You get what you pay for.......2003-04-23

This volume is a nice way to start getting interested in Native American rock symbols that can be found in the southwest. It's a convenient size for hiking trips, or just to carry around if you live in the region. But it's also small enough to lose in a pile of matches. It's slightly informative, you must remember that not a lot is actually known about the meaning of the rock symbols, and this volume is not the defining one when it comes to the intricacies of reading rock symbols. It is enough to get the basics down. There are better works out there for the serious enthusiast, but if you're just trying to enjoy a vacation more, then yeah, get this and throw it in your pocket.

Great Little Primer on Petroglyphs.......2001-08-19

This is an easy to digest beginners book on rock art of the Four Corners States (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah). It is small enough to tuck in a backpack or jacket pocket to take along on your hike. The illustrations of the petroglyphs are bold and clear. Between the well written background information and the wonderful drawings this little 32 page book is a must for anyone who wants to begin to gain insight on the rock symbols that the ancient peoples have left behind.

Awaiting the 2000 edition!.......1999-12-01

What a wonderful guide. We travel extensively, always with the Interstate Exit Authority as our companion on road trips. However, our current edition is 1998. We anxiously await the 1999/2000 edition to be available. Anyone have a clue when that might be?

Excellent once I understood how the book worked.......1999-01-21

Everyone should have this book. They will know what is at the exit and if the rig they have will fit at the gas station, shopping etc. Rest areas and dumps are a must and the Exit Authority has done a fabulous job of them. They have saved us many times over. Now I need a authority on the other highways that are not interstate. Where can I find that? This Exit Authority is a must for everyone whether they have an RV or just touring in an automobile. Great work.

I travel from Michigan to Florida with my family every summer. This year we bought a copy of the Exit Authority and let me tell you what -- it is GREAT! We used it every time we wanted to stop somewhere. We even let the kids get in on the act and they loved it too. I recommend it!

GREAT book on Bats!.......2001-08-06

I don't have a science background but I was looking for a book on bats with more detail than just the basics that all the books I had found up until this point provided. This book is great!!! Its technical yet understandable and it goes to a depth of info that the lay person who just wants to have a greater understanding for bats needs.

To give you an idea of some of the content, the chapters include: evolution and diversity, flight (how the wings work, evolution of flight, demands on the bat), echolocation (how they make the sounds, how they avoid being confused by othre bats, using echolocation for navigation, use of echolocation in finding food), hibernation (facinating!!! how they stay warm, the cost of being in torpor state), reproduction & development (great if you've got a bat house and wonder what's going on in there), roosting behavior, feeding, and the importance of bats/conservation.

I just think this is a great book. I had so many questions about bats - the more I thought about them and wondered about them the more complex they became to me and this book really shed light on my questions. Its terrific. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in going below the surface knowledge of what bats are and what they do and where they fit in the web of life. They'e incredible.

Certain Fairytales in Particular.......2005-10-30

I found Hesse fairy tales enlightening; three in particular stood out. One is "If the War Continues", which I studied in Intermediate German in college. This is an example of how war
will trample on individual freedom; it carries shades of 1984, with Big Brother forbidding wearing of leather shoes, taking walk without permit. This tale does EXAGGERATE wartime restrictions; indeed, in OUR history, even in the two World Wars, civilians could wear leather shoes and take walks when they saw fit. Yes, there was rationing; yes, news was censored; yes, non-essential goods were not manufactured; yes, non-essential travel was
frowned on. I wonder if Germany under the Hohenzollerns in WWI
(and Hitler in WWII) had restrictions that Hesse mentioned. This
story is eloquent of Hesse pacifist views.
There is also "The Difficult Path", which shows that however
difficult it is to achieve a goal, it can be achieved with will and vision.
Most of all, I remember-- and enjoy-- "Flute Dream". This, too, I studied first in intermediate German in college. This
tale is of young man leaving home with talents-- but no focus.
He met girl who kissed him and gave him bread, as he utilized his singing talent. However, he walked on, passing up not only a relationship but an outlet for his talents. Then he boarded a boat piloted by an old man, seeing this as opportunity knocking.
The young man's songs were not appreciated, and he regretted taking this course, seeing as night came on, that he must identify with the old man. He also was told by the helmsman that there is no way back, but when he took the helm, the old man disappeared, and HE BECAME the old man! What this is about is young adults' going off on their own with talents AND idealism, but no focus, so when they DO see opportunity to be creative and use their talents, and be REALLY successful THAT way, they pass it up, seeking ring dang doo or whatever. THEN they jump at what LOOKS like opportunity but is really a dead end! IT can take the form of having high goals but winding up in dead-end job for life
OR-- GETTING to the TOP NOT by being creative, using talents, but MINDLESS CONFORMISM, being yes-men. So, "Flute Dream" sym-
bolizes, among other things, idealism and high hopes, but missing
opportunity and heading for dead end, from lack of focus. I was blind to this in college, then when I LATER read it in English, part of Strange News From Another Star, I did not grasp this meaning. Now, I am thankful to have copy of Hesse's Fairy Tales,
as I have more grasp of meaning of "Flute Dream", and should find others that give insights.

A felicitous pairing.......2005-02-19

For readers of a certain age (like myself), the pairing of Hermann Hesse & Donovan will be a delight in itself. But I hasten to add that Donovan is a superb reader for these evocative stories: always articulate, precise, and just a touch ethereal. Add to that the tasteful scattering of guitar notes at appropriate junctures, and you have the words of a master conveyed by a masterful performer. Joyfully recommended!

mixed feelings.......2004-01-22

i read this because a friend of mine had recommended it to me.. Overall, i could see that the stories ( more of short stories with morals - or at least his own philosophies - than actual fairy tales, except for some supernatural stuff, style, and/or the setting ) were crystals of some great thoughts...
BUT it wasn't.. exactly enthralling (to read).
I'm not sure if it's the translation or personal preference.

