"When Dr. Sears can't help, the lilaguide can."-San Francisco Magazine
"A great resource that's long overdue."-SF Weekly
"The definitive owner's manual for families with babies and toddlers."-San Francisco Downtown Magazine
Like they say, everything changes when you have a baby. That's why the lilaguide has become the essential item on every new parent's checklist.
Most parents wish their baby came with some sort of user-friendly handbook. Luckily, babies come with a lot of excellent word-of-mouth advice from other parents and friends. In fact, we found that nearly every parent out there has a great piece of child-rearing advice, like which baby store is the most helpful, or which restaurant tolerates strained carrots on the floor. Someone, we thought, should write this stuff down. And that's how, please pardon the pun, the lilaguide was born. Our guides are literally written by parents for parents, through thousands of volunteer surveys. It's what happens when someone writes down all the parental wisdom, organizes it, calculates it and presents it in an easy-to-use format.
Apparently a lot of other new parents appreciate the inside scoop provided by the lilaguide, because our little green-striped books are quickly becoming a staple item in diaper bags across the country. You'll find us in bookstores, toy stores, gift stores and maternity wards. Not to mention at a whole lot of baby showers. We're rapidly expanding into major metro markets throughout the country, making the lilaguide the only national guide of its kind.

Disappointed.......2007-08-08
This book is great if you haven't had your baby yet. I bought it when my baby was 9 months old. Most of the information was useless by then (lots of maternity and infant info).
Book Description
At the outbreak of the Civil War, North and South quickly saw the need to develop the latest technology in naval warfare, the ironclad ship. After a year-long scramble to finish first, in a race filled with intrigue and second guessing, blundering and genius, the two ships -- the
Monitor and the
Merrimack -- after a four-hour battle, ended the three-thousand-year tradition of wooden men-of-war and ushered in "the reign of iron."
In the first major work on the subject in thirty-five years, novelist, historian, and tall-ship sailor James L. Nelson, acclaimed author of the Brethren of the Coast trilogy, brilliantly recounts the story of these magnificent ships, the men who built and fought them, and the extraordinary battle that made them legend.
Customer Reviews:
Fine scholorship plus talented writing equals a great book........2006-10-19
Been a longtime civil war buff and recently my attention has turned to the naval side of the war and specificly ironclads. This one covering the battle of the Monitor and the Virginia is easily the best book on the topic I have read so far.
What really makes this one stand out is not just the writing or the scholorship, but the combination of the two. So often civil war history is written by scholors who know their facts but don't always have the best writing talents. In this case however James Nelson is an established author having written a number of fictional titles in the historical naval genre. Here however Nelson shows that his talents as a scholor rival his talents as an author. The result is a book of history that reads like a novel.
The book itself starts off with a bang literally as Nelson chronicles the Virginia's opening attacks on the Congress and Cumberland. From there we go back to the beginning and explore the long and winding roads both the Monitor and Virginia took to reach their epic confrontation. It's a facinationg trip as those in charge try and grapple with this new technology.
The story of the Monitor is especially interesting as it's visionary designer John Ericsson fights the doubters who don't even believe his ship will float let alone defeat the Virginia.
I do hope in the future that James Nelson writes more in the Civil War genre as this book is a must read for anyone interested in ironclads and leaves the reader wanting more.
In Depth and Readable.......2005-06-23
Reign of Iron is how history should be written. The detail is terrific, every aspect of the building and operations of these ironclads is covered, in greater depth than in any of the other accounts I have read. Nelson, incidentally, discusses at length why the ship was still called Merrimack even after the Confederates had her, and goes into a lot of detail concerning her names. I have to guess the other reviewer has not read the book. William Davis's Battle of the First Ironclads is also incorrectly named.
Anyone who loves maritime history or Civil War history should read this book! I love Nelson's novels, but this makes me hope he will write more history too.
monitor and merrimack?????.......2005-06-03
the monitor and merrimack were both union ships.....why were they fighting each other???? i know the winners write the history books, but at the time, this fight was between the monitor and the virginia(formerly the merrimack).....
