Book Description
During the twentieth century, Israel has achieved notoriety, witnessing almost constant conflict and violence. This book is a masterly account of Israel's wars with the Palestinians and the Arabs.
From the 1947-8 Jewish-Palestinian struggle for the possession and mastery of the land of Palestine, through Israel's wars with its Arab neighbours, to the Al-Aqsa Intifada, this book unearths new insights and exposes unknown facts for the first time. It reveals secrets relating to the Soviets' involvement in inciting the June 1967 Six Day War, the Israeli bombing of the American USS Liberty, President Sadat's right-hand man, who was a top agent of Mossad and the Israeli assassinations of leading Palestinians during the Al-Aqsa Intifada.
Customer Reviews:
Top Flight Introduction. .......2006-12-22
A subtitle for this book could have been, "Just the Action Please," because that's exactly what these 200+ pages contain. For slightly ignorant readers like this reviewer, Israel's Wars fills us in about a nation's history with clear and unbiased prose. As a matter of fact, I think that objectivity is almost as much a point in Bregman's favor as is brevity. The author gives us an outline from which we can fill in specific events at a later time (with the aid of single theme books). I had no idea before opening it just how much the 1982 Invasion of Lebanon was a turning point in Israel's history, and just how conflicted were the decisions of Ariel Sharon. One longs to go back in time and cancel out the occupation of Gaza as it has brought so much misery to everyone involved. At any rate, Israel's War is a magnificent introduction to a fascinating subject.
Quick Introductory Read to Arab-Israeli Wars.......2006-09-21
Israel's Wars by Ahron Bregman is a quick introductory reading on all the Arab-Israeli conflicts that happened since the creation of the Jewish state in 1948. It's well-written, and straight to the point. It focuses on the most important events of each conflict (in 1948, 1956, 1967, 1973, 1982 and the recent Intifadas of the 80-90s and 2000s). Obviously it does not cover the recent Israel-Hezbollah conflict since the book was written before.
Although Bergman is a former Israeli army captain, I did not find any pro-Israeli bias in the book. In fact you would not know it is written by an Israeli if you did not know the author. It is written in a journalistic style, and the author does not make moral judgments. In fact, the author is quite fair and extend on the plight of Palestinians in the last 30 years, and he also debunks the myth that Israel resisted against all odds in 1948. Although vastly outnumbered numerically by Arabs, Bergman shows that numbers does not convey the exact reality on the field.
A note of caution: if you are an experienced reader of Middle East conflicts, this book won't show you anything. It's aimed to a public that don't know much about Arab-Israeli conflicts and want to learn more about the different wars without having to read a 1,000 pages book. It is also not going into details regarding Middle East politics and society. For example, the whole period between the Yom Kippour war and the Lebanon invasion is basically skipped by the author. It focuses really on the conflicts themselves. I found the last part about the Intifadas a bit weak, as if the author struggled to define and make sense of such a low-intensity conflict without any direction or purpose other than expressing the rage of the Palestinians on one hand and the inability of the Israelis to solve the issue on the other.
So overall, it's good enough introductory book about the Arab-Israeli conflicts.

Israeli F-15 Eagle Units in Combat (Combat Aircraft)
ASIN: 1857800885 |
Book Description
Never before has there been a book published on the aircraft, units and exploits of the Israel Air Force in such depth. Interest in the IAF has always been high and seldom are its aircrew and aircraft out of the world's headlines. Previous books have failed to satisfy, either being sensationalist and low on factual content, or lacking in fundamental research. Bill Norton has trawled through thousands of documents, reports, and illustrations to produce a work that is staggering in its depth and knowledge. Those that think they know the IAF will find a wealth of new material and countless previously published 'facts' re-evaluated and righted. Detailed type-by-type coverage supported by a barrage of photographs of the IAF from the mixed bag of aircraft of its formative days, through the Suez Campaign, the Six Day War, Yom Kippur and on to be a sophisticated, well-equipped force, arguably the most experienced in the world. Included for the first time are all of the badges and heraldry of the units of the IAF, in full color.
