5 out of 5 stars The African Frontier.......2007-04-15

J.A. Hunter was one of a rare breed of men who moved to Africa in the late 1800's. He made the place his home, married, and raised a family whilst becoming one of the most sought-after big-game hunting guides in the world, in places like Kenya, Zaire, and Tanganyika.[be sure to read about clearing the railroad tracks of wild game] His style of writing is terse, but the first hand narrative is crisp and fresh, as if it happened yesterday.
The chapters are neatly tied into characters and events, which makes for a great book to take-along. There were many pretenders, like Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark who wanted to be in the same league as Mr. Hunter....but this is from the man himself. He is never self-promoting, and is quick to praise other hunters, a modesty that is very becoming.
I found the description of that world and it's realities irresistable: you can read all you like about the socioeconomic evolution of the Dark Continent, but this recounting has the immediacy of eyewitness truth, and from a man who made Africa his home the hard way. It is writing like this that brings history to life, and it has become too rare, in my humble opinion.
It's exciting reading, and well worth the price. Don't forget to check out his other book, Hunter, which has excellent stories and makes a good Part One to this book, which could be read as Part Two.
--->For those of you who have read Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen's books, Out of Africa and Shadows in the Grass, you will recognize some of the people mentioned. The time framework is similar (Mr. Hunter was in Africa before the Baroness, and remained long after she'd gone) --so in all a good read to 'round out a mental picture of the region at the turn of the century.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting adventure, and a great gift!.......2007-02-23

If there are any men who wouldn't enjoy this superb book, I wouldn't want to know them. The early days of East Africa as told in many instances by the men who lived them and in others, by the men who knew the men.

The story of the man who ran the crew that laid the first railroad across Africa(the "lunatic line"). The opening of Kenya. The British East African Police. The early missionaries, pioneers, white hunters. Story after story of well-written excitement will keep you reading, and bring you back for repeat readings for years to come.

Buy this book for yourself, and another for a friend. And if your friend doesn't like it...well, is he really the right kind of guy?

5 out of 5 stars Mind-blowing.......2004-08-23

I have never read a book quite like this before. It is completely devoid of political correctness so often associated with revisionist history. The narrative is sharp and cuts like a knife. This book was copyright in 1954 which affords it two advantages: 1) it pre-dates political correctness and 2) The stories are told as first hand accounts told by the old timers when they were still alive. I can't begin to tell you how exciting it is to read African history when it's told by those who were actually there when the history was the present and not the past. Whew! What a ride!

5 out of 5 stars Unexpected pleasures.......2001-03-26

This book goes well beyond Mr. Hunter's usual white hunter/safari fair. It is about a collection of characters, Arab, African, European and others who were around at the turn of the 20th century and on into the late '40's. It would probably NOT be considered politically correct, but Mr. Hunter and his co-author Daniel Mannix try their best to be unbiased in telling their tales. It begins with the story of Arab slaver Tippu Tib who had many adventures, including helping Stanley find Livingstone! A nice sketch of John Boyes (who was for a time, the king of the Kikuyu) is included for those who haven't read his own book. It finishes with Dr. L. S. B. Leakey who was as much Kikuyu as white man. I was unaware of his role in the Mau Mau troubles. In all, there are 15 tales of individuals and families who were part of the opening of Africa. As the authors say in the end: "Some were cruel, some prideful; probably a number of these pioneers were unwise, as all humans are. Many were heroes in the best sense of the word. But they all shared in a quality of courage which is the essential ingredient-at any frontier, on any continent, and at any time."

Finally, there is a nice bibliography at the end. I hope to read many of those tomes listed, if I can find them!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Adventure.......2000-08-04

A terrific read, and one of my favorite books of adventure. Includes a fascinating account of the Tsavo Lions, and great tales of heroism and hardship. I'm extremely happy to see this classic back in print. Inspiring history, unbelievable accounts of courage, greed, and patriotism. True stories of Lewis Leakey, missionaries, eccentric noblemen, safari hunters, and the founders of Hills coffee! New insight into the Victorian age of adventure. Delightfully written, funny and touching. The best written series of historical stories I've seen.

This adventure guide to the biggest state opens with a compelling statistic: to see the entirety of Alaska, you would need to visit approximately 1 million acres per day for an entire year. To explore a state so vast requires an equally comprehensive resource. Peggy Wayburn's Adventuring in Alaska delivers, providing--by region--loads of general nature and recreational- oriented information as well as quirky Alaska-specific details. Read about bush pilots and the "Bear Essentials," or consider permafrost, a chilly reminder that 80 percent of the state is covered with frozen soil. The state's rich cultural and historical past is discussed throughout the book. For each region a map is included, as well as detailed listings of transportation, lodging, wilderness activities, and parks (phone numbers and addresses are often included). --Rob McDonald

Either the author or Sierra Club should take a look at the wonderful Dorling Kindersley series of Eyewitness Travel Guides to see what a travel book can be -- alternately you might consider a Lonely Planet.

