        Book Description

        The Arthurian Age; the Celtic Twilight; the Dark Ages; the Birth of England; these are the powerfully romantic names often given to one of the most confused yet vital periods in British history. It is an era upon which rival Celtic and English nationalisms frequently fought. It was also a period of settlement, and of the sword. This absorbing volume by David Nicolle transports us to an England shrouded in mystery and beset by savage conflict, a land which played host to one of the most enduring figures of our history – Arthur.

        4 out of 5 stars British Military History AD 300-1100.......2007-04-02

        This book has virtually nothing to do with the 'Arthurian' period, much less literature. It generally focuses on giving a brief overview of British arms, armor, and armies between the later days of the Roman occupation to the eve of the Norman conquest. The text also briefly touches on the Irish, Scots, and Picts. Plates are good as usual, as is the text, but just not enough space.

        4 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2005-10-21

        This Osprey covers a pretty large period of time, but gives a good overview of the period in British history from the withdrawal of the Romans to the establishment of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and Norse invasions. Great illustrations by McBride.

        4 out of 5 stars The English Dark Ages.......2005-07-02

        If you want to find out about the time of Darkness for the sceptor island after the Romans left, then here you go. If you want to learn about the once and future King then you have come to the wrong book. Wonderful pictures that help one "see" the bad old days of England.

        5 out of 5 stars The Brightest Dark Ages.......2004-05-28

        This book is, so far, my favourite made by the "team" David Nicolle and Angus McBride; complementing a great and concise text by David Nicolle is some of the best artwork made by Angus McBride.
        The text is divided in the following parts: introduction, chronology, the Arthurian age, Saxon and Celt, Britain and the Vikings.
        The text provides a brief but very good introduction to the subject (Britain from the end of Roman dominion to the battle of Hastings) and is complemented by a fairly good bibliography (for further reading on the subject); perhaps this bibliography could be updated by the publishers or author (online?) as the book was published 20 years ago.
        As I am an amateur illustrator I will take a little more space talking about the colour plates.
        Honestly I can say that all of them are great!
        When I got the book and was looking at the colour plates, every new one astonished me; the details, the composition and the atmosphere are superb in all of the illustration.
        Next I will talk about each plate and present some of the best aspects of each one.
        Plate A depicts a group of late roman soldiers; the faces of all of them and the helmet of figure 1;
        Plate B presents some Anglo-Saxon warriors; the helmets and the entire figure 1;
        Plate C (used in the cover art) is about a Romano-British warriors; the atmosphere and composition;
        Plate D illustrates Pictish and north-British warriors; the atmosphere (at night) and the face of figure 3;
        Plate E is about Ireland; again the faces, figure 2 and the army in the background;
        Plate F (my favourite) represents a 9th century English king and a warrior and a monk; the composition, the atmosphere and details as the king's cloths;
        Plate G illustrates some Scandinavians warriors; the composition and the armour of figure 1 and the tunic of figure 3;
        Plate H (one of the best) the composition and the atmosphere (in battle).
        Either you are interested in the subject or really like good artwork this is really a must buy book!

        4 out of 5 stars The real King Arthur.......2002-08-07

        Dr. Nicolle once again sheds light on an era that is foggy. Anyone interested in the peoples that rose up from the ashes of Rome will find this book stimulating. Excellent illustrations, as usual, from Angus Mcbride. Cons ( true for most of the Osprey books ): the timespan is perhaps too great for a work of this size ( 4th Century to 11th century ). Not enough concise maps. Pros: Sums up the major political trends that set the stage for the Normans. Exposed me for the first time to the real Arthur. Hence, 4 stars instead of 5.

          5 out of 5 stars A fascinating book.......2003-04-02

          In this fascinating book, author Michael Holmes takes the historical references to fifth and sixth century Britain, and attempts to construct a chronology that fills in the details of this "Dark Age." Combining the information from a number of sources, often interpreted in new ways, he produces a thought-provoking history that helps to explain the different courses taken by Post-Roman Celtic Gaul (later France) and Post-Roman Celtic Britain (later England). Along the way, he finds that the legends passed on by the bards and storytellers ring true: that there was a great military leader named Arthur.

          This is a fascinating book that I have already read twice. The author presents his argument in such a gripping manner, that reading it seems to pull the reader right into the story. It must be admitted that a good deal of what is presented in this book is deduction and assumption, but the author makes an excellent case for accepting his interpretation of the available (limited) data. If you are interested in the historic King Arthur, then I highly recommend that you get this book.

