    Book Description

"Of all the books on Native American service in the U.S. armed forces, this is the best.... Readers will find the story of the Comanche Code Talkers compelling, humorous, thought-provoking, and inspiring."

—Tom Holm, author of Strong Hearts, Wounded Souls: Native American Veterans of the Vietnam War

Among the allied troops that came ashore in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, were thirteen Comanches in the 4th Infantry Division, 4th Signal Company. Under German fire they laid communications lines and began sending messages in a form never before heard in Europe—coded Comanche. For the rest of World War II, the Comanche Code Talkers played a vital role in transmitting orders and messages in a code that was never broken by the Germans.

This book tells the full story of the Comanche Code Talkers for the first time. Drawing on interviews with all surviving members of the unit, their original training officer, and fellow soldiers, as well as military records and news accounts, William C. Meadows follows the group from their recruitment and training to their active duty in World War II and on through their postwar lives up to the present. He also provides the first comparison of Native American code talking programs, comparing the Comanche Code Talkers with their better-known Navajo counterparts in the Pacific and with other Native Americans who used their languages, coded or not, for secret communication. Meadows sets this history in a larger discussion of the development of Native American code talking in World Wars I and II, identifying two distinct forms of Native American code talking, examining the attitudes of the American military toward Native American code talkers, and assessing the complex cultural factors that led Comanche and other Native Americans to serve their country in this way.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-05-13

An excellent book that chronicles events during World War II that were largely unknown and unheralded until just recently.

    3 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2005-09-19

The first two chapters have a lot of statics and history in them. The interesting part begins at chapter 3 when the author includes interviews with the actual participants and their experiences during the war.

          Book Description

The eight middle-range theories described in this work focus on different aspects of caring in the human health experience, with relevance to nursing. Each theory is presented in the same manner, including the purpose of the theory, foundational literature, key concepts, and use of the theory in nursing research and practice. A ladder concept is used throughout to illustrate movement from the more abstract to the more specific. A final chapter discusses evaluation of middle-range theory in general.

                Book Description

Compared with other primates, humans have complex and varied social systems that change through time. As a result of greater cognitive complexity and language, humans can communicate and negotiate varied forms of cooperation. Jérôme Rousseau makes cognitive complexity his starting point in an innovative study of how and why human societies evolve. The focus of Rousseau’s enquiry is "middle-range" societies - a vast category between hunter-gatherers and states. Breaking away from traditional analyses of social evolution as a response to ecological constraints, he shows that social systems are maintained and transformed through self-interest. He also offers an analysis of how conflicts about sharing generate social transformations that result in inequality and increasingly encompassing socio-political structures. Rethinking Social Evolution draws on a wide range of ethnographic case studies to show how language and increased cognitive abilities constitute the motor of social evolution, offering a better understanding of how modern societies continue to transform themselves and showing that societies are the result of choices by people who both collaborate and compete.

                    Book Description

An intimate and honest chronicle of the everyday life of Iranian women over the past century

“A lesson about the value of personal freedom and what happens to a nation when its people are denied the right to direct their own destiny. This is a book Americans should read.” —Washington Post

The fifteenth of thirty-six children, Sattareh Farman Farmaian was born in Iran in 1921 to a wealthy and powerful shazdeh, or prince, and spent a happy childhood in her father’s Tehran harem. Inspired and empowered by his ardent belief in education, she defied tradition by traveling alone at the age of twenty-three to the United States to study at the University of Southern California. Ten years later, she returned to Tehran and founded the first school of social work in Iran.

Intertwined with Sattareh’s personal story is her unique perspective on the Iranian political and social upheaval that have rocked Iran throughout the twentieth century, from the 1953 American-backed coup that toppled democratic premier Mossadegh to the brutal regime of the Shah and Ayatollah Khomeini’s fanatic and anti-Western Islamic Republic. In 1979, after two decades of tirelessly serving Iran’s neediest, Sattareh was arrested as a counterrevolutionary and branded an imperialist by Ayatollah Khomeini’s radical students.

