Book Description

Fishes of the Great Lakes Region is the ultimate guide to Great Lakes fishes---updated, enhanced, and with new color illustrations.

For everyday anglers, armchair enthusiasts, and serious students, Hubbs and Lagler's text remains the definitive work in the identification and study of the fishes of this important freshwater region.

Organized by fish family, with sections on waters of the Great Lakes region, zoogeography, field study and collection, preservation of fishes for study, fish identification, anatomy, terminology, and more, Fishes of the Great Lakes Region is comprehensive in its scope and breadth of information-truly the classic book on Great Lakes fishes.

The book also documents a half century of changes in fish population in the region that have resulted from pollution, development, and the introduction of nonnative species. This edition will thus inspire future generations of anglers and students to take a fresh look at one of our most important fauna.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great book for Great Lakes Fishes.......2006-03-14

This has for years been one of the great regional fish books of the United States. This revised edition with the addition of distribution maps, more illustrations showing important ID features, the photos placed within the pages of text and many more quality color illustrations have made this book much more user friendly. The rewritten text gives much more information than the original book contained. This book will be of great use to fisherman, those with a interest in the wildlife of this region and serious student of fishes. If you live in the Great Lakes area and are interested in fishes this book is a necessity.

5 out of 5 stars THE Authority for information on and identification of fishes in the Great Lakes Region........2006-02-14

This book is a must for anyone interested in fishes that live in the Great Lakes or the inland waters of the Great Lakes Region. It makes identification easy, and includes every possible species you might find, not just the more common fishes.

                    Book Description

The Tutorials in Biostatistics have become a very popular feature of the prestigious Wiley journal, Statistics in Medicine (SIM). The introductory style and practical focus make them accessible to a wide audience including medical practitioners with limited statistical knowledge.   This book represents the first of two volumes presenting the best tutorials published in SIM, focusing on statistical methods in clinical studies. Topics include the design and analysis of clinical trials, epidemiology, survival analysis, and data monitoring. Each tutorial is focused on a medical problem, has been fully peer-reviewed and edited, and is authored by leading researchers in biostatistics.   Many articles include an appendix on the latest developments since publication in the journal and additional references.

This will appeal to statisticians working in medical research, as well as statistically-minded clinicians, biologists, epidemiologists and geneticists. It will also appeal to graduate students of biostatistics.

                      Book Description

While the theory and application of finite elements methods can be extended to incompatible, hybrid, and mixed element methods, important issues, such as determining the reliability of the solution of incompatible multivariable elements, along with a common perception of impracticality, have hindered the widespread implementation of these methods. Today, however, recent advances--many directly attributable to these authors--have allowed the development of the stability theory and abstract mathematics to useful tools. Hybrid and Incompatible Finite Element Methods introduces these advances in the theory and applications of incompatible and multivariable finite element methods. After an overview of the variation formulation of finite element methods in solid mechanics, the authors discuss the fundamental theory and systematically demonstrate the theoretical foundations of incompatible elements and their application to different problems in the theory of elasticity. They also introduce new ideas in the development of hybrid finite elements, study the numerical stability of the hybrid and mixed element, and establish the theory of zero energy deformation modes. The final chapters, explore applications to fracture problems, present a bound analysis for fracture parameters, and demonstrate an implementation of a finite element analysis program.

