Book Description
An unforgettable anecdotal survey, by turns deeply moving and beguilingly entertaining, of the surprising roles that animals have played throughout the history of warfare. (SEE QUOTE.)

Great introductory book.......2004-03-12
I took a chance on the book when I saw it in a discount bin, and glad I did. The major fault I find with the book is that it never gives more than a paragraph or two of attention to any of the individual animals. It does cover a wide variety of animals, and tells more about the hardships the group had to undergo instead of the individual acts of heroism. My recommendation is to pick up the book (the authors percentage of this book goes to a statue fund for war animals) and use the information found in it to do more research on the subject on the net or through other books..., some of which are mentioned as great references within this book.
Book Description
Examining works which supported the abolition of monarchy and its replacement with a republic, Jonathan Scott ventures beyond existing studies of individual authors or specific themes to offer the first general account of an influential body of writing. Poets such as John Milton as well as journalists, political leaders, theorists and whig martyrs were among those contributing to the cultural ferment. The result is a major contribution to our understanding of seventeenth-century England, from one of its foremost historians.

Customer Reviews:
The valuable inventing logbook.......2000-07-27
I have purchased and used The Idea Logbook on the development of numerous product inventions that my company has been (and is) developing.
This book offers substantial information about the overall inventing process of which I have greatly appreciated, but there are two valuable assets to it that is imperative in developing a new product.
The first one is its ability to aid me in monitoring all my costs, time and material. As an electronic assembly manufacturer, this is essential in determining production and marketing figures.
The second factor, it is a logbook that provides me with the ability to continually add additional writings, drawings, data and support documentation that ALWAYS occurs during the development process. This is vital for the protection of the ideas as it confirms dates and key development information.
I will continue using The Idea Logbook for each one of my current and future ideas ( I use a book for each idea) and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who is looking to develop an invention.

Book Description
Laura Ingalls Wilder Country takes the millions of fans of the Little House books and the hit TV series on an enchanting tour of the real world of the well-loved author, visiting the people and places who inspired her classic books. With hundreds of photos, many in full color, this memorabilia book makes a beautiful gift.
Customer Reviews:
A great guide.......2007-06-09
Well-written, with lots of autobiographical detail and quality photos. Highly recommended for fans. We are using this as a resource to help plan our vacation this summer.
Great history of Laura Ingalls Wilder with Many Pictures.......2007-01-26
I borrowed this book from the library and read it cover to cover. There was a lot of good information about Laura and her family in the book. There were many pictures of all the places that she lived. I really felt like I understood her a lot better after reading this book. It also talks about how Garth Williams went to the places that she lived and saw them firsthand, to try and reconstruct memories of her childhood into the drawings in the Little House books. This is a great book for serious Laura Ingalls Wilder fans, who want to learn more about what happened to her and her family after the Little House series ended.
Beautiful Pictures.......2004-02-02
Wonderful glossy full spread pictures of the beautiful grasses and flowers. Makes you want to live on the prairie!!
I loved seeing the pictures of Laura and her family. I am sure my sisters are going to love this book too.
I also liked the extra tidbits of information. Even has quotes from some unpublished books written by Laura.
My review is not the best just wanted to give the book another 5 stars.
Rather disappointing.......2001-01-06
I was disappointed in this book right from the start. To pay [the money I had to pay], I expected to get a hardcover book. Instead, what I found was a flimsy paperback which was as thin as a magazine. Instead of showing scenery from the time Laura lived in places, there were a lot of pictures of plain grasslands of the present time. I turned the page only to find a big picture of a piece of grass! How boring! To my dismay, there were no pictures of Mr. Edwards, Nellie Oleson, Mr. and Mrs. Boast, Mary Power, Reverend Alden, and absolutely no mention of the beloved bulldog, Jack. One advantage in owning this book is that it is much more detailed informative than the "Little House" books. We learn about Laura's younger brother, the fact that the Ingalls once owned a hotel, how Rose Wilder also had a son and died, and shockingly, that Rose obtained a divorce. If you are a hardcore enthusiast for Laura Ingalls Wilder things, then one reason you might want to get this book is because of the pictures from the Ingalls family album. There are lovely pictures of all of Laura's sisters, Ma, Pa, Rose, and Almanzo. The family portrait of the Wilder's is also a plus. Overall, this book was OK. The pictures of Laura and Almanzo's farm, homes, car, horses, and family settings are all good and the information is refreshing. However, the author fails to mention numerous important people in Laura's childhood as well as pictures of them. Instead of putting pictures of friends and family, he puts in way too much scenery from which the pictures were taken in the 1990's, and not from the 1880's.
A lovely book.......2000-01-22
A beautifully photographed book that gives the reader an idea of what the places in Wilder's books really looked like. These sights are what Laura was envisioning when she wrote her childhood memories.
My favorite picture is the wedding photo of Caroline and Charles Ingalls. Since they are always seen from Laura's perspective, it's easy to forget that they were once a young couple just starting out on their married life together, with no idea of what the future would bring. It was just a thought that occurred to me when I saw the picture. You just know they never expected that millions of people in the 20th century would fondly know of them as the Ma and Pa Ingalls.

