4 out of 5 stars A beautifully soft merger of science, religion & curiosity........1999-01-12

Raymo provides one more well written and often sought answer that bridges the gap between scientific paradigms, religious beliefs and basic human curiosity. The one talent that underlies all of human evolution's ebbs and flows is curiosity. Curiosity drove the first humans to ask the questions, Why? What? When? Where? and our own creative talents answered those questions with scientific explorations into the natural concrete world as well as with more ineffable, spiritual answers of Religion. However, some time ago, as Raymo explains, religion and science suffered a rift and that rift has grown wide . . . losing the recognition of their common beginning. Raymo moves between the vastness of the universe and the equally vast human need for "God" and ties them together again, promoting an appreciation for the big bang, evolution, creation, the unknown recesses and reaches of the world, and the undeniable miracles of life. A sit down, curl up by the fire, read aloud piece that eases all mundane frustrations!

5 out of 5 stars Hedgehogs and galaxies: gifts from Chet Raymo.......1998-09-05

Chet Raymo's Honey From Stone is a heart-warming collection of essays. It shares deep and thoughtful ideas with the generous grace of a dear friend. By using the monastic hours as the framework for his essays Raymo gently reminds us of the sacred nature of the universe. By discussing the this universe through the awesome display of its skies he reminds us of the dramatic grandeur we are part of. And he uses the rocky Dingle Peninsula of Ireland to tell us that this awesome splendor, this grandeur and these miracles are right here beneath our feet. In his search for God, Raymo finds it revealed in the stones, the skies and the hedgehogs that delight and inspire his musings. The amount of science that informs his delight is impressive. He teaches geology, astronomy, history, botany and zoology on these rambles as easily as lying on great stones, watching a brilliant meteor shower silently illuminate the skies.

5 out of 5 stars This is a beautifully written book.......1997-08-20

This book is a beautifully written exploration of the Irish coast, the mystery of the stars and the potential meeting of science and spirituality. After reading this book I always look at the night sky with a greater appreciation of the mystery and wonder of the starry night

5 out of 5 stars Chet Raymo's small book reconciles mysticism and science........1997-08-19

Chet Raymo's book beautifully reconciles the traditions of mysticism and science. In a form which follows the monastic hours, he uses the natural environment of the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland to discuss the wonder of the Universe. He makes it clear that the more we understand about how the Universe works, the more mysterious and wonderful it is. The prose is simple and clear. This is a graceful and heartening book. I highly recommend it

          Book Description

Nova Scotia is remote and exotic, yet close enough to be accessible if you cruise New England waters. With some 5,000 miles of pristine shoreline, thousands of offshore islands, and so many anchorages that no cruiser could possibly experience them all, Nova Scotia is one of North America's finest cruising grounds. Here at last is the only comprehensive cruising guide to the challenging waters of the beautiful, rugged Nova Scotia coast. Peter Loveridge has spent more than 20 years sailing and sketching this area in order to create this guide. In addition to his custom-made harbor sketches, you'll find everything else of interest to a cruising sailor, including: Ease-of-access ratings; Descriptions of harbors and towns; Recommendations of restaurants and things to do ashore; Facility listings; Detailed discussions of local weather and the less-than-forgiving tides and currents; Local customs... and Dr. Loveridge's wry observations of the daily scene.

            Book Description

In the first edition of Bioelectricity, Plonsey and Barr provided an introduction to electrophysiology following a quantitative approach. In this second edition they address new discoveries in the field of ion channels. The text is an introduction to electrophysiology utilizing a quantitative approach. It describes the principles of electrical fields, using basic principles from science and engineering while taking the biological applications into consideration. The book thus provides an introduction to the quantitative description of underlying electrophysiology with illustrative application to cardiac electrophysiology and functional electrical stimulation. The book can be used as a bridge to more advanced texts, particularly those that stress a quantitative approach.

