2 out of 5 stars Annoying.......2005-02-10

Okay I listened to the rave review that "The New Peoplemaking" got here on Amazon so I bought the book. Before I say anything bad about the book I thought that the parts dealing with past-present transference (feelings about someone you knew in the past were good (transfering that to the present with someone you think is similar) Also I thought the section on negative communication styles was very good (the author could have gone into more depth with each style instead of making them into sweeping generalizations).

However, I couldn't finish this book the exercises were way too ridiculous and moreover part about viewing the world from the eyes of a baby quite frankly made me want to gag it was so long and irrelevant. After getting past page 238 I literally could not stand reading another page.

5 out of 5 stars "Ok at best" forgive me.......2004-06-06

May the last reviewer forgive me. After reading such review I felt compelled to speak up for this book. First of all, this is not a book about existential theory, so if that is what you are into, look elsewhere.

Existential theory is largerly individual. Satir on the other hand is a Family Systems theorist. I am not gifted enough to explain the difference well in a small space, but systems theories are worlds apart from individual, and perhaps especially, existential thought. What her theory is called is experiential, so maybe that was just a typo.

Anyway, I feel that saying that positioning bodies to match certain attitudes by begging on your knees was the theme of this book is a large exaggeration. That is by far not Satir's theme; it is only one chapter in a 26 or 27 chapter book. And, Satir herself claims trying those postures will probably feel ridiculous. They are simply meant to bring up exagerated feelings so we may begin to recognize when we are assuming certain roles in subtler situations in everyday life.

Her actual theme is communication, healthy and unhealthy, between family members and how it affects what goes on in the family. I would also say that her thoughts on self-esteem underly most of the rest of her thought.

Now the book is indeed long, but I do not believe in making something unduly short so it may make it in the top ten. Perhaps it would have been possible if she had wrote it in highly specialized terminology, but the grace of this book is her ability to make it simple. To do this, one has to explain what one means, and that takes space, but makes the book highly readable and friendly. I indeed agree with the reviewer who claimed if what you are looking for a quick family fix, you will waste your time looking here. Quick fixes were never known to change the world.

And folks, let us remember that this book is 16 years old. Corny, but very adorable. Still, good things last a long time. And if you must laugh at Satir, I doubt she would mind it; she herself claims in this very book we must be able to laugh at ourselves.

Just please, if you must heed some negative criticism about any book, (and this one is by no means perfect and immune to real negative criticism) just make sure it is by reviewers who have read the whole book.

Why someone who doesn't like a particular theory at the outset reads books about it I don't know. Hopefully not to feel entitlement at criticizing opposing viewpoints without even knowing the theory behind it.

2 out of 5 stars OK at best.......2003-10-27

I'm not a fan of existential therapy. Satir's theme throughout this book is positioning your bodies to match a particular attitude, e.g. "placating" would look like begging on your knees. There are too many activities to do with your family that I find pretty ridiculous, including tying each other with rope to signify something or another. By the middle chapters, reading this book was a chore (I had to continue because it was assigned reading). I would not read this book again.

3 out of 5 stars Long-winded but decent advice........2003-04-03

My Comments:
I don't know that giving a summary of the book is feasible, so I'll just point out a few things that I liked and didn't like. First, the book is huge, 385 pages. Admittedly what Satir has to say is important and perhaps even very beneficial to some people, but I highly doubt anyone but the seriously interested in psychological self-help will wade their way through every page of this book - even though the type is big and there are gobs of pictures. Perhaps this will sound demeaning to Americans but we (I'm American too) seem to like answers that come in small packages; this is not a small package answer. I guess what I'm saying is that she could have covered all of the information in about half the space - cutting out a lot of unneeded stuff.

Now something positive: I think the content is pretty good. Satir has simplified her message to where the educated layperson can read it and omitted all of the psycho-babble. The advice she gives really reads like common sense, but that is the subtlety of the message - it sounds just like the way that things should be (for the most part) which, to me at least, means she is probably on the right track.

There are a couple of other things about the book that I didn't particularly like. First, near the end of the book Satir starts giving advice on how to attain world peace and how to solve the world's problems. Well, she's a family therapist and not a political scientist or a sociologist - she is out of her league here. What really drives the point home (pun is intended as you will see) is that she compares everything - national governments, international societies, etc. - to families. I guess when you only have a hammer (family therapy experience), everything begins to look like a nail (solving world hunger, ending the use of war to resolve conflicts, etc.) and can be solved the same way. Satir may know quite a bit about families, but I really didn't buy her advice on solving world problems.

Satir also discusses the notion of spirituality. Now, what makes this so interesting is that she seems to think that spirituality and understanding spirituality are very important for resolving mental health and family relations issues, as a matter of fact, I believe she calls it the most important thing that people can do to get healthy. But she only spends one chapter discussing spirituality. I'm guessing that she realizes that her book will absolutely not appeal to 'a'-spiritual people if she emphasizes spirituality too much so she cut the chapter short and left it at that. Well, maybe that was a good decision.

