Book Description
This book breaks new ground: it is the first complete listing and guide to all the known reptiles of the five East African countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi.) Written by expert East African herpetologists, it incorporates virtually all known information on the East African reptile fauna. Nearly 500 high-quality color photographs illustrate most of the species involved, many of which have never been illustrated in color before. Keys and introductory essays are included for all orders, families, genera, and species, giving clear introductions for every group. There is an individual account for each species, describing its appearance, habits, and habitat, accompanied by a map showing its known distribution within East Africa and notes indicating its Africa-wide distribution as well. Hence this book will be useful not only in East Africa, but in the surrounding countries as well, for which no reptile guides exist. In addition, the descriptions of dangerous snakes include a section on their venom. A comprehensive appendix discusses aspects of snakebite risk and treatment in East Africa and the do's and don'ts of first aid.
Key Features:
- Illustrates nearly all of the c. 420 species found in East Africa
- Contains keys and full descriptions to aid identification
- Contains a distribution map for every species
- Provides information on snakebite and effective first aid

Maximum.......2004-06-26
This is the most perfect book for any snake or reptile fan.
More an Encyclopedia than a Field Guide.......2004-06-17
This book is amazingly detailed, giving in-depth information on ALL species of reptile known to occur in the five countries covered.
The photographs are of excellent quality (though where none was available, drawings would have been better than nothing) and the keys very user-friendly.
It is an absolute must for anyone interested in the herpetofauna of this region.
A word of warning though: despite the title this book is much too bulky and heavy to carry around on the field!
More likely, you will want to keep it at home (or in your car?) as a reference.
Wow!.......2004-04-07
This is a remarkable collection of information on a sorely needed region of herpetology. Not just for advanced hobbyists either...this book has WONDERFUL photographs and is a MUST have for any level of reptile enthusiast.
REFERENCE for east african herpetology !.......2004-03-02
A great book, with descriptions and photos of al known east african reptiles, including distribution maps.
Which i must say could have a little bet bigger and easier to read(country references).
If you are interested in finding the reptiles in the field or keeping them in captivity, you must own this book !
Excellent Reptile Resource and Field Guide.......2002-02-17
The long-awaited field guide to the diverse reptile populations of East Africa. This book was everything I expected it to be and more. Comprehensive listings, excellent photography and detailed information on habitat/distribution, natural history, conservation status etc. I can't say enough good things about this book, the list of authors should speak for themselves! ;-)
No serious herper's library is complete without this book...

Book Description
Nitrogen fixation research is presented as a rapidly developing, synergistic area of modern science, using the methods of, and accumulating data from, many fundamental branches of biology and chemistry. These include catalytic mechanisms, protein structure and function, molecular organization of genes and the regulation of their activities, biochemistry of plants and microorganisms, the signalling and surface interactions between organisms, microbial taxonomy and evolution, formal and population genetics, and ecology. The relationships between biological nitrogen fixation research and different branches of applied biology are addressed and analyzed, such as: the monitoring of genetically engineered microorganisms, selection of plant-associated microbes, plant breeding, increasing the protein content of crops, providing ecologically safe food production, and diminishing the chemical pollution of the environment. Immediate impacts and long-term prospects for nitrogen fixation research are presented: both fundamentals and applications.

Book Description
Guarding Your Business outlines the organizational elements that must be in place to protect the information and physical assets of typical businesses and organizations. The book recognizes the need for an architecture integrated within the organizational environment for systematic protection. Such an architecture is offered along with the building blocks to make organizations resistant to human error and resilient under physical attack or natural disaster. The book addresses risk assessment, determination of quality-of-service levels that balance safety versus cost, security versus privacy, determination of access rights to data and software, and a security-conscious culture in the organization. Questions answered by experts from academia and industry include: How can one organize for security? What organizational structures, policies, and procedures must be in place? What legal and privacy issues must be addressed?

5 stars or more.......2006-06-25
- at least for taking on the subject... much more consise and readable then the paired with it The Tree of Life by Sis. Also very much recommend "Our Family Tree: An Evolution Story" for kids from 3 to 9.
A book introducing the concept of evolution to the general public is expertly told for young readers.......2005-09-12
This 48-page history of Charles Darwin's famous sea voyage that was to ultimately result in his publishing a book introducing the concept of evolution to the general public is expertly told for young readers by Mark Bergin and perfectly complemented by the outstanding full color artwork and illustrations by Mark Bergin. Beginning with an informative and concise introduction of the life of Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882), Inside The Beagle With Charles Darwin presents the ship "Beagle" being outfitted for the multi-year voyage, life on board ship, Darwin's exploration of the rainforest, finding fossils, returning home after visiting New Zealand and Australia, and then how Darwin arranged what he'd found, the deductions he made from his findings, and the basic concept that became known as the theory of evolution. Enhanced with a timeline of the voyage, a chronological list of Darwin's life and works, a glossary, and an index, Inside The Beagle With Charles Darwin is a seminal and strongly recommended addition to all grade school and community library Science History collections for children.

Book Description
This is the first serious study of the little known Third Anglo-Afghan War and the subsequent campaign in Waziristan and it is based on original official and private papers backed by contemporary photographs and specially drawn maps.
Using contemporary sources, as well as analysis based on a lifetime study of military history, the author provides a vivid and thoughtful study of perhaps the last of the great Imperial campaigns. The British deployed virtually the full panoply of contemporary military technology- artillery, machine guns, trench mortars, armoured cars, mechanical transport and aircraft. When the Indian infantry proved unable to cope with the tribesmen there were even calls for the use of poison gas. Yet in the end it all came down, as always, to the infantry with rifle, bayonet and grenade and the book has tales of sacrifice and gallantry, as well as panic where generals jostled with soldiers in aneffort to find a way out. The author brings out the vital nature of the RAF's contribution and of the gallantry of the pilots flying obsolescent and unreliable aircraft over difficult mountainous terrain in hot weather and with the raid on Kabul, strategic bombing could be said to have arrived.
Above all, the author has created a vivid portrait of the Fontier warfare in which generations of British soldiers learned their trade - Slim, Montgomery, Alexander, Auchinleck, Wavell to name a few.
Book Description
Grounded in basic political science research, yet readily accessible to undergraduates, PROMISE AND PERFORMANCE uses the title's theme as an organizing framework for studying American Politics. The promise of democracy is analyzed using four core values: Popular Sovereignty, Political Freedom, Political Equality and Majority Rule/Minority Rights and is further explored in several new features including "Living the Promise" and "Promise and Policy" boxes. The performance part of the theme is then integrated with an assessment at the end of every chapter along with a concluding policy chapter. Solid scholarship and writing makes this an ideal text not just for reading and learning, but also as an example of how political science is researched and written by the practitioners in academia.

Book Description
Reducing environmental hazard and human impact on different ecosystems, with special emphasis on rural landscapes is the main topic of different environmental policies designed in developed countries and needed in most developing countries.
This book covers the bioindication approach of rural landscapes and man managed ecosystems including both urbanised and industrialised ones. The main techniques and taxa used for bioindication are considered in detail. Remediation and contamination is faced with diversity, abundance and dominance of biota, mostly invertebrates.
Invertebrate Biodiversity as Bioindicators of Sustainable Landscapes provides a basic tool for students and scientists involved in landscape ecology and planning, environmental sciences, landscape remediation and pollution.
