Book Description
This unique book explores how clients' problems are defined by personal and cultural narratives that can be identified and retold in therapy. The authors share their therapeutic vision through a series of stories, fictionalized discussions, and minidramas, inviting readers to participate in an ongoing conversation by reflecting on their own responses to the case material presented. Written in an engaging and personal style that brings the theory to life, the book challenges normative ideas about both narrative and the therapeutic relationship.
Book Description
This lavishly illustrated book retraces the meteoric career of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), the "little Corsican" who rose from the ashes of the ancien régime to become the most charismatic and powerful European leader since Alexander the Great. Accompanied by paintings, drawings, engravings, caricatures, sculpture, film stills, posters, and other examples of Napoleonic iconography, the text tells the story of the leader's life, his myth, and his enduring fame over two centuries.
An inspired master of propaganda, Bonaparte was acutely aware of his image at every stage of his progress, from the lean man of action painted by Gros in the 1790s through Ingres's Zeus-like sovereign of 1806, to the tragic, fallen hero apotheosized in stone by Rude. Later depictions of Napoleon cast him as Romantic hero and unsurpassed military strategist but also as Corsican despot and anti-Christ. In addition to work by artists ranging from the court painter David to Larry Rivers in our own time, the book presents clothing, jewels, furniture, porcelain, and silver from Malmaison and other Napoleonic residences, each a paradigm of Empire elegance. All ?nd a place in a book whose fascinating combination of history, biography, and the arts is sure to ?nd a wide audience.

A Sumptous, Beautifully Crafted Visual Guide to Naploen.......2004-10-02
"Napoleon: The Immortal Emperor" is a sumptuous exploration of the life and legacy of the French Emperor. This is not a conventional biography, of which there are many, but a thematic exploration of Napoleon through images with explanatory text. While I lost whatever boyhood infatuation I had with Napoleon and learned to view him in the context of the terrible costs inflicted on the French nation and their unfortunate opponents in his long wars of conquest, an epoch was named for him and the arts reflected the glory he achieved. Even the decorative arts were inspired by his conquest and "Empire Style" with echoes of the Near East he conquered was born. Napoleon lived at a time when France was the artistic capital of the world and artists like Jacques Louis David, Baron Gros and Anne-Louise Girodet immortalized him. After his death, in a nation that never again stood astride Europe in the same way, the cult of Bonaparte lived on. Later in the 19th Century, the great military artists of France - Ernst Messionier and Edouard Detaille - continued to paint Napoleon and his soldiers. When his grandson, Napoleon III was the French autocrat, the Empire style was revived and paintings of Napleon's days of glory were purchased for the state. Finally, in the 20th Century he became the subject for countless films and this legacy is given the same visual exploration in the volume. This vivid exploration of Napoleon - the man and the myth - is written by Gerald Gengembre who is a professor of French literature at the University of Caen in Normandy. He has assembled several hundred illustrations, each annotated with relevant detail so that he reveals each facet of the man and history's interpretation of him. This large book will be of interest not only to those with a fascination with Napoleon and his time, but to those with an interest in beautifully crafted paintings and French culture.
A good pictorial book, no more.......2004-07-19
For the diehard Napoleonic fan, this book is NOT the bible on Napoleonic lore. It is filled with good looking pictures (not great looking pictures) and is a nice companion to delve into on Napoleonic poetry, social mores, the legend and various films on Napoleon. Really, a potted history.
Vive L'Empereur!!!! Vive La France!!!!.......2004-04-27
Simply, THIS BOOK ROCKS!!!!......This is for ALL of us who dream of the Emperor reviewing the Old Guard, with Berthier, Davout, Lannes, etc. at his side....This is the perfect & ultimate illustrated companion for David Chandler's "Campaigns of Napoleon", which is the Bible on the Napoleonic Wars! ..The third section of the book which is devoted to the Emperor's Legend and Legacy is worth the price of the book alone, illustrations galore!!...There are two pages of photos, illustrations and text giving the lowdown on the topic of the Emperor's 'little hat'...He purchased over 160 hats from only one merchant in Paris!...So do not hesitate to purchase this wonder of a time machine!.....You will NOT regret it!.....

