                  Book Description

Universal, unambiguous virus taxonomy (naming and categorization) is vital for distinguishing the thousands of viruses which have been isolated from humans, animals, plants, fungi, bacteria, and archae. Before an official identification and classification system was devised, there was much confusion and duplication of viruses isolated in different labs around the world. The first internationally organized attempts to introduce some order in the bewildering variety of viruses took place at the International Congress of Microbiology held in Moscow in 1966. A committee, later called The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), was given the task of developing a single, universal taxonomic scheme for all the viruses.

This is the seventh report produced by the ICTV and builds on the accumulated taxonomic data of its predecessors and records the proceedings of the Committee since 1995, including decisions reached at the Tenth International Congress of Virology held in Jerusalem in 1996, and at mid-term meetings in 1997 and 1998. The information is essential for anyone working in the field of virology. Clinicians in diagnostic laboratories, researchers citing viruses in published papers, and virologists in the business industry all must have the most updated virus taxonomy to make the appropriate references. The number of recognized viruses continues to grow with the development of better detection techniques, and the rapid evolution of virus variants.

                  Book Description

Rapid developments continue to take place in the research of viruses, the causative agents of infectious diseases in humans, animals, plants, invertebrates, protozoa, fungi, and bacteria. A still growing number of more than 30,000 viruses, virus strains, and subtypes are being tracked in various specialty laboratories and culture collections. In this situation of expansion and specialization, the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses was founded to establish, refine and maintain a universal virus taxonomy system giving information to virologists about the characteristics of the different groups of viruses. The Committee’s Sixth Report includes one order, 71 families, 11 subfamilies, and 175 genera and more than 4,000 member viruses. On 600 printed pages large amounts of molecular biologic data, illustrated by micrographs and virion diagrams, gene maps and tables give a comprehensive overview and prove helpful in teaching, in diagnostics, in scholarly research, and in the practical areas of medicine, veterinary medicine, plant pathology, insect pest management, and biotechnology. "... est une référence indispensable pour les chercheurs, les enseignants, les médecins ou les vétérinaires mais aussi pour les étudiants et d’une manière générale pour toutes les personnes intéressées par la virologie”. Revue de Médecine Vétérinaire "... an excellent, well presented and informative volume. The report should be an essential reference volume for any department or organization involved in the study of viruses”. Quarterly

                            Description:
Lagrangian stochastic (LS) models of dispersion in the convective boundary layer (CBL) are modified here to include the effects of particle fall velocity. This is accomplished by subtracting the fall velocity in the calculation of the vertical displacement, by reducing the decorrelation time-scale, and by making a new modification to the deterministic acceleration term in the vertical velocity increment equation. This new modification has an impact on downwind concentrations predicted by LS models of heavy particle transport in the CBL.

                            Book Description

Transcendentalism was the first major intellectual movement in U.S. history, championing the inherent divinity of each individual, as well as the value of collective social action. In the mid-nineteenth century, the movement took off, changing how Americans thought about religion, literature, the natural world, class distinctions, the role of women, and the existence of slavery.
Edited by the eminent scholar Lawrence Buell, this comprehensive anthology contains the essential writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, and their fellow visionaries. There are also reflections on the movement by Charles Dickens, Henry James, Walt Whitman, Louisa May Alcott, and Nathaniel Hawthorne. This remarkable volume introduces the radical innovations of a brilliant group of thinkers whose impact on religious thought, social reform, philosophy, and literature continues to reverberate in the twenty-first century.

When we think of Transcendentalism, we first turn to Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. But the literary movement was made up of more personalities than just those two men; and while "Nature" and "Walden" are key writings, they're not the only examples anyone can or should read. Hence the need and attraction of any transcendental anthology: it brings us multiple voices, perhaps even some unfamiliar or unusual ones.

This volume is a treasure-trove of transcendental goodies, containing more than 100 selections from 32 writers. Emerson's "Nature" and part of Thoreau's "Walden" are here, along with dozens of essays, sermons, and poems from a variety of personalities, men and women, too numerous to mention. Some pieces will be familiar to anyone who's read about the mid-1800s; others are refreshlingly new to most of us. Thanks to reading this book from cover to cover, I have discovered that I like Theodore Parker's writing quite a bit. I may have to stray off my Thoreauvian path and delve into Parker a bit more.

