It's better to travel to Mongolia in summer than in winter. In summer the temperatures can hit 115 degrees Fahrenheit, but that's easier to survive than the -40 of January. Both are preferable to spring, though, when, John Man writes in this vivid story of wilderness adventure, "brutal cold gives way to sand-blasting gales that can flay exposed skin and strip the paint from a car."

Man has seen these Mongolian weathers up close, wandering around this vast country in search of its peculiar wildlife--a menagerie that includes rare wild camels and horses, mountain sheep, wolves, desert bears, and the elusive snow leopard. With the fall of Communism in the early 1990s, Man writes, Mongolia's economy had collapsed. Mongolians had responded, as always in times of stress, by leaving their cities and returning to the countryside to live off the land. In the late 1990s, with the economy improving, Mongolians were going back to their offices and shops, but with a new determination to protect the backcountry from the excesses of development that had ravaged neighboring China and Russia. As a result, the Mongolian government had taken an unusual step: not only would it encourage preservation by creating huge national parks and wilderness preserves, but it would also declare the entire, vast nation a special biosphere reserve, attracting both ecotourism and funding from international wildlife organizations.

The plan worked. And, Man is happy to report, Mongolia's wildlife seems to be thriving in a time when wild nature is in decline around the world. Armchair travelers and conservationists alike will find his book to be inspiring reading. --Gregory McNamee

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Window to a surprising corner of the world.......2000-05-23

The author's somewhat standard travelogue visit to Mongolia is escalated to excellence through two key things: the detail he provides about a little-documented country, and the insight that bridges Western concepts of society and natural beauty with those of Mongolia.

It may help a great deal to be interested in Mongolia or Central Asia before you pick up this book, but if you have even the slightest interest in the area Man will draw you in completely. While at first you might consider reading the book to learn about Mongolia without going there, Man paints in this blank corner of most people'e world view so well that you wish for much more contact with the country and its people.

        Book Description

Australia is one of the few countries in the world generally associated with a single group of plants, namely - the eucalypts.

The genus Eucalyptus includes over 800 species and over 326 are described in this volume. In particular it is significant as it features the colorful eucalypts of Western Australia, which have been widely used for landscaping. The area covered includes the Great Victoria Desert, and extends across the Nullabor Plain, to most of South Australia and into areas of New South Wales which lie to the north and west of the River Darling.

Since the first edition of Volume 2 was published in 1990, many new species have been formally named. The numerous subsequent discoveries are included in the Appendix of the Volume. In addition, the layout of the book has been updated and reorganized to be consistent with the latest formal classification of the genus. Important features are emphasized in bolder type and color illustrations show the tree or mallee and its bark, buds and fruit. Botanical terms are explained and illustrated.

        ILLUSTRATIONS:
        Approx 1500 color plates

4 out of 5 stars Field Guide to Eucalypts Vol. 1 Southeastern Australia.......2002-02-20

        Have second edition updated 1999
Good key, discussion of bark catagories, leaf phases, & other distinguishing features.
        For each tree has:
Good photo of overall tree shape/form
        Good photo of bark characteristics
        Excellent photo of bud
some with bud and flower (maybe one out of 6-7 trees)
        Excellent photo of fruit
        Very few photos of leaves.
Would have liked to see juvenile and mature leaves.
Discussion of distribution gives clues to type of soil tree is adapted to.
Would have liked to seen some comment if trees adapt to cultivation or are invasive etc.
Overall, best Eucalyptus book I've seen to date.

                                Book Description

Natural Selection is the manuscript on which Darwin based his landmark volume, On the Origin of Species.

This edition, first published in 1975 and now available in paperback, presented, for the first time, the complete work; a formal and thorough presentation of Darwin's views on evolution. Compared with the Origin, the original long work on Natural Selection has more abundant examples and illustrations of Darwin's argument, plus an extensive citation of sources and references, which were totally absent from The Origin of Species. Professor Stauffer has edited Darwin's manuscript with meticulous care, without departing from Darwin's own words, to make the lengthy text as readable as possible, clarifying Darwin's source of citations and explaining the interrelationship of this work with other papers and published material.

                                    Book Description

This work treats quantitative aspects of the approximation of functions using positive linear operators. The theory of these operators has been an important area of research in the last few decades, particularly as it affects computer-aided geometric design. In this book, the crucial role of the second order moduli of continuity in the study of such operators is emphasized. New and efficient methods, applicable to general operators and to diverse concrete moduli, are presented. The advantages of these methods consist in obtaining improved and even optimal estimates, as well as in broadening the applicability of the results.

