Customer Reviews:
I would like to explain why I didn't like this book..........2005-07-10
and why I did not find this book helpful.
My child is now eleven, the same age as Mary Fowler's child is at the end of the book. I picked up this book at the library because, after going through so many years, I thought it might be nice to see another parent's perspective.
Well, first it was nice to see that there is another child on this planet who is my son's twin! As far as behavior is concerned. That was *nice* to read about! On the other hand, her perspective is very different from mine on a lot of issues. She went a completely different route than we did - she had her child diagnosed with ADHD, and treated medically, and also she put him in a special program. We chose not do any of those things, but not because we didn't want to deal with it, rather, we felt a different approach would work better.
We did not want to go the medical route because we did not want to view him as "our child, the problem" and we wanted him to grow up normally. What we did do was all kinds of natural stuff, such as allergy testing, sensory integration therapy, physical therapy, but we kept him in a school setting. It was very hard, but we assumed that he would outgrow most of his more severe symptoms eventually, with lots of love, attention, and therapy. We also kept him in a regular school setting, and asked the teachers to accomodate him, plus got him help with homework, tutoring, etc.
I am not saying that our approach is better, simply that it was the approach that we chose. I don't think that anybody could make that decision for a parent, that is an individual decision that each person has to make on his own. But when I read this book, I knew why I made the decision that I did.
Throughout the book, Mary Fowler refers to her child as a "problem" child, with a terrible disease, ADHD. And it is so hard to have such a child, and nobody can understand how hard it is to have a child with ADHD, it is just so impossible. Well, I would like to say something. My child had severe ADHD, and believe me, it was not easy. However, in no way can the pain of having an ADHD child compare with the pain of a parent who has a child with cancer, for instance, or any other kind of severe medical condition. To call ADHD a "severe" medical condition is simply not true. The majority of the children with ADHD outgrow it as they get older, and almost all of them can lead normal, productive lives.
And even the behavior problems of a child with ADHD... well, I know parents who have real problems with their children, they are totally out of control, and these children - Surprise! - do NOT have ADHD. They may have anger management issues, depression - who knows? There are some children who are harder to raise than others. There are some children who really test every bit of patience that a parent can have. And there are children who are within "normal" range, and parents still have a hard time raising them. Even "easy" children come with their share of problems, too. So the attitude of "poor me" my child has a problem, and nobody can understand how hard it is for me to have a child with such a severe medical condition, well, I just don't go for that, I'm sorry. AND I am talking as someone who has gone through with my child everything Mary Fowler has, and more.
Sometimes we forget to remember the good parts of being a parent, the fun parts of just having a kid and enjoying him, sometimes we have to be reminded to just "enjoy" our children. A medical diagnosis, in my opinion, makes it too easy to focus on their symptoms - and you are constantly thinking in terms of how bad was he today? Is it time to adjust the medication? And you become so focused on constantly cataloguing all your child's symptoms, and you are also constantly reminded - my child has a problem, my child has ADHD, every time you have to remember what to say to report to the doctor, the therapist, whatever. And for me, by just focusing on my child as a kid, I think that it was easier for me, and easier for me to see all the good qualities that my child has, easier for me to allow him some slack (he liked to dig in the backyard all day? okay, some kids have more energy) and not looking at everthing he does as a symptom of a disease.
However, if the medical route is the route you wish to take, this book will be very helpful to you, as it has a lot of information as to what to do and where to go to get the most help.
But whatever you do, don't forget to sometimes just focus on you child's positive qualities (he has to have SOME positive qualities!) and just enjoy his childhood!
A Helpful Guide.......2001-09-14
I read this book in two nights. I would recommend it especially to any parent whose child has been recently diagnosed with ADHD. Especially informative where chapters regarding working with the school system and educators. Clear and easily understood information regarding diagnosis, evaluation, the IEP process, IDEA, 504 plans etc. would be especially helpful to parents entering into the educational system. Chapters on home behavior management and techniques, and information to help parents better understand our wonderful children who live with ADHD will help any parent be a better advocate for their child. Highly recommended, an easy and informative read.
Finally, a parent's perspective........1999-07-02
A wise and interesting book, and one of several you ought to read if your child has ADHD. Ms. Fowler includes a wealth of information about ADHD here (relying heavily on Russell Barkeley), but it's from a parent's perspective rather than a psychologist's or doctor's. It is well organized and easily read and understood; the end of each chapter contains a summary (great if you're ADD yourself!) which I found particularly helpful because I'm always looking back into books to find something I read earlier. Ms. Fowler's point of view is refreshing, too. She readily admits her mistakes and valiantly tries to find a way to look at her son and her family that is neither pathological nor mythological. I found this book to be useful, interesting, and, ultimately, inspirational. The only (tiny) quibble I have with it is that the "case study" is only one child. If you read very much about ADHD or ADD, you quickly learn that it manifests itself in a large number of ways. Looking at only one child (who has a pretty severe "case") may confuse parents whose child shows different manifestations of ADHD or ADD and lead them to believe that their family will not be affected very much unless the child is on the far end of the ADHD spectrum. For this reason, I heartily recommend this book but also recommend reading other books about ADHD as well.
A wonderful reference book for parents of children with ADD/.......1998-03-28
Whether you just recently found out that a child you care about is impacted by ADD/ADHD, or if you have known for some time, this book contains valuable information on treatment, education advocacy, and dealing with the trials that can accompany parenting someone with AD(H)D. Perhaps the best part though, is the guilt-reduction that occurs as Mary Fowler takes you through her personal journey of loving, and raising her ADHD son. This book is a "must-have" for parents and teachers alike!
Book Description
The true story of the bloodiest battle in the campaign to oust Saddam Hussein.
It began on March 23, 2003, a clear, sunny Sunday morning in the city of An Nasiriyah, Iraq, where members of the 507th Maintenance Company were stationed during Operation Enduring Freedom. The enemy ambushed the 507th at first light, killing and wounding twenty-one soldiers and taking six prisoners, including the now-famous Private Jessica Lynch. When night fell, 18 marines had given their lives in what would become the battle for An Nasiriyah.
For the next week, An Nasiriyah was rocked with gun and mortar fire, as the marines of Task Force Tarawa fought to wrest control of the city from Saddam's fanatical followers.
This the story of the battle for "The Nas," as seen through the eyes of the Marines, soldiers, and newsmen who made it through those terrible seven days, and would never forget what they experienced, what they learned-or those they lost in the name of freedom.