          5 out of 5 stars A very creative synthesis of all sources.......2001-08-17

          It is fascinating to read how Michael Holmes gathered evidence from many sources, minus the legendary stuff, to create a marvelous synthesis of the story of King Arthur and his military exploits. Holmes' study of history, archeology and British geography surely points out a plausible account of how Arthur influenced the future history of Britain in contrast to neighboring Gaul (France). After my reading the separate but conflicting histories, and my recent tour of Britain, I am persuaded by Holmes' account that his is most plausible. Any student of military history would also be intrigued and educated by the strategies utilized by Celts, Romans, and Anglo-Saxons in their military campaigns of the late Roman Empire and Dark Ages.

          4 out of 5 stars A Refreshing research of 5th & 6th century........2000-04-01

          Having read extensively about Arthur and his legendary exploits, Holmes presentation examines the British history of the period against comparisons with the old western Roman empire, and the results are well worth effort. I found his conclusions believable, his theories refreshing and very interesting. He has approached this presentation in the same manner as would be done in making an intelligence assessment using all the known facts, grading levels of confidence, and speculating about a reasonable outcome. He does this very well and I am impressed with his efforts. Worth reading again. It surpasses any other material I have read so far.

          3 out of 5 stars Review of King Arthur, A Military History.......1999-12-17

          The author does a good job of summarizing the situation in Britain following the withdrawl of the Romans: the threats represented by the Anglo-Saxons, Picts, and Irish are well covered. I found the discussion contrasting the Anglo-Saxon threat to Celtic Britain and the Frankish threat to Celtic Gaul very interesting.

          His thesis that Britain and France developed differently largely because of the relative success of the British in delaying the eventual Germanic takeover compared to the rapid collapse of native forces in Gaul seems well-reasoned.

          I agree with the other reviewers, however, that the chapters on the books primary subject, Arthur, are close to useless. Far too much is supposedly proved based on too little evidence. Arthur was a war leader in late 5th century Britain, almost everything beyond that is speculation and inference.

          Buy this book for a good, concise history of Early Britain, not for King Arthur.

                  Doom, the video game in which you navigate a dungeon in the first person and messily lay waste to everything that crosses your path, represented a milestone in many areas. It was a technical landmark, in that its graphics engine delivered brilliant performance on ordinary PC hardware. It was a social phenomenon, with individuals and companies hooking up networks specifically for Doom tournaments and staying up for days to blast away on them (well before the Internet went big-time). The game's publisher, id Software, used an unusual shareware marketing strategy (give away the first levels, charge for the more advanced ones) that worked very well. On top of it all, the gore-filled game raised serious questions about decency in products meant for use by school-age kids. Masters of Doom explores the Doom phenomenon, as well as the lives and personalities of the two men behind it: John Carmack and John Romero.

                  This book manages, for the most part, to keep clear of the breathless techno-hagiography style that characterizes many books with similar subjects. He tells the story of Carmack, Romero, and id--which includes far more than Doom and its successors--in novel style, and he's done a good job of keeping the action flowing and the characters' motivations clear. Some of the quoted passages of dialog sound like idealized reconstructions that probably never came from the lips of real people, but this is an entertaining and informative book, of interest to anyone who's let rip with a nail gun. --David Wall

                  Topics covered: The biographies of John Carmack and John Romero, and of their company, id Software. The development and marketing of all major id games (including Wolfenstein, Doom, Doom II, and Quake) get lavish attention.

                  Book Description

                  Masters of Doom is the amazing true story of the Lennon and McCartney of video games: John Carmack and John Romero. Together, they ruled big business. They transformed popular culture. And they provoked a national controversy. More than anything, they lived a unique and rollicking American Dream, escaping the broken homes of their youth to produce the most notoriously successful game franchises in history—Doom and Quake— until the games they made tore them apart. This is a story of friendship and betrayal, commerce and artistry—a powerful and compassionate account of what it's like to be young, driven, and wildly creative.

                  My ONLY complaint and this is super picky, is that I wished they would have gone into more depth on the technical aspects of Doom and especially quake. I realize this isn't a technical book but it still would have been neat to read.

                  Overall, this is an awesome book.

                  5 out of 5 stars GREAT MATERIAL.......2007-05-13

                  I own this Book for two years already and I must have read it about 5 times from cover to cover! It's a great piece of Art and should be read by anyone that lived in the yearly 90's and that had the chance to play the very first hit's of ID Software (the first Quake and the first Doom).

                  The Book is very well written. It brought me back so many memories! That I though I had forgot. But the best is that, by reading the book, you get to know how everything you loved was developed, implemented and created. And "why" certain thing were done the way they were.