One of the finest history books I have read.......2004-12-18
James L. Nelson put his considerable writing skills of naval fiction into creating this outstanding historical work. Most history is dry reading, but this book reads like an excellent novel. Nelson covers the political turmoil and indecision at the outset of the Civil War and the failure of the incompetent commander of the Norfolk/Gosport naval facilities to destroy military stores and the Merrimack. The Confederates captured large numbers of cannon and tons of ordinance as well as the repairable Merrimack and a good dry-dock. When it was discovered that the Merrimack had been raised and the Confederates were converting it to an iron-clad, the Union panic began. It was hard to get the Monitor built because the old-school naval commanders did not like to innovate. Finally, the design of Swede John Ericsson was accepted, but to get the ship built, Ericsson mostly financed the construction with his own money.
In early March 1862 the Monitor was completed and sent to deal with the Merrimack (CSS Virginia), but she almost sank in rough seas and was barely saved. Meanwhile, a day before the Monitor arrived, the Merrimack had destroyed to Union frigates, the Cumberland and the Congress. It was a fierce battle but the wooden ships in the area could do nothing but run or be destroyed. The only thing keeping the Merrimack from escaping were large caliber cannon on forts in the area that could deliver plunging fire. On the 9th of March, the Monitor and Merrimack dueled for several hours with little damage to each other, few casualties, and no clear winner, but the Monitor and the forts were enough to keep the Merrimack bottled-up. The Confederates wanted to move the Merrimack to Richmond, but the waterways were too shallow, so they blew her up. The Monitor remained on station for several weeks before being sent to Charleston. On the trip, she again encountered heavy seas and sank. What a stupid waste.
What I found most interesting about this famous engagement was the weapons used by the ships. At times the ships were almost touching and a point-blank range, neither ship could deliver a crippling blow. Nelson reveals that the Merrimack was using explosive shells, which are very destructive when hitting wooden ships, but of no penetrating power when exploding against armor. The Monitor had large caliber cannon firing solid shot which should have been able to penetrate the sloping armor of the Merrimack. But the Monitor's cannon were restricted to using half powder charges. Using full charges would have enabled the Monitor's solid shot to penetrate the Merrimack's armor. One would think that after seeing the shots bouncing off the Monitor, someone would have had enough sense to increase the powder charges.
The Legend Comes Alive.......2004-12-01
I first found James Nelson's writing when I was given "Glory in the Name" as a Christmas gift last year. It was one of the more unusual books I had read about the Civil War as it dealt with the Confederate Navy and was told from their point of view in a most riveting fashion. Since reading that book I have read all of Nelson's writings concerning Thomas Marlowe and his adventures in piracy and Isaac Biddlecomb and his adventures in the Revolutionary War, eight books in all. I have also read "The Only Life That Mattered" which involved a pirate legend and was highly entertaining.
Reign of Iron is Nelson's first venture into non-fiction and I can assure you that nothing suffers with the change. Exhaustively researched, Nelson brings back to life the days when the navies of the two waring factions were about to move from the days of wood to the reign of iron.
It is an important story, but one that was relegated to a supporting role in the overal panorama of the War Between the States. Now, Nelson has brought it forward, front and center and explained in detail the trials and tribulations that ushered in this dramatic change in how control of the oceans of the world evolved.
Most of us grew up with some knowledge of The Monitor and The Merrimac, but as Nelson explains, our general knowledge was superficial and usually wrong. This is the true story and it is an important one. Fans of this author will not be disappointed.

Book Description
From the unstoppable advance of Napoleon's army to the most recent of the assassination attempts on the Pope, Michel de Nostradamus's predictions are more widespread and well-known than those of any other prophet. Starting at the conflict between Islam and Western societies, this inquiry into his writings utilizes the method of contextual interpretation to verify and explain the accountability of Nostradamus's prophecies and how to interpret them in these tense years following the 2001 attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. The beginning of World War III and the ascension of a new Supreme Pontiff to the throne of Rome are among the interpretations provided in this one-of-a-kind opportunity to approach Nostradamus's prophecies from a novel, clear, and updated point of view.

A good book for skeptics.......2002-03-24
Peter Medawar was once asked by a Customs official when he landed in USA "Do you intend to overthrow the Constitution of the United States of America?". To which he replied that he did not intend to do so, and he hoped that he would not do so by accident.
This irreverent tone is apparent in several of the essays in this collection, notably in his review of Teilhard de Chardin's "The Phenomenon of Man" and Koestler's "The Act of Creation". He had a highly skeptical attitude to pretence of all kinds, and was not hesitant to speak out.
