This is a great book that sheds some light on the inner thinkings of Ned Smith. There is a modest number of his works reproduced in here, but we need more. As a big fan of his work, I want to see a book that features ALL of his pieces! His art has made the cover of Pennsylvania Game News dozens of times, and each one is a treasure. They really could do a book on just his Game News covers. From a Pennsylvania Wildlife Art standpoint, Ned Smith was and still is the barometer by which all others are judged. His book "Gone for the Day" is a must read if you're a nature enthusiast.

*UPDATE 8/4/06 - apparently someone was listening! They've released a Ned Smith Game News Covers book!

5 out of 5 stars This native Houstonian learned something new!.......2004-05-11

Even though I have lived my whole life in Houston, I often find myself at a loss when I'm trying to think of fun things to do with my kids. This book has been a valuable resource, providing me with information on educational activities, parks, playgrounds, and so forth.

My in-laws are about to come into town from South Africa, and I will be relying heavily on this book as we plan out outings with the kids.

5 out of 5 stars You just might learn something!.......2002-02-04

As the author of "Offbeat Houston", I'm always looking for interesting and fun places to see in Houston. "Exploring Houston with Children" is packed with lots of great places to go and fascinating things to see. If you're looking for ways to entertain and educate the kids, you'll find lots of great ideas here. There are many suggestions on integrating the featured attractions into lesson plans, and the resources, photos and web listings provide plenty of additional information. The kids will have fun while learning and, who knows, you just might learn a thing or two yourself!

5 out of 5 stars Visiting Made Easy.......2001-12-05

This is a wonderful resource to have for showing Houston to out of town guests. Visitors can tell you what they would like to see,and there is no guess work left for the host. It is a great book to have on hand for young or old visitors. I have also given the book to families with children and grandchildren.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide for Teachers, Too.......2001-06-02

This is Deborah Frontiera, Jasper Frontiera's wife speaking in this review. As a kindergarten teacher in Houston, ISD, who is in charge of planning field trips for the grade level, I am always on the look out for good resources. Elaine Galit and Vikk Simmon's book, Exploring Houston With Children, is one of the best, most complete, easy to use resources I have seen in a long time. Everything I need is right there all in one place and neatly organized.

5 out of 5 stars Exploring is the Most Fun!.......2001-05-23

Simmons and Galit explored the 4th largest city in the United States, and found lots and lots of fun stuff to do with kids. They researched and interviewed and spent a lot of time gathering so much information that you couldn't possibly get to it all in one summer.

This book is a must for finding the perfect summer or all-year-round activities for your school-age children. It's great for the big kids too, because even if you've lived in Houston all your life, like I have, you didn't know about some of this great stuff!

I was surprised to find so much great information on the space program and astronomy, in general, in and around the Houston area; and I was happy to find so much to do "In your own Backyard," on a shoestring budget.

This is a great bargain in the investment of your kids' childhoods and futures. I wish we had a book like this when I was growing up.

          Book Description

This study analyzes the effectiveness of the U.S. military attaché corps in Latin America from the end of World War II to the Johnson administration. Until now, there has not been a historical study on attaché proficiency, their training and education, or utilization of their reports by policy makers in Washington. An analytical framework is used to test the capability of this intelligence gathering system and applied in the case studies of : Guatemala, 1950-1954, Cuba, 1954-1958 and Bolivia 1960-1964.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Observing Our Hermanos De Armas.......2004-09-06

          From the Author:

The military attaché system dates from the pre-World War II period. In those years, policymakers in Washington had limited information on the latest overseas military innovations. Attachés reported on these advances at selected embassies abroad. After the war, the U.S. substantially increased its diplomatic and military presence around the globe. This expansion included Latin America, where the U.S. had attachés stationed at every embassy in the Hemisphere. Attachés reported mostly on political-military developments because Latin American militaries were heavily involved in politics. Reporting accurately on these matters required attachés to possess language and cultural awareness which hitherto they had not necessarily needed.

This study analyzes the effectiveness the military attaché corps in Latin America from the end of World War II to the Johnson Administration. Until now, there has not been a historical study on attaché effectiveness, their training and education, or utilitization of their reports by policymakers in Washington. This book uses the case studies of: Guatemala, 1950-1954, Cuba, 1954-1958, and Bolivia, 1960-1964, to draw its conclusions.

