5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2000-04-02

Tom Brown's books are all very good including this one. It is about Tom having grown up by an old Apache named Grandfather. Grandfather teaches him many skills of the wilderness - both physical and spiritual. It is a great book and ties in to Tom's whole series of books. I encourage you to read them. They will give you a new awareness on life that you never thought of before.

      Book Description

The sun-splashed countries of the Mediterranean are shown as they have never been seen before.

Jeffrey Becom avoids the familiar tourist attractions, focusing instead on the houses of farmers and fishermen, exploring the details of an amazingly varied vernacular architecture. Jeffrey Becom is a traveler in search of color, and he has found a bounty of it in the intimate corners of Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and Greece. Complementing the dazzling images is Becom's graceful and informative guide through the regions he has photographed.

I was expecting a beautiful book of photos full of inspiring mediterranean colours. This book had a lot of text and wasn't what I expected. Might be interesting but haven't got the time to read it.

2 out of 5 stars nice -but not what I was looking for........2002-03-19

I bought this book looking for a lush picture book of inspiring photos of mediterranean homes. It is not. Although the photography is nice, it is primarily of colourful buildings abroad.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous book full of color!.......2000-12-05

Wonderful book and great writing. Beautiful images of architecture, color and life. I highly reccomend. A must have for anyone who has traveled there or for anyone who dreams of doing so. Jeffrey Becom's photographs are a feast for the eyes and his tales are engrossing. One must also look at his other book Maya Color - stunning as well!

5 out of 5 stars A New Way to Look at Color and Arcitecture.......2000-11-09

This book is about Architecture, Color, and how we see the world. It's not about how to be a tourist in the Mediterranean. Unless, of course, you would like to be a tourist who really "sees" what is in front of your eyes when you walk down that picturesque village street. Jeffrey Becom has a killer eye. His camera isolates a detail from our normal panoramic vision of a building or a street scene. When we contemplate this detail our sense of beauty, aesthetic organization, and how the world works is expanded. His capability to see these details while wandering the countries bordering the Mediterranean allows us normal humans a greater appreciation of the sensibilities of work-a-day Mediterannean peoples. The contemplation of Jeffrey Becom's work also inevitably causes us to look at our own world differently. I see things now when I walk down the street that I didn't see before I looked at Becom's work.

      4 out of 5 stars Jeffrey's photograph's are stunning!.......1996-09-01

Jeffrey's migration from architecht to painter now photographer has imbued his work with a unique sensibility. As a Becom collector Ihave come to appreciate the quality of his eye and the intensity of the Cibrachrome process of printing. I was quite delighted with Jeffrey's ability to write as well; though readers should know that this is primarily a photography book written by a photographer and his wife. He has several galleries around the world that show his work, and though expensive, his work is worth the price! I expectantly await his next book on similar topic, but location of South America. Long Live Jeffrey Becom

            Book Description

Using a geometric perspective, Protein Geometry, Classification, Topology, and Symmetry reviews and analyzes the structural principals of proteins with the goal of revealing the underlying regularities in their construction. It also reviews computer methods for structure analysis and the automatic comparison and classification of these structures with an analysis of the statistical significance of comparing different shapes. Following an analysis of the current state of protein classification, the authors explore more abstract geometric and topological representations, including the occurrence of knotted topologies. The book concludes with a consideration of the origin of higher-level symmetries in protein structure. The authors focus on simple geometric methods that are deterministic rather than probabilistic and on the more abstract simplifications of protein structure that allow a better understanding of the overall fold of the structure. Most of the methods described in this book have corresponding computer programs. These can be found (as C source code) at the ftp site of the Division of Mathematical Biology at the National Institute for Medical Research. This collection of ideas contains pedagogical material that make it ideal for post-graduate courses as well as new ideas and results essential for researchers investigating protein structures.