There are three more things I'll mention briefly and then I'm done. First, the concept of a healthy family is a relative one. She makes attempts to rationalize why her conception of a 'healthy' family is the right one, but they aren't particularly convincing. But, keep in mind, her conception is likely the societal norm; the point I am trying to make is that she doesn't do a good job of arguing her perspective. This leads to her biases. She doesn't reveal them until the end, but we end up finding out that she is a pacifist and feminist in either the last or second to last chapter. In my opinion, things like that should be revealed up front. Again, keep in mind that I don't disagree with those perspectives or opinions, I just think she should have revealed her biases at the beginning of the book instead of at the end.

Lastly, she has a tendency to make broad, sweeping statements about the way things are (how families were in the late 1800s for example) and fails to cite any references to back up her claims. Sure, this is a self-help book for the layperson, but this leaves the scholar wanting for evidence for her claims.

Overall, like I said above, I think the book has good advice. Whether or not it will make a difference for people pr families, I don't know. If you have to read the whole thing to change, then probably not; it's just too long. The exercises she suggest sound interesting, but I don't have any kids and most of them are designed around kids. Those that are for couples, well, I guess I could try them, but I think my relationship with my significant other is pretty good, so I'll pass for now and if there are problems, perhaps I'll pull it back out in the future. If you really think that you would be willing to use the exercises and you are committed to reading a very long book, perhaps this will help. If you are looking for a quick fix (which is not likely to help anyway), then don't waste your time or money because it isn't until you are willing to really work to make things better that something like a self-help book like The New Peoplemaking will make a difference.

thank you! amazon.com made it easy for me to find text books without all those extra school bookstore mark ups!
the new peoplemaking is a great resource for the troubled families Satir writes about, as well as future therapists looking for some informed advice.

                    Book Description

She was called "The Florence Nightingale of America." From the fighting at Gettysburg to the capture of Richmond, this young Quaker nurse worked tirelessly to relieve the suffering of soldiers. She was one of the great heroines of the Union. Cornelia Hancock served in field and evacuating hospitals, in a contraband camp, and (defying authority) on the battlefield. Her letters to family members are witty, unsentimental, and full of indignation about the neglect of wounded soldiers and black refugees. Hancock was fiercely devoted to the welfare of the privates who had "nothing before them but hard marching, poor fare, and terrible fighting." Originally published in 1937 as South after Gettysburg, Hancock's letters were edited by Henrietta Stratton Jaquette, the granddaughter of a cousin. This Bison Books edition is introduced by Jean V. Berlin, the editor of A Confederate Nurse: The Diary of Ada W. Bacot, 1860-1863.

As an English civil war re-enactor, and a nurse by profession, Cornelia Hancock brings alive the horror, and difficulties faced by the wounded and the woman who choose to nurse them. The book is useful in its detail, and describes medical care at the battlefield, in hospitals, and the improvements made as the war developed. A book worth owning.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent biography brings Wittgenstein to life.......2007-07-03

The positivist, analytical tradition in philosophy is what most people would associate Wittgenstein with in the first instance, provided they had heard of him in the first place. Because of his, and because of his philosophical attacks on the meaningfulness of the concepts of metaphysics, theology, spirituality and even most of logic, he is often depicted as some sort of cold, unfeeling Grand Master sitting on a pinnacle of Genius of Philosophy. But as Ray Monk's biography shows with much vigour, he was in reality a very troubled, confused, unhappy, spiritual, and above all very human person.

Making use of all the manuscripts available as well as the many correspondences of Wittgenstein, Ray Monk, a philosopher at the U of Southampton, is able to show the Wittgenstein we know as a person that one could not only sympathize with, but even pity. Because as it appears from the biography, Wittgenstein was a deeply unhappy man. His relationships were, from early life on, troubled - not as often supposed because of their bisexual nature, but rather because of his general revulsion to what he calls "sensuality" on the whole, and his tendency to flee from the people he loved. His friendships fared no better, since Wittgenstein was both fickle and dominating, unable to deal with disagreement and very strong in his views even on very minor things of daily life - which leads to repeated diary notes and comments by everyone, from Keynes to Russell, on how talking to Wittgenstein was simply too exhausting. Add to this a constant wrestling with the fact that Wittgenstein was very religious, yet thought all religious theory meaningless babble, and you have a recipe for depression.