amazing detail.......2007-06-27
an amazing book. very good read. only complaint is that at this level of detail and intimacy, it is hard to keep track of who is who. author literaly has the minute to minute movements of like 10 different battle groups dialed in and well narrated. all the same... it is a great military NF history read.
Thought provoking material.......2007-01-24
This is a book that shows the acts of heroism of our young men and women that serve our country and look at their military service as helping others. It gives a true feeling of brotherhood between our military armed forces. "Marines in the Garden of Eden: The Battle for An Nasiriyah" brings to question of how ill prepared we truly were in going into Iraq and how our young men and women had to overcome obstacles that were unnecessary. I read this book with pride in our young people but saddness that as a Nation we sent them into battle when it appears that with all the high technology available, we left them hanging out there. I read these accounts of the Battle with great interest as three of my sons are serving in the Marine Corps and I knew several who were mentioned in the book. It is quite clear that the author was giving the true accounts of what happened and was not looking through tinted glasses that showed a bias one way or another.
Well written combat narrative with a personal touch........2006-11-23
Richard Lowry's book is a very well researched and well written combat narrative about the battle for An Nasiriyah. He follows several company, battalion, and regimental size units from their deployment in theater through the battle, describing in gripping detail not only the courage and dedication of those involved, but also the chaos, confusion, and "fog of war" that is part of any battle in any age. Lowry spends equal time covering the good and the bad that was the battle, from well-executed movements to friendly fire incidents, combat deaths to humanitarian assistance, treating each with the same level of attention to detail. I particularly like the way Lowry catches the human side of the Marines involved by noting particular quotes or actions in the heat of combat that makes the Marines come alive and puts a human face on the struggle.
Through the highs and lows, the average grunt Marine shines through, and learning about the "ordinary" heroism that carried the day makes this book one of the better combat narratives I have read.
"Marines in the Garden of Eden" is a must read.......2006-11-12
Mr. Lowry's care and consideration for the Marines he depicts is exemplary. His research and attention to detail gives credence and depth to the story of An Nasiriyah. "Marines in the Garden of Eden" is a must read. I couldn't wait to experience the story as it began to unfold.