Hybrid and Incompatible Finite Element Methods by Theodore H. H. Pian, Chang-Chun Wu (Modern Mechanics and Mathematics: Chapman & Hall/CRC) While the theory and application of finite element methods can be extended to incompatible, hybrid, and mixed element methods, important issues, such as determining the reliability of the solution of incompatible multivariable elements, along with a common perception of impracticality, have hindered the widespread implementation of these methods. Theodore H.H. Pian is Professor Emeritus of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
Chang-Chun Wu is a professor in the Department of Modern Mathematics, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China.
The purpose of this book is to introduce the advancement of the theory and applications of incompatible and multivariable finite element methods. The majority of the content of this book is the result of the authors' research.
The theory and application of finite element methods are not limited to ordinary compatible displacement methods. The incompatible element, hybrid element, and mixed element, developed since the early 1960s have been central topics for engineers and mathematicians. However, one important issue in this area is to determine the reliability for the solution of the incompatible multivarible elements (that is, the uniqueness, convergence, and adoptivity to the computing environment). For example, the convergence problem of incompatible elements was resolved in the early 1970s, but until now there have not been any available equations for determining functions for incompatible elements. Another example is that many engineers and mathematicians consider the uniqueness of multivariable (B-B condition) too abstract and not practical. Thus, it is a very important task to reduce the numerical stability theory and abstract mathematics to a tool in mechanics.
Chapter 1 is an introduction of the variational formulation of finite element methods in solid mechanics. Chapters 2 through 6 discuss fundamental theories, systematically demonstrating the theoretical foundations of incompatible elements and their application to different typical problems in the theory of elasticity and plasticity. These chapters also introduce new ideas in the development of hybrid finite elements, and studies the numerical stability of the hybrid and mixed elements, establishing the theory of zero-energy deformation mode. Chapter 7 addresses the application to fracture problems, where a bound analysis for fracture parameters is presented. An implementation of a finite element analysis program is provided in Chapter 8.
Chapter 9 presents the application to the computational materials such as composite plates, piezoelectric materials, and bimaterial interface problems. The homoginization approach is also presented. In Chapter 10, a finite element program is completely presented, in which a series of advanced imcompatible elements and the hybrid ones are included.

                      Book Description

Exploring the realities of public piety and private philandering, Homewrecker combines fiction, nonfiction, and poetry to present a multitude of perspectives on adultery and the emotional complexity that affairs entail. Acclaimed contemporary writers share space with fresh talent in its pages, each with a different take on adultery and its aftermath. In "The Other Man," Stephen Elliot remembers the dominatrix who two-timed him with a square. Lori Selke spins steamy erotica in "Sex and the Married Dyke," a story about how quickly queer marriage can degenerate into extramarital queer activity. Neal Pollack's "Confessions of a Dial-up Gigolo" recalls the early days of the Internet when anything seemed possible, even destroying the marriage of someone you've never met.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening and engaging the reader's total attention with its many peculiar real life stories.......2006-04-10

Homewrecker: An Adultery Reader, deftly edited by San Francisco-based poet Daphne Gottlieb is a thoughtful and thought-provoking collection drawn from many writers contributing their personal experiences and stories of their own life's odd encounters with marriage, cheating, God, erotica, and essentially the interpretation of lovers without villains, victims or innocent bystanders. Enlightening and engaging the reader's total attention with its many peculiar real life stories, Homewrecker ultimately guides the reader through the hardships and relentless engagements of the unfaithful, unfazeable, and all-seeing mentality of the cheater. An insightful body of observations on human sexuality, Homewrecker: An Adultery Reader is very strongly recommended as reference or understanding to those in relationships which cannot end, and require some sort of relief or alternative engagement.

Gottlieb's new anthology challenges our society's perception of adultery by gathering poems, short stories, and experimental literature that looks deeper into adultery.

How best to prepare for a trip to Korea? Forget the kimchi experiments and immerse yourself in a novel that's thick with the people, the history, and the feel of Korea. Mira Stout's protagonist is Anna (based loosely on Stout herself), a young artist who lives in New York and feels lost. Knowing little about her Boston Irish father and her Korean mother, and less still about Korea, she decides to journey to Korea, as Mira Stout herself did, to try to make sense of the random jigsaw pieces of her background--tidbits like the story of her great-grandfather, once the ruler of Kangwon Province, who was stripped of land and title by the invading Japanese and ordered a temple be built atop the highest mountain amidst 1,000 chestnut trees. In the novel, Anna's Korean curiosity begins as a teenager, when Uncle Hong-do arrives from Korea to visit Anna's mother, the sister he never met. Years later, Anna turns to Korea as an answer to her feelings of existential angst, retracing her mother's steps in an effort "to see my family undie." Told in her voice as well as her mother's and grandfather's, what you get is a stirring novel that combines Korea's epic history with a family legacy and a personal exploration. A fine read whether you're going to Korea or lounging in your living room, Stout's story is engrossing and educational.