Excellent Introduction Overall to Waffen-SS Panzer Divisions.......2007-10-10
This is an excellent introduction overall to the Panzer Divisions of the Waffen-SS. The writing throughout is superb: The text is clear, precise, and objective.
The book includes separate chapters on each of the major Panzer Divisions of the Waffen-SS: The 2nd (Das Reich); the 3rd (Totenkopf); the 5th (Wiking); the 9th (Hohenstaufen); the 10th (Frundsberg); and the 12th (Hitlerjugend).
These chapters do not stand alone, however, as mini-histories of each division. Instead, if actions of one division were included in connection with an already discussed division, then the author basically tells you to read the chapter on the already discussed division.
In addition, many of the chapters are extremely short (both because of the author's tendency to refer the reader back to prior chapters and because the divisions were short-lived). Thus, the chapters on the Hohenstaufen, Frundsberg, and Hitlerjugend divisions only cover a few pages each, with the majority of the book covering the exploits of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th divisions.
These two flaws preclude a five-star rating.
There is also a lengthy chapter on "Other" Panzer SS divisions but there is little information provided and most of the chapter is taken up by photos, although the photos are well-selected and well-reproduced.
In fact, the book includes well over 100 well-selected photos that enhance the text, including 16 pages of photos in full color, half of which are full-page photos and one is even a two-page spread of a Panzer Mark III (Panzerkampfwagen III) in Nov. 1941 crossing a snow-covered field in front of a farm and followed by 3 troops. These amazing pictures may be worth the price of book itself.
A fine book that provides valuable information about the SS........1997-04-25
A person looking for first-rate information about the Waffen-SS in combat can not do much better than this book. The author has an entire series of books on the SS and this one keeps with the tradition of quality found in the other books

Book Description
"The definitive account of the status and protection of cetaceans -- a well-written and interesting work on an important subject, accessible to both experts and general readers." -- Edward O Wilson, Harvard University, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize
'Multiple strategies are needed to reverse the decline of whales and dolphins, and one of these is creating protected areas for them. Renowned writer and leading authority on whale watching Erich Hoyt takes us on a fascinating journey across the complex and uncharted world of protected areas for cetaceans. This highly informative book will become a source of inspiration and understanding for the decision-maker as well as for the layperson, and an exhaustive repository of information and references for the specialist' Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, IUCN/SSC Cetacean Specialist Group and ICRAM, Rome
This definitive handbook launches a new chapter in cetacean conservation with its investigation into the habitat needs and protection requirements of some 84 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises. This is the first work to bridge the separate disciplines of marine protected areas (MPAs) and cetacean conservation.
The first part of the book outlines the principles for creating the best possible MPAs for cetaceans, stemming from the identification of critical habitat and through an inclusive process involving all stakeholders â local community, NGOs, researchers, the fishing and tourism industries, along with government planners and wildlife managers.
The second part covers each of the 18 marine regions around the world. Included are marine region maps and tables outlining proposed and existing MPAs, detailed checklists for creating and implementing MPAs, an explanation of biosphere reserves, and relevant international legislation. The book also looks at regulation of international trade and hunting, fisheries agreements and promotion of whale watching, ecotourism and other non-consumptive economic policies.
Customer Reviews:
My Bible for MPA for cetacean management!.......2005-03-16
I received this book almost a month ago, and ever since I've been using it to write my paper on MPA. My masters thesis is about marine mammal management in Indonesia, and this book helps me put many things in perspective.
I even recommend this book to my supervisor (she will buy it from Amazon as well!) and the uni library for collection. My friend in the next room is borrowing the book for a while for her thesis as well.
I say Hoyt has done a good job. This might be the first comprehensive book about MPA for cetaceans, and it sure worth 5 stars!
Recommended reading.......2004-11-29
In this excellent and definitive book, the author makes clear that Marine Protected Areas, even in the earliest stages of full evaluation, offer a realistic and informed approach to immediate and future marine conservation. Whilst the science and logisitcs are complex, the theory behind MPAs is simple. Its an holistic approach to conservation in which single factors are considered cumulatively, rather than individually. So for example, the effects of all human activities in one area (say, fishing, recreational boating and waste management) are considered all together, not just for one particular species but on the entire ecosystem in question, from whale to coral reef to microorganism. The emphasis is strongly on the management of human activities. Truly effective MPAs require difficult and unpopular decisions, such as the zoning of areas where human presence is limited and, in some cases, prohibited. We are accustomed to plundering the seas without thought, for economic and recreational benefit. For the world in general to embrace MPAs to their fullest extent will require a huge shift in thinking and greater cooperation between nations and understanding between cultures.
This book cuts through the multiplicity of labels attached to areas of protection for marine life and lays bare the precise meaning of each. Such labels generally make it easy for us to imagine that, in those protected sanctuaries at least, cetaceans are saved. But large whales being protected from commercial hunting in one area does not necessarily mean they will not be killed in the name of science or suffer a fatal strike from a ship, and goes absolutely nowhere towards protecting smaller cetaceans from dying in a fishing net.
Land-based conservation has the advantage of being relatively stable and focused on discreet areas. To paraphrase the author, one can't simply erect a fence at sea and put up a Keep Out sign. Marine protected areas need to be fluid to take into account the fact that critical habitats for cetaceans change with the season, their migratory movements and the dispersal of their prey. Further, our very definition of critical habitat must be questioned and expanded: what good a protected area for calving if there is no safe area for socialising and mating?
This is an exhaustively researched, fascinating, thought-provoking and hugely useful book. It is both reference and reading material in one. For those involved in the conservation of cetaceans it must already be a compulsory handbook and for the layreader it is a revealing and readable account of the considerable progress of our conservation experts and of the huge task still ahead. A massive achievement marking a milestone in marine protection.