Poor Writing Obscures Marines Accomplishments.......2006-11-05
This is poorly written, with excessive use of adverbs and adjectives intended to portray gallant troops versus evil foes. A straight telling of the story would have been interesting, but the continued effort to bias the reader in such a childish manner caused me to give up after about twenty pages. Of course we are on the side of the troops, but let the events speak for themselves.

Book Description
This volume explores the complex relationships between early nineteenth-century representations of emigration, colonization and settlement, and the social, economic and cultural conditions within which they were produced. It stresses the role of writers, illustrators and artists in "making" colonial/settler landscapes within the metropolitan imaginary, paying particularly close attention to the complex interdependencies between metropolis and colony. Focusing on Canada, Australia and New Zealand, its interdisciplinarity and global reach adds considerably to the field of colonial studies.

Book Description
Is Syria a rogue state? How important is it to the fates of Iraq, Iran, Israel, and Lebanon? Based on unique and extraordinary access to Syria’s President Bashar al-Asad, his circle, and his family, this book tells Syria’s inside story. David W. Lesch presents the essential account of this country and its enigmatic leader at a critical juncture in the history of the Middle East.
Syria has been called the crossroads of civilization for millennia. Lately, however, it is a nation more in the crosshairs than the crossroads. From the U.S. perspective, Syria is on the wrong side of history with respect to Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, the global war on terrorism, and the growth of democracy in the Middle East. Bashar al-Asad assumed the presidency in 2000 after the long reign of his father, Hafiz al-Asad, and soon encountered momentous regional and international events. Bashar’s efforts to integrate his country into this changing environment without being coerced have met with some success and some failure. The fate of Syria, very much tied to its young ophthalmologist-turned-president, will profoundly affect what type of Middle East emerges in the near future.

An apologetic praise of the Syrian regime.......2007-05-23
As in Seale and other Western intellectuals who take off to Syria to write a book there, the generosity and good treatment of the regime toward these people make them fall in love with the regime. You can tell from the very first page when Lesch was very much impressed when Assad replied to his emails.
Needless to say, I couldn't finish this book due to the enormous amount of praise that Lesch hails on the young Syrian president, the Damascus Lion. All that is good in Syria came from Assad and all that is evil came from Syria's enemies in the West. According to this book, the good-willed, kind-hearted Assad is sincerely planning to modernize and democratize Syria, had it not been for the Western anti-Syrian conspiracies that have so far thwarted all such attempts. What an analysis.
Also like the reviewer EDowson (MD) wrote here before me, there is no information about Syria. Perhaps if the author had access to some numbers, like the percentage of people living in poverty while Assad and his group enjoy accumulating enormous wealth, or the number of years anti-Assad opposition figures have spent in the prisons of the Syrian regime, perhaps then Lesch would have changed his opinion a bit. Most important of all, when Lesch writes about the lack of democracy and the nature of the tyrannical regime in Damascus, he does so without even blinking. As if Syria is destined to live under dictatorship and that the dictator himself should be given the chance to renounce his unlimited powers and initiate change. Don't buy this book!
Jibes with reality.......2007-01-25
I met Syrians of all walks of life when I visited the country earlier this year, and while I learned something from all of them I was especially appreciative of the few who were brave enough to give me a candid assessment of the regime there.
This book fits with what I saw and heard, and has filled in many of the blanks in my understanding of the country. If you really want to understand Syria I suggest you get on a plane and go there. If you can't do that this book is a good second choice.
A bit of an exaggeration!!!.......2006-09-30
Perhaps the author should have also made references to these 'somber' historical facts:
Israel invaded Egypt in 1956 and made rapid progress across the Sinai Peninsula towards the Canal Zone in less than one week. (There are many literatures that speak of three days.)
Israel defeated four armies in 1967 (third Arab Israeli War) also known as Six Day's war.
The Fourth Arab Israeli War - Yom Kippur War in 1973 - Israel fought a coalition of Arab Nations led by Egypt and Syria and defeated them in ten days.(Despite the political acrimonies that portrayed Sadat (another Lion!!!) 'triumphant').
The Golan Height is still under Israel's flag. (Right!?)
However, why the legend "Lion" has been restricted to Damascus?
Why the book was not entitled "The New Lion of Syria.....???
Can Mr.Lesch give us an explanation?
A bit more criticism, and you could call it fawning.......2006-08-09
I skimmed through this truckling tome last night and was delighted to encounter more run-on sentences than I have read in the entirety of the past two months. Run-ons are a favorite of mine.
Less impressed was I with how the good Professor Lesch covered Mr. Asad and modern Syria. I picked up the book at my local Books-a-Million in the hopes of learning more about Syria. Beyond a reminder of the percentage of Alawites in the country, I didn't learn much at all. In fact, I think the "take-home message" is that the author is madly in love with his subject, at least in that intellectual manner that some academics evince for their specialties.
An ancillary message from the book is that the Bush Administration is incompetent and may have ruined modern Syria's chances of joining the rest of the world. This, despite the noble efforts of the fine Arabists at the State Department to convince the Bush Administration of the errors of its Zionist, neo-conservative ways.
And, of course, Syria and its goofy-looking Lion King have absolutely nothing to do with the insurgency in Iraq. Proof of this, in Lesch's curiously contorted synapses, lies in the Bush Administration's refusal to provide the Syrians with US intelligence on the insurgency. I mean, if I were in charge of US intelligence, I would certainly let my enemies know exactly what I know about their activities. That'd show 'em!
In "The New Lion," Professor Lesch successfully surmounts his often-faltering mastery of idiom and sentence structure to scale the pinnacle of that renouned and beloved genre, the fluff bio. If this work contains criticism of Assad, as the author repeatedly claims, I would certainly hate to to read a book that's full of paeans.
Then again, if I'm ever a slightly bloodthirsty tyrant with a genocidal streak, maybe Lesch could polish some apples for me. I think I'd choose someone with better writing skills, though.