This study finds that the training and education system of the U.S. Armed Forces did not prepare attachés to report accurately on complex political-military issues. The exceptions were those attachés who brought "skills to the table" that they obtained outside the services' training system--such as language fluency. The Washington bureaucracies which analyzed and disseminated attaché reports proved effective. However, this had more to do with the redundancy of information flow than the quality of one particular intelligence agency.

Data for the book draw heavily on interviews with attachés and those who worked with them and on the diverse military archives located at National Archives, the Washington National Records Center, the DIA History Office Archive, the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson Presidential Libraries, the Military History Institute, and the U.S. Air Force Air War College Library.

                  Book Description

Like speech, the species-specific vocalizations or calls of non-human primates mediate social interactions, convey important emotional information, and in some cases refer to objects and events in the caller's environment. These functional similarities suggest that the selective pressures which shaped primate vocal communication are similar to those that influenced the evolution of human speech. As such, investigating the perception and production of vocalizations in extant non-human primates provides one avenue for understanding the neural mechanisms of speech and for illuminating the substrates underlying the evolution of human language. Primate Audition: Ethology and Neurobiology is the first book to bridge the epistemological gap between primate ethologists and auditory neurobiologists. It brings together the knowledge of world experts on different aspects of primate auditory function. Leading ethologists, comparative psychologists, and neuroscientists who have developed new experimental approaches apply their methods to a variety of issues dealing with primate vocal behavior and the neurobiology of the primate auditory system. With the advent of new signal processing techniques and the exponential growth in our knowledge of primate behavior, the time has arrived for a neurobiological investigation of the primate auditory system based on principles derived from ethology. The synthesis of ethological and neurobiological approaches to primate vocal behavior presented in Primate Audition: Ethology and Neurobiology is likely to yield the richest understanding of the acoustic and neural bases of primate audition and possibly shed light on the evolutionary precursors to speech.

                      Book Description

Do Smart Adaptive Systems Exist? is intended as a reference and a guide summarising and focusing on best practices when using intelligent techniques and building systems requiring a degree of adaptation and intelligence.

It is therefore not intended as a collection of the most recent research results, but as a practical guide for experts from other areas and industrial users interested in building solutions to their problems using intelligent techniques. One of the main issues covered is an attempt to answer the question of how to select and/or combine suitable intelligent techniques from a large pool of potential solutions.

Another attractive feature of the book is that it brings together experts from neural network, fuzzy, machine learning, evolutionary and hybrid systems communities who will provide their views on how these different intelligent technologies have contributed and will contribute to creation of smart adaptive systems of the future.

Why a man in the Far East like me has been impatiently waiting for the publishing of these volumes. It was 1963 when I learned the name of William H. Hodgeson in the advertisement of a film, 'Matango'(directed by Ishiro HONDA famous for Godzilla in 1954/"Attack of Mushroom People" in English title later exported to overseas). At that time, SF in Japan was still at dawn and some Sci-Fi writers were eager to introduce variety of SF especially to adults. 'Matango' is today a classic horror film with some but highly enthusiastic fans. The original story of 'Matango' is 'The Voice in the Night' which is contained in this volume. The story is terrifying but sadly romantic, which is common in many stories by Hodgeson.
Those who like sea adventure stories by E. A. Poe, will surely find the similar but more exciting tastes in this volume. Hodgeson loved Poe's works while H.P. Lovecraft worshiped Hodgeson. Supernatural and very physical (not psychological) terror is here.
I am collecting all 5 volumes this time, but sea adventures are concentrated in this 3rd volume. Others are also recommendable for those who expect both cosmic horror and spiritual one (ghost). They are treasury volumes.

                        Book Description

                        Dear Reader,

When we asked the beloved award-winning comedian and actor Robert Klein to write a book, you can imagine our utter surprise when he told us that he wanted to write about sixth-century Chinese pottery. Thankfully, he hit a creative brick wall (since he doesn't really know anything about pottery from China or anywhere else). Then came similar failures to write books about sea turtles, circumnavigation of the globe, building jet engines at home, the sociology of chickens, or fungi of the skin.

Luckily, Mr. Klein's paramount concern was the consumer. He knew that if we, his publishers, were going to boldly ask you to purchase his book (see above for price), he would have to write something so good, so worthwhile, so meaningful as to make you want to send additional money to your bookseller in gratitude for having allowed you to partake in this reading experience.