Monk of course also pays attention to the content of his philosophical views, and makes sure that these are, in broad outlines, accessible and useful to a general public. For specialists and professional philosophers this will rather be a tantalizing overview than a sufficient working out of Wittgenstein's philosophical views, but fortunately Monk has also written several works of secondary literature on the subject, so that people can read those if they enjoy this biography (which I would certainly read first): How to Read Wittgenstein. What Monk does best is to integrate these philosophical viewpoints into the larger narrative of his life, precisely as a good biography of a philosopher requires. The only thing I found somewhat unsatisfying was why Wittgenstein changed his views so strongly after the Tractatus, more or less rejecting the entire foundation this work was based on. One would have expected something personal to reflect as radically the change in philosophy, but either it isn't there, or Monk doesn't bring it out.

The style of writing Monk uses is very pleasant, and he avoids being opinionated either way (though he seems to sympathize with Wittgenstein's spiritual problematic a lot more than I would). An appendix to the book also deals with the (in)famous Bartley's commentaries on Wittgenstein (Wittgenstein (Modern)), in particular those parts dealing with his sex life. Ray Monk very sensibly here chooses the middle road - it is quite beyond any doubt that Wittgenstein had homosexual relations, but the idea of him prowling the Prater in search for rentboys belongs firmly in the domain of fantasy.
I devoured the 600-page biography of this neurotic genius in one weekend, owing to the fascinating nature of the subject as well as Monk's effective and lively portrayal of him. Very much recommended to a wide public.

5 out of 5 stars Integrity and Introspection.......2007-06-26

This is biography the way it should be written--focused on what made the subject important, and providing background context only to the degree necessary to situate people and events. Wittgenstein's temperament and personality were so inextricably bound up in his thought that any distinction evaporates. He thought like the person he was: ascetic, intuitive, and introverted. He questioned the value of his doing philosophy, as he questioned the value of his own thinking. His sense of duty was the obligation to speak the truth, no matter how awkward...or to be silent.

5 out of 5 stars Review: From the Bottom of My Heart.......2007-05-28

After reading this biography it suffices that I don't read any other.

5 out of 5 stars A thorough picture of both the man and his thought.......2007-02-07

I read this book because I had a very basic idea of LW's life and philosophy but really didn't feel that I understood them in any meaningful sense. I wasn't sure if my interest in either would withstand a 600 page biography, but thanks to both the author and the subject it was a pleasure to read.

The book is very thoroughly researched, with a ton of quoted material from Wittgenstein's letters and journals, much of it apparently not published elsewhere. This gives the book the considerable virtue of showing us what Wittgenstein was feeling/thinking rather than telling us (a distinction which LW would approve of).

The other thing I liked about it was that Monk gives us a thorough treatment (for a biography, that is) of his philosophical views and their evolution. The fact that the author comes from a philosophical background really helps here. He does an admirable job of placing many of Wittgenstein's difficult quotes and ideas into the larger context of his system of thought. Of course, I'm not knowledgeable enough to know whether Monk is wrong in any part of his interpretation, but if he happens to be, it's not because he doesn't know what he's talking about.

Overall, I thought the book had the perfect balance of biography and philosophical explanation. The philosophical parts were almost always linked with the portrait of Wittgenstein as a person, so they didn't weigh the book down or break up the narrative flow. Maybe the best way to sum things up is that although the book made Wittgenstein a lot less mysterious to me, I don't find him or his ideas any less fascinating after reading it.

I read the book but gained nothing as far as understanding Wittgenstein is concerned.

A little dated in the post 9-11 world, but newer versions will likely reflect a better global analysis.

I hadn't heard good things about this book, but given the scarcity of exam preparation guides available for the FSWE I decided it was worth a shot. I did not receive any pleasant surprises.

There is a modicum of useful information about the Foreign Service, but as a test preparation aid, which I suspect is the main reason people purchase it, it is flawed and impractical. While, I was hoping it would provide study strategies and reading recommendations that would pare down the State Department's overwhelming reading list, instead it provides just general information on the test itself, (here's a hint, if you need a chapter that explains how to fill out a civil service job application you aren't going to pass the FSWE), and a few practice tests.

As for the practice tests, I found them to be much more difficult than the real thing, (I just took it). So much so that it did more to undermine my confidence than build it. It also doesn't help that the book is poorly edited, so that when I took the practice tests I wound end up thinking I did worse than expected, until I start digging through and realizing that they answer key is full of mistakes and typos.

In Arco's defense, I will say that if you can pass their practice tests that you will definitely pass the multiple choice parts of the FSWE, but practicing this way is like running marathons to prepare for a 10k. Sure it works, but there are better ways to go about it.

Skip this book. If you want to prepare for the exam my advice is to get the $15 study guide from the State Department Website. It is a much better representation of the material you can expect to see.

1 out of 5 stars The publishers should be ashamed of themselves.......2005-04-11

I'm glad so many other people out there agree with me. Obviously little care was put into this book, which can only be a cynical way to cash in on the demand for a legit FSWE study guide.