                                    *Additional Topics and Features:

                                    * Examination of the multivariate approximation case

                                    * Special focus on the Bernstein operators, including applications, and on two new classes of Bernstein-type operators

                                    * Many general estimates, leaving room for future applications (e.g. the B-spline case)

                                    * Extensions to approximation operators acting on spaces of vector functions

                                    * Historical perspective in the form of previous significant results

This monograph will be of interest to those working in the field of approximation or functional analysis. Requiring only familiarity with the basics of approximation theory, the book may serve as a good supplementary text for courses in approximation theory, or as a reference text on the subject.

Five wonderful stories by the Japanese master. Winner of every major Japanese literary prize, his work translated around the globe, Shusaku Endo (1923-1996) is a great and unique figure in the literature of the twentient century. "Irrevocably enmeshed in Japanese culture, he is by virtue of his religion [Endo was Roman Catholic] irrevocably alienated from it" (Geoffrey O'Brian, Village Voice). It is this aspect that has made Endo so particularly intriguing to his readership at home and abroad. Now gathered in a New Directions Bibelot edition are five of Endo's supreme short stories exemplifying his style and his interests, presenting, as it were, Endo in a nutshell. "Unzen," the opening story, touches on the subject of Silence Endo's most famous novel -- that is the torture and martyrdom of Christians in seventeenth-century Japan. Next comes "A Fifty-year-old Man" in which Mr. Chiba takes up ballroom dancing and faces the imminent death of his brother and his dog Whitey. In "MJapanese in Warsaw" a business man has a strange encounter; in "The Box," an old photo album and a few postcards have a tale to reveal. Finally included is "The Case of Isobe," the opening chapter of Endo's novel Deep River in which Isobe, a member of a tour group, hopes to find in India the reincarnation of the wife he took so much for granted.

Mr. Endo is a rarity: a Japanese Catholic novelist, a literary Sadao Watanabe. His Catholicism and literary studies in Europe have made him the most accessible of Japanese novelists to the western reader. Those who know and appreciate his work will welcome these five short stories, and will recognize his usual style and typical concerns. A novelist retraces the steps of the Christian martyrs of Shimabara, but he is more interested in and identified with the apostate who agonizes spiritually because he did not have the faith to suffer physically. Japanese tourists on the make and their impassive guide wander Warsaw and find in the strangest of places St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish missionary to Japan who died in Auschwitz. A box of old postcards uncovers the secret life of a missionary's daughter during wartime Japan. A fifty-year old man takes dancing lessons amid intimations of mortality. A man who could not share his feelings with his wife watches her die and then wonders about her possible reincarnation. The last of these short stories is in fact the opening chapter of the novel "Deep River," but it becomes more intriguing on its own. Those who don't know Endo yet will find this a tasty and representative sampling of his work. Van C. Gessel, who has translated at least six Endo novels, has provided a very readable text.

If ever there were an author who could wedge a knife into the cracks of the human soul, it must be Shusaku Endo.

In these five stories -- Unzen, A Fifty-Year-Old Man, Japanese In Warsaw, The Box, and The Case of Isobe -- Endo draws back the curtain on a group of people obsessed with such themes as cowardice, sex, martyrdom, death and the love of animals.

With bleak eloquence and hard-edged compassion, Endo creates a banquet of irony and emotion that succeeds in filling the void created by 95% of modern fiction.

If you are weary of the predictable and formulaic fiction churned out by the big publishing houses, I recommend this slim volume. Shusaku Endo's stories feel like a gust of cold, clean and pungent mountain air from the top of Japan's highest mountains.

One of the most beguiling and captivating figures of the twentieth century, Zora Neale Hurston gained fame as a bestselling author, anthropologist, journalist, and playwright. Her remarkable life is presented as never before in SPEAK, SO YOU CAN SPEAK AGAIN. An interactive package tracing Hurston’s journey from Eatonville, Florida, to her student days at Barnard College, to her emergence as a literary star and bestselling author and cultural icon during the Harlem Renaissance and her subsequent decline into obscurity, it contains beautifully crafted facsimiles of historic papers, handwritten notes, photographs, and much more.

Readers will be able to hold in their hands the charred draft notes for the novel, Seraph on the Suwannee; open a Christmas card Hurston created for her friends; and read letters illuminating her relationships with intimate friends and fellow writers like Langston Hughes and Dorothy West. SPEAK, SO YOU CAN SPEAK AGAIN also provides the extraordinary opportunity to hear Hurston’s own voice talking about her life as a writer on several radio interviews, and, in a powerful interlude, singing a passionate rendition of a railroad worker’s chant she learned while collecting folklore in the Deep South.