                  Book Description

When this novel appeared in 1999, it became a publishing sensation in the author's native Norway, sitting at the top of the best-seller list for over a year. The twenty-five-year-old unnamed narrator of Naive, Super quits college in search of a raison d'etre. He begins to write lists. He becomes obsessed by time and whether it actually matters. He befriends a small boy who lives next door. He yearns to get to the bottom of life and how best to live it. Set partly in New York, this deceptively simple, highly enigmatic, deeply odd, and hysterically funny debut sets out to answer life's big questions.

5 out of 5 stars Humor, depth, and simplicity out of chaos.......2006-08-24

This gem was truly a thrill to read. Entertaining, funny, simple, and relevant. When I first read it I was about the same age as the hero. And boy could I ever relate! Erlend Loe has touched on universal themes here, and I think that the greatest value of this story lies in its ability to pinpoint simply and accurately the most fundamental questions of human existence and in turn cause you to think about them in a personal way. I don't see how anyone could read this book and walk away unchanged.

Erlend Loe's unique voice in "Naive. Super" is open and insightful on a level that reminds me of "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" by Dave Eggers. And that is a compliment to both authors.

(To clarify: The title's spelling of "naive" is an English form, not Norwegian, and only appears in the translation.)

5 out of 5 stars Perhaps my favorite book.......2006-07-14

This book is wonderful! Simply written and oddly profound, it leaves the reader with a sense of serenity and hope. I first read this during a time of high stress, and it restored my sense of balance and priority. I read it periodically.

3 out of 5 stars Nice Little Story.......2006-07-07

I read this book in a day although there wasn't much 'pull' in its plot. The characters are believable and interesting...the main character's relationship with the little kid next door is great - they are both on the same wavelength. I thought his idea for the premium-rate phone line was very funny as it was so scheming and two-faced. Overall, enjoyable enough.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond words !.......2006-01-06

Erlend Loes books are hard to describe. They must be read/experienced. A common denominator is easy to read - almost like a childs book, very entertaining, extremely funny and deeply profound. Simple and funny stories with layers of meaning. If you have ever tried to structure and organize your life, you may love this book. I think that you may also be interested in The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart - another brilliant book.

4 out of 5 stars Not Erlend Loe's best book, but a funny one.......2005-05-17

I remember reading this book by my name-brother and fellow Norwegian some years ago and I had a lot of laughs doing so. I found my self being 20-something and all of a sudden I was making lists of everything as well. I didn't start knocking with a toy-hammer though. :) My wife started reading the book and thought it was just weird.

Anyway...I feel sorry for all of you for not being able to read his funniest book "L". It's about the writer and his friends going to Rarotonga (an Island in Polynesia) to become great norwegian explorer like Roald Amundsen, Fridtjof Nansen and Thor Heyerdahl. I found myself crying of laughter when I read the book. What can I say other than "You are all missing out BIG TIME". I hope that "L" will be translated to English so that all of you could read it. It's by far the funniest book I have ever read.
By the way...the title of the book; "L" is for "Learing".

                  Book Description

The parallel lives of two compelling and competitive artists and their recurrent engagements with desire and mortality.

Matisse and Picasso achieved extraordinary prominence during their lifetimes. They have become cultural icons, standing not only for different kinds of art but also for different ways of living. Matisse, known for his restraint and intense sense of privacy, for his decorum and discretion, created an art that transcended daily life and conveyed a sensuality that inhabited an abstract and ethereal realm of being. In contrast, Picasso became the exemplar of intense emotionality, of theatricality, of art as a kind of autobiographical confession that was often charged with violence and explosive eroticism. In Matisse and Picasso, Jack Flam explores the compelling, competitive, parallel lives of these two artists and their very different attitudes toward the idea of artistic greatness, toward the women they loved, and ultimately toward their confrontations with death.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for Art lovers!!!.......2006-05-24

This is an excellent book. I am thoroughly enjoying it.
This book compares great painters 'Henri Matisse' and 'Pablo Picasso' works and the influence of each other and their works on the others art.
Henri Matisse with his keeping the painting simple and lively and Picasso with his cubism, drawing from imagination are 'artists of different worlds'. They have different painting styles and they paint at exactly opposite times.
The book goes through the works of each in the order one was done as a reacton to the other, sometimes one trying to beat the other at their own style.