                Book Description

Covering topics and issues usually left untouched by standard introductory texts, this book provides a stepping stone to better, more portable and more efficient Fortran programming. It illustrates, in a clear and coherent style, some of the more advanced techniques and facilities of the language, showing how it can be used more effectively to solve practical problems involving heavy numerical computation. For programmers and students with a basic working knowledge of Fortran, the book provides an under-one-cover introduction to the principles and practice of scientific and numerical computing—from the basics of programming techniques and style and a general discussion of mathematical software, to a detailed examination of the difficult issues which are key to more efficient Fortran programming. A thorough treatment of the subject of memory management (perhaps one of the most important determining factors for program efficiency) includes the topics of cache and paging, as well as extensive references to linear algebra, the BLAS and LAPACK. Motivated by practical programming issues rather than traditional language tuition, the book is enhanced throughout by many useful examples, with exercises and a collection of fully worked solutions adding breadth. It concludes with a brief description of the new standard, Fortran90, and an overview of High Performance Fortran, laying the foundations for further exploration of the potential of this important and successful language.

4 out of 5 stars Lets crunch some numbers.......2000-06-20

A book that shows the whole field well. It goes beyond the tutorial books and has handy source code for some practical programs you should run. It also covers resources. I had my school library buy a copy after reading the authors' post on Usenet about the book in comp.lang.fortran. But with computers at home who can access Fortran?

5 out of 5 stars Fortran is dead and this book can not revive it.......1998-07-11

On the verge of the 21st century, FORTRAN as a language is practically dead, since it does not offer modern programming facilities and features commonly found in newer languages.

With the user base declining in quantity and quality (Misha Kagalenko sets a vivid example of the decline in quality), new books on Fortran, especially those that provide essentially no new information to the readers, are almost doomed to fail.

To expound a little more on the example of Kagalenko, his remarks about relative performance of FORTRAN compared to C++ show outstanding ignorance about the state of contemporary computing.

                4 out of 5 stars Philly Noir.......2005-08-23

This is was my second Goodis movel (see Blonde on Streetcorner). I'm really attracted to this genre (which I don't consider noir as much as working class fiction). And being a Philly kinda guy, I realize that Goodis' books are set in a fictional Philadelphia. The street names have been changed but this book probably takes place down in the Southwark and Two Street section (now more & more gentrified) when it was the home of dockworkers and poor working class. Praise for the working class existentialism of the anti-heros who endure their fate (freedom that Sartre might question as authentic freedom, yet his notion that we are "condemed to be free" is the essential notion even for our guy Kerrigan who always seems to be on the edge of escaping his environs). I think this book was much more literary than "Blonde" in its reach for descriptive symbolism. Goodis is always dealing with stock characters and their cliches, but then, do we really expect any other kind of realism from pulp fiction?

3 out of 5 stars gritty story, but what about that ending?!?.......2002-12-30

David Goodis is the champion of the down-and-outs, druggies, boozers and misfits. In 'The Moon in the Gutter' we have an interesting story about a stevedore (dock worker) and his utterly miserable existence. He has difficulty in coming to grips with the grisly death of his sister, his home life is a disaster, and his future looks bleak. But then he meets a blonde from the other side of the tracks and ....

While I won't give any spoilers here let me just say I felt very let down by the ending of this novel. David Goodis brings the reader into the life of this poor soul and shows us his world without compassion. Towards the end the tension builds (..again no spoilers) but the author fails miserably in tying it all together at the end. Very disappointing.

Bottom line: a missed opportunity by Goodis. Intriguing, but best left to Goodis fans only.

                5 out of 5 stars Hamsun Noir.......1999-10-12

This guy is the Knut Hamsun of Noir. Grit, realism served up filthy-delphia style. His characters speak in the harsh dialect of wasted lives, guts, soul and all other essentials of the True Predecessor of Bukow, Selby, Fante, and Leonard Gardner...the beauty of ugliness is the religion of Goodis and his brash honesty and no-holds barred grappling prose style make him one of the greats.

2 out of 5 stars One of Goodis's Lesser Efforts.......1999-03-20

Goodis's second-tier novels aren't really stories so much as they are examinations of his morbid psychology. Stay away from this one, Cassidy's Girl, and The Blonde on the Street Corner.