Interest in Hurston continues to soar. Her most famous book, Their Eyes Are Watching God, is now in development at Oprah Winfrey’s production company, Harpo, and is also being adapted for Broadway. The sales of her books attest to an ever-growing audience. Whether they are discovering Hurston for the first time or are devoted fans, readers will find hours of entertainment in SPEAK, SO YOU CAN SPEAK AGAIN.

Lucy Anne Hurston, the neice of Zora Neale Hurston, in a collaborative effort with the Estate of the great writer, has produced a beautiful tribute to her aunt and also a collector's item for fans of Zora Neale Hurston. Not only does it include biographical sketches of the famous author, but also live interviews, as well as a CD of folk songs sung by Hurston.

The pages of this book are rich in heritage, painting a kaleidoscope of her life. Touching on her childhood, her days attending Howard University, and of course her writing, the reader is able to see that even though Zora Neale Hurston wrote about memorable characters, she too could have been one of the characters she wrote about. Because of the replications of original letters, maps, photos and writings, the reader is given a more detailed account of her life, told by someone who knew and loved her. Each of these are in pull-out sleeves and envelopes, easily removed from the book to allow closer inspection upon, or displayed vividly on the full color and black and white pages of the book.

SPEAK, SO YOU CAN SPEAK AGAIN is a fascinating keepsake of a writer who means so much to not only the Harlem Renaissance and to African-American readers and writers, but also to literature as we know it. Through this collection, readers are offered an intimate portrait of a literary legend.

In 2003, fans and scholars of Zora Neale Hurston's work were given the invaluable opportunity to rediscover this writer's life and authorial genius through a much-awaited collection of her letters. This year, that same audience is treated to another book of admittedly different purpose and scope. Comprising only 39 pages of text, Lucy Anne Hurston's SPEAK, SO YOU CAN SPEAK AGAIN offers a concise and compassionate portrait of Zora Neale Hurston as a gifted writer, a dedicated anthropologist, an impetuous lover, a reticent maid and, perhaps most of all, a fierce and uncompromising individual. Therefore, this book provides the novice with a clear and accessible digest of Hurston that will then, ideally, enable one to conduct further, more in-depth investigation.

But what really distinguishes SPEAK, SO YOU CAN SPEAK AGAIN from a run-of-the-mill digest are its many valuable reproductions of photographs, contemporary reviews, and handwritten manuscripts. All of these cherished documents are either laid out clearly on every over-sized page, or are folded carefully into a sewn envelope attached to the page. Whether one examines a duplication of the author's handwritten chapter "Love" from DUST TRACKS ON A ROAD, or studies the hand-penned poem of the same title, or thrills to see "John Redding Goes to Sea" as it looked in the May 1921 issue of The Stylus magazine, SPEAK, SO YOU CAN SPEAK AGAIN provides all readers of all levels with a fascinating glimpse of the material evidence of a by-gone era.

If, as an armchair historian of Hurston's life and work, I discovered little in the text that I didn't already know and occasionally (as in the case of Zora's artist-patron relationship with Charlotte Osgood Mason), noted a need for development, I was nonetheless graced with so many precious artifacts from the Hurston estate. There is even a CD attached to the inside cover where one can hear the author being interviewed, reading from various excerpts of her work and performing her legendary "crow dance."

In its dimensions and design, then, Lucy Hurston's literary biography of her Aunt Zora is as much a scrapbook/photo album as it is a sympathetic summary of one of America's most cherished writers.

A nice picture book that has a lot of information contained in its 154 pages. Time examines the longest day by going into detail about what happened in the 24 hours that saved the world. This book also examines different aspects of the battle itself such as the engineering, medical, journalist parts. For many, the battle itself was the high point, but beyond that were the planning and engineering that made the victory possible. This book also points out the command system of the Allies and Nazis. The Allies had a command system where individual initiative resulted in local commanders changing orders when the need arose versus the Germans who had to seek the Fuhrer's approval for command changes. Book also had nice little biographies of those who contributed to the victory.
A nice read and picture book for those interested in World War II. There are many books on this famous day and battle, but this is one of the better ones.