                  CITES:
Baudelaire's essay- 'The Painter of Modern Life'.
Apollinaire's essay on Picasso's work.(also his 'La Poete assasine')
Picasso's play - 'Desire caught by the tail'.
Matisse - 'Notes of a Painter'.

5 out of 5 stars Lucid, Riviting Artist Stories.......2004-07-28

Imagine one tightly written book that can tell you what the art world was like for much of the 20th Century! Jack Flam is the man who did just that in "Matisse Picaso." Then imagine learning all about the lives of Matisse and Picasso and their loves along with their push-pull friendship and competition. After that get the skinny on the paintings both men painted. I never even saw all the -------- in Picasso's paintings. Now, it is hard to see anything else.

I found this book to be much more exciting then typical biographies that include all the boring parts of people's lives. Here you get all the interesting parts with all the boring parts left out. I read every word and recommend the book without reservation. In fact, I believe every art student needs to read this book, every artist, every art affictionado.

5 out of 5 stars Esthetic in braid.......2003-10-04

If this be gossip, then it is the best kind. Engaging account of the rivalry/synergy of Matisse and Picasso and the interactions over half a century, with a Gertrude Stein introit at the beginning. This competition is fairly lightweight stuff as far as I can see although throwing rubber suction darts at a Matisse painting gets close to borderline rascalian--Picasso probably loses points on adolescent misdemeanours, but the art of both leaves us unable to judge, save that a third here could not be found.

5 out of 5 stars Matisse and Picasso by Flam.......2003-09-26

This is an excellent work for art history enthusiasts. It depicts
many famous works of art by Matisse and Picasso. Classically,
Matisse is known for the artful use of color; whereas, Picasso
is credited with the unique form of Cubism which pervades
his artwork. Flam depicts important works by both artists.
For instance, Matisse's "The Woman With The Hat" is shown in
full color. Picasso's "The Acrobat's Family" is depicted
together with "The Two Nudes". These pictures show the emotional side of Picasso's work in contradistinction to
Matisse's exercise of restraint. This book would make a
perfect gift for a friend, relative or art buff.

                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent Juxtoposition.......2003-06-21

Before there was Andy Warhol, the ultimate in art cool, there was Picasso. And before there was Picasso, there was Matisse. Picasso and his cronies used to make fun of Matisse's primitive style and threw fake darts at Matisse's portrait of his daughter, and people laughed in the salons at Matisse's Joy of Life but no artist influenced Picasso more than Matisse, from his works to his introduction to African and Iberian art, Matisse was one of the few constants in Picasso's life, always keeping the paintings that he had of Matisse. These two heavyweights, more than anybody, have influenced the way we make art today. This books does a great job fleshing out the relationship between these two artists and how they affected each other in a well written and highly accesible format. An excellent book worthy of the excellent artists.

At the age of 27, Hungarian Leslie Aparvary was sold to the French Foreign Legion for 600 francs and began a two-year odyssey with what has been called the world's toughest army - where the value of a life is tantamount to zero. Much of his enlistment was spent fighting in Indochina (Vietnam). Leslie's journal is a gripping account of a Hungarian youth driven away by persecution and deprived of a home and country.