Great stories . . . Not so great translation.......2003-10-07

Though the dust jacket claims that the bulk of these stories are appearing here in English for the first time, only a handful haven't appeared in English elsewhere. Hunt down copies of "Stories of Five Decades," "Strange News from Another Star," "If the War Goes On . . .", "Pictor's Metamorphasis," and "Tales of a Student's Life" and you'll have 18 out of 22 of these stories. Zipes' translations themselves are a bit lackluster, and do not really capture the spirit of these texts. That being said, the stories themselves are brilliant, and he does present a good cross-section of Hesse's shorter works.

Stories have been translated better in other collections.......2003-10-07

Though the book claims that this collections translates most of these stories for the first time, almost all of them have appeared in English in other books previously. Zipes' translations are fairly clunky and do not capture the nuances of Hesse's original text -- nor do they match up to previously translated collections of Hesse's shorter works. You'd be better of hunting down Hesse's stories at the used book stores.

Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Corsican obscurity in 1769. He was involved in patriotic struggle in Corsica; studied at a French military school and won his fame during the French Revolution. Napoleon has had millions upon millions of words and thousands of books written upon his fabled career. In his life he became emperor of the French; fought the major powers of the nineteenth century such as Britain, Austria, Prussia, Austria and Russia; wed and divorced Josephine; married Maria Louise of Austria; lost at Waterloo and died in exile on the island of St. Helena.
Robert Asprey is an American historian who has authored several books of military history. This book is the first volume in a brisk two volume work. Asprey has a plain style; briefly covers major battles such as
the Battle of the Nile, Maregno and Austerlitz and delves into the love life and mecurial character of the little corporal who was the cynosure of so much adulation and hatred in the nineteenth century world.
Asprey does not go into excessive detail in describing military actions and his maps are few and far between. His coverage of diplomacy is not filled with details but does give the general reader an idea of the issues involved. If you seek a more scholarly and detailed look at the battles pick up the hefty tome "The Campaigns of Napoleon" by the eminent David Chandler; if you want more of the life of the average soldier in the French army turn to John Elting and if you want all the sexy intrigue of the Napoleonic court turn to Evangeline Bruce.
If, however, you are a student or a neophyte to Napoleonic study this fine general biography will be a good place to begin study of the Napoleon era.
Asprey is balanced in his portrait of Napoleon who was neither saint nor sinner but a tough, brilliant battlefield commander who worshipped at the shrine of power and egomania.I recommend this book and the second volume "The Reign of Napoleon Bonaparte." Good reading!

Eminently Readable Napolean Biography.......2007-09-13

Robert Asprey has delivered an outstanding look at one of the world's greatest military minds and leaders.

Not focusing simply on Napolean's personal life, Asprey paints his character's life and actions against the canvas of then-current events, such as the French Revolution.

Asprey's literary style is efficient but entertaining, and he does not encumber the reader with military minutia -- an accomplishment considering his subject.

If you seek a biography to explain who Napolean was and what he did -- this is a great start.

Good Read.......2007-03-20

I am a high school senior who is planning to major in history in college I thought that it was a very engaging book even for my limited vocabulary and reading ability. It is truly an unbiased essay on Napoleon's life and adds an element I've never found before. Asprey shows what we are all missing out on when people write biased biographies. A must have if you want a book on Napoleon's life, military battles, and his destructive relationship with that (expletive) Josephine. Hope you guys like it.

All the major events are covered, but there is little or no analysis/detailed description of those events. If you have little or no previous knowledge of Napoleon, this book would leave you thinking that the battle of Austerlitz was really not a big deal at all.

Very disappointing read.

Great biography--for those already familiar with the subject.......2006-12-21

I did my usual speed-reading of the first 100 pages, then realized I didn't really understand a lot of things about who Napoleon was, what he was doing, or why. Figuring I'd managed to skip the relevant information I carefully re-read those pages. Still confused, I tried it again. No joy.

Examples: the Jacobin Club is mentioned. Robespierre is tossed about with abandon. Someone named Louis XXXVIII, and Marie Antoinette are mentioned. Etc, etc. I happily admit my ignorance. (I'm probably more familiar with his military strategy than the average person, but I play Napoleonic-era wargames.)

My knowledge of the French Revolution is limited to "Let them eat cake," beheadings with ze guillotine, and mass riots. While I didn't expect an expert-level education about the revolution from a book about Napoleon, I didn't realize it explains absolutely nothing about what was going on at the time.

If you're already familiar with Napoleon and the environment in late 18th-century Europe you will probably enjoy this work. If you aren't familar with either subject there are most certainly better biographies--though I don't believe any written in the last 10 years are worthwhile for any except the specialists.

Very comprehensive but much information is out of date.......1999-09-17

At the time this book was written it surely would have been the best source of information on Russian submarines. The book covers in depth every class of Russian submarine; included are long narratives, specifications, line drawings and photos you will not find anywhere else. About 2/3 of the book covers everything up to the end of WW2. The remainder covers the cold war years. Sadly, much of the information is quite out of date and most systems are referred to by their NATO codenames rather than their actual names, all of which is understandable considering the time it was written. Basically, every piece of information available at the time concerning Russian subs is in this book. If you're a fanatic about Russian/Soviet submarines, this book is well worth the price.