5 out of 5 stars Goodis is a really good mystery writer.......1999-01-01

Seven months ago, Bill Kerrigan's beloved sister committed suicide rather than lives with the memory of the assault on her body by an unknown assailant. Bill remains in shock, visiting the alley off of Philadelphia's Vernon Street where his sibling died.

After spending some time in the alley, for some reason known only to him, Bill decides he needs a beer so he goes to the nearby Dugan's Den bar. At the dive, Bill meets Newton Channing, a slumming wealthy uptowner. When Newton's classy sister Loretta comes to take him home, an immediate bond forms between her and Bill. However, he is a stevedore, residing in the slums while she is class personified. Even if Bill can put aside his ghastly obsession of finding the culprit behind his sister's death, this couple has no chance of making it.

THE MOON IN THE GUTTER is a reprint of a great urban Noir. The characterization is deep and very intriguing because of David Goodis' insight into the Vernon Street dwellers. The story line is haunting as its serves up to prove that the author was exceptionally good at his craft. Readers who give this novel a chance will search the second hhandbook stores for more works by Mr. Goodis.

The iconography of Robert Lentz has always pushed the margins and this book would be valuable for the illustrations alone, any one of which could serve as a spiritual focus for meditation. The brief stories of each subject invite the reader to delve further into that person's life and work.
Gateley's longer reflections -- interspersed throughout the book -- explore some of the people represented here more fully and open up the complexity of the person in ways that the normal biographies of saints often avoid.
As a spiritual director, I find this an invaluable book as it reminds us all that Christ is found on the margins of life and in the witness of those who live on the margins, often unnoticed by the news media or those in the centers of power and prestige. I would enjoy using this book with spiritual friends, but also with young people (14 - 25) who seem to yearn for stories of those who made a difference in spite of poverty, lack of education, disease, voicelessness, or age.

5 out of 5 stars A living tradition of holy women and men.......2003-06-04

This handsome book can be enjoyed in diverse ways: meditating on Lentz' beautiful contemporary icons or pondering the penetrating and provocative reflections by Edwina Gateley following each of the eight groups of icons. Subjects of the icons range from Christ of the Desert to Black Elk, from the Syro-Phoenician woman to Cardinal Bernadine of Chicago, from Julian of Norwich to Cesar Chavez, and from St. Brigid to Michal Judge, OFM. Grouped under such headings as Founders, Prophets, Outcasts, Holy Fools, Mystics, and Artists, the 41 icons include such surprising subjects as Einstein and Tolkien, along with more traditional saints. The visual appeal alone of this book makes it a valuable addition to any library, but the inclusion of Lentz' texts and Gateley's essays more than doubles its worth as a holy book to be treas-ured.

                    Book Description

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has an uneasy relationship with its Hispanic constituency. Machado probes the history of this tension by examining the Disciples' interaction with Hispanics in Texas around the turn of the 20th century. The Church's inability to develop significant ties with Hispanics resulted in the creation of a small church that exists on both the geographical and denominational margins of the Christian Church.

This book traces the story of the shaping of one's man's consciousness from a child's grasp of his family's immigrant faith, with its deep reverence for the priesthood, to an ever-deepening sense of family and priestly service that extends to the entire body of Christ.

The author was a college professor of mine too many years ago and reading this book about his relationship with the "socially disadvantaged" brought back memories of Fr. Pete and how he gave so much of himself to those who needed help desperately. He's still giving. I consider it a profound look at Christian Charity from a first person perspective. I was deeply moved.

                                Book Description

The Ottoman Turkish Empire was one of the leading protagonists of World War I, and the stolid courage of the individual Ottoman soldier was recognised by all. Yet the army in which he served is, like the Ottoman empire itself, generally little understood. Over the four years of the Great War, the Ottoman Army, Navy and two tiny air services fought on five major fronts, as well as seeing troops serve in many other war zones. This title takes a close look at the organisation, uniforms and equipment of the Ottoman Army during this period, and dispels the numerous myths that have surrounded the examinations of its forces at this time. Navy, Air, auxiliary and allied forces are also covered.