The author tells us that you could take a year to see Alaska at a rate of one million acres per day (referring to its vastness) then fails to provide many maps to the sectional chapters of the book, so you're always wondering where you are. Other things lacking are well-organized and clearly located (they exist, but are rudimentary, arbitrary, and difficult to locate) tables and charts of useful information (e.g. temperature, elevation, rainfall, snowfall.

The book could benefit from a synopsis of Alaska's regions, with similarities and differences clearly outlined so a new visitor to Alaska could easily map out which region(s) might be of particular interest.

This is one of the few books in the past 30 years that I've failed to read from cover-to-cover. Yes I've a Type A personality -- perhaps this book might appeal to someone with more patience or a strong interest in archeology and detective work -- you'll have to dig to find the information you want. (By the way, this is the first time I've felt compelled to write a review!)

5 out of 5 stars Great overall read - get to know all of Alaska........1999-02-06

This is a book not only for the adventurer, but anyone who wants to know more about Alaska. There are all kinds of historical facts and figures that you would need to search for in several reference books, without the reference book feeling. Other notes about Alaska the people living there probably don't know about. If you are into hiking, kayaking, biking, or any other mode of traveling in Alaska, Peggy Wayburn will get you there and tell you what you need, what to watch for, and who to contact in advance for more info! Adventuring in Alaska is exciting and wonderous, well worth it.

              Book Description

Much recent research has concentrated on the efficient solution of large sparse or structured linear systems using iterative methods. A language loaded with acronyms for a thousand different algorithms has developed, and it is often difficult even for specialists to identify the basic principles involved. Here is a book that focuses on the analysis of iterative methods. The author includes the most useful algorithms from a practical point of view and discusses the mathematical principles behind their derivation and analysis. Several questions are emphasized throughout: Does the method converge? If so, how fast? Is it optimal, among a certain class? If not, can it be shown to be near-optimal? The answers are presented clearly, when they are known, and remaining important open questions are laid out for further study.

From the early Soviet period, the impassioned short fiction of the great Russian-Jewish writer

One of the most powerful short-story writers of the twentieth century, Isaac Babel expressed his sense of inner conflict through disturbing tales that explored the contradictions of Russian society. Whether reflecting on anti-Semitism in stories such as “Story of My Dovecote” and “First Love,” or depicting Jewish gangsters in his native Odessa, Babel's eye for the comical laid bare the ironies of history. His masterpiece, “Red Cavalry,” set in the Soviet-Polish war, is one of the classics of modern fiction. By turns flamboyant and restrained, this collection of Babel's best-known stories vividly expresses the horrors of his age.

All I ever did was to sell beer and whiskey to our best people. All I ever did was to supply a demand that was pretty popular.

Why, the very guys that make my trade good are the ones that yell the loudest about me. Some of the leading judges use the stuff.

When I sell liquor, it's called bootlegging. When my patrons serve it on silver trays on Lake Shore Drive, it's called hospitality.

                                5 out of 5 stars Great story.......2007-04-28

This book is fantastically written. I picked it up in the book store and could not put it down. From Italy to his death, this book tells the entire story in fantastic detail. Without restating what other reviewers have already stated, I just wanted to say that this is one of the best biographies I have ever read. Meticulously researched and written, the details bring the book to life, making you feel like you are living in the 1920's, viewing everything. The book also does a good job of telling the story of the rival gangs and gangleaders in Chicago, like Bugs Moran and the Irish, as well as the contemporary politicians of the day. From the shootouts to the drug running, the bootlegging to the day-to-day of Al Capone, this book nearly reads like an action novel!

Also, having lived in Chicago for two years, I really enjoyed the references to the neighborhoods and streets.

                                Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Florida turns "Big AL" into small potatoes.......2007-01-27

this book gives an interesting aspect to the Capone story particularly in regard to Capone's Florida excursion. It seems Al went to Florida to escape the "heat" of Chicago but found the heat and humidity of Florida eventually put him in jail. The IRS investigated his holdings and possesions in Miami and Big Al found that all the rackets were already covered by business developers from Ohio. These snowbirds once they got a handle on Florida's vice industries weren't about to tolerate Capone and the attention he could bring to some of their more dubious business enterprises. In alot of works on Capone the writers make the point solely that there was moral outrage and this was enough for the state of Florida to want Capone out. However from the Schoenberg book read there is alot more involved in the reasons for the riddance of Capone. It seems his high profile was not welcome because it brought to much attention to the fishbowl and no respectable fish wants to be seen devouring the smaller ones.