                  It traces a complete Novel from when Carmack and Romero were kids from the Empire that ID Software build upon Carmack genius and passion for FPS and Romero killer business and marketing instincts. It's good to remind that although ID Software are credited to the "Two Johns", all the ID staff is also part of the pillar. And they are all mentioned in the course of the book (many left the company in the middle of many projects but they were accuratly mentioned).

                  The book tells the story from the very beginning, until the pre-realease of DOOM3. It covers every aspect you could want to know.

                  As a plus, you can keep in mind that Carmack and Romero had to sign a contract stating that the Book doesn't have a single line of untruth been spoke. Random House could only publish the book after that. So it is all true.

                  And there you have it! All the sinister and stunning truth about how one of the biggest pop Icons of the 90's was created... and still lives on.

                  5 out of 5 stars Masterful.......2007-02-26

                  I bought this book after seeing the wonderful "Make Love not Warcraft" episode on South Park, the show that keeps mature people like me updated. There are those who live in the world, and there are those who live in the world of video games. And then there are those who live in the world of books about those who live in the world of video games. I'm one of those, apparently, because I couldn't put this book down. The last video game I played on my computer was Wayout, back in 1987, and this book mentioned the game on page 158. Given my limited knowledge of the gaming world, the book seemed thorough, and provided a twice-removed voyeur a peek at the fascinating, seminal years of this industry.

                  David Kushner did a great job researching and writing "Masters of Doom", a book that focuses on the experiences of John Carmack and John Romero, whose collaboration climaxed with the development and publication of Doom. He spent hours - days - weeks interviewing the key players and then remarkably translated that information into an insider's view of this world. It's a play-by-play and blow-by-blow account of their separate early years, then their meeting and half-decade of collaboration, followed by rivalry and falling-out, then their separate endeavors with "id" and "ion storm" software companies. Much of this happens in the unlikely locales of Shreveport, Madison and Dallas during the 1990s, although the book's materials go into the early 2000s. Kushner puts you right there with them, as close to a play script as a book can get. I would highly recommend "Masters of Doom" to anyone who wants a little insight into the landscape of this world and these two pivotal, fascinating individuals.

                  If I have any criticism, it's that the book is very calculated, and possibly exaggerated, to fit a particular genre: that of the gee-whiz, look at those fascinating, wacky geniuses. It's an idealization of the early "visionaries" of the PC and internet world, along the lines of "Hackers" and "Where Wizards Stay Up Late," and it tends to put extreme emphasis on the special role of individuals in that process. The two Johns were part of a big industry that had many talented individuals, but was driven by technological developments and capital. Like other developments, from the steam engine forward, this world included some interesting and often contradictory, driven individuals who sometimes either succumbed to, or insulated themselves from, the personal trappings, rewards and punishments associated with their roles. Kushner's thesis, which may well be true, is that John R succumbed and John C insulated, and thus we have the material for a gripping story.

                  5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Easy Read.......2006-11-10

                  "The Two Johns" (Carmack and Romero) had been described as the Lennon and McCartney of video games, and I think that's a great moniker, especially after reading this book. Written in an engaging, easy-to-follow style, the reader is taken inside the environment and motivation for many decisions and inspirations for why they did what they did. I found that fascinating!

                  Each accomplished in their own right, I don't think they really appreciated each other's talents and abilities until after they split up. It would be interesting to see what they can create with each other, now that they are older, financially successful and are driven (possibly?) by different things.

                  At about 300 pages, it's a very entertaining read for anyone interested or involved with the games industry; others may find the interpersonal dynamics of a young startup insightful and enlightening.

                  5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2006-08-24

                  The book was a brilliant read for me from 2 stand points. First as a gamer, it was really interesting to see all the backroom dynamics that went into producing my favourite games of my adolescent years. Wolf 3D, Doom, Quake... All the talent, hardwork, egos, ups and downs.... The author does a really good job of bringing the past alive; it's as if you were there watching the scene play out

                  From an organizational/ business stand point it was just intriguing. From the outside, we see the final product and we make sweeping statements about its success (or failure) yet the book shows us that there were so many more things going behind the scenes than we actually could have imagined.

                      This is a superb memoir of the Civil War. First published in the 1890's like so many other memoirs it differs in that the author is writing from his dairy. While other memoirs from the period seem nostalgic and full of bravado Andrews tells it like it was, with few tangential passages to muddy the flow of his narrative. The matter of fact recounting of this soldier's life is a melody of endless boredom in camp, child-like wonder at a world he otherwise would not have seen, heartrending pathos and sometimes side-splitting humor. A modern editor's footnotes correct Andrews sometimes mistaken beliefs regarding large-scale events and historical details and add addition context for the narrative. This is a great book, both for the Civil War scholar and the casual reader.

