Book Description

Ecological Footprinting is rapidly being adopted as the most effective and practical way to measure our impact on the environment - in both large and small scale planning and development. Government agencies, NGOs, local authorities, planners and managers are all turning to it, since without a way of measuring consequences we cannot hope to live within the environmental resources available. We have to live off nature's interest, not its capital.
"Sharing Nature's Interest "provides a simple and straightforward introduction to ecological footprint analysis, showing how it can be done, and how to measure the "footprints" of activities, lifestyles, organizations and regions. Case studies clearly illustrate its effectiveness at national, organizational, individual and product levels. An invaluable resource for anyone attempting to understand or quantify human impacts on the environment.

In Sharing Nature's Interest: Ecological Footprints As An Indicator Of Sustainability, Nicky Chambers, Craig Simmons, and Mathis Wackernagel deftly collaborate to present the reader with a compendium of information on assessing ecology on a regional and a global basis through a process called 'ecological footprinting'. The informative text is enhanced with figures, tables, summary "boxes", a list of acronyms and abbreviations, a primer on thermodynamics, conversion tables, glossary, and an index. Sharing Nature's Interest is an important and highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and professional environmental studies reference collections and reading lists.

      Product Description

The definitive travel guide to Hawaii's most popular, most populous, most taken-for-granted island. Of course, Oahu is home to Waikiki and Honolulu. But there's so much more to the island: the North Shore with a thousand memorable sunsets, the spires of the Koolau Mountains along the Windward Coast, Byodo-In Temple, picturesque Waimea Bay, snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, the valleys of the Waianae Range, Makapuu Beach Park, the Pali Highway, picture-perfect Kailua Beach: take our word for it, and come explore with us.This is the same author as for the Kauai, Maui and Big Island guidebooks; and he's roamed and roved and sniffed out every nook and cranny: historic Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, Pearl Harbor, Punchbowl, the arboretum in Manoa Valley, the Diamond Head crater, historic relics by the score, tropical gardens, waterfalls, swimming holes, hiking trails, remote beaches (yes, on Oahu!), even Chris Hemmeter's megaresorts. Included are 10 user-friendly maps, 500-plus practical information listings for hotels, restaurants, luaus, events, recreation, beaches, golfing, water sports, tours, and more. Also hundreds of web addresses, Hawaiian glossary, and illustrations of Hawaiian flowers, fish and seashells. Same handy size as our other Hawaii books.

5 out of 5 stars To the point and comprehensive.......2007-05-07

This has got to be one of the best guides to Oahu we have used in a
long, long time -- and believe me, we've used several over the years.
It's honest, accurate, and to the point. No fluff, no biases, no rants,
no wasted space, nothing "hidden" or "revealed," just straightforward,
good information. And great maps too, with terrific cross-referencing
which was so helpful and made the guidebook so easy to use that it made
navigating the island a breeze. In fact, we are still gushing over the
format and organization of the book. It was like using the Internet for
speed and convenience, and yet having the luxury of a book to take
along, in our hip-pocket, no less. The sections were tabbed and easy to
find and thumb through, and with the neat little icons and referencing,
we knew exactly which point of interest we would find on which map on
which page. The information was reliably solid--every restaurant was
there, every hiking trail was the length and difficulty (or ease)
described, all the prices, admission fees, hours, etc. were current. We
quickly found the good swimming and bodysurfing beaches, and went to a
couple of surfing beaches to watch serious surfers, and also knew which
beaches to avoid. There was definitely enough background historical and
cultural information on the places of interest on the island, and we
visited many of these, relying on our trusty little guidebook, and were
never disappointed. All in all, a great guidebook, We wish there were
      more like it.

                  Book Description

Exactly how modern humans evolved is a subject of intense debate. This book deals with the evolution of modern humans from an archaic ancestor and the differentiation of modern populations from each other. The first section of the book investigates whether modern populations arose from regional archaic hominid groups that were already different from each other, and argues that in fact, most lines of evidence support a single, recent origin of modern humans in Africa. Dr. Lahr then goes on to examine ways in which this diversification could have occurred, given what we know from fossils, archaeological remains and the relationships of existing populations today.

Dr Lahr's book provides an excellent rebuttal to the multiregionalists who believe their work is based on the fossil evidence, while the Out-of-Africanists are concerned with "suspect" genetic data. This book demonstrates how weak the case of multiregionalism actually is.

                      (Book Jacket Status: Jacketed)

In honor of the hundredth anniversary of Evelyn Waugh’s birth, four of the master’s most wickedly scathing comedies are here brought together in one volume.

