Customer Reviews:
Another great book from Fodor's..........2005-01-21
Once again, Fodor's puts out a great all-around travel guide. Fodor's divides its books into easy-to-use sections about everything-you-need-to-know-about-Paris-but-were-afraid-to-ask: the beginning section covers the practicalities of traveling to another countries (NO NEED TO TIP). The chapters are as follows:
EXPLORING PARIS: The city is divided into sections. Suggested walks are given with maps of the area and detailed descriptions of the sights.
WHERE TO EAT
WHERE TO STAY: Maps are also provided for both of these.
NIGHTLIFE & THE ARTS
SPORTS & THE OUTDOORS
SHOPPING
SIDE TRIPS FROM PARIS
UNDERSTANDING PARIS
I found this to be an indispensable guide to finding my way around a city I've never been to before. Especially helpful was the suggested walks for seeing Paris in five days. This book also covers Versailles and other Paris side trips. The "Fodor's Choices" at the beginning list the top places to visit in the city.
BEWARE: Fodor's lists "budget lodging" and "budget restaurants." I found that - especially with the current exchange rates - even the "budget" hotels, restaurants, and cafes to be a bit on the expensive side. If you really need to economize for a place to stay, you may need to do some additional internet searching.
You're going to LOVE PARIS! .......2004-10-24
I've made >20 visits to France all together. Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet your exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the Metro. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the center of the city.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.
Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.

Book Description
The mathematical analysis of contact problems, with or without friction, is an area where progress depends heavily on the integration of pure and applied mathematics. This book presents the state of the art in the mathematical analysis of unilateral contact problems with friction, along with a major part of the analysis of dynamic contact problems without friction. Much of this monograph emerged from the authors' research activities over the past 10 years and deals with an approach proven fruitful in many situations. Starting from thin estimates of possible solutions, this approach is based on an approximation of the problem and the proof of a moderate partial regularity of the solution to the approximate problem. This in turn makes use of the shift (or translation) technique - an important yet often overlooked tool for contact problems and other nonlinear problems with limited regularity. The authors pay careful attention to quantification and precise results to get optimal bounds in sufficient conditions for existence theorems. Unilateral Contact Problems: Variational Methods and Existence Theorems a valuable resource for scientists involved in the analysis of contact problems and for engineers working on the numerical approximation of contact problems. Self-contained and thoroughly up to date, it presents a complete collection of the available results and techniques for the analysis of unilateral contact problems and builds the background required for further research on more complex problems in this area.

Book Description
After receiving the message, "Come to Vezendi, or someone will die," Lina and the gang set off for Vezendi. And it's no easy trip--everywhere they go, a trap is awaiting them. Who could be behind the chaos? It's Lina's old "friend" Zuuma, who will stop at nothing to enact his revenge on Lina and Gourry. When the group finally decides to finish off Zuuma once and for all, will their efforts be enough? The manga that sparked the anime-manga phenomenon comes to a rousing finale!
Customer Reviews:
Vol. 6 -- Mostly Filler.......2006-02-10
In this 6th volume of the "Slayers" series, Lina, Gourry, Amelia, and Zelgadis are still together. The assassin Zuuma appears again, however he appears to have completely healed from his wounds where he'd lost both arms. However when Xellos appears on the scene, Zuuma retreats and warns Lina that if she doesn't meet him in the city of Vezendi, someone will die.
Upon reaching the city, the rich merchant Radok has received a death threat from Zuuma, warning him to hire Lina and company or he would die. Lina takes the job, but matters get complicated when the Mazoku Seigram appears along with some lesser Mazoku. With so many wishing to kill Lina, how will she keep herself and her client alive?
I have to say that this volume has been the weakest of the six that TokyoPop has published. In fact, the only part of the book that is really interesting is the epilogue. That contains a very interesting conversation between Lina and Xellos, the topic of which anime fans will already be aware of.
While getting some resolution on both villians Zuuma and Seigram is nice, it really is not that interesting seeing as how both wish to kill Lina for revenge. So we get a lot of desperate battles for Lina and company to fight. However, there's no advancement of any of the characters. Lina shows off a few new spells but that's it. Since there is no time spent on character moments (save for the epilogue as I stated), I found this volume to be nothing more than "filler" and not very interesting filler.
TP didn't include the author's note at the end of the novel as they have in the past. That's unfortunate as I'd enjoyed reading them. For those who don't know, the "L-sama" character mentioned in the previous novel's author-notes is supposed to be the Lord of Nightmares, who acts an awful lot like Lina. ^_^
Also as I've stated previously, no Japanese honorifics are used. Having discussed this with translator Jeremiah Bourque, I understand why he's not using them here (he used them in the manga "Mahoromatic"), but I still feel he should have. Oh well.
As I write this, it appears that this is the last volume of the "Slayers" novel series that TokyoPop has licensed (a/o Feb 2006), meaning the final two volumes for this story-arc aren't in the English-speaking world's near-future, nor are the volumes that proceed (there are 15 total volumes featuring Lina and Gourry). That's sad since I'd love to read the entire series. If you like these novels, I encourage you to let TokyoPop know.
Bottom line: the weakest of the novels to date, but the epilogue was good and set the table for the 7th & 8th volumes. Let's hope that TokyoPop will go ahead and license them for publication in English.

