Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not Just For California!.......2004-02-11

This is a really neat and very reasonably priced book on dragonflies and damselflies. I liked it from the first time I saw it. The color illustrations are great and with the short descriptions are very helpful for identifying the families, genera and species. The size of the book is also just right for transport into the field.

I checked the book against our list for New Mexico and found that close to 1/2 of our dragonflies and damselflies are described! The handbook should thus be useful in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Oregon and northwestern Mexico, as well as the target- California.

For the price and quality the dragonfly and damselfly enthusiast in the Southwest could not find a better field reference!

5 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for every naturalist and budding entomologist.......2003-09-12

Anyone in California (or visiting California) who has ever shown any interest in dragonflies and/or damselflies should own this wonderful new book! It not only contains traditional keys to the insect families of both adults and larvae, but also a well-written narrative about the behavior and life cycle of these ancient and most interesting creatures. If you are one who prefers to "picture key" your way to an identification, that is possible, as well, thanks to Tim Manolis's beautiful color illustrations. If you are looking at this book, don't hesitate...buy it...you won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE.......2003-03-31

Tim has done for Odes what Roger Tory Peterson did for birds!!! This is a must have for the Odesters in California.....

Please note that the reviewer above reviewed the used condiion of the lab book - and it's true that lab access codes are non transferable.
The on-line labs are as good as on-line labs get. Which means that they are thoughtful, but in no way substitute for actual hands-on lab experiences.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was expecting.......2005-09-12

The text book was the correct book I needed but it came with an internet access code for labs. I was under the impression that the access code had not been used and was still good. However, that was not the case. I had to purchase the internet labs separetly on line. The price for the labs plus the book was about the same as it would have been in the book store at school.

                  Book Description

Retains both the spirit and philosophy of the popular First Edition. The primary changes consist of the addition of new material on integral transforms, discrete and fast Fourier transforms, series solutions, harmonic analysis, spherical harmonics and a glance at some of the numerical techniques for the solution of boundary value problems. With more than enough material for a one-semester course, it offers a full presentation of basic principles, and advanced topics are covered in the largely self-contained closing chapters. The order of presentation of some of the material has been rearranged to provide more flexibility in arranging courses.

                  Book Description

Collected here in one volume are six works that represent nearly a quarter century in the productive life of one of the most accomplished and admired of American writers. They explore the private worlds of our "Gilded Age." A once free-spirited American woman in Paris tries to extricate herself from her marriage to a French aristocrat in "Madame de Treymes." A divorced mother finds herself in a strange romantic triangle in "The Mother's Recompense." Repressed passions smolder in small town New England in the classic "Ethan Frome," a tale of unhappy marriage and desperate love which erupts in an act of shattering violence, and in "Summer," which Wharton called the "hot 'Ethan.'" Also included here are "Old New York," four linked novellas set in succeeding decades from the 1840s to the 1870s, Wharton's renowned autobiography "A Backward Glance," and "Life and I," a fascinating autobiographical fragment published here for the first time.

                  Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Short novels of society.......2007-03-22

In a way, Edith Wharton was at her best in her novellas -- her stories are lean, taut and emotionally deep. And "Edith Wharton: Novellas and Other Writings" explores views on love, sex, marriage, the conventions of the 19th and early 20th century, and even her own life. They're not just fascinating, but beautifully written.

"Ethan Frome" is the male half of a loveless marriage, with the fretful, fussy Zeena. Then Zeena's lovely cousin Mattie Silver comes to live with them, and she brings out a happier, more passionate side of Ethan. But when Mattie is sent away, Ethan must make a decision. He knows he can't stay in his horrible marriage, so will he run away with Mattie? The choice they make will affect all three lives.

"Summer" shocked the 1917 public, with its frank-for-its-time look at a young woman's sexual awakening. It takes place in the New England village of North Dormer, where the young librarian Charity lives. But when Charity falls in love with an upper-class young rake named Lucius, she finds herself pregnant and unmarried -- a destructive combination in the 1900s. There's only one respectable way out.