Black Mischief is Waugh at his most mischievous–inventing a politically loopy African state as a means of pulverizing politics at home. In Scoop, it is journalism’s turn to be drawn and quartered. The Loved One (which became a famously hilarious film) sends up the California mortuary business. And The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold is a burst of fictionalized autobiography in which Pinfold goes mad, more or less, on board an ocean liner.

Here in four short–very different–novels are the mordant wit, inspired farce, snapping dialogue, and amazing characters that are the essence of everything Waugh ever wrote.

                      Book Description

"Fascinating. . . . First Ladies is a wonderfully generous look at the women who, often against their wishes, took on what Truman calls 'the world's second toughest job.' "
                      --The Christian Science Monitor
Whether they envision their role as protector, partner, advisor, or scold, First Ladies find themselves in a job that is impossible to define, and just as difficult to perform. Now Margaret Truman, daughter of President Harry Truman and an acclaimed novelist and biographer in her own right, explores the fascinating position of First Lady throughout history and up to the present day.
With her unique perspective as the daughter of a First Lady, Ms. Truman reveals the truth behind some of the most misunderstood and forgotten First Ladies of our history, as well as the most famous and beloved. In recounting the charm and courage of Dolley Madison, the brazen ambition of Florence Harding, the calm, good sense of Grace Coolidge, the genius of Eleanor Roosevelt, the mysterious femininity of Jackie Kennedy, and the fierce protectiveness of Nancy Reagan, among others, Margaret Truman has assembled an honest yet affectionate portrait of our nation's First Ladies--one that freely acknowledges their virtues and their flaws.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent and Informative History on First Ladies.......2005-04-18

This book is a very well researched, excellently written piece of history. Highly recommended non-fiction when you're looking to learn something you didn't learn in high school.

                      5 out of 5 stars Political Partners.......2003-11-08

From her unique perspective and personal contacts with many Twentieth Century First Ladies, Margaret Truman has told their stories in a most interesting way. The brief biographies primarily cover the years each of these Ladies resided in the White House, although their roles in getting there are not overlooked.

The concept of President and First Lady as political partners is central to the book. How and to what extent each First Lady fits into this mold is carefully examined. The influence that each First Lady has had on her husband and his administration brings some surprises.

We know of the public partners, such as Rosalynn Carter and Hillary Clinton, as well as those such as Lady Bird Johnson, who would do anything to advance Lyndon's career, and Eleanor Roosevelt, the eyes and ears of Franklin, but there were others. Who would have thought of Julia Tyler, the young second wife of John Tyler who, in her year in the White House, orchestrated a whirlwind entertainment campaign to achieve the annexation of Texas. Another second wife, Edith Wilson, virtually ran the country during her husband's two year illness after his stroke. There were those, such as Julia Grant and Helen Taft, who wanted the White House worse than their husbands.

Margaret Truman does an excellent job at categorizing the First Ladies topically. Among the tragic topics are those who may have been killed by newsprint, Rachel Jackson and Lou Hoover. Maligned First Ladies, such as Mary Lincoln, and those who lived with domineering husbands, such as Grace Coolidge, get sympathetic reviews. No sympathies are wasted on the undeserving, prominently Florence Harding.

In this book Margaret Truman gives us a splendid introduction to one of the most crucial jobs in our country. I am glad that I read it. You will be too.

5 out of 5 stars First rate praise for "First Ladies".......2003-02-26

Thank you Ms. Truman for doing what our high school teachers never quite accomplished. You made the past come alive with colorful characters who changed the world. I have a new appreciation for our Presidents and their wives. You accomplished what your father wished -- you wrote the definitive book on the subject and spoke to our hearts. I would love for you to add a chapter about Laura Bush, who has been such an inspiration to us all since 9-11.

5 out of 5 stars A Charming look at our First Ladies.......2001-06-06

I LOVED THIS BOOK! Margaret Truman uses her own unique perspective as the daughter of a First Lady to share a charming look at First Ladies throughout our history.

This is a very interesting, easy-to-read book with a variety of antecdotes illustrating the different roles First Ladies have taken on.

                      Book Description

For a decade, Michael Ignatieff has provided eyewitness accounts and penetrating analyses from the world's battle zones. In Virtual War, he offers an analysis of the conflict in Kosovo and what it means for the future of warfare. He describes the latest phase in modern combat: war fought by remote control. In "real" war, nations are mobilized, soldiers fight and die, victories are won. In virtual war, however, there is often no formal declaration of hostilities, the combatants are strike pilots and computer programmers, the nation enlists as a TV audience, and instead of defeat and victory there is only an uncertain endgame.