Book Description
“The last great folk tale of the last American frontier”—that’s how Jay Monaghan describes the crimson career of Tom Horn, defender of property rights, soldier of fortune, range detective, professional killer. Tom Horn, who had chased after Geronimo and ridden the trains as a Pinkerton operative, was drawn to wherever the action was—ultimately to Wyoming as a hired gun for the cattle barons. Finally he went too far—and paid at the end of a rope in 1903. For years afterward, whenever a man was found murdered on the high plains, people said, “Somebody tom-horned that fellow.”
Customer Reviews:
Excellant Reading.......2001-02-17
For those with an interest in Tom Horn this is a must read. The writer had first person contact with many of those closest to the story of Horn. He fills in a lot of the gaps left by books on Horn that were written in later years. The reader is left with forming his own conclusion as to whether Horn was justly hanged for the crime of which he was charged. It was well worth reading and I would highly recommend it to all.

This is a great resource for all those who love to learn and to teach. From the staff of Jews for Jesus to you.

Trickery.......2007-04-09
This book is by The folks of "Jews for Jesus", (a cult). If you want a book on Christianity go to that section, it's quite extensive. If you want a book on Judaisim for your kid, don't buy this book. If Amazon is wise it will take this missionary propaganda off of the Jewish book section - as it does not belong there.
Great Resource if you want to celebrate Biblical holidays.......2007-01-05
This is a wonderful book to help people who want to celebrate Biblical holidays. It helped my family to create all new traditions.

Helpful book.......2006-08-26
This is a good book that gives practical advice on how to start or modify a walking regimen during pregnancy. I think it would mostly be useful for beginners who don't know how to start, but it does have plans for moderate and competitive exercisers who want to make sure they are not overdoing it while maintaining a higher intensity. The book reminds me a bit of DK books, with their vibrant photographs. There are some sections on strength training and stretching, and the second half of the book discusses walking during the period after the baby is born, which the authors divide into four postmesters. Overall, a good book.

For the Navajo people, the new year begins in October, when summer meets winter. The Navajo Year, Walk Through Many Seasons follows the Navajo calendar, and provides poetic descriptions of the many sights, sounds, and activities associated with each month. In November, there are string games and stories; in April, planting of corn, beans, and squash; and in July, rodeos and monsoon rains. Follow Coyote through the year, and explore how the Navajos observe the rites and passages of each month.

Beautiful, full-color illustrations.......2007-09-07
Nancy Bo Flood, a teacher at Dine Navajo College, presents The Navajo Year, Walk Through Many Seasons, a children's picturebook chronicle of the year month-by-month on Navajo land. Each month has both its English and Navajo name presented, though The Navajo Year, Walk Through Many Seasons is not a bilingual book. Beautiful, full-color illustrations that reflect an abiding love of the natural land, created by Navajo Nation resident Bill Whitethorne, distinguish this charming month-by-month book.

Book Description
Beautifully presented in hardback, this one-year devotional is divided into 52 meditations. The book enables thoughtful but busy people to engage in serious but leisurely reflection on each week's theme. You are helped and encouraged to walk with God every day of each week, thanks to the meditations, Bible verses, poems and prayers.
The weeks of the year are divided into the four seasons, with a short introduction to each season's walks. The themes are clearly stated so as to enable you to dip into sections relevant to your situation. Many of the themes overlap to present the Christian life in it fullness rather than treat each theme as a compartmentalised entity in its own right. If we are followers of Jesus, then we will live for him and try to please him wherever we are and whatever we may be doing.