Very Good.......2006-02-26
It's a short and enjoyable read. The book should stay on the near shelf, available for review.
Excellent resource.......2000-05-15
This book is an excellent compilation of (all?)the research on what actually works in community building. It is an absolute "must-read" for anyone or any organization who/which is interested in community building. Their organized listing of key elements which must be considered is very helpful and good checklists to the practitioner to determine if all bases are covered.
Book Description
The Last Stand is a compelling American saga of greed gone wild and a small town divided over a precious natural resource.
For three generations, the Murphy family ran the Pacific Lumber Company with a tradition of both sustainable forestry and a concern for employee well-being. Their Headwaters Forest in Northern California contained three-quarters of the world's old-growth redwoods in 1985, the year in which a Texas-based conglomerate engineered a hostile takeover of PLC. The new owners quickly increased the harvest of redwoods by 300 percent, gutted the employee pension plan, and began clear-cutting acre upon acre of virgin forest.
Local environmentalists took up the fight to reverse the takeover and save the redwoods. The conflict between conservation efforts and fears of unemployment came to a head at the end of "Redwood Summer," when protesters from across the country came into town and were greeted by residents shouting insults and slinging eggs and tomatoes.
Moving from the paneled boardrooms overlooking Wall Street to the banks of the Eel River, this engrossing account chronicles the ongoing battle between environmentalists and business over irreplaceable natural resources.

This is a great read..........2007-07-31
The Last Stand is a fascinating story and a well written one at that. Couldn't put the book down. My God Charles Hurwitz is a corrupt individual. He should be serving a life sentence in stead of living high off the hog in Houston Texas. Anyone interested in the environmental movement and the destructive practices of modern day clear cutting should read this book.
A little boring.......1999-10-10
very drawn out and boring. does get interesting at times
Fascinating example of the 80s....but.......1997-09-28
It should have been soo much more. Running in the same gamet as Alston Chase's "In a Dark Wood" David Harris goes into some of the same territory. The 'good' lumber company taken over by Wall Street and turned into the mirror of its former self, this book is at it most fascinating describing the moves between PALCO and Charles Hurwitz. The arrival of a hurrican alows him to suceed in his takeover but the company is taken over by the resultant costs both to its people and the enviroment. The final point is well taken.....if you lumber in oblivion there can be no winners. Only with sustained yield can the enviroment, employees and shareholders come out ahead. The only winnter with Palco was Charles Hurwitz.