For modelers, this book is a great source on all details about the not-much-written-about turkish army. As usual, it has plenty of black and white photos as well as eight center color plates, with complete explanations at the end.

For a little bit more of history on the Turkish army, I'd suggest adding another Osprey book: GALLIPOLI 1915.

                                Book Description

When A.P.J. Abdul Kalam wrote India 2020: A Vision for the New Millennium with Y.S. Rajan in 1998, little did they expect the magnitude of the response they would get. The idea that India could actually be a developed nation in a short time rather than remain condemned to a subsistence diet of marginal improvements and promises struck a chord among readers. The book continues to be a bestseller.

Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power Within India goes the logical next step and examines why, given all our skills, resources and talents, we, so obviously capable of being the best, settle so often for the worst. What is it that we as a nation are missing? For at the heart of Ignited Minds is an irresistible premise: the people of a nation have the power, by dint of hard work, to realize their dream of a truly good life.

Kalam offers no formulaic prescription in Ignited Minds. Instead, he takes up different issues and themes that struck him on his pilgrimage around the country as he met thousands of school children, teachers, scientists and saints and seers in the course of two years: the necessity for a patriotism that transcends religion and politics; for role models who point out the path to take; and for confidence in ourselves and in our strengths.

Who was he to write on so large a theme, he wondered as he started writing this book. But at the end, Kalam's humility notwithstanding, this may well prove to be the book that motivates us to get back on the winning track and unleash the energy within a nation that hasn't allowed itself full rein.

Dr.Kalam has written a very inspiring book. He gives examples of great Indian scientists, right back from Aryabhata to the Nobel Laureate Prof.S.Chandrasekar and motivates young Indians to seek Knowledge to make India the great country she deserves to be.

Ignited Minds: Unleashing the Power within India examines the reasons and causes for Indians capable of being the best, settle so often for the worst. What can make the great nations as India to truly prove them selves?
This book is great book and President. Kalam is good author but it fails to touch the soul of reader. Many times reader feels that this book is talking for long but that could have been said by using little words and concise phrases. Even though I believe that this is must read book for every Indian school going kids. As said this is truly good book and will fire the minds of the young Indian, who are the future of India.

A thought provoking and well written book by the current President of India is a gem of a book. A must read for all Indians young or old. It truely reflects the mood of the young Indians who want to see the true power of India be unleashed. Share Dr. Kalam's dream of a developed India by 2020. Understand the part we commoners need to play to chip in with our insignificant though valuable contribution to the great task we have at our hands.
                                Very inspiring. Highly recommended!!

This book is a powerful message to all Indians especially the youth. Dr Kalam's vision of a developed India, his stress on technological and scientific engines to propel us into a higher orbit in the new millennium is well known. In this book, Dr Kalam is on mission mode - to ignite the passion in the minds of our children to achieve this vision. His numerous interactions with school children, political leaders, saints, scholars and industrialists have a common theme- India can do it.

India is a land of cultural and religious diversity and the world's largest democracy. The challenge is to harness this diversity and channelise our energies in nation building. Great leaders of all religions seem to be in perfect agreement on this. I was moved by an example Dr Kalam has cited in this book. In the southern Indian town of Kanchipuram, there exist a mosque and a Hindu mutt side by side. When there was a move to shift the mosque further away to reduce congestion , the Hindu saint vehemently protested - "In fact , when at 4:30 AM the call for namaz comes from the mosque, it acts as a wake-up call for my divine duties". This is the message the nation needs most at this moment.

This book to some extent repeats from "Wings of Fire" and "India 2020". But to me it is not repetition, but reinforcement. The challenge to remove poverty by 2010 and achieve the status of a developed nation by 2020 is no simple task. This is a call to all Indians to join forces in this great mission.

On 30 September 2001, Dr Kalam narrowly escaped unhurt in a helicopter crash. This event seems to have had a strong impact on his mind , resulting in greater vigor and resolve to accomplish his mission . God has been kind to him and to us the citizens of India, in saving this noble man and assigning him the responsibility to the highest office of this country.