Medawar won a Nobel Prize for medicine and he took a broad view on science and its relation to society. Everyone with an interest in science, especially biological science, will find many items of interest in this collection.

A master of science and English prose.......2002-02-24
This is a superb collection of essays by a Nobel Prizewinner in medicine who was also one of the best popular writers on science in recent times. Pluto's Republic contains the essays in two previous collections, The Art of the Soluble and The Hope of Progress, both currently out of print. It also contains essays on induction and intuition in scientific thought, several pieces not previously collected in book form and some new items. The contents range far and wide, including some vigorous polemics with Arthur Koestler following Medawar's review of The Act of Creation, comments on some recent books on the state of the art in cancer research and an essay on 'type A' behaviour and heart disease.
Medawar has forthright views on the use of technology to improve the world. He also considers that the traditional division of "pure" and "applied" science is unhelpful, probably deriving from the same perverse cast of mind that created the "romantic versus rational" dichotomy between imaginative and critical thinking, allied with the old Anglo-Saxon class distinction between science (for amateur "gentlemen") and technology (for grubby professional "players"). The traditional view, preserved jealously by pure scientists, is that researchers of high caliber should be allowed to follow their interests wherever they will, either in the belief that this is what the universities and the life of the mind are all about, or in the confident expectation that eventually fundamental work will pay off at the practical level. Medawar concedes
"This procedure works; that is, it works sometimes, and it may be the best we can do, but might not the converse approach be equally effective, given equal talent? That is, to start with a concrete problem, but then to allow the research to open out in the direction of greater generality...I can see no reason why this approach if it were to be attempted by persons of the same ability, should not work just as well as its more conventional counterpart. Research done in this style is always in focus, and those who carry it out, if temporarily baffled, can always retreat from the general into the particular."
It is increasingly accepted that science should have some strategic role to play in education but misconceived ideas about science have made it hard to work out what that role might be. A vacuum is waiting to be filled in the theory and practice of education, and Medawar's book should help to fill it. The "piling up the data" theory has to be put in its place (the dust-bin of history) because it promotes over specialisation, as though the person who spends the most time digging the most narrow trench will get further in the field. At the same time outsiders are discouraged from trying to find out what the scientists are up to, for how can they ever find the time to get into the trenches and master the accumulated store of information?
The alternative "hot air balloon" view of science may be more helpful and realistic. Rival theories do not depend on the sheer weight of evidence (most of the evidence can be used to support opposing theories), nor do they gain credibility by longevity alone. They need to compete for survival under critical scrutiny and tests. Five types of test can be applied: the test of evidence, the test of internal consistency, the test of consistency with other well-tested theories, the check on the problem (does the theory actually solve the problem, or just skirt around it) and the check of metaphysics (the least understood at this stage). With this view of knowledge people like Leonard Woolf could claim that he could become an expert in any field with three months of concentrated study (between running the Hogarth Press, writing Fabian tracts and socialising in Bloomsbury). More realistically we might follow the advice of Jacques Barzun in The House of Intellect
With a cautious confidence and sufficient intellectual training, it is possible to master the literature of a subject and gain a proper understanding of it: specifically, an understanding of the accepted truths, the disputed problems, the rival schools and the methods now in favor. This will not enable one to add to what is known, but it will give possession of all that the discipline has to offer the world.
There is much talk of the modern explosion of knowledge. This is mostly an explosion of publications, some of which advance our knowledge but only by a very small amount. Many do not even do as much as that. The existence of high quality science reporting in popular magazines (New Scientist etc) nullifies the despairing belief that the frontiers of science are receding ever further from view. These publications make Barzun's aim (if not Woolf's) entirely feasible for anyone who wants to keep informed of the main lines of scientific advance; to keep track of the balloons which float in the air, tugging at their mooring lines, while on board the balloons the infernal Popperian dialectic of conjecture and refutation rages, day and night.
Book Description
The New York Times closely covered the political career and presidency of Abraham Lincoln: his political rise, the early years of his presidency, the Civil War, and his assassination and its aftermathperhaps our nations most dramatic presidency. Lincoln in the Times includes coverage of the major events in Lincolns political life such as his campaign, election, and inaugurals; the state of the union addresses, Gettysburg Address, and Emancipation Proclamation; the assassination and funeral. Edited with introductions and supporting text by David Herbert Donald and Harold Holzer, the book contains vintage photographs and illustrations of Lincoln and others close to him, in the White House and on battlefields that he visited.