                  2 out of 5 stars BORING.......2006-03-22

This book really put me to sleep. I read it after reading Simon Murray's Legionnaire, there is no comparison. I reasoned becuase of the exoticism of the locale, southeast asia, and the intensity of the war this book would be even better. I was badly dissapointed.
Entire pages of dialogue between legionnaires consist of "You are ugly" wich elicits the response, "Well you're stupid" It may be accurate but it is not interesting reading.
I give it 2 stars becuase the author shows the shameless way the French government tricked eastern european refugees into joining the legion. The book also shows the southeast asian's bitter hatred for the french occupiers. Beautiful vietnamese girls who flirt with the author and his freinds one minute turn around and try to poison them the next. The author spends a good deal of the book recovering from this attempted poisoning or other tropical diseases which also makes it drag along.
If there is anything compelling about the book it is it's depiction of how the author is caught between an indifferent French government that sent him halfway around the world to maintain it's empire on the cheap and a malice-filled civilian population that at best wishes he and his comrades would just go away.
If you know anyone who is thinking of joining the legion have them read this book . It will change their mind.

                  Book Description

In recent years, private neighborhood associations ("community associations") have become an important part of local government. From 1980 to 2000, half the new housing in the United States was built in a development project governed by a neighborhood association. More than 50 million Americans now live in these associations. In Private Neighborhoods and the Transformation of Local Government, Robert Nelson reviews the history of neighborhood associations, explains the reasons for their recent explosive growth, and speculates on their future role in American society. The book examines the political and economic consequences of this basic change in the manner of American governance at the local level. Unlike many previous studies, Nelson takes on the whole a positive view. Neighborhood associations are providing controls over the neighborhood environment desired by the residents, providing high quality common services, and helping to promote a stronger sense of neighborhood community. Yet, significant operating problems are being experienced in many associations. Private Neighborhoods and the Transformation of Local Government proposes a set of new options for improving the future governance of neighborhood associations. This book provides the most comprehensive report to date on the rise of the neighborhood association as a significant new governing institution in American life.

This book is a treasure drove of data, history, recommendations, and positive speculation on the phenomena of Homeowners' Associations and their exciting and promising effect on our democracy. I would have given Nelson's work a 5.0 except for the fact that, as the Forward points out, the book is really several books in one. As a result I found it somewhat repetitious (OK - I got it on the effect of the Progressive Era on land use!) and not particularly an easy read - at least front to back. It just seems too chopped up from an organizational standpoint. (My opinion is probably jaded by the fact that just before reading Private Government I had whizzed through Evan McKenzie's 1994 work Privatopia, practically in one sitting - even though I disagreed wholeheartedly with most of McKenzie's negative take on Homeowner Associations.)

Readability not withstanding, as a very active member in my neighborhoods association - I just completed a three-year term as President - I heartily endorse Private Governments as a must have for anyone wishing to get a comprehensive view of what promises to be an ever-expanding feature of our democracy.

5 out of 5 stars The Emerging Future.......2005-12-29

I give this book the five-star rating because it opens up a subject that is little remarked yet may well be the way that will revolutionize our way of living in the future. Nelson reveals that perhaps 20% of Americans now live in private homeowner associations that constitute self-governing communities. Although we consider secession to have been put down forever in 1865, the fact is that many Americans are quietly withdrawing into their own self-governing comunities based on private property ownership -- a condition that the independence-resistant federal government still feels Constitution-bound to protect. There now are more than 250,000 such private associations, and thousands more on the way. If you want to get a sense for the ongoing revolution in the "American Way," this book is a fine primer.