                                And thoughts result in action."

APJ Abdul Kalam, is a spokesperson for the collective desires of the people of India. In this simple book, he writes in lucid words, what Indians want for their country.

This small book puts the goal of a developed India in the hearts and minds of its people.

APJ Abdul Kalam, now the President of India is a living example that decent, honest, people can still suceed. His books are a refreshing read to any Indian.

4 out of 5 stars A Timely Warning against Transnational Legal Standards.......2007-08-08

Without a doubt, Rabkin's book represents a timely addition to an important debate. The perspective he brings to bear, including a healthy skepticism about the questionable normative commitments underlying appeals to transnational legal standards and a hard-nosed look at the actual efficacy of efforts to realize "global governance," is provocative and perhaps underemphasized.

At the same time, the book often lacks the analytical rigor that would make it a more serious challenge to advocates of global governance. At bottom, the book's argument turns on the claim that the normative commitments Rabkin holds dear (limited government, individual autonomy, and consent-based politics) are fundamentally incompatible with a commitment to transnational legal codes, defined and enforced by supranational organizations. Yet this central part of the argument is largely asserted rather than being established through careful arguments. Moreover, for readers familiar with the insights of modern political science, in particular public-choice theory, Rabkin's almost mystical faith in the ability of national political systems (specifically national legislatures) to realize "the public good" is likely to be perplexing. Although he surely identifies important deficiencies in transnational legal institutions as they currently exist, he largely glosses over similar inadequacies at the domestic level that are likely to introduce the same kinds of distortions that he fears at the international level (for example, the disproportionate influence of "elites" or special-interest minorities).

Rabkin also tends to lump together arguments and positions that are more nuanced and differentiated than he acknowledges. The book sometimes descends into mere polemical non sequiturs. For example, after recounting the Srebrenica massacre of 1995, in which Serb forces slaughtered more than eight thousand Bosnian Muslims while Dutch United Nations peacekeepers did nothing to intervene, Rabkin offers the following "explanation" for the actions of the Dutch soldiers: "It should not have been very surprising. In 1940, the Dutch relied on international law for their protection and were overrun by Germany in a matter of hours. A Dutch resistance movement did not develop for several years--well after the Dutch allowed their Jewish fellow citizens to be rounded up for extermination. Were the Dutch now going to take risks for people on the other side of Europe?" (p.180).

In short, LAW WITHOUT NATIONS deals with a significant topic that is only likely to grow in importance as increasing global economic and political interdependencies give rise to calls for an expanded role for transnational governance. Rabkin's plea for the importance of sovereign nation-states in protecting the values of individual liberty and autonomy that are the hallmark of the Western political tradition is provocative. Although the book does not present the strongest case that can be made for its position, its arguments should be taken seriously by those who clamor for supranational governance.

1 out of 5 stars the paranoid style in american politics..........2006-07-10

Europe is bad, America is good, Number One , best of the world, uniquely great...Well, that is all there is to it here. This book is a constant insult to the intelligence of the reader, whether he be conservative or liberal, given the absurd violence and anger of the tone. Interestingly enough however, as others have pointed out, Rabkin's true haunting fear is not about the European Union, but rather American progressives willing to claim American ideals for the cause of peace and justice.

5 out of 5 stars A argument that America must stay true to its decisions.......2004-09-10

The Case For Sovereignty: Why The World Should Welcome American Independence by Jeremy A. Rabkin (Professor, Department of Government, Cornell University) is a forceful argument that America must stay true to its decisions first and the will of other nations such as European countries and even international law. Claiming that allowing international law to hold priority over the Constitution would be fundamentally at odds with American democracy, using European derision of America's will to invade Iraq under President George W. Bush as an example of a supposed attempt to restrict American sovereignty, The Case For Sovereignty explores the lessons of history to create a detailed, well-researched, exhortively argued an unapologetic manifesto for daring to remain at international odds as a nation.