                      Book Description

Uncle Hong-do arrives in Vermont from Korea to see the sister he has never met, a concert violinist long settled in the West. His colorful visit turns his teenage niece's world upside down, disrupting Anna's cozy existence with his eccentric

customs, forcing into it a fresh and intriguing tang of Korea. Then, too soon, he returns to Seoul. Years later, Anna, now an artist in Manhattan, finds herself in a state of Bohemian malaise--unhappy, aimless, uninspired, and mired in routine. She seeks to fill the void with an expedition to Korea, retracing her mother's journey in an effort to see my family undie. Her departure stirs up vivid, shocking memories for her mother, of her gilded childhood, and of her noble clan's fall from power. Long ago, her grandfather commanded his own private armies and owned vast estates across the country from north to south. In defiance of centuries of barbarous invasions--by the Japanese, Manchus, and finally the Communists--he built a temple high in the mountains and planted one thousand chestnut trees to shield it from view. Generations later, his trees call back his great-granddaughter Anna, who sets out with Uncle Hong-do to find the hidden temple and excavate from history the remains of her family's legacy. Mira Stout's debut novel has the sweep of a generational saga and the historical weight of grand epic. It is her great achievement to have captured the turbulent and largely unknown

century of Korean history with such elegance and assurance, all the while keeping the threads of this family tapestry firmly in hand.

The premise for this book was promising - but the substance was a disappointment to me. I almost felt the book should have been twice as long - and would have preferred to have the personality of the characters developed further. It just seemed to go too fast. I thoroughly enjoyed the historical aspects - in fact I learned alot I didn't know about the Korean War, etc. I don't doubt the fictional story is based in interesting historical fact - but great periods of time seemed to have been left out. For instance - it referred at one point to the younger son having been put in a sanitarium but the details of this interesting occurance was left out of the story. It was just an OK story.

_One Thousand Chestnut Trees_, is a wonderful book from an author conveying a very special point of view -- and I thoroughly enjoyed reading Mira Stout's novel. I'm grateful to Stout for writing the book -- and pleased that she found a publisher.

I am an Amerasian of Korean-German descent. My mother came to this country as a foreign-exchange student after the Korean War, and later, married an American. I find this book so phenomenal because of a greater context. It wasn't that long ago that 17 states banned marriages between Koreans and so-called "Americans." And if American racial prejudices weren't enough, so-called "half-breed" Korean-American children have also faced unspeakable discrimination from many Korean communities. That Mira Stout has risen above this type of background rhetoric to present her story is a testament to something quite special in her character. She lovingly represents the Korean side of her family through this novel. And while she does share the "dark sides" of her family, countries, and cultures that she must bridge, she doesn't succomb to a tiresome tirade of old accusations. Rather, she presents these people in a far more sophisticated way -- showing their struggles, misunderstandings, and achievements. Stout shares a personal journey with all of its heartache and humor. We have many good texts regarding Korean history in the 20th century -- but we have far fewer books that give historical statistics names and faces and feelings.

As an Amerasian in the United States, my Korean heritage has been difficult to access. There are many reasons for this -- both benign and malicious. Benign in the sense that America is overwhelming European-American by habit; malicious in that racial prejudice still closes many doors on both sides of the Pacific. But Stout has been willing to risk writing a book that opens doors to my Korean heritage -- to my parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles. Stout shares the thoughts that my family will never be able to tell me -- but notions which deserve articulation. I appreciate Stout giving voice to the voiceless. And in voicing, giving us an insight into people that are more than mono-syllables and horrible accents -- but rather, a sophisticated amalgam of love and hope without demagoguery.

I hope Stout writes another book soon.

