Customer Reviews:
This is for the serious botanist.......2003-04-23
Contains excellent illustrations. The terminology and abbreviations may be confusing to some. Needs to be updated as some of the family nomenclature has been changed. I wouldn't recommend this for the average "what's this plant" person.
Flora of the Pacific Northwest.......2000-02-19
EXCELLENT first-book to reach for when needing proper scientific terminology. Does include some common names in the descriptions. Extremely detailed and uses extensive abbreviations. I used this book in Univ. of Idaho botany classes in the 1980's and still use it in my daily job now (year 2000). However, it does indeed need to be updated for current terminology and names, including lower-case spellings.
"The" Botany Key........1999-01-22
This botany key is used by University of Idaho's botany classes. It is still "the" book reached for by the professional in the work force. Afterall, what else is there that is so comprehensive? However, it is in need of revision due to changes in genus and specie names since its fifth printing of 1981.
Respected key for Pacific Northwest flora........1998-12-31
This key for PNW flora is the key used by Washington State University. Text is scientific in nature, and is not intended for pleasure reading. An excellent but complex key, it follows a standard dichotomous (two choices for each step) format. Although not intended for the layman, the text includes a good glossary and has helpful black and white illustrations. This book would not be a good introduction to dichotomous keying as it is designed for the serious botanist.

Not a good bet.......2000-01-27
This is NOT a particularly good/useful book.
I took the GRE Biology subject test in 12/1999. I used several different study aids, and scored in the top 97%. This book does not get any of the credit. The book is too simplistic and limited in scope--there is considerable material on the exam this book does not even address. It is not as wretched as some others; (to wit, The Best Test Preparation for the GRE Biology Subject Exam, by Ogden, which was so bad I don't think Amazon even sells it any more), but it is unlikely you will achieve a high score on the test if it's your sole source of study material.
I found the most useful study aids to be the slim test handbook put out by ETS itself (Amazon does sell it, at both a lower price and lower shipping cost than buying it direct from ETS. Go figure.), and the textbooks Biology by Campbell and Molecular Biology of the Cell by Alberts, et al.
Cracking the GRE Biology Subject Test by Deborah Guest was all right for a more simplistic review, but insufficent if you're gunning for really high scores.
This one just isn't worth the time or the money, when there are better options.

The Best of the Best of the Best.......2007-05-14
Lombardo's translations of Homer are brilliant, energetic, and fun to read. While other translations are as dry and dusty as ancient Greek itself, Lombardo remarkably manages to bring it all to life, and reading both the Iliad and the Odyssey are as interesting and exciting as reading the most fascinating and lurid novel you've ever had in your hands.
The best thing about this edition is that it has MAPS in the front, and NAME GLOSSARIES in the back (for both the Iliad and the Odyssey). This edition is abridged, but I found that only long, tedious descriptions of preparations for battles seemed to be missing.
This is the ideal student text. (If you are looking for the best FULL edition ever, Lombardo's entire translations of the Iliad and Odyssey are also available.
If I could give it six stars, I would.
The Iliad.......2005-07-04
I had to use this book for a school project. This version by Stanley lombardo is great, and the refreshed modern day speaking makes the book easier to get through. Furthermore, the character guides and reference to other books in the back proved to be very helpful!

Book Description
The further adventures of "Dr. Gonzo" as he defends the "cucarachas" -- the Chicanos of East Los Angeles.
Before his mysterious disappearance and probable death in 1971, Oscar Zeta Acosta was famous as a Robin Hood Chicano lawyer and notorious as the real-life model for Hunter S. Thompson's "Dr. Gonzo" a fat, pugnacious attorney with a gargantuan appetite for food, drugs, and life on the edge.
In this exhilarating sequel to The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, Acosta takes us behind the front lines of the militant Chicano movement of the late sixties and early seventies, a movement he served both in the courtroom and on the barricades. Here are the brazen games of "chicken" Acosta played against the Anglo legal establishment; battles fought with bombs as well as writs; and a reluctant hero who faces danger not only from the police but from the vatos locos he champions. What emerges is at once an important political document of a genuine popular uprising and a revealing, hilarious, and moving personal saga.

