I wish this was the 1st book I'd read when my husband left.......2006-01-19
My husband moved out 5 months ago, leaving behind his 5-year-old and 2-year-old daughters. Since then, I've looked at plenty of books on divorce (for kids and adults), but this is the one I've been looking for. I agree from personal experience that kids are not "resilient" and don't just automatically "bounce back" from serious loss, regardless of how they may look on the outside. I just bought 5 copies of it for my church, my daughters' 2 schools, my husband, and one to have on hand for friends. Thank goodness I finally found something that will really help me help my grieving children!

This book is a must for any teacher, guidence counselor or parent who wants to help a child work through the grief that they may be experiencing as the result of a family death, divorce or other transitional crisis. It is written in a helpful, supportive voice.

Typical Osprey, Informative, but somewhat Brief.......2001-05-01
Like many military modelling enthusiasts, I visit model shops from time to time to pick up new publications on the hobby. Among the topics covered by such books and manuals, the Tiger I tank is undoubtedly one of the most popular. This new monograph from Osprey is the latest reference about putting together a 1/35 scale model of the famous tank. The main merit of the book is clearly the full color photos included. There are good illustrations on 4 different Tiger models, and a Sturmtiger. Sketches of details are also put in (apparently inspired by the Japanese magazine Model Graphix). The cover and centerpiece is the 1995 Euromilitaire winner. However, one of those photos looks disturbingly different - until I realized later that the image is reversed. The Sturmtiger model, surprisingly, is based on a Verlinden kit (and neither Tamiya nor Italeri). I suppose that the model was put together some years back. A few museum photos of the real tank are included, much like the Japanese series Panzers at Saumur (by the same Model Graphix people). Having read through Tony Greenland's Panzer Modelling Masterclass (the definitely book on German tank modelling, and now re-issued by Osprey) recently, I am less impressed by this new manual, which among other things, looks a bit pricey.

Civil Rights Essential.......2007-04-23
I purchased this book for my American Religious Diversity class and found that it gives you a clear timeline of the Civil Rights Movement and how Martin viewed it as the American dream and how Malcolm viewed it as a nightmare. The book's chapters follow the Civil Rights Movement chronologically by date and discuss Martin's and Malcolm's personal lives, religious obligations, beliefs, priorities, and virtually every other aspect in enough detail to give you a clear picture of the time. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the Civil Rights Movement.

Dr. Cone really points out the differences between Dr King and Malcolm X like no one else. But more importantly he sees so many simalaities. For erxample Malcom X encouraged blacks to go to Christian churches and get involved in social isues. Further, Dr Cone points out that Malcolm X wanted to go to Law School!!.
Also it is interesting that Dr. King refused to debate their respective postions.
Every time I am in Harlem at Lennox Ave and 125th St. I reflect on Dr Cone's masterpiece.
Have all children and adults read this book.

Dr James Cone's MARTIN AND MALCOLM AND AMERICA: A DREAM OR A NIGHTMARE is one of the best books I've encountered.
Cone discusses the rhetorical strategies of Martin Luther King, Jr, and Malcolm X as they applied to their particular audiences: King to the South and Malcolm X to the North. Cone argues that Martin King's strategy of non-violent protest, while effective in the extremely segregated and anti-integrationist South, was not effective in the North (particularly in cities like Chicago and Detroit) because the discourse and policy of "integration" was already superficially accepted by Northeners. The "liberal" North found King's rhetoric to be more or less agreeable even as the structures of discrimination continued to subject black people to a brutal double-standard. Thus Malcolm X's policy of Black Nationalism (separatist rather than integrationist) that allowed for violence epitomized by the slogan "by any means necessary" was more successful in the North because it more effectively confronted personal and systematic racism. Long story short: two different rhetors with different rhetorics because of different situations, different audiences, with different immediate goals. Interestingly, near the close of both men's lives--Malcolm X killed in 1965 and Martin King in 1968--Malcolm began to sound a little more like Martin; and Martin began to speak even more forcefully, not unlike Malcolm had been known to do previously.
I had the great luxury of hearing Dr Cone present a lecture based on the book back in 1992. Twelve years later, my assesment of the book remains constant: Outstanding.
A Must Have!!!!.......2004-09-07
This book is one of the best books I've read concerning MLK Jr. and Malcolm X in a comparative manner. From beginning to end it is written in a fashion that keeps you intrigued. I won't provide a summary because that has already been done but the detail of these mens lives is remarkable. I definitely feel that you can not go wrong with purchasing this book because you will not be disappointed.