Daughter of Persia is the remarkable story of a woman and a nation in the grip of profound change.

5 out of 5 stars In love with Persia.......2007-09-03

Milo Wolff, Manhatan Beach, CA. Sattareh Farmaian, member of Persia's upper-upper class was buffeted around the world by the religious turbulence of the Middle East, and the international greed for oil to feed growing indusrialization. Admiration of her capable father caused her to spear-head establishment a graduate college of social services to serve the village needs of Persia (Iran). As the reader follows her adventures and hair-raising escapes you will feel that you are there with her ('Satty"); in the hold of a ship to Bombay, disembarking in the strange port of Los angeles, and enrolling as a student at USC. You will understand her disappointment that the Statue of Liberty is not in the port of LA but 3000 miles away in NYC. And her amazement watching college co-eds use their bodies as bait for males. Even if you have not read the poetry of Omar Khyam, you will end up in a love affair with the culture of Persia. You will not put this book down.

5 out of 5 stars Riveting, balanced, and a great way to learn about Iran and Iranians........2007-05-21

This memoir by Sattareh Farman Farmaian, a truly amazing woman, is not only a hard-to-put-down account of prerevolutionary Iran but is unusual in offering Westerners a personal way to learn about Iranians, their modern history, and why the Islamic Revolution took place -- including where the West went wrong.

On a personal level, this dramatic book is about how the author broke away from her traditional harem upbringing and became a pioneering social worker, but it's also a surprisingly even-handed account of the rocky course of the Pahlevi dynasty, from its beginning in 1921 to its end in 1979. As you might expect frorm a member of the royals who preceded the Pahlevis, the author is proud of her family -- especially her father, a prince of the former dynasty who cared deeply about the welfare of the individual poor -- and she doesn't have much use for the last Shah's father, who got his start as her dad's gunnery sergeant and later executed her oldest half-brother. Farman approves of the last Shah's efforts to modernize Iran, but she's critical of him because he cared far more about getting and keeping absolute power than he did about the plight of the poor, illiterate Iranians she hersellf fought to help for twenty years. In fact, Farman's real point is that the Pahlevis' indifference to the welfare and feelings of ordinary citizens was the ultimate cause of the Islamic Revolution. Given the current state of affairs in Iraq, Afganistan, Saudi Arabia, and other Muslim countries around the world, that just might be a message we should be listening to today.

                    2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-04-18

This is a story of a remarkable person who lived a remarkable life and had great accomplishments. I salute her.

However, I found the book a little disappointing in the fact that the author spent so much time trying to make out the Qajar dynasty/extended family were all good and cultured (and by inference they could do nothing wrong), while the Pahlavi family were nothing but the opposite (and could do nothing right). The truth is often somewhere in the middle of these two extremes.

The author's personal biases and bitterness often ignored facts and detracted from the book.

                    5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommend.......2006-11-09

I truly enjoyed "Daughter of Persia"! This book is a biography that reads like a novel! It is beautifully written, fascinating, and informative. I definitely recommend it for everyone. In fact, it really SHOULD be read by Americans to better understand Iran and the Persian culture.

Growth of the American Revolution: 1766-1775
                    by Bernhard Knollenberg
                    Liberty Fund, published 1975

Lawyer turned Historian, Bernhard Knollenberg's final book is a continuation of his Origins of the American Revolution: 1759-1766. The work's intent is to be "an Account of the Change in the Minds and Hearts of a Majority of the people in the Thirteen colonies" (ii). Its narrative focuses heavily on the imperial policies of the British Government and the misunderstandings that permeated communications between the Colonies and the Mother Country.

This learned work contains much that is useful to any serious scholar of the American Revolution. There is a chronology of events followed by thirty-two chapters of narrative. The book concludes with 27 appendices and over two hundred pages of notes and bibliographic entries. The organization of the work is a cause of confusion, as the reader is required to skip back and forth between the main text and the back matter in order to keep the narrative flowing. The exhaustive notes show that Knollenberg has consulted primary and secondary sources in both America and England. They provide the reader will a clear guide for obtaining additional information.