First Impressions.......2001-12-05
This is the most realistic book I have ever seen about Mexican American hippies in Aztlan, the Chicanos of the 1960's neo-freedom movements. It will surely become a collector's item worth saving in this era of gung-ho Americanism which does not know the kind of objectivity Acosta displays with regard to how we think and why we believe as we do. Hunter S. Thompson described the author better than I can in his introduction to the book, highlighting his uniqueness while lamenting his untimely passing. I will write more after I give the book a more thorough second reading.
Sex, Drugs, and Politics.......1999-06-17
I read this book after finding out that Oscar Zeta Acosta was the fat Samoan lawyer from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Acosta's style is similar, with a lot of drugs and sex with minors. The differences are that Acosta isn't tripping the whole time and he has time to incite political rallies. I love when they protest the Catholic church, or when he pleasures himself with some nubile young high schoolers under a blanket during a sit-in.... For those interested in the turbulent times that was the 60s, this is a must-read.
An awareness that should be taught to todays young Chicanos.......1999-04-12
After reading this book, and actually living through those turbulent times of the 60's and 70' s , it was refreshing to read and feel the burning frustration and love that this man was experiencing and the way he expressed his anger against the machine. This type of awareness has been lost , due to us the forefathers of the Chicano Movement, to teach our own and other's children of how important those actions were, so that we may emphasize education, political power and family values. We have implemented a course in Chicano Studies in schools, we now have political representation in our governments, and many more success stories that are due to the work of such people as Cesar Chavez, Ruben Salazar and Corky Gonzales. Oscar Zeta was a man amongst his own that was afraid of nothing and no one.My thanks to him for fighting the powers that be and for creating an example for all of us, regardless of race. You have to stand up for what you believe and Acosta is atrue testament to that.
Book Description
In one furious week of fighting in December 1943, the First Canadian Infantry Division took Ortona, Italy, from elite German paratroopers ordered to hold the medieval port at all costs. When the battle was over, the Canadians emerged victorious despite heavy losses. Over 2,500 Canadians died or were wounded there. Military historian Mark Zuehlke blends reminiscences of the Canadians, Germans, and Italians who were there together with a blow-by-blow account of the fighting to create a harrowing, ultimately hopeful rendering of one of World War II's defining moments.

My Dad Would Have Loved It.......2007-09-10
When I saw this in a bookstore in Toronto a few summers ago, one of my sons knew it would be the perfect birthday gift, as my dad [and, of course, his grandfather] fought with the Canadian Army throughout the battles of Sicily and Italy.
Dad was a sergeant with an anti-tank battery with the 1st Anti-Tank Regiment, and while he was reluctant to discuss the war in any detail, there were times - especially with a few beers under his belt - when he would open up. Even then, however, the horrific battles at the Moro River and Ortona were off usually limits.
Then, in the early days of his brief battle with Alzheimer's, he spoke of those days in the halting, limited vocabulary that is the bane of the disease's sufferers. And I remember him telling how his AT battery would be called in to blast away the top floors of some high buildings in the town and open up gaps in the rubble for the Shermans.
He also spoke of the spooky German withdrawal, saying one day they moved into position only to find them "all gone ... all gone."
How thrilling it was to see these events covered in Mr. Zuehlke's book. Thank you, sir, for the one of the best volumes on the Canadian effort in that theatre of the war. It takes a Canadian author to recognize and credit the actions of the Canadian Army without referring to them as "British forces."
Ortona Italy - Canada's Epic WW II Battle.......2007-07-15
I met Mark Zuehlke at my uncle's funeral (2006) in Victoria BC. My uncle was a WWII vet of the battle in Ortona. At the funeral, Mark presented his interview with my uncle that he used in this book. I was amazed at Mark's energy and passion. He truly wants to present and record Canada's contribution to the war effort through the eyes of those people who were there.
I had to have the book and read about this battle. The book descibes in detail each battle and extraordinary effort and bravery our soldiers gave. Several of the combat battles like fighting from house to house in Ortona, or the battle at the Gully would make good topics for movies.
This book made me feel proud to be a Canadian.
Great account of an interesting battle.......2007-05-12
This is really a great read. Zuehlke does a good job of focusing on small unit actions and tying them into an overall account. A great resource for wargamers also as most of the actions are desrcibed down to the platoon level.

A strange place and time in World War II Italy.......2004-01-17
Mark Zuehlke's "Ortona" is a detailed account of the 1st Canadian Divisions attempt to achieve what Montgomery called "A Colossal Crack" against the German 10th army defencive lines along the Adriatic.
History shows us it was a naive, almost impulsive and possibly vain attempt by Montgomery to achieve a breakthrough along the eastern coast of Italy allowing the 8th Army to spearhead an assault against Rome before winter weather shut down the allies armoured support.
That being said "Ortona" is

Fergal Keane, an Irish journalist, formerly BBC correspondent in South Africa, was sent in 1994 to cover the war in Rwanda that had left one million Tutsis dead, most of them gruesomely hacked to death by their Hutu neighbors. The power of this account lies in Keane's profound emotional shock at barely imaginable cruelty, and in the personal testimony of the survivors he interviewed. Keane also searches for meaning. Like many familiar with Africa, he rejects the too easy explanation of "tribal hatred," with its assumption that the problem is intractable and internal. He emphasizes instead the economic and class disparities driving a political bloodlust, reminiscent perhaps of revolutionary France. Even though understanding such atrocity seems out of reach, Keane bears eloquent witness to evil.