A much needed analysis.......2007-06-04
A thorough analysis of all aspects of the legacy and lives of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. The author attempts to dispel the notion that Martin was some saint who single-handedly achieved everything that was achieved in civil rights, and that Malcolm was a dangerous hate-mongering demagogue.
Taking a more even-handed approach, Cone explains how the two leaders were both great in their own way, how they complemented each other and how there were far more similarities between them than were presented by the media. Also the two were very convergent in their views late in their lives. This is an especially useful book for those who dismiss and disdain Malcolm X.
A great achievement, the only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is that Cone repeats himself quite a bit making the book a bit more bloated than it should have been.

Libby Custer takes us back to the late 1860's as we follow her husband, General George Armstrong Custer, and the Seventh Cavalry to Kansas and the Battle of the Washita River. In telling the story there is often reference to both the trumpet and the bugle. Their calls began each day with `Reveille' and ended each day with `Taps'. They called the solders to mess, to the stables, to `Boots and Saddles' or to mount, to march, to retreat. The `Guidon', or the flags that told the soldiers with cloth, color and shape what the bugle and trumpet told them with sound, preceded the regiment during a march to battle or guided the company to the night's camp. The Guidon was the first color flag that any mounted commander let fly in the field.
General Custer and his troopers marched for days on end through snow, mud and rain to wage war on Apache, Kiowa, Cheyenne, Comanche and Arapahoe Indian tribes. Mrs. Custer vividly describes camp life and introduces the reader to the brutal reality of fighting between the Indians and the `White Men'.
Digitally recreated from the original 1890 volume, complete with sixteen illustrations and musical scores that Custer's troopers used to sing to the various trumpet and bugle calls.

Columnist Paul Krugman has described Bush’s melding of political hardball and economic favoritism as “crony capitalism,” while Senator John McCain calls it war profiteering. George W. Dick Cheney’s ties to conglomerate Halliburton are the tip of the iceberg since at least thirty-two top officials in the Bush administration served as executives or paid consultants to top weapons contractors before joining the administration. In George W. Bush’s Washington, it has reached the point where you can’t tell the generals from the arms lobbyists without a scorecard. This book provides that scorecard, in a style designed to provoke action for change.

This book was solid, well-written, and probably worth the $9... Definitely the topic deserves all the attention it can get, and this book is a good introduction. I'm pretty burnt out right now on learning the finer points of BushCo's shenanigans or I would be more enthusiastic about the book.
But one of the other reviewers here did make me smile. Thanks, guy! Your lack of shame or a clue was a ray of sunshine in an otherwise cloudy day.