Book Description
With a sharp eye and wry wit, Roger Hall recounts his experiences as an American Army officer assigned to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. First published in 1957 to critical and popular acclaim, his book has become a cult favorite in intelligence circles. The story follows Hall's experiences from a junior officer fleeing a tedious training assignment in Louisiana to his quirky and rigorous OSS training rituals in the United States, England, and Scotland. Quick to pick up on the skills necessary for behind-the-lines intelligence work, he became an expert instructor. But he was only reluctantly given operational duties because of his reputation as an iconoclast. In his droll story-telling style, Hall describes his first parachute jump in support of the French resistance as a comedy of errors that terminated prematurely. His last assignment in the war zone came when William Colby appointed him section head of an operations group that made its way on foot through Sweden. Called one of the funniest and most perceptive works ever written about life in the OSS, the book includes a wealth of unforgettable personalities that Hall encountered over the years. 220 pages. Paperback. 6 x 9 inches.

You're Stepping on My Cloak and Dagger.......2007-02-08
Who thought spying could be funny. If you like to laugh, this is the book for you. Hall's life as a spy was hardly 007-ish, but you can't find a spy with a better sense of humor. It's hard to believe that one Army officer could find himself in as many laughable predicaments as he was. This book will ring even truer for those who have see military service. More than once I had to wipe tears of laughter from my eyes so I could continue reading. Not a long read, but certainly one high on the laugh scale.
You're Stepping on My Cloak and Dagger--review.......2006-04-30
Sometimes, just sometimes, the things of your youth are
better than when you experienced them the first time: things
like "You're Stepping on My Cloak and Dagger," Roger Hall's
memoirs of his experiences in the OSS (Office of Strategic
Services, forerunner of the CIA) during WW2.
In 1966 Miss Estele, Greenon High School's librarian, once
very sternly suggested to me that I get my own copy of Mr.
Hall's book. Seems that I had checked out the school's copy so
much that it was in danger of disintegration.
Not wishing to run afoul of the lady with the piercing
eyes which could wound at 50 paces, I broke down and bought a
copy for myself.
I destroyed it with repeated readings.
I bought a second.
I destroyed it. Read the words off the page.
I went for a third copy. But alas the book was not to be
found. Literally for decades I searched used book stores and
book sales. Libraries. No dice. Gone. Phfttttttt.
But the book was always with me. I have never attended a
briefing or presentation without thinking of the great
exploding map overlay caper. Phrases and descriptions stalked
their ways into my daily vocabulary like two great stalking
things. I mean, how can you top, "...the account being one in
which the fact quotient was in inverse ratio to the difficulty
of the feats of derring-do allegedly performed"? I even once
wrote on a subordinate's performance evaluation, "...highly
praised for his capabilities and performance and resoundingly
damned for his irreverence."
Great stuff there.
Then a co-worker, to whom I had mentioned the book, found
that Bluejacket Press had republished it and it was available
through Amazon.com.
So as fast as I could, I got my third copy.
Would it be as funny? Well, actually, it was funnier.
Mr. Hall's wit can be rapier-like and delicately subtle.
Mr. Hall's wit can also cut a swath through inefficient
bureaucratic nonsense like a claymore. His ability to turn
ordinary words into lasting memories would make Mr. Hall a
blast with whom to split a pizza and a six-pack.
It's funnier because having spent 6 years and 3 months on
active duty in the service of His Majesty the Commandant of the
Marine Corps, I have a much deeper appreciation for the surreal
ambiance which permeates the military and which almost seems
designed to impede progress.
It's funnier because in spite of the institutionalized
blood-mindedness, we still manage, somehow, to weave our way
through lunacy's labyrinth.
It's funnier because I've lived in the Slidell, La area;
and, by-jingoes, it IS a place perfectly suited to rot away in.
This time around when I read of his experiences and
friendship with a Major William Colby, I know that William
Colby went on to become the head of the CIA.
If you like memoirs, this is the book for you. If you
like military history, this is the book for you. If you just
like funny books, this is the book for you.
Rick roberts
What a joy this book is back in print..........2006-03-06
Having first read this book back in the 60s, it's the one I would have said most deserves to be back in print after all these years, so it's great to see that this is the case. The book is the autobiographical narrative of Roger Hall's time in the OSS, starting from his initial arrival for training, through his deployment in the European field, and finally arriving back after the war to debrief German POWs. It could have been a very dry and dull book, but Hall puts humor in nearly everywhere, and you get the idea that this is not because he's a masterful writer, carefully crafting the humor, as would Dave Barry, but rather because he and his pals had quirky sense of humor and a joy of life no matter where they were. And the book reads as well now as it did back in the 50s and 60s. Now if only a movie were made of it...
A must read!.......2006-03-06
This book is definitely one of my favorite books! From the first sentence I was laughing and I read it in one enjoyable sitting. For anyone interested in the OSS it is a must read. Not only is it a page-turner, but when you are finished you can't help but be amazed by what the OSS was able to accomplish and how they went about it. It is informative and personal and at the same time you just can't stop laughing. Thank you Roger Hall for sharing your experiences!