One man's honest account.......2007-02-01
Since the Napoleonic Wars, history has been more and more comprised of not only the broad overview of events, but of the personal, individual accounts of what transpired. Adam Zamoyski's brilliant "Moscow 1812" illustrates convincingly how the same side of the same story can be told from two different perspectives (in the case at Borodino, the strategist on the redoubt vs the soldier in the trench). "Season of Blood" is a personal account of an outsider (a BBC reporter) who lives temporarily "in the trenches", if you will, with the players on the ground.
The story we get from Fergal Keane is noteworthy in its integrity. He doesn't sensationalize (he doesn't have to), he doesn't posture morally (except in the most obvious, outrageous cases, as in the alleged covert involvement of France in the genocide), and he doesn't grandstand about the importance of his own work or how history will judge him. He simply tells his story, no strings attached. For most educated people today, much less Western journalists, to tell such an emotionally charged story while maintaining such a strong sense of professional objectivity, is truly a minor miracle.
Keane's tale keeps the tradition alive amongst first-hand accounts of major world events. The newspapers and TV soundbytes do not, and cannot, convey the feeling of seeing mounds of corpses (up close and personal, not through a camera)...they cannot describe the fear of approaching an enemy checkpoint, of dealing with drunken, third-world soldiers, or of walking through a supposed U.N. refugee camp and experiencing the dawning realization of who really holds power in the camp (perhaps the creepiest part of the book, in my opinion).
If you're looking for a "blame" book, this is not it. Keane obviously blames, and holds much contempt, for the actual killers...the Hutu extremists who chop their "enemies" to pieces with machetes. But if you're looking for a sweeping condemnation of the inaction of the United States (while ignoring the inaction of every single other U.N. member), look elsewhere. There are plenty of "sources" out there in the blogosphere, most all of whom couldn't point out Rwanda on a map, who will confirm your prejudices.
Take Keane's story for what it is. An individual account, nothing more and nothing less, that we all nonetheless can learn from.
fails on many fronts.......2004-05-20
As one of the earlier books written on the tragic subject of the genocide Keane's book might seem acceptable. His depiction of the suffering and death is powerful and forceful and leaves little to the imagination. The book, in my opinion, is well-intentioned but ends up being narcissistic. It seems to be more about the author's story of himself. I found certain passages and comments to be indicative of white privilage, ethnocentrism, demeaning and condescending. As far as understanding the genocide I would suggest other books, especially Human Rights Watch's "Leave None to tell the Story". If you are interested in first person experiences I would recommend Gourevitch's "We Regret to inform you"...an excellent book and L General Romeo Dallaire's book "Shake Hands with the Devil"...an incredible book by an exceptional human being. There are many good books on the subject. If you are interested in Rwanda and plan to read more than one book I would suggest passing on Keane's book. I would go with Gourevitch for a similar but much more profound and humane approach.
Deeply Touching and Moving.......2004-04-17
I began developing an intense interest in the Rwandan genocide recently, after reading various feature articules and op-ed pieces in the press commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the tragedy. There were countless examinations of how the genocide came about, there were merciless condemnations on the International Community's inaction as well as numerous examinations of Rwanda 10 years after the crisis. This book is different from that in at its heart is doesn't seek to ask why, it isn't a strict cross-examination but because it is such a deeply personal account, it manages to transcend many of these editorials and truly bring home the scale and tragedy of the massacres.
Fergal Keane writes with a clarity and economy and an unerring eye for detail that is undoubtedly borne of his vast experience as an award winning journalist. He is not one to mince words, nor waste them and this book is a powerful and intense account as a result. But where this book really grabs hold is the way in which Keane confronts his own personal demons and reflects on how his time in Rwanda has left him deeply scarred. It is the deeply moving way in which we see him confront, internalize and eventually deal with the tragedy and its aftermath that sets this account apart.
This is a book that should be read by everyone. It is a testament to the tragedy of how hate can drive humanity to unspeakable barbarism. It will shock you, haunt you and move you immensely.
One of the most stunning books about Rwanda!.......2003-04-04
I couldn't put this book down, it was so engrossing and filled with the words only an eye-witness could write. The author's experience in Rwanda right before the genocide of more than a million people is both insightful and amazing. There is no better book on the subject! This is better than any novel horror story, this is real life; this is REALITY! The horrors that Africa has seen as a nation go beyond most American's comprehension and the Rwanda tragedy is no exception. A gripping tale emerges from the pages of this book and does not let you go. Open this book with caution - once read, the contents will refuse to leave your mind.
Excellent Journalism.......2003-02-21
It is truly a shame that the Western media did not provide greater coverage of the genocide and civil war that nearly destroyed Rwanda in the early 1990's. It seems that the ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia etc. completely eclipsed the African tragedy so well captured by Fergal Keane. I like to think that armed with more information, Western Powers would have intervened in order to halt the tribal savagery organized by both the Hutus and Tutsis. In reality, however, Western powers continue to see Africa as a backwards and barbarous continent, more fit for colonization than development.
Keane did a remarkable job of bringing the Rwandan tragedy to light. As a renowned BBC correspondent, Keane has witnessed reprehensible tragedies, disasters, and acts of inhumane conduct that most of us will never (hopefully) ever bear witness to. And although Keane has seen the worst of mankind, in a variety of instances, it seems that what he saw in Rwanda left lasting and troubling memories.
The book is relatively short, only 200 pages, but it certainly leaves its mark on the reader. The graphic descriptions are intense, but Keane's insight into not only the Rwandan situation, but into the minds of those who participated in the horror is startling as well. We certainly need more authors like Keane, who delve into the loathsomeness of man and bring forth the lessons that we all should heed.