Kosovo was such a virtual war, a war in which U.S. and NATO forces did the fighting but only Kosovars and Serbs did the dying. Ignatieff examines the conflict through the eyes of key players--politicians, diplomats, and generals--and through the experience of the victims, the refugees and civilians who suffered. As unrest continues in the Balkans, East Timor, and other places around the world, Ignatieff raises the troubling possibility that virtual wars, so much easier to fight, could become the way superpowers impose their will in the century ahead.

2 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding.......2005-07-20

Before going on, it is important to point out that Ignatieff is a journalist, NOT a historian. While both are required to check their facts for accuracy, the journalist permits personal opinion and argument to fill in all the holes, something to make the historian dissociate himself from friends in the press.

Let me quote two arguments in the book. "Democracies may well remain peace loving only so long as the risks of war remain real to their citizens." (p. 179) "We keep waging war, not because we want to, but because we have seeded a doubt about our seriousness which only a concerted display of violence. . can eradicate." (p. 205)

If these sentiments seem cogent, this book is for you.

The ex-Yugoslavia is past stomping grounds for Ignatieff, so the conflicts here are dear to his heart. He blames the massacres in Bosnia on "Presidential inaction" rather than on local warlords. His take on Kosovo was to prescribe immediate militarization but then to blame ministers and presidents for side-stepping legislatures and to proceed without UN mandates for this militarization. He calls the bombing of Baghdad in the Gulf War "a light show" and the bombing campaign a "video-arcade game." This idea was the darling of the press in 1991, but the notion is a direct affront to alliance pilots who needed only to look out their windows to see anti-aircraft fire trying to shoot them down. Ignatieff himself speaks of NATO pilots being forced to fly above 15,000 ft and feeling the concussions of near-misses from anti-aircraft fire. Are such realities like a "video-arcade game?" Ignatieff ignores this to paint his warped notion of a "virtual" war.

Ignatieff demanded intervention for Kosovo but then blames how it was carried out. He says the laser-guided bombing was ineffective in stopping Milosevic and so it was. He says how "virtual war" is virtual both to the people dropping the ordnance and those fleeing the bombs. To quote one pilot about Iraq's "no-fly zone" who said that the occasional anti-aircraft shot was the sole thing that reminded him he was "at war" (i.e. a "virtual" notion). Ignatieff fails to realize that once the coalition dominated the skies and knocked out dozens of SAM sites that shots from below were likely to die down. He says of "virtual warfare's victims" that the occasion is like a "spectator sport" (out of the minds and hearts of democracies), something worthy to commemorate by "buying a postcard."

On the whole Ignatieff states a case and then contradicts or refutes himself earlier or later. His rationale is consistent only in isolation. The more he enlarges on his views, the deeper the hole he digs for himself.

This book is not about technology or the way the military fights modern war (per se). It's about disliking fewer casualities, disliking sophisticated weapons, disliking the detachment of commanders and soldiers who are now engaged only at the perimeter, and so on and so on. Pyrhhus and MacArthur and all history's other commanders would gladly tell Ignatieff (who eventually tells himself) that inflicting hurt on the other army without receiving ourselves is only proper tactics. Pity Ignatieff cannot have all wars be his way.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting series of essays.......2003-04-21

I bought this book a couple of years ago but did not get around to reading it until last week, shortly after the war in Iraq ended (more or less). I was curious to see what kind of perspective it would offer not only on the Kosovo campaign but on the war in Iraq. I found it both a useful refresher on a very different battle, the 79 day air campaign against Serbia, and an interesting meditation on modern war.

The front end of this book consists of a series of snapshots of different aspects of the war, along with a couple of arguments Ignatieff has with fellow intellectuals. Several reviewers on this site wrote that they couldn't see the connection between these bits of reportage with the latter half of the book, which is an extended essay on aspects of modern, "virtual" war. I think they're perhaps not trying very hard, as the longer essay quite obviously tackles in a disciplined fashion the themes raised in the reportage--international law, the revolution in military affairs, values, societal support or the lack thereof for political decisions to move toward war.

Ignatieff is often clear-thinking. It is a bit startling to read this book, written in 1999-2000, talking about the merits of regime change in places like Iraq and Serbia/FRY. He is likewise prophetic in noting how the revolution in military affairs created an incentive for the Saddams of the world to seek a countervailing military threat in the form of chemical and biological weapons.

