and you do just what occurs to you. I write the most reviews on these types of days. They might include reading a great book, watching a movie, sitting outside with the cats, making dinner, writing in a journal, exercising. On other days, you might feel like just leaving the house for most of the day and forgetting about that load of laundry, those dishes, etc. Just escaping can be most freeing.

Walk Through Open Doors - A positive attitude shows you more open doors.

Let Go of "Perfect" Plans - have a sense of humor when things don't work instead of crying your eyes out. Dissapointment is so hard to take when you have very high expectations.

Climb Your Mountain One Step at a Time - set goals, but take it one step at a time.

This cheerful book aims to make us stop and smell--if not roses--whatever is sitting in front of our noses. It is just like the other series of "Don't Sweat" books but with a women-minded twist. It offers meditations designed to make us appreciate our lives, keep our emotions in perspective, and cherish other people. I also highly recommend "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom" by Taro Gold. If we all followed the guidance in these books, we would be happier, more harmonious women.

Well-meaning, I suppose, but very lightweight advice. Take a hot bath. Breathe deeply. Drink decaffinated tea. Please. Nothing new here. A nice little book for someone who's pretty oblivious to the world around them. Sorry to be jaded; but nothing here that would seriously stop the sweating! Maybe it would stop mild perspiration, but not real sweat!

An officer with the Scottish 52nd Lowland Division, Peter White shares the real discomfort caused by lack of sleep, hours without meals, inadequate clothing while at the sharp end of an infantry unit. Through the winter of 1944, White's unit fought and suffered horrendous casualties in NW Europe. White details the self-inflicted wounds, the "bomb-happy" soldiers, the friendly fire victims, the mundane life-taking accidents, and the AWOL types, all the way to the other end of the spectrum detailing the gallantry and courage of many other men of his unit in combat. Peter White examines the role chance had in own survival when he describes how two platoons were detailed to work up each side of a farm track. His platoon made it okay but the other platoon was cut down by concealed MG-42s. With the Jocks is one of the best personal combat memoirs of WWII.

A Superb World War II Memoir.......2006-01-22

This is the best kind of memoir: filled with details about the actions, thoughts, emotions and terrifying events this fine officer went through with the greatest courage. I could not put it down. Those who want to get a glimpse of the real horror of war and the truly awe-inspiring courage of these men must get this book. It ranks among my top ten best memoirs of that war. These men were truly amazing.

Great book from the "Jock" point of view.......2005-05-19

Peter White was an officer with the 52nd Lowland Division in WWII. The Division was sent to NW Europe after the Market Garden fiasco (A battle the Division was planned to be in) and fought all the way to VE-Day. White is an interesting person himself and his disdain of swearing and his gentlemanly manners are evident to the reader. White is also an artist who contributes some of the illustrations in the book, he also illustrates to the reader the life of the British Soldier at war. You see the life and death struggle with the enemy and the boredom of the soldiers' life in great detail. White also details the attitude of his men towards the German civilians in the last days of the war. The book is quite long, and I have top admit losing the author in some places (cultural differences perhaps) but overall I enjoyed the book.

This text on the increasingly popular topic of chaos is accessible to a varied undergraduate audience. Gulick is co-author of a successful calculus book and is an excellent expositor. His recent interest in teaching chaotic dynamical systems to undergraduates produced a set of class notes that developed into this text.

Not too bad.......2001-05-02

In the field of chaotic dynamics, does there exist _the_ standard textbook for undergrads? I think not. Still, in most colleges, _chaos_ is a subtopic you briefly go through (most of the time just `skipped' through) while studying differential equations, mathematical physics or classical physics. To be competely honest, my impression is that those ``subtopics'' usually don't make a good intro to chaotic dynamics, either. I have read some textbooks targeted at undergraduates and Gulick's was not too bad to skim through what we have in chaotic dynamics. However, Gulick pays too much attention on the basics (analysis and differential equations) and this may seem such a waste of space given the limited number of pages (some two hundreds). Naturally, his explanations are not detailed and gives the impression that things are done rather hastily. But, I must say, this book is superier to some other books that spends time neither on the basics nor the analytic aspects of chaotic dynamics.

I had to use this book for a class I took at Bryn Mawr college called "Chaotic Dynamical Systems". There are some mistakes in the book, although I don't remember specifically what they were, and my instructor had to point some of them out. The book, to my knowledge, only covers discrete dynamical systems, and contrary to what the above reviewer says, there is some real analysis involved: i.e. some proofs and definitions involving epsilon and delta. That's about all I can say because I don't remember the book very well, and we only got through about half of it. I recall that most people in my class didn't like the book very much either.

Fantastic Resource for Undergraduates.......1998-02-22

Denny Gulick opens here a direct access to the mathematical technics for understanding chaotic phenomena. Any undergraduate with some pre or calculus knowledge, little algebra and very few differential equations (rich introductions to these topics are included in every chapter)can access the basics of this growing "Chaos Theory", that is beeing applied to dynamics in all fields. Professor Gulick makes an outstanding aproach with this book. He makes accesible this field to beginners, self-students or newcomers to mathematics, covering so a huge gap in the literature. It is full of examples, detailed exercises and explained in a very comprehensible and student-friendly way, without losing rigour and technic. It has a companion booklet to order separately that includes "all the solutions to the exercises, done step by step and a true Basic software for Pcs or Macs.