"The Mother's Recompense" explores the difficulties of Kate Clephane, who abandoned her husband and daughter, and now lives as an unhappy divorcee on the Riviera. She's unexpectedly invited back, to attend her daughter's wedding -- only to find that her daughter's fiancee is one of Kate's ex-lovers. Now Kate has to wrestle her own regrets and jealousies, to figure out whether to tell her daughter the truth.

"Madame De Treymes" is a sort of Henry Jamesian novella, taking place in early twentieth-century Paris. It follows the unhappy lives abroad of two Americans -- the miserable Fanny Frisbee is married to a nasty aristocrat, and living in Paris. As a knight on a white horse, her friend John is trying to convince her to divorce her hubby and marry him...

"Old New York" is a collection of four novellas, exploring different facets of, well, Old New York -- family strife, adultery, illegitimate children, and a young man's inner changes. And "A Backward Glance" is totally different -- Wharton's autobiography, describing not only her life, but her friendships with the artists of the day, and the inspirations for her rich fiction.

Edith Wharton gave unvarnished looks at social conventions throughout her career -- she doesn't judge, she just tells it how it was, whether she's talking about the Roaring 20s or the uptight Victorian era. Divorce was almost unthinkable, affairs scandalous if revealed, and women had the cards stacked against them in matters of love, marriage and sex.

So her works are even better when you set them in context, full of characters who were totally unlike her. Some were male, some timid and naive, some disgraced (she herself was divorced, though this didn't hurt her socially), and some completely broken by society's dictates. Few of her characters are much like Wharton, but she gets inside their heads and makes them entirely believable.

Wharton's formal, often poetic writing style makes these stories all the richer. They're rich with light, smells, sounds and the swirl of nature, even in a city. But it's offset by the starkness of her stories -- if she took a hard look at hypocrises and social conventions, she didn't flinch from showing what happened to those that transgressed. It's realistic, but a bit depressing.

Doomed love and personal reflection are what makes up a lot of "Edith Wharton: Novellas and Other Writings," a magnificent collection of her shorter books. Sad and beautiful, gripping and classic.

                  5 out of 5 stars Ethan Frome.......2003-11-07

Ethan Frome is a man that has never been able to make decisions for himself. When he married his wife Zeena it the fact that she made a good companion for the situation with his mother. Their relationship was good at first but it slowly started to die when zeena became sickly. He always did what would be best for other people, but when zeena's cousin came to live with them he took time to see her because Mattie made him feel good about himself. Ethan has been in the same place all of his life and never found a true love. Then mattie came and for once ethan stopped looking at what would be best and started looking for that wonderful feeling.

4 out of 5 stars quick to read but still has a twisted plot.......1999-11-16

I had to read this in under two hours for a literary project and I was very pleased to discover an author who managed to write such a constant yet emotional plot in less than 100 pages. It still hasn't dawned on me whether or not Durham was sensible in his choice. I will be writing a full analysis this week so if ever you need help, email me, and I'd be glad to be of service. Good read for the intellectually stimulating conversationalists.

                    Book Description

On the hugely successful hit reality TV show The Apprentice, Donald Trump tells his contenders that location and pricing are supremely significant. But in his own life, there have been other maxims: Do whatever it takes to win. Don't spare the chutzpah. Always use the superlative. Make everything into an advertisement for yourself. Whatever happens, always claim victory. Following these personal commandments, he has turned bragging, self-inflation, and showing off into competitive advantages that have brought him national and international renown.

In Donald Trump: Master Apprentice, best-selling author Gwenda Blair recounts a true-life history with more twists and turns than any television producer could possibly imagine. Towering skyscrapers and glittering casinos, a luxury airline and a football-field-size yacht, steamy affairs and bitter lawsuits, near bankruptcy and stormy feuds -- all this and more are part of the life of Trump.