So Mr. Klein set out to write about what he knows best: himself. This book is about the adventures of a child who becomes a young man: how he thinks and dreams and lusts and fears and laughs and handles adversity.

From the beginning of his distinguished career as a comedian, Robert Klein established himself as a pioneer in observational humor and razor-sharp routines that are infectiously funny. Now -- for the first time -- Klein brings his trademark humor and honesty to the printed page. In this portrait of a comic as a young man, Klein takes us back to the people and streets of his Bronx neighborhood, the eccentric cast of characters in the Catskills hotels and bungalow colonies where he worked, the college dorms where he received more than an academic education, the 1964 World's Fair where he fell in love, New York City and Chicago in the 1960s as he developed his talent, and Los Angeles just as he was about to embark on a show business career. Throughout, Klein reveals the hilarity of growing up and explores the mysteries and his own foibles in sex and relationships. He recounts with wit and poignancy losing his virginity with a prostitute, bringing home a German girlfriend to his Jewish family, and the amorous adventures of the busboy he once was.

With an ego more fragile than Chinese pottery, Robert Klein has written a funny and evocative coming-of-age memoir -- well worth the price (if we say so ourselves). Enjoy.

                        All the best,

                        The Publisher

5 out of 5 stars Robert Klein's "The Amorous Busboy of Decatur Avenue".......2007-02-19

I have liked Robert Klein since I saw him live around 1975. This memoir of his early years is a lively read that gives a lot of background on what made his comedy what it is. He is unsparing about his insecurity, need to belong, tendency to overdramatize, and attitudes towards women. The result feels both honest and entertaining.

Why are people giving this book negative reviews for not covering his marriage, children, HBO specials, the Dukakis campaign, or whatever else? Klein was writing only about his youth to the age of 25, with much clarity about the manners, prejudices, and sexual mores of the late 50s and 60s, and he succeeded admirably in making them vivid to someone who was born in 1959. Would I like to read more about his later years? Yes. Hope he writes another book. But it makes no sense to rake this one over the coals for things it didn't try to do.

I take particular exception to the reviewer who even threw in complaints about the omission of topics Klein *did* touch on, including campus anti-Semitism, his difficulties with the talented but scene-stealing David Steinberg, and descriptions of the early careers of performers he met, including Rodney Dangerfield and Bette Midler. Did Klein explicitly say why his comedy seems based on middle-aged angst? No, but growing up with preternaturally cautious and conservative parents accounts for it. If you don't rebel against your parents, you are liable to imitate them.

In sum: this book is well worth reading if you are prepared to accept it for what it is.

It's a joy to read. Funny, funny, funny. Great stories, and he truly makes you feel like you know all of the people in his life. A true gem of a book.

5 out of 5 stars Childhood and early career memoirs of life in the 1950s and 60s........2006-08-09

The Amorous Busboy of Decatur Avenue is Robert Klein's memoirs of growing up in the Bronx in the 1950s. Born in 1942, Klein writes affectionately of the basic influences of his youth during the years 1951 to 1966. Each chapter begins with a picture of Klein during the period discussed.

His parents were children of immigrant Jews who were "careful, cautious, wary people" and passed on their concerns to Klein and his sister. His bedroom was a Castro convertable ottoman in the living room of their small 6th floor apartment.

The first four chapters cover his life in junior high and high school in the Bronx. Having grown up in the Bronx myself during this time, I found these very well written and full of delightful details.

The next five chapters are about his life at Alfred University in rural upstate New York. Here he confronts anti-Semitism and develops a love of acting and comedy. He also works summers in the Catskill Mountain resorts made famous in the movie "Dirty Dancing." He is no Patrick Swayze, and his amorous nature is mostly unfulfilled.

The last six chapters tell the story of his breaking into show business. His first success in Chicago's Second City and his friendship with Rodney Dangerfield are highlights of this section.

One of the recurring themes of the work is his sexual relations over time. Beginning with his losing his virginity to a 112th Street prostitute, Klein reminisces about the women in his life and the sexual and sometimes loving relations he had with them. Although he is not very graphic in his descriptions, this male oriented portrayal of sex in the 50s and early 60s may seem insensitive by modern standards. Yet it is his very honesty at representing the male attitudes of the time that makes this aspect of the book especially interesting. He says he writes "not to titillate but to communicate the excitement that sex held for me and its importance in my life." This was a time of great changes in sexual attitudes and his depictions of his and his friends' sexual interests over these 16 years shows how radical the change was.