A realistic account.......2006-01-23

Reading this book, it's important to remember that it wasn't written by someone with a formal, "liberal arts" education. That said, you need to use your own judgement to decide what's perhaps "biased", and what's not. Remember though, that whatever bias exists, exists for a reason, and should be taken in the context of what was going on at the time, as well as within the author's background. This isn't to say she's wrong, but in fact is correct on most issues, you just need to ensure that YOU the reader, are well versed on the subject (or are willing to become so) before reading this book. From my own experiences in the country, Alvarado seems dead on. Remember too, that the author has put herself in real peril to bring you this account, so plan on counting your blessings as you read.

I read this book in order to learn something about the people
of Honduras and how they live. I found it to be a good source
for learning about the lives of "campasinos"...peasants.. and
their struggle to live and raise their families in general.
It was not such a good source for learning about this country's
small middle class and since the author's struggle is with the rich,
all references to them were in a negative light... so it was not necessarily an unbiased resource for learning about them.

The Wehrmacht's Army Group Center was routed, a total of 17 Wehrmacht divisions were utterly destroyed, and over 50 other German divisions were shattered. It was the single most calamitous defeat of the German armed forces in World War II. In many respects Operation Bagration was the 1941 Operation Barbarossa invasion in reverse, fought over many of the same battlefields. The Wehrmacht's Army Group Center was routed, a total of 17 Wehrmacht divisions were utterly destroyed, and over 50 other German divisions were shattered. It was the single most calamitous defeat of the German armed forces in World War II, costing the Wehrmacht more men and material than the cataclysm at Stalingrad 16 months earlier. It was all the more catastrophic because it was timed to coincide with D-Day and the Allied liberation of France. This important Russian campaign is little appreciated in the West, overshadowed by the Normandy campaign.

Most historians of the Eastern Front detail the big battles that were the key turning points such as Stalingrad, Leningrad, and Kursk. Howver, most overlook Operation Bagration which occured at the same time as the Normandy landings. Bagration freed Belarus from the Nazi occupation and cost the Germans over 300,000 soldiers. This battle forced the Germans to retreat to the pre war borders of Poland and handed the Russians the opportunities to force the Germans onto the defensive. This book gives the reader an overview of the battle and its later effects. Since it is a summary short read, there is no in depth discussion but the overview is sufficient.
This is a good summary read for the military historian. The book is chock full of photos and technical details of the battle.

GOOD OVERVIEW.......2002-05-09

Like most books in the Ospery series, Bagration 1944 : The Destruction of Army Group Centre, creates a good overview of the destruction of Army Group Centre. The weakness of the book is it trys to cover too much and becomes a long narrative of attacks and movements with little perspective. It would help if there were more maps but given the nature of Ospery that is more then can be expected.

The strength of the book is the discussion of how Hitler's iron fisted direction of the German defense most likely eliminated any small chance of stemming the Soviet advance.

All in all, it is a worthwile read if one wants to get an overview of the campaign. However, because it is so dense it is difficult to process all of the facts.

Soviet defeat of Nazi Germany- the beginning of the end........2001-10-23

A good study of the defeat of Germany in Belarus, which ultimately led to the end of the Third Reich. The book has a nice collection of photos and diagrams of the campaign. It includes studies of the main military leaders, both Soviet and German. What I found of particular interest was the coverage of Lend-Lease equipment used by the Red Army. This had been downplayed by both the Soviets and the West during the Cold War, but the book clearly shows that Sherman tanks, Studebaker trucks and other US equipment were liberally used by the Red Army and did play a part in the ultimate victory. Operation Bagration has often been overshadowed by the other significant German defeat of 1944, the failure to halt the Anglo-American landing in Normandy. A significant event such as Operation Bagration, obviously needs to be covered and to given its due importance.

Quite good for modelers.......2000-05-31

In the usual Campaign series format, highlights from the book are the topological maps in 3D and the uniforms and equipment sketches. (These drawings actually come from other Osprey series, such as WARRIORS, MEN AT ARMS, or ELITE.)

The historical treatment is not too deep (the book isn't that long!) but gives a nice overview of the whole campaign against the german army group.

You could also get KURSK 1943 if you want to read about yet another german defeat in the East.

Fighting over many of the same battlefields, it reveals how scores of German troops were urged on by their Fuhrer to defend their positions to the death in a desperate attempt to prevent the mighty Red Army forces from recapturing Byelorussia, the last bastion of defense for the Germans before Poland. The Bagration offensive was a bloodthirsty battle of attrition which resulted in a catastrophe of unbelievable proportions. Throughout the book the author provides an absorbing analysis of this traumatic battle and shows how German soldiers continued to fight to the bitter end amidst the constant hammer blows of ground and aerial bombardment, and endless armored and infantry attacks. Although many German units continued to wage a grim and bitter defense the Red Army swamped the already overstretched front lines. The Soviets punched massive holes in the disintegrating defenses almost everywhere, letting through a seemingly-unstoppable flood, pushing apart and encircling many precious German Panzer and infantry divisions. In the end Bagration cost the Wehrmacht more men and material than the catastrophe at Stalingrad sixteen months earlier. The shattering defeat of Army Group Centre resulted in the loss of over 300,000 men and witnessed Soviet forces pushing exhausted German remnants out of Russia and through Poland to the gates of Warsaw.

I witnessed much of the transformation described in this book and it is remarkably accurate. This should serve as a guide for community organizers seeking to work in neglected neighborhoods. Too bad Peter Medoff is no longer with us.

A little too much detail. However, this is an inspiring success story about a community in very bad shape, that turned itself around totally, working "from the inside out". Well known in the field of community development, in my area.