Customer Reviews:
Pricey but invauable.......2004-11-18
I ordered "Air War: On the Edge" with significant doubt since I already possessed virtually every existing English work on Hiel ha avir. There would have to be a lot of new material to justify the $90.00 sticker price. I was not disappointed.
If you are seriously interested in the Israeli Air Force and not just stories or glosses, this book is a must have. It has a total list of all of the aircraft that have been flown, captured, or evaluated by the Israeli Air Force. Squadron histories, serial blocks of recent major acquisitions, and color plates of all actual and fake squardron round out the work.
I would estimate that 75% or more of the photographs do not appear in any book in my collection which contains virtually every every English language book the the bibliography.
While Norton is a himself a aircraft modeler, he points out that this is NOT a book for modelers. There are no cockpits schematics or walk around detail photographs for the super detailers, no tips on Israeli modifications or markings. That was not his goal.
Norton has produced the definitive encyclopedia covering 55 years of Hier-ha-avir, the Israeli Air force.

Book Description
The control of land remains the crucial issue in the Arab-Israel conflict. Kenneth Stein investigates in detail and without polemics how and why Jews acquired land from Arabs in Palestine during the British Mandate, and he reaches conclusions that are challenging and suprising.
Stein contends that Zionists were able to purchase the core of a national territory in Palestine during this period for three reasons: they had the single-mindedness of purpose, as well as the capital, to buy the land; the Arabs, economically impoverished, politically fragmented, and socially atomized, were willing to sell the land; and the British were largely ineffective in regulating land sales and protecting Arab tenants.
Neither Arab opposition to land sales nor British attempts to regulate them actually limited land acquisition. There were always more Arab offers to sell land than there were Zionist funds. In fact, many sales were made by Arab politicians who publicly opposed Zionism and even led agitation against land acquisition by Jews. Zionists furthered their own ambitions by skillfully using their understanding of the bureaucracy to write laws and to influence key administrative appointments. Further, they knew how to take advantage of social and economic cleavages within Arab society.
Based primarily on archival research, The Land Question in Palestine, 1917-1939 offers an unusually balanced analysis of the social and political history of land sales in Palestine during this critical period. It provides exceptional and essential insight into one of the most troubling conflicts in today's world.
Customer Reviews:
Not entirely accurate.......2006-10-31
The central theme here is Arab land sales to Jews. The central contention is that the British didnt do enough to regulate such sales, the Arabs were poor and duplicitous and the Jews used their lobby to get around the laws. But this book doesnt dare to ask some more probing questions. It doesnt bother to ask why there should have been land laws in the first place that forbid Jews from buying land. Such laws in England or a law in the United States barring, say Mexicans, from acquireing land would be racist, but somehow if it is in Palestine regulated by the English that is acceptable.
Then there is the question of how poor the Arabs really were. The leading Arab families were typical aristocrats, bourgouise, who owned all the land and had serfs(Fellahin) working for them. Many of these Arabs lived abroad in Lebanon and Syria(such as the Sursoks). They were fabulously wealthy and they over-charged Jews for fallow land, that Jews then turned into productive land. They were not poor or particularly fragmented, they simply got more money than their land was worth.
Since British racist policies failed in Palestine and rich aristocratic Arabs sold their land, it was left to the Arab nationalists in Jerusalem and Haifa to 'defend' Arab land from the immigrant Jews. But even these wealthy men, such as Hajj Amin al Husayni and the Christian Arabs of Haifa were unscucessful and many sold land anyway to Jews while murdering those Arabs accused of doing the very same thing.
Lastly the book doesnt discuss the role of the Greek-Orthodox Church which had exteinsive dealings with the Zionists and sold much land. To credit the all encompassing 'Zionist Lobby' for mysteriously getting around British laws, which were themselves racist, is both anti-semitic and reminds one of the Protocols.
Therefore this book has many problems, it doesn't understand the scope of the problem, it paints all Jews as part of a larger conspiracy to take away land from 'poor' Arabs, when in fact it was the Jews who were refugees buying from wealthy Arabs and being prevented from doing so by european racists. Lastly it doesnt question the logic of the laws or the role of the church.