It was 1976 when Tiziano Terzani was warned by the fortuneteller in Hong Kong: "Beware! You run a grave risk of dying in 1993. You mustn't fly that year. Don't fly, not even once." Sixteen years later, Terzani had not forgotten. Despite living the life of a jet-hopping journalist, he decided that, after a lifetime of sensible decisions, he would confront the prophecy the Asian way, not by fighting it, but by submitting. He also resolved that on the way he would seek out the most eminent local oracle, fortuneteller, or sorcerer and look again into his future. So after a feast of red-ant egg omelet and a glass of fresh water, he brought the new year in on the back of an elephant. He even made it to his appointments: Cambodia, to cover the first democratic elections; Burma, for the opening of the first road to connect Thailand and China; and even Florence, to visit his mother, a trip that would take him 13,000 miles across Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Mongolia, and Siberia. In this way, that jet-hopping journalist rediscovered the art of travel, the intricate chains of chance which lead to discovery, and the mass of humanity he'd overlooked in his rush for newsworthy quotes. And he also saved his life.
Terzani's odyssey across Asia is full of revelations and reflections on the dramatic changes underway in Asia. Having spent two decades on the continent, he brings a deep love for the place to his journeys, but also the eyes of someone troubled by the changes he sees. Burma and Laos, finally open to outside contact, are now funnels for AIDS and drugs; Thailand has been traumatized by its rapid development; China is an anarchy fueled by money rather than ideology, where Mao has been transformed into the god of traffic. Surrounded by the loss of diversity wrought by modernism, Terzani asks if the "missionaries of materialism and economic progress" aren't destroying the continent in order to save it. Fortunately, there is a flip side to his occasionally dispiriting commentary, one that Terzani discovers in his hunt for fortunetellers. Through his side trips to seers who read the soles of his feet, the ashes of incense, and even the burned scapula of sheep, it becomes clear that the Orient of legends, myths, and magic still determines people's lives as much as the quest for money. By staying earthbound, Terzani lived to tell of an extraordinary journey through the ever-shifting kaleidoscope of Asia. --Lesley Reed
Book Description
“An utterly charming and engaging travel book that offers vivid portraits of unusual corners of Asia, told by a skilled raconteur whose eyes were open wide.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review
Warned by a Hong Kong fortune-teller not to risk flying for an entire year, Tiziano Terzani—a vastly experienced Asia correspondent—took what he called “the first step into an unknown world. . . . It turned out to be one of the most extraordinary years I have ever spent: I was marked for death, and instead I was reborn.”
Traveling by foot, boat, bus, car, and train, he visited Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Mongolia, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Geography expanded under his feet. He consulted soothsayers, sorcerers, and shamans and received much advice—some wise, some otherwise—about his future. With time to think, he learned to understand, respect, and fear for older ways of life and beliefs now threatened by the crasser forms of Western modernity. He rediscovered a place he had been reporting on for decades. And reinvigorated himself in the process.
Customer Reviews:
Captivating.......2007-09-12
I read this book travelling in China. I agree with many things the author writes about- especially how Asia is losing its "old world" charm due to a obsessive need to advance and that the change is mismanaged and distructive. I also agree that the Chinese are behind most of it. I too am a decendant of migrant Chinese workers now living in a developing country. The conflict between rapid development and preserving the past is one we constantly face.
However, I do feel that the author, eventhough he has been living in Asia for decades and is so well travelled, he is still given a perspective of an outsider or (gwai lou- white devil). The reaction of the locals are still greatly influenced by that.
Superb.......2007-08-08
Will someone please translate everything he has written into English? And it's unbelievable that there is nothing in Japanese by him. A wonderful writer who was genuinely interetsed in people.
Wonderful book.......2007-03-31
I cannot express in mere words what this book has done to me. I am about 2/3 through it and really do not want the journey to end. It's not so much the fortune telling but Tiziano's perspective of people and his sorrow over the loss of traditions that are being replaced by "modernization," or Westernization. And what a shame, as he states in the book, losing these ways is like removing a page or chapter from the book of human knowledge, gone forever. He shows through the many shamans he meets, the rulers, the "common" people (like you and me), how these traditions are "weathering" as the West collides into the East, and it's not faring well. Those he meets are still practicing the ways of the earth, they still know our place in this world, this life, and how we fit within it rather than reign superiority over it, but many are dying off and their descendents are taken by westernization and are not interested in carrying on these traditions. The west has lost its ability to perform magic if you will, instead we cure illnesses with drugs that make companies rich rather than through meditation, herbal remedies, spiritual manipulation, knowledge we all once knew. And here in Asia, and in Africa, through the native people of the Americas, Australia, etc. where our old ways are still being practiced, we still have something we could take and bring back if we'd just recognize its value, a real treasure we are so fortunate to still have and one we must grasp before it is too late!
One reviewer here mentioned how all of the fortune tellers the author met predicted that he would live a long life, often stating he'd live well into his eighties, but he died a few years ago at the age of 65 from a brain tumor.
This is not the first time I've heard fortune tellers predict long lives only to be proved wrong when their subjects die much younger. I had a friend who visited a fortune teller for his 25th birthday. She was extremely accurate about his past and present as well as what she believed would be his future, much of which he had planned but never told her. She told him he would have a very long career in politics. My friend was killed in a car accident while riding in a taxi only 2 months later. Another friend told me while stationed in Haiti many years ago that he had his fortune told with a few of his army buddies. The fortune teller told everyone's fortune but when she got to one of the men, she refused to tell his fortune. He was killed a week later.
I don't know, perhaps it's all bunk or perhaps there are folks who can truly see into the future. It's just that maybe they see the future, but not all of them want to tell the truth about when that person will die. Why tell someone they will die young when you can give them hope that they will die old?
Tiziano does not have a specific perspective, he's open minded, but he pines for the old ways that he sees were more human, and contrary to what others have written here, he never states he either supports or opposes communism, he simply observes, loves individuals and people, wishes for the days when we could all be connected to the earth again, and each other in a spiritual way, and not for business. And he's open to all possibilities when it comes to spirituality, true spirituality, not the kind that too often is used to control people. He does not dismiss these religions outright, he only notices they always seem to appear as either a way to westernize a country (Christianity) or fight against that westernization (Islam), like polar opposites, but no real balance or the recognition of a people's true will.
Whatever your perspective, open your mind and take a wonderful journey with this man. You'll long for a time you may know or remember, or have heard of but wish you could experience too, a time that even existed here in the US for a spell.
Had a good vicarious trip.......2007-01-18
A thoroughly enjoyable book. Frankly I had not heard about this author before, but I enjoy reading travelogues, and something in the title and the cover photo attracted me towards the book. Terzani takes us through the exotic countries of Indo-China and Far-east, and always he has the same goal wherever he visits - to meet a local fortune-teller. The author is very sympathetic to the fortune tellers, even if they are charlatans. Throughout the book, he is a bit critical towards the monopoly and the materialistic culture of the Chinese in all these countries. Perhaps it is as a result of having been expelled from that country in the past.
Travelogues read even better when an author intersperses the narrative with vignettes from his own life, but this is missing in this book. The author takes a very impersonal view of the matter, and does not reveal too much about himself.
Almost all of the fortune tellers the author meets predicted that he would live long and be healthy, but now we know the sad story - the author died of a tumour at the age of 68.
I can't wait to locate and read his other travelogue through the defunct Soviet Union.
--Raghavan
A great find!.......2007-01-17
What a story teller, and what a life this chap must have lived. I found his writing to be utterly entertaining and top notch. Terzani paints a wonderfully vivid picture of all the locales he visits, it makes you want to jump on the first plane to Asia to go and discover this amazing part of the planet.