Where he is perhaps a bit less far-sighted is in failing to see that the precedent of a "virtual war" in Kosovo--by which he means a zero-casualty, low-cost war (for the attacking side only, of course), that is not legitimised by international law or blessed by the kind of domestic support that must be whipped up to permit a high-cost, full mobilization "real war", with real casualties on both sides--could be used to support not only human rights' causes but narrower interests.

Overall this is a book well worth reading. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in understanding what goes into a modern war.

3 out of 5 stars Not sure what to make of this.......2002-08-17

Clearly Michael Ignatieff is a gifted writer, but the theme throughout this book did not string together that well. Ignatieff had some great insights into the diplomacy building up to the Kosovo air campaign (i.e. gaining valuable insight into Holbrooke's shuttle diplomacy), but some of the observations, particularly those in the last chapter beg questioning.

The repercussions of a zero casualty conflict will reverberate throughout the US defense establishment for years to come and will certainly set benchmarks, warranted or not for future conflicts. But sacrifice in battle will be supported by the American public if the situation warrants. The war in Afghanistan bears this point out to an extent.

The dialogue between Skidelsky and Ignatieff was interesting, as was the return of Ignatieff to Belgrade to meet his longtime friend Aleksa Djilas. This dialogue portrayed the extent to which people such as Skidelsky and Djilas would like to look past the atrocities committed by the like of Milosevic, at the expense of Western intervention.

I rated the book three stars only because I didnt see the common thread throughout the book...merely a series of collected essays that may or may not have had anything to do with the subject "virtual war". THe book does add some interesting insight into Holbrooke's dealings with Milosevic, but could have delved more into discussions with Gen Clark and perhaps Lt Gen Mike Short, the Joint Forces AIr Component Commander, on the extent the "virtual war" was or was not fought both on the battlefield, in the media and in the political realm.

1 out of 5 stars Changed his tone.......2001-09-10

The important question one has to ask before picking up this book is why anyone would feel confortable relying on the opinion of a commentator whose name was so closely associated with the word "appeasement" when war and genocide were raging in Bosnia. The fact that Ignatieff was one of the equivocators who had little to chose between Karadzic and Mladic and their victims will taint him the rest of his life.
Ironicaly, he is now advertised as a human rights scholar, albeit a human rights scholar who opposed intervation to stop the Serb sponsored genocide in Bosnia, which took 250,000 lives and culminated in the masacre of Srebrenica. Ignatieff now has the good sense to change his tone, even though Kosovo presents no stronger a case for intervention than Bosnia did. This is the overiding question that Ignatieff does not answer. Why does he now support intervention within the sovereignty of a state, and yet opposed it when Bosnia was attacked in a trans-state conflict? The answer is clear, he has realized the error of his ways, a matter that Ignatieff should have the courage the face up to. It would make for an interesting book or article: the well meaning, often Serb biased Yugoslav experts who, when confronted with the worst human rights abuses seen in Europe since the Second World War, fumbled the ball miserably.
Overall, not a very engaging book, from a discredited personality, who failed the Bosnians miserably.

3 out of 5 stars War and a liberal conscience.......2001-07-04

Really a series of sketches of the Kosovo War, followed by a longer essay giving Ignatieff's thoughts on the development of warfare towards the end of the 20th century. The sketches are good, if lacking the depth of an historical work. The best is his meeting with Aleksha Djilas in Belgrade, a visit which must have caused him some trepidation. More recent events, let it be said, have borne out Ignatieff's analysis - I mean the popular revolt in Serbia, the discovery of mass graves, and the extradition of Milosevic to face trial on war crimes charges(something the author explicitly doubted would ever happen). However, the ongoing events reduce the overall value of the work, and the book must be judged by the value of the final essay. Again, this thesis on 'virtual' war - with managed presentation of events to the public, zero casualties, and high tech weaponry, seems to me to be only true so far in Western, particularly US, war-making, and even there the soldiers are reacting with horror to the prospect of replacing a large army with smaller forces armed with high-tech weaponry. The biggest killer weapon in the world is still the AK47!. The other point is the attrition in high-tech weapons - by the end of the war, NATO was running out of smart bombs. Still, thought provoking, and just about worth the price of the book, if war and politics is your sphere of interest. Otherwise, read Misha Glenny or Tim Judah for events in former Yugoslavia.

As an educator and butterfly enthusiast I whole-heartedly recommend this book. Phil Schappert has done an amazing job at providing clear, easy-to-understand information about one of the world's most amazing insects. Remember learning about butterflies when you were a kid (probably learned a lot of incorrect material!)? Well, you will see pictures of what goes on in the butterfly world from this expert. The glossary provides a fabulous list of lep terms-just awesome! No butterfly afficionado should be without this book!