Book Description
The dream of building Jerusalem in England's green and pleasant land has long been a quintessential part of English identity and culture: but how did this vision shape the Victorian encounter with the actual Jerusalem in the Middle East? The Holy Land in English Culture 1799-1917 offers a new cultural history of the English fascination with Palestine in the long nineteenth century, from Napoleon's failed Mediterranean campaign of 1799, which marked a new era in the British involvement in the land, to Allenby's conquest of Jerusalem in 1917. Bar-Yosef argues that the Protestant tradition of internalizing Biblical vocabulary - 'Promised Land', 'Chosen People', 'Jerusalem' - and applying it to different, often contesting, visions of England and Englishness evoked a unique sense of ambivalence towards the imperial desire to possess the Holy Land. Popular religious culture, in other words, was crucial to the construction of the orientalist discourse: so crucial, in fact, that metaphorical appropriations of the 'Holy Land' played a much more dominant role in the English cultural imagination than the actual Holy Land itself. As it traces the diversity of 'Holy Lands' in the Victorian cultural landscape - literal and metaphorical, secular and sacred, radical and patriotic, visual and textual - this study joins the ongoing debate about the dissemination of imperial ideology. Drawing on a wide array of sources, from Sunday-school textbooks and popular exhibitions to penny magazines and soldiers' diaries, the book demonstrates how the Orientalist discourse functions - or, to be more precise, malfunctions - in those popular cultural spheres that are so markedly absent from Edward Said's work: it is only by exploring sources that go beyond the highbrow, the academic, or the official, that we can begin to grasp the limited currency of the orientalist discourse in the metropolitan centre, and the different meanings it could hold for different social groups. As such, The Holy Land in English Culture 1799-1917 provides a significant contribution to both postcolonial studies and English social history.

Book Description
Within these pages the author allows the reader a brief glimpse into the true private life of an erotically dominant woman. As you read each sexually charged chapter, it is often hard to believe that what you are reading is true. But nothing in this book is fiction. Mistress Nan has beautifully recounted some of her more erotic and exciting encounters with the men and women in her life. Each scene is vivdly detailed and reads like the finest erotica, but knowing that these scenes really occured as written adds incredibly to the sexual excitement they elicit. If you wish to read for erotic stimulation, or simply want to gain insight into the intimate life of a dominant woman, this book will not disappoint.
Customer Reviews:
Kinded Pain.......2007-04-22
I received this book for a birthday gift and I was pleasantly suprised. Mistress Nan is real and very honest with every scene and in her own desires as well. I don't want to spoil the book, however every scene she describes you can "feel" some of the pain and humiliation that her slaves endure...espically Alex. There are 8 chapters dedicated to her, describing their various scenes/relationship and how Mistress Nan is on her own personal conquest to "break" her.
An educational and entertaining book.......2006-07-30
This book is a great peak in to some aspects of the BDSM world of one Mistress. It shows her journey in a way that most books miss. I trully enjoyed it on several levels.
Not quite as "private" as you may expect.......2002-03-09
First let me say that I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Nan is not the stereotyped femdom you might be thinking of though she can clearly dress up and put on a well-scripted and eleborate scene. The descriptions are not pornographic though they are careful to mention both physical and emotional aspects of the scenes. There are both male and female submissives and bottoms discussed throughout the book, the most extreme scene involve Nana and her primary female lover (she also has a husband). It should stimulate your mind and your groin so be prepared. I would have been better if Nan had gotten more personal -- why she does it, what it feels like to her, how she has changed over time -- as the title suggests.
REAL!!!.......2001-10-05
This is the first book I've ever read that I feel is real. This woman has experienced what she has written about. It is NOT fantasy. She has honed her skills to a point that she is an expert at the exchange of power that is paramount to a BDSM scene. This book isn't all about pain or bondage. This book isn't all about fantasies. This book is about power, control and sensuality. You hear about her feelings while she is doing what she is doing. You hear about what her bottoms are feeling. You learn how she gets into their heads and hearts. I'm amazed at the candor with which she writes. This woman is obviously gifted with an amazing power, and is amazingly generous in sharing it with the public.

