The book I recommend to anyone interested in family stories........2006-06-02
As president of the Association of Personal Historians (an international network of professionals who help others preserve their life stories and family history), I was often asked to recommend books for people interested either in preserving their own family history or in getting into the business of doing this for others. There are many books on this topic, but Vera Rosenbluth's excellent book was always my number one recommendation. It is well-written, easy to understand and filled with helpful information.
Still a classic.......2006-05-02
Numerous oral history guides have come out since Vera Rosenbluth wrote the first edition of, and then expanded (2nd edition, 1997) Keeping Family Stories Alive, but Rosenbluth's book still is tops for what it aspires to do. Her approach works for any caring person who seeks to preserve the treasury of family lore. She also outlines solid oral history technique and gives careful attention to sensitive issues, making this book an equally valuable resource for the professional personal historian. Speaking as a seasoned professional, this is the book I would aspire to write if Vera Rosenbluth hadn't already done it.
I found this book helpful.......2006-05-01
Before I read this book I had written my own life story, however I knew nothing about interviewing other people. The book gave explicit instructions about how to conduct an interview as well as many ideas about generating memories when interviewing older people. I found the last chapter very helpful as it contained many interview questions.
great resource.......2006-04-28
I am just starting a personal historian business and I found this book very helpful, particularly the how to of recording interviews and the list of questions that are suggested. I'd say it's very useful for families and professionals. Really worth it!

This book changed my life.......2006-04-24
Vera's easy to read style and engaging manner is hard to put down. I read it in one sitting and it propelled me to take the challenge of becoming a Personal Historian. I now love what I do everyday and owe it in part to Vera's book of inspiration.

It could be a good book, but there are many mistakes, mainly in colours names and camouflage schemes.

Book Description
"I was nineteen years old and now had three major campaigns under my belt. I had been wounded three different times, and, in seniority, was one of the oldest of the old men..."
In 1945 the paratroopers of the 101st Airborne came staggering out of the frozen killing fields of Bastogne. Tired, ragged, and hungry, the Screaming Eagles had proven their valor from D-day through horrendous battles in France, Holland, and Belgium. Now it was time for a lethal strike against the Nazis, and an all-out assault on Germany itself.
This powerful memoir chronicles the death throes of World War II in Europe as witnessed by a young soldier grown old before his time. From daring night raids behind enemy lines to river crossings and assaults on die-hard pockets of resistance, Burgett recounts acts of courage, cowardice, and anger in the face of a splintered but still dangerous enemy. Most of all, Beyond the Rhine is an unforgettable portrait of war’s aftermath. For as the Screaming Eagles fought on through sniper-infested towns, through the Black Forest in Bavaria to Hitler’s famous mountaintop retreat, they would come face-to-face with the unspeakable horrors the Nazis left behind...
Beyond the Rhine.

Excellent first hand account.......2007-01-30
Excellent book in a series of four written by Burgett. Seldom does an author who was as young as Burgett was during the war, write so vividly and clearly. I have enjoyed all four of his books and recommend them all highly.
The fall of a dictator.......2006-11-05
If you read the previous books in this series; don't miss the final book. We all know how the war ended in Europe, but this is the real story told by a real soldier in the trenches. It gives meaning to the prase "Freedom is not free"!
The war is drawing to a close.......2005-12-20
This is the fourth book in a set of 4 books by the author, the books start with his training as a paratrooper in WWII, and follow his time in the war until he gets discharged after the war. The books in chronological order are 1)Currahee! 2) The Road to Arnhem 3) Seven Roads to Hell 4) Beyond the Rhime. By all means, read every one of them.
For those who call WWII, the last "good war", this is a wake up. This war was just as full of horror and nightmare as any conflict, and the men treated as poorly. We get a view of the daily misery of the troops between the episodes of their bravery driven by the urge to kill or be killed. The author was a member of the newly formed Screaming Eagles 101st Airborne Division, and they made history and a reputation in this war.
The newly formed division gets the supreme test as paratoopers. Paratroops or Airbonre units are dropped behind enemy lines to shock the enemy, draw the enemy to them, diverting resources from the main line of attack so infantry and mechanized untis can move in. This may include seizing a key road or river crossing until the main units arrive. It is incredibly tough for them as they are often outmanned, outsupplied, and outgunned, facing tanks and artillery with nothing more than their own rifles, bazookas, and mortars they can fly in with. While they are only supposed to hold out until the infantry arrives with larger numbers and tanks in a day or two, the reality is they were often left practically abandoned without support or re-supply for weeks at a time.