I was interested in starting a company to sell simple items to the average Iraqi, items they had been forced to live without but this book was no help. THis is NOT a business book but it is just a political narrative attacking corporations like Halliburton and Bechtel. A total sham of a read, nothing is reported here that cant be found in the latest issue of the Journal.
An Engaging Book.......2004-06-03
The author points out how Rumsfeld as Secretary of Defense in 1976, was a prime mover behind the CIA's infamous Team B. That panel forced acceptance of its "findings' that the Soviet Union was rapidly overtaking the United States in military power. The author notes that the Soviet archives reveal that even the supposedly too low original estimate of the CIA was vastly exaggerated. .Rumsfeld of course, played a key role in the late 90's arms industry funded movement to portray North Korea as able to quickly develop missles to hit the U.S. These frauds avoided addressing the issue of whether North Korea would really build up some missiles, then just haul off and launch them at the United States, knowing full well North Korea would be wiped off the planet in retaliation. Rumsfeld, he observes, played a role in opening the funnel of American arms and WMD materials to Saddam in his visits with Saddam in 1983-84.
He shows how Rumsfeld might have alerted Carlyle Group CEO Frank Carlucci about the planned cancellation of one of it's subsidiary's programs to build the Crusader artillery system. Several months before the cancellation, Carlyle suddenly put the subsidiary on the stock market so that it might draw in shareholders and took out a huge loan based on the inflation of the value of the subsidiary and distributed it to shareholders and execs. Carlyle is of course the group which George Bush Sr. advises and whose executive James Baker and his law firm are representing the Saudi royal family against the families of 9-11 victims.
Rumsfeld was on the board of the Swiss engineering firm ABB for years.. That firm made the contract to oversee the construction of North Korea's two light water nuclear reactors. North Korea of course is one of the reasons we have to spend 400 billion on defense according to people like Rumsfeld who of course advocates that the reactor deal shouldn't have been made. . Rumsfeld claimed ludicrously to know nothing about the deal. Of all the ABB board members, all but one, who insisted on anonymity refused to talk to a Fortune magazine reporter about Rumsfeld and this deal. Rumsfeld is obviously very feared, the author notes.
He discusses the deal that had the Pentagon be leased a hundred Boeing commercial aircraft to be transformed into aerial refueling tankers. And it seems from documents released by John McCain's office that Darleen Dryun, Airforce undersecretary, gave Boeing the details of its rival Airbus's bid for the project. Dryun then quit her Pentagon job to become a top official of Boeing's Missile Defense division. The author discusses the none-too subtle campaign contributions made to Senator Ted Stevens, Senate appropriations chair just before this deal was put through.
The author notes that Richard Perle, while head of the Defense policy board, used that position to try to lobby some rich Saudis into investing in his new security oriented firm, Trieme. Perle claimed that he wanted to talk about Iraq, but his interlocutor in the deal, Adnan Koshoggi of Iran-Contra fame, only mentioned in his message to the Saudis about investing in Trieme. Then Stephen Laboton of the New York Times revealed that Perle offered his services to the bankrupt telecom firm Global Crossing to influence the U.S. government to allow it to sell one of its firms to China, which is not allowed to receive U.S. high tech resources. Perle advertised himself in his affidavit to Global Crossing as someone with great insider connections because of his post. Perle insisted that this affidavit was a clerical error. He tried to use his influence to allow Loral to resume selling high tech satellite stuff to China. According to Hirsch none of Perle's fellow board members knew of the existence of Trieme and were quite upset about it.
Then there's the redoubtable Mr. Cheney and Halliburton. After going through the motions of competitive bidding under public pressure, the army corp of Engineers suddenly accelerated the schedule for work in Iraq's oil infrastructure so that Halliburton would be the best placed firm to do that under the schedule, it already being in Iraq as a result of a no bid contract to put out oil fires. Cheney receives hundreds of thousands in "deferred compensation" from the company. He denied any remaining "ties' with the firm but his spokesperson, accoding to the author, said that the deferred payment technically did not constitute a "tie."
The author notes one of the more blatantly questionable appointments in the present administration, former Lockheed Martin executive Everett Beckner being picked to oversee the Nevada Nuclear test site, which Lockheed partly runs. Many Bush officials sit on the board of groups like the Center for Security Policy run by Frank Gafney Jr. Gafney dosen't seem to think his intellectual integrity is compromised by his group being funded by the arms companies who stand to make huge profits with the policies he advocates. The author cites some statistics about the dramatic rise in CEO pay since 9-11. He points out that Lockheed Martin's annual income from government contracts is more than that for the top Federal program for the poor. The Leave No Child Behind Program is being underfunded by 10 billion.