Customer Reviews:
A Man for All Times.......2005-12-04
Two of the best of Lincoln's men, David Herbert Donald and Harold Holzer, have edited a book every person interested in Abraham Lincoln and/or newspaper coverage in the Civil War era should own.
While a solid effort throughout, I found the second half of this book the most interesting. The reports printed in the New York Times on the last days of the war through the assassination conspiracy and its aftermath have a striking immediacy.
The report carried in the Times on Walt Whitman's talk on Lincoln given in New York City, some twenty-two years after that dreadful day of April 14, is an especially fine close to a valuable book on our nation's greatest president.

The Holocaust: Polish Warnings and World's Unbelief.......2006-06-23
This multi-faceted book, written by a Polish-Underground messenger, provides a wealth of information. Polish contacts had long been trying to inform the world about the German-Nazi extermination of Jews (p. 173, 274-276), but their warnings fell on deaf ears, even in western Jewish circles. Ignacy Szwarcbart (Szwarzbart), a Jewish member of the Polish government in exile, actually begged Jan Nowak not to use the figure of only a few hundred thousand survivors of 3 million Polish Jews, in discussions with the British, because Nowak would not be believed. Szmul Zygielbojm was driven to suicide by the fact that world-wide Jewish organizations would not heed his warnings. Adam Pragier, a Pole of Jewish origin, told Zygielbojm that accounts of even 700,000 Polish Jews killed was "propaganda which no one would believe", and that he should drop one zero to state a more-believable figure of 70,000 Jewish victims. Nowak's discussion of these events soundly refutes the charge that Poles were disinterested in the fate of their Jews or otherwise disinclined to inform the world about it. Moreover, the reaction of local Poles to the liquidation of the Jewish ghettos was an increasingly fearless resistance, combined with recognition of the fact that the Poles were next (p. 105).
Many other details of Polish Underground activity are given by Novak. This includes an almost-successful assassination of Hitler during his victory parade in Warsaw in 1939. Much information is given about the widely circulated Polish Underground bogus publications in German, designed to undermine German troop and civilian morale. (One wonders how many accounts of so-called German resistance to Hitler are actually the fabrications of this Polish Underground propaganda campaign).
Polish collaboration with the Germans was very uncommon, In fact, in locations where Poles of German extraction were rare, it was very difficult for the Germans to find enough informers to suppress the Polish Underground conspiracy to any significant extent (pp. 95, 98). In those parts of German-conquered Poland directly annexed to the Reich, some Poles did register as Volksdeutsche under duress, while remaining loyal Poles (p. 468). In some places (e. g. Gdynia), the local Poles were forced to sign the Volksliste, and were labeled "Angedeutsche" (Angehorige) by the Germans (p. 200).
Polish Underground sabotage activity was carefully planned for maximum military effect for the cost in German reprisals against the nearby civilian population. In contrast, the Communist bands (e. g. AL, the so-called People's Army), sponsored by the Soviet Union, regularly (and purposely) engaged in actions designed to provoke draconian German terror against the local Poles (p. 170). The Communists knew that they had almost no support among the Polish population, thus they encouraged (and themselves resorted to) terror (later increased by the invading Red Army and NKVD) to force their will upon the prostrate Polish nation.
Much of the latter part of Novak's book discusses the British betrayal of Poland and shameless sellout to the Soviet Union. Novak points out that the British were already giving away Poland's eastern territories back in 1941, when the Soviet Union was still on the ropes and in no bargaining position. Novak deftly punctures the many British excuses given to justify the subsequent withdrawal of their treaty obligations to their first ally Poland. For instance, rationalizations of technical difficulties for the stoppage of airdrops of ammunition to the Polish Underground by the British (in fall 1943) are exposed by the fact that British fliers had no "technical difficulties" with long-distance flights to other locations. The refusal of the British and Americans to set up underground military missions in Poland was stated to be caused by the lack of a mountainous terrain (such as in Yugoslavia) necessary to insure their safety. Novak (p. 259) explodes this canard by pointing out the fact that fugitive British POWs, most of them who could not speak a word of Polish, were successfully hidden by the Polish Underground for as much as three years in Warsaw alone. There is no reason why members of a secret British military mission could not be hidden also, mountains or not. The British moralized about the injustice of Poland wanting her eastern territories back in view of the fact that they had opposed these territories going to Poland in 1919. But, as Novak points out, successive British government recognized these territories as part of Poland throughout the interwar era (p. 268). So why did 1919-era thinking suddenly matter now? Finally, Novak (p. 298) points out that the Soviets had been strongly dependent upon western shipments of trucks (and ammunition) throughout the war. This refutes the oft-repeated claim that the West never had any significant bargaining position against Stalin.