Not only have I read elsewhere that the practice tests don't resemble the real test,
but during the practice tests, I was not only trying to find the correct answer, but also trying to figure out typos in the multiple choices offered. More than once did I get answers wrong because of poorly written questions/answers.

                                              1 out of 5 stars Useless.......2004-09-14

The people writing positive reviews must be from the publisher and have never taken the test. This was a real waste of money. The state department web site provides all the information that you really need to know and it's free.

2 out of 5 stars Not representative of the exam--barely adequate preparation.......2004-04-25

I took the Foreign Service Written Examination (FSWE) on 24 Apr 04 and used this book as a means of preparation. I was sorely disappointed. It is not representative of the examination at all.

The sample examinations do not match the FSWE in the types or number of questions for the job knowledge or English expression sections. There are no examples of essays in the book that are required for the FSWE. Either this edition (2001) is grossly outdated or it never was representative of the FSWE. Additionally, there are numerous errors in the book, including missing multiple-choice answers and poor grammar.

The majority of the book is dedicated to information that already is available free on the State Department web site or through its free test registration booklet, such as explanations about the Foreign Service, lists and examples of forms, et al.

The only value the book provides is to ask questions that generally are related to "current" affairs (again, this edition dates to 2001) and American government. It also provides a reasonable guide to grammar, but then asks questions in the English expression section solely related to the rules it presents in the grammar guide.

The problem is that aside from a $15 online exam guide, there is no other book, to my knowledge, that claims to prepare one for the FSWE. The online version is produced by the same company that produces the examination, but it is far too brief to be of any use.

Buy either at your own risk. You're welcome to have my copies.

                                              Book Description

"I saw my first salmon run in 1971 in a small stream north of Juneau in Alaska. I'd read about these runs before, but nothing could have prepared me for the sight of a stream blushed pink by thousands of salmon struggling valiantly to reach the particular patch of gravel where they'd first begun their lives." - Robert H. Busch The annual migration of salmon is one of the Pacific Northwest's greatest wildlife wonders. Each year thousands of tourists crowd into British Columbia's Adams River valley to watch as the sockeye return to their spawning grounds. But what was once a plentiful resource is now becoming an endangered species. The Pacific salmon industry is in trouble. Politicians, Natives and fishers on the West Coast fight over the rights to what's left of the once-rich fishing industry. The increased attention has forced the government to try and save what's left of the salmon industry. It remains to be seen if it will be too late. In Salmon Country, Robert Busch, a dedicated naturalist, has produced an intriguing account of the natural history of the Pacific salmon and the state of today's fisheries industry. Busch examines the tragic decline of salmon stocks due to factors such as overfishing, habitat loss, climate change, fisheries mismanagement, and a dozen other interconnected factors. Salmon Country also features a full survey of salmon biology including topics such as: - evolution - habitat - salmon life cycle - migration patterns Salmon Country is a heartfelt testament to the natural beauty of the salmon and their significance to our world. Busch eloquently speaks to the mostly man-made dangers that threaten the future of the salmon industry today. (2000)

                                              Salmon Country Revisited

Salmon Country is a good overview of the natural phenomena of the pacific salmon, how it is related to our culture in the Pacific Northwest and the consequence of our lax terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem management that has lead to declines in salmon populations and extinction of some salmon races. I would like to have seen Busch give more than a very brief mention to the major accomplishments of the of the International Pacific Salmon Fisheries Commission from 1937 to 1985. Formed as a joint effort between Canada and the USA in 1937, the Commission was charged with, among other things, restoring the sockeye salmon runs on the Fraser River in British Columbia. This was accomplished through the construction of fishways principally at Hells Gate on the Fraser (later at other locations where flow restrictions occurred), regulation of commercial salmon catches, and a research program to understand the population biology of the various stocks of sockeye salmon in the Fraser River watershed. Fish hatcheries were not a part of that program (a misstatement by Busch, p.99, first sentence) in contrast to programs
developed in the US that depended heavily on hatchery produced salmon. That the Commission's programs were a success is seen in the fact that runs increased from a low of 1.6 to 3.3 million sockeye in the period of 1917 to 1949 to an average of 10.2 million sockeye from 1983 to 1986. Busch and his book would have benefited from reading John Roos' publication "Restoring Fraser River Salmon" published by the Pacific Salmon Commission, Vancouver, Canada, 1991.

A unique insight to one mans quest to breed salmonids & conserve the necessary habitat to keep these special breeds flourishing in the Pacific Northwest. A good guide to Salmonid biology, life history & management. Also a good environmental read for those interested in the early research into saving the Pacific Northwest habits needed for all living thing not only Salmonids. I feel Mr. Hine's book should be read by those who want a good insight into the early(1940's-60's) environmental & conservation worries surrounding the Pacific Northwest, but still be applied to today as well.