2 out of 5 stars A few good points beneath a lengthy rant.......2006-05-16

Hands-On Environmentalism caricatures a villain that is a composite of stereotypes of ineffective bureaucrats and inflammatory activists. The book seems confused about what environmentalism is and doesn't devote due attention to the solutions it touts.
Clearly, a centralized bureaucracy that has little stake in success and limited local presence is a poor solution to most problems. Equally clearly, those who choose environmentalism as the fleeting vehicle for adolescent rebellion generally succeed in little more than rebelling. The authors dwell too long on this.
Haglund and Still suggest that many environmentalists don't care about solving problems and those who do care don't know how to. They also discuss several groups of people who identify problems related to natural resources and then go about solving them. People have been solving local environmental problems since before anyone coined the term "environmentalism". What should we call people committed to understanding the natural world and solving environmental problems, if not environmentalists?
The book includes a number of case studies, which are fairly well-researched. These vignettes summarize problems solved through community involvement, but are short on detail and (after a lengthy treatment at the beginning of the book) return to attacking government and activists.
Despite what the authors state, environmentalism based on problem-solving, resource management, and stakeholder involvement has been taught in universities for years. The authors of this book are not the only people who have ever read Aldo Leopold. I would stick with A Sand County Almanac, and pass on Hands-On Environmentalism.

5 out of 5 stars Our Environmental American Revolution .......2006-02-07

My hunch is this book will put off a lot of committed environmentalists and give a little too much comfort to those who don't really care about environmental issues very much. But, the folks in between those two polls will find the book encouraging; even inspiring. That probably amounts to about 80% of the people we know in the real world.

The authors' position that the government has been too "coercive" about environmental protection is a little too easy in the current political climate. Just think about this for a few moments. We're hearing the same kind of thing from the slickest politicians of our time.

I believe Theordore Roosevelt, our first environmentalist president, had a better idea. "The government is us. We are the government, you and I," he famously said. Let's work to make it so.

So, here's a more realistic starting point. It comes right out of this book! The authors concede in the early pages of the book that government regulation was necessary in the 60s and 70s. We needed a good push. Times have changed. Nowadays, they figure we can ease up. Loosen the rein. Let the civic partnerships assume more responsibility. Good point!

Maybe we've been living something of an environmental American Revolutionary War since the 60s and 70s. The war began back then. It's been a long hard fight. Today, we're beginning to write our environmental constitution. There's plenty of work to be done.

Everyone wants more freedom. That's a no-brainer. But, we also need an effective system checks and balances to protect our rights. For example, now we see that our citizens have a right to a clean environment.

After these checks and balance are put into place, we'll need to try them out. Amendments and new interpretations are likely. We've done this before. Mother Nature works like this, too.

One of these new interpretations is the idea that the power and responsiblity to protect our environment ought to be shared more widely. Civic partnerships, for example. That's where this book steps onto the stage. There are many many good stories in here about civic efforts that work and work very well.

The authors remind us in the last few pages that we still need to take more civic responsiblity and they are hopeful about our willingness to do so. Another good point!

5 out of 5 stars The Environmental Book of the Year.......2005-11-19

Hands on Environmentalism is the environmental book of the year. In time it may prove to be more than that. This book tells an important story and it tells it without the preaching from on high that too often is the hallmark of this field. Instead it tells the story that improving the envornment is not someone else's problem, not exclusively the role of the government, but gives real world and contextual examples of how our communities, our businesses, landowners, individuals and even government can act to improve environmental quality. This is a must read for professionals as well as people interested in the environment.

5 out of 5 stars An intriguing survey of volunteer efforts which are making a difference.......2005-11-08

The last few decades of environmental activity were important and needed - but over time these activities became dated and have needed revision. Any who want to reach the next level of environmental stewardship will find Hands-On Environmentalism key to building new strategies: the authors promote 'civil environmentalism' based on local issues, control, and economics, and provide examples from real-world success stories across the country. An intriguing survey of volunteer efforts which are making a difference.

                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Ideas.......2000-05-16

The "Hands on the World Environmental Series" provide excellent ideas for young people. The books are easy to read and the watercolors make beautiful additions to the text. These recycling adventures are a great part of closing the loop.

                    5 out of 5 stars It's a GREAT children's learning book.......2000-01-25

Reading this book was a great learning experience. I read a story about Johnny and his "recycling" adventure and in turn learned about recycling through the eyes of a child. Even as an adult there was an enormous amount of information, written in an easy to digest form. I highly recommend this book. We can all benefit from the knowledge this book gives.