                      4 out of 5 stars A heartfelt journey.......2003-02-15

Overall, an emotional, heartfelt and satisfying journey into the history of 20th Century Korea told through the life of Mira's grandparents and mother. The book reads like an autobiography at times and is ornate and detailed, sometimes distractingly so. There are other little faults here, such as she doesn't get all the historical facts straight, she mispronounces (quite badly at times) Korean words and there are slight grammatical errors. However, this book has so many other positives that it outweighs the aforementioned negatives. You can tell that she's genuinely made a connection with the Korean side to her, both culturally, emotionally and intellectually. But at the same token, she makes herself sound like an outsider looking into the Korean culture from a window outside. That is actually a plus sometimes because she can draw out the aspects of Koreaness that would be compelling to a Western audience. She tells her mother's story with empathy and spirit and she describes her own journey into discovering her Korean side with conviction and sincerity. In the begining of the story she seems to see her Koreaness (Mira is 1/2 Korean on her mother's side) as almost a liability and something to be minimized. As the story unfolds, she see's her Koreaness as an important and essential part of who she is. By the end of it, she discovers a whole new side to her, almost a spiritual rebirth of a Koreaness that cannot be explained, quantified or even fully understood, but it can only be experienced and enjoyed. Overall, it's a highly enjoying book, that will even jerk a few tears. Despite it's small flaws, I highly recommend it.

Reading Mira Stout's book, all the bits and pieces I had heard of my parents' and grandparents' lives in Korea came together, and I realized the magnitude of the difficulties they all had to overcome. Anna, the main character in the book, comes to better understand her mother by exploring the history of Korea--Japan's overbearing influence, the "yangban" class, World War II, and the division of North and South Korea. This book drew me closer to my own mother and heritage. I couldn't wait to tell my mother about the book and to ask her more about her own story...

Basil Duke was a former editor of the Southern Bivouac and helped spread pro-Confederate literature after the Civil War. His Reminiscences offer an inside loom at the various facets of the Confederacy. Buke looks at the truth and beliefs about CSA Generals such as Albert Sidney Johnson and Braxton Bragg. He talks about what the Confederate people thought during the war, and what has happened during Reconstruction.

The Civil War scholar should have a copy of this book to refer to; it is an accessible and easy to obtain primary source.

Bravery in the face of unimaginable terror prevented greater tragedy on September 11, 2001, when a group of passengers overpowered the hijackers of American Airlines Flight 93. Their heroism and sacrifice inspired us all. One of these passengers was Mark Bingham, a living-out-loud, gregarious, gay man. But who was Mark Bingham really? What was it about this man that caused his friends to unanimously say that he must have been one of the men who rushed the hijackers? The Advocate's senior news editor Jon Barrett interviewed those who knew him best, starting with the mother who instilled in him the belief that he could be anything, to the friends, lovers, business associates, and rugby teammates who complete the picture of a man determined to never take second place. This is his story, told to remind all Americans that heroism knows no sexuality.

Jon Barrett is the senior news editor for The Advocate magazine, and the author of the cover story on Mark Bingham in The Advocate upon which this book is based. He lives in Los Angeles.

4 out of 5 stars Poignant Look At An Ordinary American Who Became A Hero.......2005-09-12

In the aftermath of 9/11, several news articles mentioned that Mark Bingham was gay and a Republican. As a gay Republican myself, this naturally interested me. However, according to this biography, he was actually a Libertarian, though like most Libertarians he agreed with the GOP on many issues and on at least one occasion he worked for a Republican's campaign.

What's really striking about this biography is how very normal Mark Bingham was. He was nicer than a lot of people, and he did show a protective instinct all of his life; once he attacked a mugger to protect his friends from him. But aside from this, he was a fairly ordinary young man with career successes and failures behind him, working and having fun with his friends and wondering if he was doing the right thing with his life and if he was ever going to find a life partner.

It was also a little amusing that the biographer tried to gloss over one of the few qualities in Mark Bingham that would be likely to offend some: he was a "bear" and like some conventionally masculine gay men, effeminate gay men bothered him. Barrett mentions this as briefly as he can and then emphasizes the more tolerant comments Bingham made about effeminate gay men, trying to imply that Bingham knew his distaste for them was wrong and was striving to overcome it. Maybe that's true, but I could see that Barrett was concerned that this bit of personal taste might prejudice gay readers against him.

All in all, it's a good and balanced study of an ordinary man who became a hero because the opportunity sought him out. It's inspiring to know that such an ordinary man can be so heroic.