A vigorous analysis of the cultural, social and psychological pathologies that laid the foundations necessary for the rise of Hitler. Should be read in conjunction with Bernard Lewis's "What Went Wrong" for two reasons:1) to forestall the accusation of orientalist condescension that will inevitably adhere to Lewis's analysis of the pathologies of Islamic civilization and 2) to realize where these pathologies can lead if we forgive them in the name of multi-culturalism. After all the PC Left of the 30's also talked about the justifiable grievances of Germany (until of course Germany invaded the Soviet Union). In my book "The Optimistic Jew" I discuss these pathologies and also warn against the possibility of similar pathologies developing within certain segments of Israeli society.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal comprehensive examination.......2004-09-09

I had to read Mosse's book for a graduate seminar on the Holocaust and found this to be absolutely fascinating. Not only does it show the progression of philosophies withing Germany from its roots in Romanticism to Volkish to what would ultimately become Nazi ideologies, but it presents the material in such a way that it becomes understandable exactly how this transition in thought could happen. Though the book is written as a scholarly history for scholars, it is fairly easy to understand, especially in the format in which it is presented. The first section focuses on the roots of Volkish thought and how they progressed from Romanticism in the late nineteenth century to Volkish in the early twentieth century which in turn lead to the Nazi ideals presented by Hitler to the German masses in the 1930s, a perversion of the Volkish. His second section examines how Volkish spread from small groups of idealists into the University system through literature and art, and through this infiltration of the Universities, as well as the German Youth Movement, expose its philosophies to a wider German audience than it had enjoyed before the first world war. The final section addresses Hitler's rise to power and the ways in which Hitler was able to manipulate Volkish and its intrinsic anti-Semitism to a radical degree to serve his purposes. Highly recommended for those interested in the Holocaust and/or Philosophy.

This is a comprehensive account of the ideological development of the Third Reich. I highly recommend anyone interested in the Nazi Germany to read this book. George L. Mosse has a writing style that I have encountered in few historians. He presents his idea's is simple, but profound manner. I can guarentee this book will get your brain juices flowing in a delightful way.

                                          5 out of 5 stars A stimulating political history.......1998-09-29

Mosse has challenged the set thoughts on the origins of the third reich (such as the Luther to Hitler theories and the idea that the people in Germany were merely subjected to propaganda, which ultimately shows the weakness of human beliefs). A must if one is studying Nazi germany or have an interest in twentieth century political theory.

                                                        Book Description

Located off the coast of Georgia, Cumberland Island was once the retreat of some of America's wealthiest families, most notably the family of Thomas Carnegie, brother of steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, and his wife Lucy. The death in 1962 of their last child, Florence Carnegie Perkins, ended the restrictions of a complex family trust arrangement and led to the division of their land among Carnegie descendants. These parties and the other landowners, both old and new, clashed over their conflicting interests in retaining land for personal use, selling to developers, or entrusting parcels to the National Park Service for public use. Today, more than three decades after its legal designation as the Cumberland Island National Seashore, the island is home to a magnificent array of natural resources, including a seventeen-mile beach and the largest surviving stand of maritime oak forest in the United States; more than half is currently designated a wilderness area and is a serene and beautiful public space. The story of how the park arrived at its current status, however, is as rugged and wild as the land itself.

In 'Cumberland Island National Seashore: A History of Conservation Conflict,' Lary M. Dilsaver uses the island as an example of the difficulty of converting privately owned lands into public space. The fate of the island has galvanized national environmental groups, the descendants of powerful families, historic preservation organizations, and African American heritage societies. The local populace wanted to enjoy the beaches and the fishing but also to attract as many visitors as possible from the nearby I-95.

First a history of the establishment, management, and conservation issues of the site, 'Cumberland Island National Seashore' also serves as a revealing look at the ongoing national battle between ecosystem preservation, historic conservation, and lingering private use in the park system. By focusing on the history of one national park, Dilsaver shows vividly the difficulties of preserving land and wildlife while providing recreational opportunities for the public.

The core of Dilsaver's story is interest-group lobbying and conflict, involving wealthy and powerful opponents, and the Park Service's sometimes fruitless attempts to run a middle course following agency tradition and a web of legal constraints. Engagingly written and supplemented with historical illustrations and maps, 'Cumberland Island National Seashore' offers a fascinating glimpse behind the process of establishing a national park area. It will interest scholars and students of historical geography, environmental history, and conservation and preservation, professionals in park and recreation management, and, perhaps above all, those who have come away from an enjoyable visit to the seashore and wondered about its complete, albeit rocky, history. Lary M. Dilsaver, Professor of Geography at the University of South Alabama, is the author or editor of several books about national parkland and natural history, including America's National Parks.