An adaptation and update of her definitive biography, The Trumps, this new book provides fresh material on Donald Trump's brushes with bankruptcy, mammoth construction projects, and ever-expanding place in American life. Drawing on recent interviews with the celebrated real estate magnate, his associates, his rivals, and contestants from his television show, Blair offers new insight into the man who seems to have it all. For the first time, we also get a glimpse of the person who will ultimately decide the fate of the Trump brand: Donald Trump, Jr., the real-life apprentice who hopes to put his own imprint on his father's empire.

I enjoyed her book on the Trump family history especially about the grandfather. This book however disappointed me. I found it to be a knockoff of the original trilogy with very little new material. Just being honest. I'm a true Trump devotee so I read everything out there on him, whether written by him or someone else.

Becoming a successful real estate developer in New York, one of America's most difficult cities, requires laser focus and ruthless tactics. So that's what Donald Trump and, to a lesser degree his father, Fred, brought to the job as they rose to power and fame. Journalist Gwenda Blair does a masterful, thoroughly reported job of describing the various forces, conflicts of interest, power plays, politics, personalities and near-criminal behavior that resulted in three FBI investigations (but no indictments) of Trump's various real estate deals. Blair provides insights about the family relationships and friendships that shaped Trump's personality and business deals. This is a careful study of the underside of the real estate development business and what it really takes to get big projects done in complex political and financial environments. Would most corporate managers find this book useful? Certainly. We think it provides fuel for thought and a new perspective on being relentless and persistent, as well as being pretty clear about the downside of lying and of having what Donald Trump calls a "killer instinct."

Probably one of the better books out there on him. But, as the title sez "Master Apprentice"... How fitting a name.

I would imagine his kids are going to have a tough time living in the shadows of this guy when he's dead. They'd be wise to start their own company and do it from scratch.

5 out of 5 stars Re-packaged and updated, in order to ride the wave.......2005-03-11

Everybody and his brother wants to ride along on Donald Trump's current wave of popularity. During the past year, we've seen books appear by Apprentice-candidate Amy Henry, first Apprentice winner Bill Rancic, board-room colleagues Carolyn Kepcher and George Ross, and naturally, several business / autobios by Trump himself. Now in early 2005, we have two new Trump biographies: this title, and "No Such Thing as Over-Exposure," by Robert Slater. But this one isn't entirely new. It's based on a longer book that Gwenda Blair released in 2000.

"The Trumps: Three Generations that Built an Empire" was a much thicker volume, divided into three equal sections: the first for grandpa Friedrich Trump's immigrant story, the second for father Fred Trump's rise in New York real estate, and the last for son Donald's takeover. Several glossy pages of photos were included so that we could see the family grow and change along the way. In "Master Apprentice," Blair used her previous work as a foundation. She stripped the Friedrich and Fred sections away, condensing more than 200 pages into an interwoven 6-page introductory backstory. She eliminated the photos. She kept the same chapter titles and structures for Donald's section and added a final 16-page chapter that covers the last five years, chronicling the Atlantic City bankruptcy and the tremendous fame surrounding "The Apprentice" TV show. The last four pages turn the reader's attention to Don Jr. and predict his own beginning success. While much of the original text remains the same, Blair should be given credit for retooling and refining some of the initial writing and adding new details where they are pertinent. The final outcome doesn't look or read like a slapdash piece, and it's not a carbon copy of "The Trumps."

Blair's work stands apart from the other books mentioned because of the substantive detail she's gleaned about every Trump deal ever made. (It's appropriate that many negotiations hinge on the Atlantic City properties, because the facts read like a never-ending Monopoly game gone tremendously awry.) Her research is exhaustive and her bibliography, extensive. She spoke to hundreds of individuals, though seemingly, not to Donald Trump himself. The result isn't a glowing account of its main subject but is about as neutral as it can be. The reader is left to decide whether Donald will ultimately ride off into the sunset with a white hat or a black one covering that signature coiffure. Given his drive to be the best and to have only the best, we know at least that the horse would be the fastest, the Stetson would be the largest, and they would both cost more than the average American's annual salary.