Book Description
What were the intentions of the Founders? Was the American constitution designed to protect individual rights? To limit the powers of government? To curb the excesses of democracy? Or to create a robust democratic nation-state? These questions echo through today's most heated legal and political debates. In this powerful new interpretation of America's origins, Max Edling argues that the Federalists were primarily concerned with building a government that could act vigorously in defense of American interests. The Constitution transferred the powers of war making and resource extraction from the states to the national government thereby creating a nation-state invested with all the important powers of Europe's eighteenth-century "fiscal-military states." A strong centralized government, however, challenged the American people's deeply ingrained distrust of unduly concentrated authority. To secure the Constitution's adoption the Federalists had to accommodate the formation of a powerful national government to the strong current of anti-statism in the American political tradition. They did so by designing a government that would be powerful in times of crisis, but which would make only limited demands on the citizenry and have a sharply restricted presence in society. The Constitution promised the American people the benefit of government without its costs. Taking advantage of a newly published letterpress edition of the constitutional debates, A Revolution in Favor of Government recovers a neglected strand of the Federalist argument, making a persuasive case for rethinking the formation of the federal American state.
Customer Reviews:
The formation of our nation state.......2005-05-24
The most important development in early American history in the last fifty years has been archival. The debates surrounding the adoption of the Constitution continue to be thoroughly exhumed for insights into what our Founders were thinking. The writings of the Anti-Federalists both in the press of the time and in the state conventions that approved the Constitution have been reconsidered. I recently reviewed a history by Saul Cornell that considers those writings to be the beginnings of a dissenting tradition that continues to this day.
One of the things that strikes any reader of recent histories of the ratification debates is what a gold mine it is for philosophy of history. There are few historical moments that can offer greater insight into the difficulties of determining what were the intentions or motives behind the speech and actions of historical actors. Depending on what reading background, theory of human nature and political persuasion a historian brings to their readings of these debates it is possible to see Madison, Hamilton and the other players as having any number of motives.
Max Edling has obviously lived and breathed the volumes of the ongoing publications of The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution. More importantly he has studied deeply the history of nation formation in Europe. The lesson of that branch of European history has been that the modern European state was formed by the exigencies of war. Baldly put, European states started to force each other into maintaining large armies (or navies) even during peacetime. This development fed and was fed by a revolution in state financing. The majority of the monies to maintain their armies and fight their wars came from loans. In England, this became a large funded public debt which was religiously serviced by taxes and securities.
This is the background against which Edling wants us to see the ratification debate. The Federalists ignored their instructions to amend the Articles of Confederation and wrote up a whole new document, our present Constitution. The most controversial portions of that document related to the maintenance of a peacetime army and the unlimited ability to raise taxes. Our Anti-Federalists, who Edling sees as the American progeny of the English "Country" dissent traditions saw this as the road to tyranny. Standing armies in peacetime had been murderously used to squelch dissent in England (the killing of 7 at St. George's Fields in 1768) and in America (the Boston Massacre in 1770).
The Federalists, on the other hand, argued that we had no choice. England remained to our north and Spain was to the south and at the mouth of the Mississippi. The English had refused to turn over forts in the west as agreed in the peace accords. Unless those troops were removed and the forts handed over there was no way to assert control over the formidable Indian tribes of the Old Northwest.
Even worse, the federal government under that Articles of Confederation was insolvent by 1787. The various states ignored the requisitions of the Congress, the certificates that we had used to pay off the Continental Army at the end of the Revolution were worthless, we had defaulted on loans from France and Spain and had actually had to borrow more money from Dutch lenders in order to pay them the servicing on debts we already owed them.