5 out of 5 stars This Is How A Biography Should Be Done.......2006-08-05

Before I say much else, let me congratulate the author, Robert Schoenberg, on this work. This study of Al Capone is an elevation of the standards of biographical presentation, and I found it as enjoyable as it was informative. The word "fearless" also comes to mind, and by that I refer to Schoenberg's capacity to advocate his own carefully-formulated views on the real Al Capone, behind the enduring legend, the misunderstandings, and the deliberate misinformation long spread as character assassination.

Exhaustively-researched, Mr. Capone---the book---does everything but bring Mr. Capone---the man---from his time into ours. Capone was comparatively no monster, nor was he a saint. He was no more ruthless than circumstances in his business ever required him to be, and was by degrees shrewd, wise, cautious, generous, fun-loving, tough, pious, forgiving, sadistic, kind, and patriotic. Capone's philanthropy has never received the coverage it deserves, and his philandering has been too focused upon. Capone, let's not forget to mention here, made his name and rose to power on the strength of his talents as a peacemaker among the warring ethnic gangs of the east coast. A deft negotiator who could be trusted to deal fairly with all sides and to keep his word when given, Capone had far more friends than enemies in the underworld, and it was the strength of these alliances that he drew upon in the 1920's when he made his move to become the top power-broker in the city of Chicago: not the most powerful underworld figure, THEE most powerful person in America's second-city.

Capone was a larger than life figure, and a man with as many weaknesses as talents. Foremost among his weak points was his all-possessing vanity. This vanity drove him to revel in the publicity and fame he both intentionally created and magnified via his extensive influence on the Chicago press. (It's said by 1930 there wasn't a Chicago newsman worth his salt who hadn't had dinner with Al Capone.) This desire for the spotlight put Capone into international headlines, and made him the focus of seemingly every legitimate law enforcement agent with any ambition. Schoenberg's emphasis on the role played by members of the Treasury Department, men unknown today in comparison to the self-promoting Elliot Ness, a being every bit as obsessed with his own celebrity as was his foe Al Capone, is especially refreshing.

Schoenberg portrays Capone's pragmatism and realistic attitude about the conviction for tax evasion that eventually sent him to prison, first in Georgia, later in Alcatraz. Beneath his bravado ("I plan to spend a third of my sentence asleep.") Capone made the best of the bitter hand he was dealt. We come in the last chapters to meet the most surprising incarnation of "Scarface Al" Capone, that of Capone the model inmate, a man too learned in hard wisdom to make trouble for himself among either the prison population, or those who governed it. Finally we see the sad final years of the one-time boss of Chicago, as he wastes away on a modest Florida estate, a victim of cardiac troubles and neurosyphilis. One final myth, that Capone's phobic reaction to needles prevented his receiving treatment for syphilis, is exploded, and the truth revealed at last: this being that because of America's involvement in the Second World War the penicillin used in the treatment of syphilis was virtually impossible to attain on the homefront, even for the dying, and even for a legend like Al Capone.

Mr. Capone is among the best examples of biography I've ever read, and should be studied for what it brings to the field of research, as well as for its presentation of an oft-mythologized man. Easily a five-star book that I'd recommend without question. It's not only great, it's good.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Schoenberg Does Mr. Capone Right!.......2003-05-31

Building and expanding upon the solid foundation previously laid by Pasley and Kobler and correcting old errors, and guided by the likes of top-notch Capone experts Mark Levell and Bill Balsamo, Schoenberg has crafted one of the best Capone biographies to date, far superior to Bergreen's ludicrous fluff. The author puts perhaps too much faith in the questionable testimony of "Born Again" hoodlum George Meyer but that is abbreviated and an almost a minor aside in this comprehensive, well-researched bio of America's all-time greatest gangster.

                                5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2001-08-04

This is THE definitive biography of the world's most famous gangster. The book is exceptionally well-written, able to satisfy anyone from a casual layman to an organized crime expert. Schoenberg walks us through Capone's life, showing us why he did what he did and avoiding getting caught up in the usual myths surrounding him. The author's notes at the end of the book are extremely helpful. Most of all, Schoenberg gets almost all the dates and facts right when dealing with the events surrouning Capone's life. While I personally disagree with his take on the St. Valentine's Day Massacre, he presents this event and others like it in such a precise manner one cannot help but say positive things. Anybody seeking information about Al Capone should look no further than Mr. Capone. A few other books about him have been published in the last ten years, specifically one by Laurence Bergreen, which is a far worse book and yet has received more publicity the Schoenberg's opus. All others should be ignored. Mr. Capone is the best book ever written about Al Capone.