Very Crazy, G.I.!: Strange but True Stories of the Vietnam War
ASIN: 080411871X
Release Date: 1999-03-29 |
Book Description
"Vietnam was a fantasy life of gunfire, blood,
heat, and superhuman toil."
By late 1969, the end of the war was just over the horizon. But for Ches Schneider, a drafted schoolteacher turned infantry grunt in the deadly Central Highlands, it was just beginning. This story of a Missouri boy, told with grit and honesty, describes the stark transition from the normalcy of schooldays to the life-and-death drama endured daily in Vietnam's bloody jungles.
As a soldier in the 1st Infantry Division, Schneider went out on twelve-man search-and-destroy combat missions, never knowing whether the next moment would bring an ambush, a firefight, or eternal oblivion. Later, when the Big Red One rotated back to the U.S., he was transferred to the 1st Cav and fought it out with the NVA in the steamy jungles of Phuoc Long Province near the Cambodian border. As an ordinary man in extraordinary times, Schneider realistically captures the pain, loss, sacrifice, and courage of the men who fought for their lives even as the war wound down . . . .
Customer Reviews:
Better Than Most........2005-07-05
This one is a keeper. It's written well and interesting and plausible. But Schneider needs a punch in the nose for his attitude about the Air Force. Schneider! Airmen by necessity are REMFs. You cannot repair, maintain, and arm aircraft in the boonies. It's all high-tech. The aircraft were for your benefit, not our's. All of us worked 12 hour days, and 6 day weeks. We also repaired a few tanks and other army vehicles, to help the grunts out. Our food tasted like @#$%& and our toilets were generally overflowing with the same. We stole C-Rations from the army because it was better than what we were fed. And we were mortared and attacked. So get-over it. But your book is pretty good otherwise.
A Vietnam story for Everyone!.......2000-10-25
Intrigued after hearing the author share some anecdotes recently, I read From Classrooms to Claymores. As a female reader, I never would have imagined picking up (let alone enjoying) a Vietnam-related story. I am not even a big fan of pop-culture war movies! However, being a teacher myself, it was interesting to get a glimpse into the persona of this fantastic storyteller and teacher. His sense of humor and realism hit home and make Vietnam not so much a glorified box office hit, but a story more young people should read. Thank you for your stories Mr. Schneider!