                        Book Description

                        This provocative and timely work examines various scenarios in which the deployment of nuclear weapons could occur, the probable consequences of such an escalation, the likely world reactions, and the plausible policy ramifications. Rather than projecting the physical damage that would result from nuclear attacks, George H. Quester offers an exploration of the political, psychological, and social aftermath of nuclear conflict.

                        The prospect of nuclear attack -- sixty years after atomic bombs destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki -- is difficult to confront on many levels. We may avoid the discussion for emotional reasons, for fear of generating a self-confirming hypothesis, or simply because of the general "nuclear taboo." But there are also self-denying propositions to be harnessed here: if the world gives some advance thought to how nuclear weapons might be used again, such attacks may be headed off.

                        If the world avoids nuclear weapons use until the year 2045, it will be able to celebrate one hundred years of nuclear concord. Quester suggests that this may be achieved through the careful consideration of possible nuclear deployment scenarios and their consequences. In this insightful analysis, he provides a starting point for informed and focused reflection and preparation.

                          Customer Reviews:

                          4 out of 5 stars Authoritative management handbook, somewhat repetitive.......2006-06-02

                          This is a book on wilderness and wilderness management policy, intended for use in undergraduate courses on forestry, recreational management, and similar topics. The book would also be a useful resource for professionals to have on their shelves, since it includes texts of some legislation, planning document guidelines, and other reference material in addition to a long bibliography.

                          The book does not assume any specialized knowledge in a particular discipline but would be accessible to any college-level reader. Like other textbooks, it can be a bit dry, but it's better than most. The book's coverage of wilderness issues is both exhaustive and authoritative, and specialists contributed several of the chapters.

                          Using specialist contributors has one important disadvantage: the book is repetitive in many places. The problem is that issues that contributor X views as essential for his or her topic are either (a) the subject of a previous chapter; or (b) also essential for contributor Y's chapter, and thus addressed in both places. I would estimate that one-fourth of the entire text could be eliminated by a strong editor - - or by forcing each contributor to read the entire book, which will never happen. (Voice of experience on this one, folks.)

                          Though it includes chapters on the history of wilderness legislation, and brief summaries of how countries outside the US handle wilderness, the bulk of the book is intended to help people who manage wilderness areas. Their approach is technical and managerial, and tries to ignore the political environment as much as possible. For example, the authors don't discuss political pressures on management decisions in wilderness areas. To take one illustration, it is well known that outfitters make strong demands for certain uses in some wildernesses, and that they have the local and/or state clout to make those demands effective. Dealing with politics is part of the management problem, and it would have been helpful to address those issues in the book.

                          That said, this is really the best book out on there on the topic, though in some respects, it's the only book. It does a good job but there is room for improvement as I have noted, so it's a four-star effort.

                          5 out of 5 stars Resources are hard to find.......2003-05-23

                          I have searched for a comprehensive, all-in-one resource for a long time. Here it is. Previously, I would have to gather info piecemeal and try to filter and organize. No longer. Engaging writing, easy to follow. Good index. 5 stars based on the fact that there's not much else out there in this arcane field. Otherwise 4 stars because both glossaries could be improved. Only a few acronyms are covered in the existing glossary of acronyms. Biggest complaint? Authors take pains to date citations in the text but sometimes overlook placing dates to establish timeline in the text. One must sometimes backtrack to learn a timeline and at times, one must just out-and-out guess.

                          5 out of 5 stars Especially written for wilderness stewards.......2002-09-08

                          Collaboratively written by John C. Hendee (Professor Emeritus of the University of Idaho Wilderness Research Center) and Chad P. Dawson (Professor of Recreation Resources Management, College of Environmental Science and Forestry, State University of New York--Syracuse), and in an completely updated third edition, Wilderness Management: Stewardship And Protection Of Resources And Values is a comprehensive, 640-page reference and resource on wilderness stewardship and the protection of wilderness resources. Individual chapters present resources and information on U.S. legal authority with regard to wild areas, wild ecosystems, managing wilderness recreation, and a great deal more. Especially written for wilderness stewards and U.S. federal land management agencies, is also very highly recommended for environmental activists and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the upkeep of natural lands. Wilderness Management is a benchmark publication and an essential, core addition to professional, academic, and community library Environmental Studies reference collections.