Author Duane Schultz offers a fascinating chronicle of Civil War espionage in this account of the infamous Dahlgren raid, a bold attempt by a small detachment of Union cavalry to free prisoners of war held by the Confederates in Richmond. The effort failed, but its consequences were enormous; allegedly found among slain commander Ulric Dahlgren's papers was an order to assassinate Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Schultz argues persuasively that the papers were a forgery, but whatever the truth, they started a controversy that encouraged Davis to order secret agents based in Canada to launch a campaign of terror on the Northern home front. He describes a few stunning near- misses: the Confederates once nearly captured Vice President Andrew Johnson, and in another plot almost took possession of the only warship on the Great Lakes. They also engaged in a primitive form of biological warfare: collecting the garments of yellow fever victims and distributing them in Washington, D.C. (to no apparent effect). This narrative of Civil War intrigue is sprinkled with true tales of invisible ink, railroad sabotage, and prison escapes; in one remarkable episode, a Confederate spy dresses up like a lady, attends a soiree held by Union officers, and learns critical intelligence from his talkative dance partners. All told, this is an outstanding work of popular history on an aspect of the Civil War long kept hidden. --John J. Miller
Book Description
March 5, 1864, was the day on which the Civil War changed to what the Richmond Examiner called "a war of extermination, of indiscriminate slaughter and plunder." It changed because of a few sheets of paper found on a muddy trail outside Richmond. Their legacy was a new and terrible style of warfare. In a daring but failed cavalry raid to free thousands of Union prisoners, the Union commander--twenty-one-year-old Ulric Dahlgren--was killed; on his body were found orders purportedly instructing his men to find and execute Jefferson Davis and the rest of the Confederate cabinet. There was an immediate outpouring of horrified, indignant rage throughout the South, and after the Union disclaimed any knowledge of the papers or the order they contained, Jefferson Davis authorized the use of terrorism against civilians in the North in the form of guerrilla raids, bank robberies, arson, and sabotage. This compelling narrative is the first full-length analysis of the link between Dahlgren's failed raid and the Confederate campaign of terror.