Enlightened By the Misunderstood War.......2000-08-05
I bought the book after attending a 2-day workshop that the author had put on to a few fellow teachers. He had mentioned his book and said that he was a Vietnam vet. Looking for some light summer reading, I was a bit intrigued to read about a confusing time in our country's history. After taking a few history courses over my years of "academia", this book quite simply spelled out a unique viewpoint of the war which I clearly understood, as well as, "felt." Mr. Schneider wrote the book with the "everyday Joe" in mind -- one day enjoying his MidWestern life as an everyday American citizen and then suddenly on the combat lines in Vietnam. He had had no previous experience with military. He was a school teacher; not quite the ideal tough field "grunt" that runs through the typical American mind when one envisions Vietnam. He does an outstanding job of even putting a "Glossary of Terms" in the back of the book to use for the readers to constantly refer to for some military and war terms used throughout the book. Mr. Schneider uses an excellent mix of reality, humor, and emotions in his book to keep the reader intrigued. What originally was intended for some light reading wound up being an excellent, heart-felt history lesson. Thank you, Mr. Schneider, for putting your story into a book so this confusing time in American history can better be understood.

Book Description
The proliferation of life-prolonging technology in recent years has made the controversy over the "right to die" and physician-assisted suicide one of the most explosive medical and ethical issues of our day. Dr. Jack Kevorkian's "suicide machine" has commanded front-page coverage for several years, while in 1994 Oregon passed a measure allowing the terminally ill to obtain lethal prescriptions for suicide, and other states have placed similar proposals on their ballots.
Arguing Euthanasia brings together for the first time an impressive array of viewpoints from both sides of this emotionally charged question as well as voices from the gravely ill and their loved ones. Beginning with a selection of pieces from the New England Journal of Medicine, where the debate was ignited in 1988, Arguing Euthanasia features essays by such outspoken advocates of active euthanasia as Timothy Quill and Sidney Hook, and important social critics and commentators such as Nat Hentoff, Leon R. Kass, and Ronald Dworkin.
As they probe the legal and ethical issues at the heart of physician-assisted suicide, these essays offer invaluable insights not only for those caring for the terminally ill but for anyone concerned with the deeper philosophical conflict between enduring life-oriented values and personal dignity that lies at the heart of this controversy.
Customer Reviews:
the hard issues.......2007-04-10
It goes without saying that this is an immensely difficult subject--one about which I have many conflicting thoughts--so it was very gratifying to have someone present the relevant issues in such a clear and balanced way. Thanks to Jonathan Moreno for this book.
Medical and Ethical Issue of Our Day.......2003-12-25
Very thorough. Covers the Dutch model, the history of events in Oregon, and, best of all, includes the viewpoints from the gravely ill and their loved ones.
This is probably the most comprehensive and balanced book on this subject that is available.
interesting, but I wish it delved deeper.......2001-01-16
This book gave lots and lots of arguments that were very nice and well thoughtout, but it often seemed that the point-counterpoint "arguing" was a little redundant. The whole book consisted of an article or an event that had to do with the ethics of euthanasia and two people with conflicting views would write why. I wish that the book had some documented dialog between the two opinions. It was a little boring reading the same opinions over and over again. "euthanasia as long as it is consentual and necessary should be permitted yada yada yada" "killing another innocent being should not be permitted at all because it is murder yada yada yada" Each and every writer was very elegant and well spoken, but I simply wish there was more dialog between the two people, not simply between book editors.

The Missing Book ... but Worth the Wait.......2005-11-03
I ordered this book 3 months ago on Amazon. The book didn't turn up so unfortunately I couldn't make a proper review. I wasn't too impressed with Amazon - after numerous emails unananswered the book finally turned up 3 months and 20 days since the date of ordering. What can i say? ... It was definitely worth the wait. A very readable account of a highly complex topic demonstrating just how important it is that we all take action! I especially liked the advice on pp143 ...
interesting, engaging, makes you want to know more.......2005-08-19
In this book, Chris Spence was able to present global warming as a real and compelling issue and to entice the reader to investigate deeper into the complexities of this subject. This is more than any technical essay on global warming could have achieved in terms of drawing the attention to such an important subject, often disregarded because too "technical".
Easy Read.......2005-08-17
Good book that gets to the heart of the issues surrounding global warming, and does so without pummeling the reader with environmental jargon.