In the first 3 books, Burgett took us to his training as a 19 year old Paratrooper in 1944, and then on to England. He fought in the D-Day invasion in Normandy behind the lines for 7 days straight. Then on to Holland for the poorly led Operation Market Garden by Field Marshal Montgomery where 80% of the allied paratroopers from Poland, Britain, and the US were wasted away in a series of inept decisions, security breaches, and failures to provide support. The men were finally relieved 70 days later than promised. Then without rest or resupply the men were rushed to Bastogne, to do the impossible. Hold an area where seven roads intersected against armoured divisions, outnumbered 10 to 1. The 101, along with two armored tank battalions, a tank destroyer platoon, and a artillary battery - held off nine full full strngth armoured Panzer Divisions for eight days until relief arrived, then fought alongside their relief for another 22 days until the Germans were beat back to their own border.
Now in this fourth book, the job is not complete, and the trops are chasing the Germans into the heartland. Along the way they would uncover the horrors in deathcamps the Nazis left behind. This book series by Donald Burgett is the most graphic and honest description of being an active fighting soldier in WWII I have read and left a deep impression on me. Simple words and detailed memeories from a simple man. It is a great read, and I could not put it down.
Well Written.......2005-08-20
Another excellant account about the WWII experience from someone who was there. A real tribute to the people that fought the war with Don Burgett and the 101st Airbourne Division.
Beyond the Rhine.......2005-03-14
The 101st Airborne continues their very dangerous, physical, and mentally straining journey throughout WWII. This novel in the series starts you off right where you last herd about the 101st screaming eagles, in the middle of one of the biggest battles in WWII, The Battle for Bastonge. This outfit struggles to keep their moral and state of mind on a good track while physically battling the harsh winters of France and Germany, in subzero temperatures, just to defend this worthless frozen region.
Donald R. Burgett puts you right in the middle of WWII and shows the reader the aches and pain of war, but also the glory of victory. After he has survived three major campaigns in WWII he, "Had been wounded three different times, and, in seniority, was one of the oldest of the old men". Burgett makes the reader feel sympathy for the soldiers as they struggle to keep warm in frozen fox holes, get into fights over warm food, and decide on who gets to take the first helmet bath.
This novel is part of a series of stories that shows Burgett's experience in WWII. It is the 4th and last book in the series of four that caps off Mr. Burgett's WWII experience. These unbelievable experiences show the honor and dedication all of our WWII veterans had for there country. This is one of the best WWII novels I have ever read, so I highly recommend this novel for anyone with even a small interest in the military field.
Book Description
The development of US Army infantry equipment has been a story of trial and error, of adopting new designs to meet new problems. It was not until 1910 that a whole system of equipment, including everything from the waist belts to the canteens to the cartridge-carriers to the haversack, was officially adopted. Prior to that, each piece of equipment was designed to meet a specific need, without any consideration of anything else the soldier had to carry. Packed with photographs and illustrations, this book explores the history of US Infantry equipments from 1775 to 1910, covering everything from blankets to bayonets.

The Great Divide is a blueprint for how the Democratic Party can regain, and maintain, control of the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives. John Sperling and his co-authors acknowledge that the U.S. has seldom been truly united, and there currently exists such a wide gap that the U.S. is effectively two nations: "one traditional and rooted in the past, and one modern and focused on the future." They are divided along racial, ethnic, religious, cultural, political, and geographic lines. The battle, they write, is not Left versus Right; rather, it's Metro versus Retro America. Retro America is defined by the South, the Midwest, and the Rocky Mountain states; Metro America consists of the two coasts and the Great Lakes states. The authors argue that neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are national parties, so there is no point in behaving as such. They recommend that the Democrats concede the Retro states and focus entirely on the Metro states, which should be their base. This would allow the party to develop a coherent message that would connect with voters and to take advantage of the fact that Metro states account for 65 percent of the population. Then, once a strong base is built, the Democrats can work on unifying America as a whole. The authors, led by John Sperling, former chairman of the Apollo Group Inc. and founder of the University of Phoenix, show how the Republicans brilliantly built a brand image by manipulating facts and waging a culture war, and they offer specific ways in which the Democrats can counter the attacks and build a brand of their own on the basis of concepts of inclusion, security, and science. The book also includes highly specific policy recommendations for the Democratic Party, as well as compelling information on a wide range of issues, including corporate welfare and subsidies, the role of religion in America, and ways to reduce poverty. Copious statistics, charts, poll results, and graphs complement the text without drying it out, making this a thoughtful, well-researched, and intriguing book that offers much to ponder for readers on both sides of the divide. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
This book reframes the "red state"/"blue state" debate as "retro America" -- the South, the Plains states, the Mountain West, and Appalachia -- vs. "metro America," composed of the populous states on both coasts and the Great Lakes states. The authors -- three of them economists -- detail how the Republicans pander to the fears of retro America's fundamentalist Christians while frantically outsourcing jobs, shredding the social safety net, and subsizing corporate interests at the expense of the lives of average citizens. The book then shows Democrats how to take back the country by focusing entirely on the metro states -- their natural base, which also happens to account for 65 percent of the population. Once a strong base is built, the authors argue, the Democrats can work on unifying America as a whole. A wealth of color photos, political cartoons, maps, charts, and graphs make this important book an accessible, lively read.