British and American relations had begun to decline during the period of the French and Indian war. Imperial policy repeatedly provoked a sharp outcry from colonists and generated increasing bad will on both side. The failure of the British government to recognize that the colonies were viable entities with their own goals meant that the imperial bond was irreparably damaged.

Growth of the American Revolution: 1766-1775, offers a conventional perspective on the events leading up to the separation of America from England: Imperial intransigence combined with economic divergence of interests. For all its conventionality, it provides such a strong breadth of material and plain style as to make it a useful tool for academics and an enjoyable narrative for general readers.

5 out of 5 stars An expansive and scholarly work.......2003-12-08

Very strongly recommended for academic and community library American History collections, Growth Of The American Revolution: 1766-1775 by Bernhard Knollenberg (Professor Emeritus of History, Indiana University) is an impressively in-depth and informative study of American revolutionary history from the repeal of the Stamp Act in 1766 to the outbreak of violence at Lexington and Concord in 1775. Delineating key events and incorporating a discussion of the historiography, Growth Of The American Revolution: 1766-1775 is an expansive and scholarly work so heavily researched that the extensive notes to the chapters take up almost as many pages as the chapters themselves.

James Carville, chief strategist of Clinton's 1992 War Room, puts the Democrats on the offensive again with this no-holds-barred response to the Republican "Contract With America". Witty, savvy, and just plain smart, this may be the most provocative book of the 1996 campaign season.

                      Book Description

"They are wrong and we are right and I'm going to prove it to you!" -- Harry S. Truman, Democratic National Convention, 1948

A rousing political manifesto from The New York Times bestselling co-author of All's Fair

One of Washington's most prominent Democratic strategists and co-author of the New York Times bestseller All's Fair offers a timely, accessible and entertaining response to the GOP's Contract with America -- just in time for primary season.

With the Republican Congress blasting away at the federal government, James Carville, a top advisor to President Clinton, counterattacks. In We're Right, They're Wrong, he uses his trademark mix of pointed argument, homespun wit, and historic lore to deflate GOP claims that nothing is amiss in America that budget-cutting wouldn't cure. Carville staunchly defends a strong government -- one capable of teaching, feeding, healing, defending and sheltering its citizens -- and provides Democrats and progressives with a politically astute program for building upon what's best about our nation.

Filled with anecdotes and political myths, We're Right, They're Wrong is a succinct, witty, fact-filled trot for judging the long primary season.

seriously, he is still smarter and prettier than Ann Coulter. If he were only a bit more handsome, he'd probably be president himself. Much less irritating than Bortz, he is still a tiny bit smug; but why not, he's right most of the time. yes this book is dated, but it is still useful for nettling right wingers

                            Book Description

Broad-scale conservation of habitats is increasingly being recognized as a more effective means of protecting species and landscapes than single-species preservation efforts. While interest in the approach has grown tremendously in recent years, it remains controversial and the science behind it has yet to be fully developed.

In The Science of Conservation Planning, three of the nation's leading conservation biologists explore the role of the scientist in the planning process and present a framework and guidelines for applying science to regional habitat-based conservation planning. Chapters consider:

                          • history and background of conservation planning efforts
                          • criticisms of science in conservation planning
                          • principles of conservation biology that apply to conservation planning
                          • detailed examination of conservation plans
                          • specific recommendations for all parties involved.

The recommendations, interpretations, and questions provided are thoroughly based in the science of conservation biology, and the framework presented is adaptable to allow for revision and improvement as knowledge is gained and theories refined. The Science of Conservation Planning will serve as a model for the application of conservation biology to real-life problems, and can lead to the development of scientifically and politically sound plans that are likely to achieve their conservation goals, even in cases where biological and ecological information is limited.

The book is essential for scientists at all levels, including agency biologists, academic scientists, environmental consultants, and scientists employed by industry and conservation groups. It is also a valuable resource for elected officials and their staffs, environmentalists, developers, students, and citizen activists involved with the complex and contentious arena of conservation planning.