Really interesting read.......2006-11-14
I'm a US history buff, however haven't spent much time reading about the US Civil War, instead focusing on 20th century topics. I picked this book up on a lark a few weeks ago, and absolutely loved it. The author has a knack for setting the scene in a detailed, easy-to-read manner, and goes to great lengths to describe the key characters in a way that makes you feel as if you've met them.
All said, a great book, highly recommended.
Well worth reading.............2003-05-16
This proves to be a pretty interesting conspiracy book which in some way, may related to our current problems with terrorist activites. Here, we have an alleged set of papers found on the body of Colonel Ulric Dahlgren who was leading one of the cavalry columns which was supposed to free the Union POWs in Richmond. The papers found states that Dahlgren and his men planned to mass murder the Confederate government and burn Richmond to the ground. These papers gave a pretext for the South to go ahead with their own plans to conduct terroristic actions against the North. Was the papers planted and forged? Its a story of truth, half-truths and lies. One of the central themes that the book covered was if these Dahlgren papers were real or fake. Duane Schultz (the author) believed them to be fake. I find logic in what he is saying and believed that faked papers were meant to arouse the Southern spirit which have been in doldrum and give pretext for deseperate actions in the north. Well written, nicely researched and well presented, the book proves to be informative and easy to read. Of course, you have keep an open mind as well.
The Dahlgren Affair.......2002-05-25
I found this book lacking in true facts about Ulric Dahlgren, the nephew of Charles Dahlgren of Natchez. To get an unbiased view of Ulric read "Charles Dahlgren of Natchez" by Herschel Grower, a professor emeritius of English and American literature at Vanderbilt, University.
Ulric was while enjoying his uncle Charles's hospitality in Natchez, MS and in Beersheba Springs, TN found to be full of arrogance and very condescending to others. No one was surprised that he would have concocted and tried to pull off the assination of President Davis, or the burning of Richmond.
He was very ambitious and ln 1860 Ulric wrote to his father his decision not to stay in the South, "The Deep South, Ulric wrote, as contrasted with Texas, Arizona, or Kansas, was "too civilized" and there was no room to move ahead in these weathly cotton states" without ownership of vast acreage and a number of slaves.
The fact that Ulric's father was Admiral John A. Dahlgren the famous inventor of the Dahlgren guns made him newsworthy as well as contributed greatly to his rise in rank, which ensured his hero status to the Northern people, and also an elaborate publicized Military funeral of his remains after the War.
The Infamous Dahlgren Raid and Condfederate Espionage.......2000-12-23
A book of parallel stories, one of the infamous Dahlgren Raid captained by the egotistical Kilpatrick and the story that I was less familiar with, Confederate espionage efforts in the north by way of Canada. It also includes information on Elizabeth van Lew and other Union sympathizers in Richmond. Although familiar with Dahlgren's attempted raid on Richmond and Libby prison I was less familiar with Hines'attempts to free Confederate prisoners in Chicago. Brings up a lot of information I was not aware of such as the loss of Dahlgren's body, how the attempts to free Confederate prisoner's in the north were orchestrated, the depths of Kilpatrick's failure to attack Richmond and support Dahlgren, Dahlgren's own turn at espionage, Libbey Prison escapes and life inside and life in Canada among escaped Confederates. Well written and the book motivates me to read more about the Dahlgren affair which is still a raging controversy.
Well-written but one huge flaw.......2000-02-12
This book is colorful, interesting, and full of vividly-drawn characters and events. This makes it all the more surprising--and disappointing--that the author errs so glaringly on one of the central tenets of the entire book.
Perhaps in an attempt to provide a "fresh" approach to a subject covered by numerous other historians and writers in this and past generations, Mr. Schultz, through tortured logic, turns established and documented history on its ear. How? He claims that, rather than the infamous 1864 Kilpatrick-Dahlgren Raid being the terrorist attack it was-- with designs to burn Richmond to the ground and murder the entire Confederate cabinet--that it was merely an attempt to free Federal prisoners; the Confederates, Schultz claims, concocted the arson-murder scheme through (necessarily) forgery, lies, and conspiracy, then used these nefarious acts to launch a real campaign of terror--against the North.
This huge gaffe, which gives only passing credence to the mountain of evidence that indicts Dahlgren, leaves the reader with a similar feeling to having watched an exciting movie for two hours, only to be let down by a horribly disappointing ending.
Mr. Schultz may have gotten his villains right in his previous book about Quantrill and his raiders, but he gets them reversed here. A host of past and contemporary historians and writers from both Northern and Southern perspectives dealing with the same subject provide much more convincing evidence that Colonel Dahlgren, brave as he clearly was, was not framed, but through misplaced youthful zeal and misguided duty, came very close to orchestrating one of the greatest and most criminal massacres in American history.
A much more credible contemporary account can be found in Stephen W. Sears' chapter on the Dahlgren raid in his recent book "Controversies and Commanders, Dispatches from the Army of the Potomac."

Book Description
Ecosystems and Human Well-being is the first product of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), a four-year international work program designed to meet the needs of decision-makers for scientific information on the links between ecosystem change and human well-being. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment is modeled on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and will provide information requested by governments, through four international conventions, as well as meeting needs within the private sector and civil society. Ecosystems and Human Well-being offers an overview of the assessment, describing the conceptual framework that is being used, defining its scope and providing a baseline of understanding that all participants need to move forward.
The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment focuses on how humans have altered ecosystems, and how changes in ecosystems have affected human well-being. The assessment also evaluates how ecosystem changes may affect people in future decades and what responses can be adopted at local, national, or global scales to improve ecosystem management and thereby contribute to human well-being and poverty alleviation. The assessment was launched by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in June 2001, and the primary assessment reports will be released by Island Press in 2005.
The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment series is an invaluable new resource for professionals and policy-makers concerned with international development, environmental science, environmental policy, and related fields. It will help both in choosing among existing options and in identifying new approaches for achieving integrated management of land, water, and living resources while strengthening regional, national, and local capacities. The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment series will also improve policy and decision-making at all levels by increasing collaboration between natural and social scientists, and between scientists and policy-makers. Ecosystems and Human Well-being is an essential introduction to the program.