                                      Book Description

Although conscientious objection is a long-standing phenomenon, it has only recently become a major factor affecting armed forces and society. The only comprehensive, comparative scholarly study of conscientious objection to military service, this book examines the history of the practice in the Western world and state policies that have grown up in response to it. It shows how the contemporary refusal to bear arms is likely to be secular and widespread rather than religious and marginal, now including service people (as seen in the 1991 War in the Persian Gulf) as well as conscription resisters. No account of civil-military relations or peace movements in advanced industrial countries is complete without reference to conscientious objection, and this book will be the standard text on the subject.

                                          Book Description

While the story of history may be most often defined through its winners, long forgotten, "defeated" movements and their ideals sometimes reemerge with renewed popularity, offering perhaps a better glimpse into society's future. So argues this unique collection, which gathers reflections by scholars and activists that reconsider the historical impact of the Black Panther Party (BPP)-the most significant revolutionary organization in the US in the later 20th century. Compared with more entrenched organizations like the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) or the NAACP, the 14-year existence of the Black Panther Party seems brief indeed. Yet the BBP gave organizational expression to a tendency in the revolutionary movement that long predated it-the idea that the entire system is corrupt and needs to be reconstructed. Dozens of groups dedicated to revolutionary change appeared in the US in the 1960s, but only the BPP was able to develop a mass following and appeal to a broad constituency.
These articles offer a fresh and realistic recounting of the Party's tumultuous history and its reverberations through modern politics, including Chicano movements, international labor movements, and the campaign to free Mumia Abu Jumal. Counterbalancing hypercritical attacks and fawning glorifications, this anthology offers a more reasoned perspective and features previously silenced voices.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-03-21

A "must have", if you will, to those who are intrested in the history of the Black Panthers. The articles written by several authors covers the whole range of things associated with the Panthers and provides insights and information that make this book essential to your education.

                                          5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-02-08

You can really gain a lot of factual/historical background and intellectual insight into the Black Panthers from this collection of essays. Really a great resource for anyone who cares about the movement, is interested in the reality of what we broadly call the "civil rights movement" and the era in which the Panthers evolved, anyone interested in the complex struggles of a radical group, anyone interested in government surveillance and covert attacks, etc. Well, lots of stuff to get you thinking.

Most recommended for the reader with some background in the Panthers and the historical context in general, but approachable without a lot of specialized knowledge.

I read this book and found it to be a completely enjoyable COMEDY. It is hilarious. This is the unbelievably unreasonable anti-earth, anti-nature point of view of the logging, mining, fishing, land development and other destructive "resource" industries. It is written by a staunch Christian zealot. Just check out his website. Ron Arnold does not hide the fact he believes humans have every right to "extract" the heck out of the planet because it is "our god-given right" according to Genesis. Read and weep, gentle earth treaders, but you get to know the mindset of the other side pretty well.
Please note: a laudatory review here is by Eureka, CA resource industry lawyer Andy Stunich. For the record, and you can easily Google this or check out the archives of the local newspapers (Times-Standard, the right-wing Eureka Reporter, also the lefty North Coast Journal), Mr. Stunich represents tree climber Eric Schatz who is hired by logging companies to "extract" earth defenders from ancient growth redwoods. Need I say more?

Arnold provides a valuable detailed account of how eco-terrorism got its foothold in the United States and to what end some environmental vigilantes are willing to go to affect social change. It is only by fully understanding what drives eco-terrorism that we as a community can expect to prevent the considerable social and economic harm caused when eco-terrorists take the law into their own hands.

In dealing with radical environmentalist, I felt this book was right on. I have had the pleasure of dealing with their actions myself and this book explained my experiences to a T. The theory behind the radical enviros actions is compassionately explained in Mr. Arnolds analysis of them. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever been terrorized by or curious about the true objectives of the movement.

The book is a litany of jaded corporate arguments for the continued destruction of nature so that a few people can get richer. To be read only in the same way you watch a bad B-movie -- for the unintentional laughs. The book's inability to understand social activism (not to mention concepts like justice) would have made it a best-seller in Czarist Russia.

This book from Free Enterprise, gee I wonder what their agenda is? use's the same language that the violent hate group The Sahara Club use's, and who the FBI quotes in their press releases, to justify the terrorization & chemical torture of young activists. Amazon a company based in Seattle which has it's own experience with pepper spray sadists would link this filth with a noble title like Ecodefense.