The Federalists believed that the key to rescuing our credit and our ability to defend ourselves (remember that modern wars are always fought on credit) was for the Federal government to be able to establish and collect taxes directly from the people. A government without a source of revenue is a beggar. Here's another thought for you; Who would fight for us the next time? Knowing that we had failed to pay troops some of whom had fought seven years in our Revolution?
Again, the Anti-Federalists had concerns over the power of the national government to tax. It was their belief that the state legislatures were far more representative of the people's wishes than the national government could ever be. The new national government would would feel any number of temptations to lay more taxes on the people. Recent English history showed that this was quite probable.
One aside- it is very clear from Edling's argument that in the thought of many of the founders on both sides of the ratification debate that the final stage of legitimizing any law was the willingness of the people to obey it. In other words, if there was wide spread resistance to any measure passed that it was the legitimacy of the measure that was questioned. The people's representatives were seen to have failed in their function. Can you imagine our George II operating under such conditions? Just imagine how the Anti-Federalists would have reacted to the Patriot Act!
My only problem with Edling's argument is that it is too monocausal. I think that Edling has made an enormous contribution to our understanding of the debates of the founding. But if I had to use only one prism to view those debates, it would be the concept of localism versus distant government. I tend to read the Federalists as wanting a strong national government that was also somewhat distant from the people. It had to be able to raise taxes, borrow money and wage war. Otherwise it would inevitably dissolve. They also wanted a legal system that was a little further out of the control of local juries and judges. They wanted the ability to set national economic policy. They wanted to create a political culture that would continue to allow the "natural" elite to rule and put some breaks on mobocracy, etc.. I believe that they realized that the only way to legitimately do that was to create a stronger more effective national government.
In any case, Edling's book is now necessary reading for a fuller understanding of the political context in which our founders lived. Start reading, people.

"Edling's book is a powerfully argued revisionist interpretation of the origins of the Constitution. More than anything else, it helps us better understand the constitutional sources of the gigantic fiscal-military state that the United States has become."
--Gordon S. Wood, Pulitzer-Prize-winning author of *The Radical Roots of the American Revolution*
"Max M. Edling's exciting new book is a breath of fresh air in an agenda-driven and highly politicized historical literature that has lost touch with historical reality. The state-building paradigm enables Edling to bring history back in, both through comparative analysis of developments elsewhere and by reconstructing the broader geopolitical context within which the American federal state operated. REVOLUTION IN FAVOR OF GOVERNMENT is an impressive achievement."
--Peter Onuf, Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor of History, University of Virginia
"Certain to be controversial, this major and timely work alters the terms of discussion about the Framers' intentions in writing the Constitution and about the kind of government they sought to establish. Everyone interested in the subject will have to contend with Edling's arguments, which challenge over 30 years of widely accepted scholarship."
--James M. Banner, Jr., author of *The Elements of Teaching*
"Not only a pleasure to read but extremely informative and persuasively argued. I will never think about the US Constitution in the old way again."
--Daniel W. Howe, Rhodes Professor of American History, Emeritus, Oxford University

Customer Reviews:
This book lacks maps.......2004-08-17
This is essentially a pure "textbook". A few color photos in the center seem to be a rather random selection of nice pictures but without true information value to the book. It would be much preferred to have a) regional maps showing the distribution of the refuges over the country. And b) each refuge would deserve a basic map showing its actual location and shape, including some indication of scale. The contents of the text is fine, it often includes information on the history of the refuge. However, if one attempts to get some kind of overview, this book is too cumbersome. Some parts should have been summarized better, maybe using symbols, abbreviations and/or tables. Texts could often have been shortened. As an example from page 109, Marin Island. "As described by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the vegetation of the two islands is very different." The first half of this sentence is pure ballast for the reader, the source of such statements could be marked by a little index, if at all necessary. At more than 700 pages, this is a rather hefty paperback book, one reason those maps might be missing. But with some compacting, room would be available without undue enlargement. The list of "Support Organizations" could easily have been printed on half of the alloted pages. There are four idices, the smallest one, "Wildlife Management Areas", containing only nine entries. Combining them all into one index would have been much more "reader-friendly".