All in all this is a wonderful memoir of New York life in the 1950s. It is also an insightful portrayal of college life at the time, especially in an era when Jews were still being discriminated against in fraternities and other aspects of academia. Lastly, Klein does a great job of describing his beginning career as an actor. How he learned his craft, the problems he faced, and the people he knew are all well represented.

1 out of 5 stars not so hot.......2006-06-03

I just finished reading this from my local library. As much as I love Mind over Matter and Robert Klein, this really isn't a funny book. Maybe he didn't intend it to be, but with a title like that I thought it would be a lot more entertaining instead of blandly anecdotal. It's really just one tale after another about women he slept with, in too much detail, or girls he fantasized about- again, too much information. And the book ends abruptly before covering any of his success in the 70's, his political comedy, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Primarily for Klein fans and the Bronx-curious .......2006-01-04

Although leavened by Klein's breezy humor, this account of his first 25 years is marred by too many overly detailed stories of too few essentially banal events that will interest only hard-core fans of the author. There is, for example, a 4000-or-so word anecdote about an instance in which Klein resists his 4th grade teacher's attempt to intimidate him and an episode running to about 6000 words in which Klein -- then 14 or 15 -- escapes a menacing confrontation with three slightly older schoolmates who accost him in a park in his Bronx neighborhood. Neither these two or many of the other extended accounts of the rather mundate rites of passage contain enough dramatic weight to justify even half their lenghth. For those who grew up in the Bronx or were Jewish contemporaries of Klein's at Catskill summer camps and small rural colleges, the familiar terrain that Klein traverses will trigger nostalgic memories, but others will be disappointed by too little focus on career-making moments.

                                  Book Description

As seen from Skylab a mere ten years ago, the Amazon Basin was a dense expanse of trees stretching from horizon to horizon. Broken only by winding rivers, it was a lush image of endless growth. More recent photographs, however, depict quite a different landscape: a blazing forest
enshrouded in a vast cloud of smoke that thinned only at the foot of the Andes. Once it was difficult to comprehend the extent of rain forests; now it is hard to comprehend the extent of their destruction. In 1989 alone, more than 55,000 square miles of rain forests were lost around the world:
burned for cattle ranching and small-scale farming, flooded by dam projects, plundered for precious ores, timber, and rare species of animals and plants, scarred by roads built by the ravaging invaders. If the present rate of deforestation continues, many rain forests in tropical America, Africa,
and Asia will be gone by the end of the next century. In fact, less than .02 percent are currently being managed on a sustainable basis.
The Last Rain Forests is an authoritative, comprehensive, and--with more than 200 full color photographs and maps--stunningly beautiful guide to the people, flora, and fauna of the richest habitats on earth. Prepared in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature, a
consortium of some 500 major conservation organizations across the globe, and the World Conservation Monitoring Centre, this is the first popular reference to map the world's rain forests, spell out the problems facing these regions, and propose realistic strategies for ensuring their survival. It
discusses in detail what the world's rain forests are, how they work, who lives in them, and why we need them, and explores the threats they face today. The volume then presents a unique, thoroughly up-to-date atlas of more than fifty rain forests, from the Caribbean to Central Africa, from Brazil
to Bangladesh. It concludes with concrete proposals for saving these imperiled regions and, ultimately, our planet.
A pictorial feast, an authoritative reference, and a blueprint for change, The Last Rain Forests allows readers to shape informed opinions--and take positive action--on one of the most pressing environmental issues of our day.

5 out of 5 stars The rain forests are doomed.....................2007-06-08

It is sad to read the title "The LAST Rain Forests", because it means, that they are doomed to extinction. This book offers a comprehensive overview about the tropical forests in general from the ecological, biological and conservationists points of view. It also puts into perspective the pressures imposed on the forests by humans and the challenges to establish strategies for the conservation of the flora and fauna. I wish our future generations should not have to live through the sad experience of watching the last forest, going....., going....., and GONE FOREVER!! Great book, although a little old (from the early nineties) it is still a great resource for everyone, young and old.