a passionate plea for wilderness preservation of the ANWR.......2001-06-30
The book jacket states the book is a passionate and vivid account of her trips into the ANWR, and it certainly is that. Having been in many of the same places, and even flown with some of the same people, I can make an immediate connection with her book. This book is a first person account, not a naturalist documentation. Some of her trials and tribulations make for very interesting reading, and makes one glad sometimes that they did not have to trek in some of the places. Her account of some of her hiking in the rugged Romanzof mountains sent chills up my spine. A weakness perhaps is after almost each description, she states what is at risk by allowing drilling. Sometimes that gets in the way of the journey. However, the last section of the book outlines the history of the preservation attempts, and the very real dangers of oil development to such an unspoiled wilderness. This book is a personal account and not a detail as to the intricate inter-relationships among the flora and fauna, and it was not meant to be. I enjoyed the book for what it is, and that is a personal story. I wished she had described in a bit more detail her time in the arctic when the colors started to appear as fall approached. Having been along the Jago River in the 1002 lands at the height of the fall colors, it is something that cannot be imagined in advance. One can never believe such a landscape of apparent green can take on so many colors. A perfect companion book to this would be that of E. C. Pielou, A Naturalists Guide to the Arctic. With Pielou's book, one can gain a fuller understanding of the tricks of light in the arctic, and the interdependency of the animals with the plantlife. Oil company executives will not like this book. Most others will enjoy reading her accounts.
A Remarkable Journey into ANWR.......2001-03-06
I love Debbie Miller's book Midnight Wilderness about the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Her journal writings, with detailed land references, eloquently paint a portrait of this pristine area and how unique and beautiful this remote land is. I enjoyed reading about all the animals and birds that live and migrate there every year, and about the people who depend on this area. This book educates us on the oil development controversy and why it is vital we continue to fight in protecting this special land for now and future generations. This book is truly the ultimate reference book for the Arctic Refuge and I highly recommend it to all.
Superb Account of Wilderness Adventure.......2001-03-02
Debbie Miller draws from her journal and from her heart as she recounts her explorations of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the last great wilderness area left in the United States. Few people have actually stepped foot on this northeast corner of Alaska, but by reading the words of Miller, one can be transported to this rare and magical place. The book, written primarily during the 1980s and updated in the current edition, is informative and inspiring. She effectively intersperses relevant historical and scientific facts with her own personal observations and love for the region.
Awe-inspiring account of America's Far North.......2001-01-31
I have just read Midnight Wilderness and found it to be a compelling account of the mystery and majesty of America's Far North. The authors transports the reader to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge enabling our mind's eye to experience vicariously the splendor of its fauna and flora. As I put this book down, I see the awesome Porcupine Caribou herd thundering across the summertime coastal plain, semipalmated sandpipers, musk-oxen, Dall sheep, wolves, Pacific loons, Lapland longspurs, snowy owls, tundra swans, and arctic foxes. Now more clearly than ever before I see the connections between and among the Arctic's wild and pristine physical and living communities. And, I feel compelled as never before to add my voice to those of the many others who understand why this awe-inspiring wilderness that is unequalled anywhere else on earth should be protected and preserved for future generations.
An big disappointment!.......2000-12-23
I am planning a trip to the ANWR Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and I hoped to gain insight about the region from the experiences of another. I expected to read about the wonders of the ANWR. What I found was a book that was full of negative advertisements to save the ANWR. Debbie Miller definitely is passionate about the ANWR and her book is the story of her crusade to save it. When she does tell of her journeys throughout the ANWR her story becomes sidetracked by her save the ANWR chant. The book fell short of my expectations.