About 800 million in taxpayer money was used to subsidize the merger of Lockheed and Martin Marietta, supposedly to encourage these two firms to consolidate, making them more efficient. This Clinton administration encouraged merging has left a few big firms in control of the arms market and with this oligopoly are in an even better position to easily get expensive contracts from the government. The merging-consolidation has also encouraged defense worker layoffs as this impresses shareholders that the firm is trying to become efficient.
When corruption and election meet.......2004-04-10
One of the oddest trends of the current "us-versus-them" division between George W. Bush supporters and his detractors is the complete inability to find some common ground on issues that should enrage both sides. Hartung's focus is on the Bush administration because as of the writing of this review that is the group in power. However, make no mistake Bush supporters, Hartung has no problem bringing down Democrats who indulge in unseemly relationships with corporations in the military business.
The problem, as Hartung points out, is that both parties get into bed with corporations by accepting huge donations for political races and return the favor via legislation changes, special considerations, and other questionable, if not downright unethical, methods. The intertwining of boardrooms, Washington appointments, lucrative contracts, and political campaign money forces taxpayers to cough up billions each year (and well into the future). Yet many of these global conglomerates pay a fraction of their fair share of taxes by establishing offshore tax shelters.
The coziness of Wall Street and the Pentagon leads to enormous opportunities for abuse such as no-bid contracts, a topic so recently in the news in the current war on Iraq. And guess who pays? Look in the mirror my friends.
While I'm not sure I'd recommend this book as the final word on the topic, I'd say it was a good starting place, particularly if you are interested in the current administrations octopus-like ties to global corporations. If you can put aside the labels "Democrat" and "Republican" for a while, you might get worked up a little about how your tax dollars are being abused on a daily basis and start lobbying your Congressional representatives about PACs and other questionable funding strategies.
War What is it Good For? Absolutely Something.......2004-02-14
Something alright! What it is worth is millions of dollars in profits for the Bush clan's friends and family members. This book is what the left and right should be talking about more, the real reasons for war, not the cover story of "weapons of mass destruction." Amazing to hear commentators, both left and right of the political spectrum, who will tell you everything wrong with Bush's claim about why we invaded Iraq, but will NEVER even mention the statistics covered so well in this great book on war profiteering. The media NEVER covers the reasons for war other than "national security" issues. If American's knew how much these companies and who they are that profit from such conflicts, this would be a much different country. Highly recommended book. Read it to your neighbor who thinks that this war was about 9/11 or protecting America.
Warmongers and their dirty money.......2004-02-13
The only person who could read this book and not come away disgusted at the people it depicts is either: a missile contractor or b: an idiot.
The people who profit from the misery of others (and in most cases, cause it to begin with) are hideous jackals that no decent society should tolerate. If you feel this book is "Bush Bashing" then you need to inhale deep of the air of reality- Bush and his henchmen are "bashed" because they are immoral, soulless ghouls who KILL PEOPLE FOR PROFIT.
Clear enough? Read the book.

The Earth's biological, chemical, and physical systems are increasingly shaped by the activities of one species-ours. In our decisions about everything from manufacturing technologies to restaurant menus, the health of the planet has become a product of human choice. Environmentalism, however, has largely failed to adapt to this new reality.
Reconstructing Earth offers seven essays that explore ways of developing a new, more sophisticated approach to the environment that replaces the fantasy of recovering pristine landscapes with a more grounded viewpoint that can foster a better relationship between humans and the planet. Braden Allenby, a lawyer with degrees in both engineering and environmental studies, explains the importance of technological choice, and how that factor is far more significant in shaping our environment (in ways both desirable and not) than environmental controls. Drawing on his varied background and experience in both academia and the corporate world, he describes the emerging field of "earth systems engineering and management," which offers an integrated approach to understanding and managing complex human/natural systems that can serve as a basis for crafting better, more lasting solutions to widespread environmental problems.
Reconstructing Earth not only critiques dysfunctional elements of current environmentalism but establishes a foundation for future environmental management and progress, one built on an understanding of technological evolution and the cultural systems that support modern technologies. Taken together, the essays offer an important means of developing an environmentalism that is robust and realistic enough to address the urgent realities of our planet.