Read this book (or its predecessor) first. It will provide perspective for the rest of the titles in the Trump / Apprentice canon.

                        Book Description

This book contains over 150 photographs from three of the Scharnhorst's crewmember's photo albums and is a must have for every serious student of naval history. More than 70 of these fantastic photos were taken by crew members themselves and have never been published before! There are over 60 official Kriegsmarine photos that were given to crew members to start their albums, including the sinking of the British aircraft carrier Glorious and photos from the famous Channel dash. In addition, several pages reproduce a set of model builder plans for the Scharnhorst and her sister Gneisenau. These plans were sold to model builders in Germany in 1941.

More than a book of photos, the book gives a detailed account of the Scharnhorst's long cruise with her sister ship Gneisenau in the spring of 1940, including the battle with the Halifax convoys. Also is the story of the battle of North Cape, and the fateful decisions by the German High command that let to her sinking and the death of almost two thousand men.

The heart of the book are the photos from the Alfred Herman Rieger collection, the Max Henschler collection, and a stunning album of unknown ownership. Their photos show combat, the Scharnhorst fighting ice and heavy seas, an interesting series from Hitler's visit, as well as life on board. Many of the boys had some real talent as demonstrated by the artistic nature of their photos. While not part of the Technical Reference series, author Randall Shoker did add technical details in the captions describing the ships equipment in many of the photos. Model builders and historians alike will find the details in the photos and captions informative.

A compelling look at the struggle of the North Atlantic as seen through the camera lenses of the men who were there. If you are a student of the Kriegsmarine or the battle of the Atlantic, you must own this book. Book is in large format and is 128 pages long printed on heavy archival paper.

                        Book Description

George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four is among the most widely read books in the world. For more than 50 years, it has been regarded as a morality tale for the possible future of modern society, a future involving nothing less than extinction of humanity itself. Does Nineteen Eighty-Four remain relevant in our new century? The editors of this book assembled a distinguished group of philosophers, literary specialists, political commentators, historians, and lawyers and asked them to take a wide-ranging and uninhibited look at that question. The editors deliberately avoided Orwell scholars in an effort to call forth a fresh and diverse range of responses to the major work of one of the most durable literary figures among twentieth-century English writers.

As Nineteen Eighty-Four protagonist Winston Smith has admirers on the right, in the center, and on the left, the contributors similarly represent a wide range of political, literary, and moral viewpoints. The Cold War that has so often been linked to Orwell's novel ended with more of a whimper than a bang, but most of the issues of concern to him remain alive in some form today: censorship, scientific surveillance, power worship, the autonomy of art, the meaning of democracy, relations between men and women, and many others. The contributors bring a variety of insightful and contemporary perspectives to bear on these questions.

                        Literature-Book Review

Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, published by Penguin Books

WHAT a cleverly written, a very enticing book to read with a much unexpected twist in the end. George Orwell showcases his brilliant writing skills in this marvellous book. For those who have read Animal Farm, they should know what to expect in this brilliantly written book. This book explores the rule of totalitarianism, how the world has not come to terms with totalitarianism. This should keep you in suspense from the first chapter till the last chapter. This is not for the faint hearted, but for those who are political minded. This is a true breath taking fiction. The style is not fast paced as it entices you to read more.

George Orwell writes about a world where there is no happiness whatsoever. The book is set in 1984 in a country called Oceania. This country is ruled by Big Brother with his party known as The Party. A world where laughter is tears, where love is turned to hate. A world where there are no emotions, only misery in people's hearts. `Thoughtcrime does not entail death: thoughtcrime is death.' The novel tells of how you're supposed to be a supporter of Big Brother. If you have thoughts of your own, that are resistant to Big Brother's party you die.
The protagonist is Winston Smith. He has a quest of his own. His will is to go against The Party's teachings and rules. He believes that if he wants to remain sane, he should follow his own heart and mind.

In this heart moving novel George Orwell showcases his journalistic writing skills. Even if you not keen of politics but this one is surely a winner.