Customer Reviews:
Worth it for democrats, waste of time for republicans.......2006-10-19
This book is intended for progressive democrats and not for conservative republicans so if you fall in the conservative/republican category you should not buy this book since it is going to be a waste of your money and you are only going to come here to give a bad review. It's like a democrat reading books on what he should do in order to help republicans win elections.
If you consider yourself a progressive democrat, than this book is definitely good reading even if you end up disagreeing with its authors. It might or might not be a point of view you share with the authors but it's a point of view that is worth reading about.
A bad review from conservative readers coupled with good reviews from liberal readers means this book is at least worth reading. If the ideas in this book were so terrible then the conservative readers should be taking their time to give great reviews and to urge democrats to adopt the book's point of view. However, instead, I see these readers taking a different approach and badmouthing the book.
I read this book a while ago when it was available for free on the internet. In short, the book urges democrats to organize like the republican well oiled machine, to create a base and only focus on that base in order to win elections instead of trying to please people who are not going to be voting for you no matter what.
The background and research is interesting but even when I don't fully agree with what is said, it is still worth reading it. I don't think the book is available online anymore since the site has been down for weeks (or perhaps, months) but the price of the book went down to $13 (and change) on Amazon and that is much better of a price then the original $40 - $50 bucks when the book was originally released.
Wrong on so many levels, it isn't funny........2005-03-09
Where do I start here. As a person who has lived in both "retro" and "metro" states, I can sit confident that Mr Sperling is utterly incapable of comprehending modern politics, but instead good at phrasing enough copious generalities about an entire region as to not be in touch with reality. The book denotes the extractive, backwards, immoral, overly religious and lack of contribution to the nation in general that is supposed to be the south, midwest, and other "red" zones. Of course the book then paints a near perfect picture of the supposevly perfect Metro zones, mainly New York and San Francisco. The book bases most of it's text off of questionable statistics.
The south and mid west are one of the fastest growing regions both in terms of substainable economy and growing populations and infrastructural growth, with a nearly 3 digit increase in the last 4 years. Why? because the traditionally industrialized areas of the north and west are too expensive in comparison.Countless auto manufactoring, electronics, and high tech firms both foreign and domestic have moved their operations to the south.I could go on and on, but anyone who makes such a stupid claim that the south and mid west are based singularly on farming and mining needs to pack some bags and see for themselves. It is perhaps that last vestige of modern American economic opportunity. Meanwhile, 3 of 5 people from ages 18-26 living in CA and NY plan to buy a home elsewhere do to escalating prices.California is becoming the land of no middle class and no opportunity for those at the bottom rung. The public school system in California is amoung the poorest in the nation, coming from the wealthiest states. So does this represent the ideal situation that Sperling denotes as progressive and forward? We in the south don't claim to live in a utopia, but I can vouch for one who has seen both that the grass certainly isnt greener in the "metro" states.
The worst part about this book is that it does more to damage the credibility of the democratic party more than anything. I myself am democratic and continually find myself embaressed when such eccentric liberal ellitists spew such worthless propaganda for the masses when more could have been accomplished by perhaps admitting that the democrats have a problem reaching out to a ever growing sector of the population that isnt going to get any smaller. Anyone can tell you that making enemies with the "other side" gets you nowhere fast. Then again I don't have 3 billion dollars to record my passing opinions. Perhaps that final analysis is the more ironic of all: a perfect picture of the ever outdated bigotry of cross sectioned America as seen by the elite but uneducated.
Just what the party needs..........2004-12-06
... the Republican party, that is. As an advocate of reason (and therefore free market economics) who is (1) practical enough not to vote libertarian until we can rank votes, (2) tolerant enough to live side by side with Christians whose values I share although believing said values spring more convincingly from reason than from the Bible, and (3) certain that FDR, LBJ and WJC have shredded this nation, I wholeheartedly embrace any such effort as this book. The one thing the authors have right is that the divide exists, and it is truly great (and becoming greater). The analysis is so far off the mark, however, that it is absurd. But that's what makes this a truly marvelous book.