This book has been successfully written to tell the story like it should be told. Mark Bingham and the others on United Flight 93 have given new meaning to the term Hero!! This book is a wonderful addition to any collection of the events of 9/11!! Mark stood up in the face of terror and paid the ultimate sacrifice. It is because of him and the other heroes, that an even greater tragedy was avoided. This day could have been much worse if not for the courageous efforts of people like Mark Bingham!!!

4 out of 5 stars Moving for what it is, not how it's written.......2002-12-03

This short biography of Mark Bingham, who died on Flight 93 that terrible day of September 11, 2001, most likely as a member of a heroic group attempting to thwart the hijackers who had taken over his plane, is carefully written and researched by one of the senior editors of the Advocate. He's done the best job possible of presenting Mark Bingham as the human being he was, which includes the fact that he was a gay man. The parallels and differences drawn between Bingham and the gay man who saved Gerald Ford from possible assassination by Sara Jane Moore are very striking and food for thought. Most of the quotes are carefully chosen and only occasionally, as in a long string of e-mail correspondence between Bingham and a friend, is there a suspicion of padding.

Ultimately the impact of this book is muted solely by the fact that no words can adequately reproduce the impact of the attacks that changed America forever, and too many facts tend to obscure, rather than clarify, the subject and its attendant emotions. The short quote from Mark Bingham about his philosophy of life near the end of the book, as related by one of his friends, is more moving in context than anything else. If you know what I'm talking about, it's not necessary to read the rest; if you don't, it's worth buying the book just to read that.

5 out of 5 stars To Do What I Can With My Time on Earth.......2002-09-19

Reading this book was the most moving experience I have had in a long time. I really wish I had the honor of having known Mark Bingham, but now I find that I mourn his loss just as if I had. He, along with the others of Flight 93, should never be forgotten for their ultimate act of bravery. It will take me a long time to get this short account of such a rich and full life out of my mind, and it will never leave my heart. We must all promise ourselves never to forget Sept. 11 and stick together the way Mark did with those he loved. Rest in peace, Mark, and God bless all of you.

5 out of 5 stars My Friend, My Hero.......2002-09-17

What a wonderful book protraying Mark for who he was. I had the honor of knowing this fine man. It was wonderful to read about different things that happened in Mark's life and remembering him telling me about those times.

September 11, 2001, brought many heroes forth. I do not think people in our nation really knew what others would do for others and and what cost to themselves. Mark's selfless acts were a modest reflection of the many things he did for others.

His story is extremely well told and will give you more insight into the day will now think of as, Patriot Day. He was truly a patriot. His actions and those of all the people on board Flight 93 have given us hope since they fought the first battle against terrorism.

                        Book Description

Organized by the seasons of the year, Boundary Waters explores the 2.5 million-acre Boundary Waters Canoe Area that straddles the United States-Canada border near Lake Superior. Gruchow turns a naturalist's eye on a wilderness of wolves, moose, and loons as he visits national parks and other scenic spots. Drawing on the works of Thoreau and Wendell Berry, he explores the relationship of person to place.

5 out of 5 stars A mirror for the BWCWA.......1999-12-23

Whether you're an old voyager with a canoe paddle as worn as a river rock or someone who's just curious about the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, Gruchow's book will speak to you. The book is well-crafted, and each word must have been hand selected, but the stories still have the feel of a campfire yarn told softly over dying embers. Like the Boundary Waters, and nature itself, this book is at times profound, often educational, frequently beautiful, personally revealing, surprisingly hilarious, and always captivating. The Boundary Waters don't disappint, and neither does Gruchow.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful book about the advantages of a simple life.......1999-09-07

Boundary Waters: The Grace of the Wild is a true to life essay of being in a great wilderness area. I have recently been in the Boundary Waters. My experiences along with Gruchow's seem to coincide. This book is a must for any traveler to the Boundary Waters. For those that have not, it's a great way to leave the "rat race" of everyday life and discover an enchanting wilderness. Boundary Waters: The Grace of the Wild will help you to stop and discover what your true priorities really are. Gruchow will help you reach your full potential in every thing you do and find your personal meaning of life. Or for just an hour at a time. I recommend this book to whom ever can read! You will enjoy it. I know I did!