Poland's freedom was not to be. Novak cites documents which show that Poland's fate had been sealed by January 1944 at the latest. The British had secretly given away Poland's eastern territories and had not even set any conditions or accountability for the Soviets' occupation of Poland (and Germany up to the River Elbe). Novak states that he would not have believed this himself had he not seen the documents. Reflecting upon the Warsaw Uprising over 30 years after the event, Novak believes that it was not futile because it cemented the Poles desire to regain their freedom, regardless of how long it took.

Customer Reviews:
It works for the people who don't understand culture of the U.S.A at all.......2007-04-12
You can have a big picture or draft in your mind after reading this book.
Very insightful, easy reading, thought provoking resource on cultural norms.......2006-08-22
This book is an excellent resource for people who are ready and want to learn more about U.S. American cultural norms. This includes people from other countries and people living in the United States (regardless of citizenship). For U.S. Americans, by highlighting U.S. American culture the book also provides insight into other cultures.
The author rightly addresses the issue of stereotyping in the Introduction on page xxii. This point about cultural norms (which by definition indicates a wide distribution of actual behaviors within a culture and individual variations is important to keep in mind. The book is an easy read.
The chapters cover many aspects of life including social, educational, and business. U.S. Americans should also realize that the book is addressed to and written from the perspective of people from other countries. Nonetheless, it provides wonderful insights into U.S. culture and other cultures.
Underrated.......2006-05-20
I don't know why this book has a bad rap here, as I found it easy to read and entertaining as an American wanting to know about unique qualities of my own culture. The author examines a number of aspects of American culture and compares them to other cultures, I couldn't have asked for anything better. Perhaps there are better books on the subject, but this is the first I've read and it was sufficient for my purpose, although I will look into more after this one.
A good read for foreigners as well as natives, assuming a strong grasp of the English language or a translation. I found myself appreciating the American culture more than I did before. There has to be something to it considering our unprecedented success. Other cultures would be wise to take heed of our cultural strengths and cast aside the notion of cultural relativism. Things aren't all just "different"; one must believe that they can in fact be placed on a hierarchy. Or foreigners can refuse to believe it while we Americans enjoy our massive wealth, prosperity, and global might! Really, these things had to arise somehow.
Americans too should look out for strong points in other cultures that we might consider taking up in ours. It's just that we Americans have more, what can I say? Overall a great description of the best culture in the world for the best country in the world--go USA! Note: reviewer "disappoinment" exemplifies the author's claim that Americans see themselves as individuals who resent being pigeonholed into this or that classification. Right on the mark!
A Good Read!.......2002-12-17
Gary Althen's richly detailed guide shines a psychological, cultural and sociological spotlight on American customs, values, attitudes and behavior. Organized into 22 chapters that cover just about every aspect of American life, the book hits you with its uncanny insight, accuracy and honesty. Although he doesn't completely avoid stereotyping (and doesn't seem at all bothered by it), Althen presents the good, the bad and the quirky. He explains the "why" behind American attitudes and manners. Even though this is a guide for foreigners visiting, doing business in or living in the United States, we from getAbstract also suggest this book to Americans. It's an eye-opener about the national personality, or the perceived national personality, from naïvete to individualism. As Scotsman Robert Burns wrote, "Oh wad some power the giftie gie us, to see oursels as others see us." Well, here's your chance.
A Disappointment.......2002-06-21
I found this book to be a real disappointment.
This book does nothing to celebrate the diversity that exists in America. When reading it I have a sense that America is a country where all of the values are uniform and everything is done the same way. The author paints a very unrealistic and boring picture of the US.