The good news is that they really don't have any choice. Clinton et. al. may have triangulated to appear palatable, but with the ascendancy of the new media, Michael Moore, the Dean crowd, moveon.org and thousands of crazed leftist supporters will never again allow such a watered down approach. Only one thing has changed - everyone now sees the dems for what they are; there is no going back. And they cannot win by advancing more forcefully what is so odious to so many, as this book suggests. Either way, it's a win for the good side. But how much more entertaining to watch them seal their fate by unapologetically advancing undiluted leftism, to the abhorrence of all who happen to care for the American experiment.
NOTE: the book can be had for free from retrovsmetro.org in PDF format. Whichever way you go is fine - purchase it and finance the insanity, sealing the dems fate further. More of this sort of gobbledy-gook only helps, through the back-door, so to speak. Alternatively, grab it for free, and get a little personal pleasure over denying some cash to those who would take your money and finance all manner of irrationality with it. Either way, you can't lose!
An interesting, if not thorough, look at an intriguig topic.......2004-12-04
The consensus seems to be the America is a divided country, and this divide seems to be the source of a lot of contention. If you don't believe me, read the reviews for this book and see how the 'five-starers' bemoan conservatism while the 'one-starers' belittle liberals.
All in all, the text sets out to do exactly what it says - it analyzes the urban/rural divide in America, breaking it down into political, economic, geographic and environmental terms. It offers an interesting if not unbiased perspective on the sources of this divide, the legislative result, and some of the consequences. If you like facts, figures and charts, this is the book for you, because it presents a ton of them. All in all, there were some new and interesting ideas, the book was well written, and the facts were backed up pretty well.
But be forewarned, this is not a text that seeks to bridge the divide or create any suggestions on how we can come to a common understanding. In general, its purpose is to create a progressive 'primer', setting down what in the authors' opinion are the policies and strategies that will make America a progressive nation again, and pointing out why regressivism is bad. If you are looking to get a little riled at conservatives, this is a great book. If you're interested in what the divide means for America, this is a great book. If you're tired of political tension and want to forget that the election ever happened, I recommend something else.
All you need to do is read the reviews.......2004-11-17
You don't need to read the whole book--read the reviews. The conservatives and liberals speak for themselves, and both make excellent points. The problem with this book is that it's self defeating. Sperling claims to be "metro" and outlines metro values, but does not do a good job practicing them. He has created encompassing, stereotyping labels for two groups who are themselves made up of a diverse number of smaller groups and pits them against each other. It's easy to find points of dissention. We need to begin by at least finding a few points of connection.
Book Description
Humans are entirely dependent on plants: we eat them, build with them, burn them for power, breathe the air they maintain, cure our ills with them. Yet, we are destroying this fundamental resource at a terrifying rate. This extensively revised and updated edition of Anthony Huxley's magnificent global overview of our plant kingdom portrays the beauty, diversity, and history of wild and cultivated plants, highlighting their profound importance in our lives. With its beautiful color photographs, drawings, charts, diagrams, and superb text, Green Inheritance describes the role of plants in the global environment and across cultures; shows how plants are used for food, fuel, and medicine; considers their role for us as objects of beauty in gardens; and much more. Encyclopedic in scope and full of intriguing stories about many individual plants, this remarkable book emphasizes just how essential our green inheritance is to the future of humanity.
Huxley explores many topics that reflect a deepening concern about the threats to our plant heritage such as the slender genetic base of the world's staple crops and the dwindling last locations of wild resources with unexplored potential. This new edition expands its coverage of current issues such as invasive plants, hotspots of plant diversity, herbal medicines, genetically modified crops, and sustainable timber harvesting. Writing with wisdom and vision, Huxley has created an invaluable resource for learning about the world's plant life that underscores the importance and urgency of plant conservation.
Customer Reviews:
Any with an interest in botany, conservation or plant history must have GREEN INHERITANCE.......2006-05-20
If GREEN INHERITANCE: SAVING THE PLANTS OF THE WORLD sounds like a familiar topic, it's because it's a completely revised, expanded edition of the prior WWF BOOK OF PLANTS. Any with an interest in botany, conservation or plant history must have GREEN INHERITANCE: it explores many topics relating to plant issues and conservation, from the dwindling genetic base of the world's crops and the fading last wild places where new plants may be discovered. GREEN INHERITANCE expands upon its predecessor with new coverage on invasive plants, plant diversity issues, herbal medicine, and more. A wealth of color photos throughout and chapters linking human concerns with issues of plant preservation make GREEN INHERITANCE of interest not only to the college-level collection, but to any general-interest public library strong in conservation titles.