And yet, I disagree with some of the editor's observations in this volume. Unlike Buell, I don't think Thoreau considered surveying "a day job he didn't particularly care for," and I'm fairly certain he was never a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. I'm also not fond of the titles Buell created for some of the selections, because that method makes it difficult to compare his anthology with others or with the original works. For example, what is labelled here as Thoreau's "Christianity and Hinduism Compared" is really a portion from the book "A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers." "A Walk to Walden" by Nathaniel Hawthorne is really an excerpt from "The American Notebooks." But the sheer diversity, variety, and thematic arrangement of the selections far out-weighs any misgivings about their titling. If you are interested in transcendentalism, this is a wonderful book to start with. It's a nicely-priced paperback that's easy to carry around, which is important, because it'll take you a while to pore over and absorb (or even skip) its entries.

In addition, three older anthologies of transcendental writings may interest readers: "Transcendentalism: A Reader" (Joel Myerson, ed., 2000); "The Transcendentalists: An Anthology" (Perry Miller, 1977), and "The American Transcendentalists: Their Prose and Poetry" (Perry Miller, 1957). Each anthology has a focus, and surprisingly little overlap occurs when comparing their contents. And each contains a few jewels not found in any other contemporary anthology. Happy hunting!

This is a very good book about eating disorders (all kinds) but also about almost any issue that women deal with, including alcohol and drug abuse, rape, family issues, shop alcoholics and many more. Oakes-Ash is open, honest, and witty. The book actually reads more like an essay, (which can be repetitious at times) and not a typical story, which was something that I wasn't expecting. None the less, I highly recommend it for those interested in eating disorders. If you are just looking for a good novel story, then this is probably not the book for you.

Having suffered from eating disorders myself for several years (anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating disorder) and having read practically every book on the subject, I have to say that this is the best eating disorder book of them all. Rachael is refreshingly honest and witty in her descriptions of the madness. She writes not only about her bizarre and excessive eating habits but also about issues that any female can relate to. The loathing of one's thighs, the envy of our girlfriends and the belief that when you are thin you will have it all. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever resented the beaming smiles of movie stars that look down on us from billboards and believed that when we are a certain size, we will have the perfect life.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Read.......2005-03-11

A darkly comic look at the tragic world of eating disorders. Books on this subject often tend to lean towards melodrama, but Oakes-Ash writes in a less serious, lighter way, thst helps to make the words more accesible to the reader. Any woman who reads this, whether they have an eating disorder or not, will certaintly recognize aspects of their own personality in Rachael's story. The fact that Oakes suffered anorexia, bulimia and copulsive overeating means that the story fundementally covers all basis on the eating disorder spectrum, and provides a range of varied perspectives.

The most impressive aspect of the book is the sheer frankness of the author's writing. She is refreshingly honest, telling her story in graphic detail whilst resisting the urge to 'sugar-coat' her biography in order to make herself look better. It is this openness - this baring of the soul - that makes the reader immediately warm to Rachael, a factor which helps to make her words & her underlying message seem so much more genuine than the usual crop of 'Self-help' books that are dominating the market at the moment.

Of all the British guns in use during the Second World War, the 25 pounder is the gun that best represents Britain's armed forces. It was adaptable, it packed a powerful punch, and above all it was reliable. This book provides a full combat history of a gun that was used in every theatre of the Second World War and saw extensive service in the postwar years, particularly in Korea and during the Malaysian emergency. The last 25-pounder gun to see action in the British Army was one used by SAS troops at Mirbat, Oman, in 1972.

In a unique format of intellectual challenge and counter-challenge prominent Native Americans and Marxists debate the viability of Marxism and the prevalence of ethnocentric bias in politics, culture, and social theory. The authors examine the status of Western notions of "progress" and "development" in the context of the practical realities faced by American Indians in their ongoing struggle for justice and self-determination. This dialogue offers critical insights into the nature of ecological awareness and dialectics and into the possibility of constructing a social theory that can bridge cultural boundaries.

I really enjoy this little gem. It met all of my criteria for valuable reading: It made me think, it increased my understanding of concepts, issues and ideas that interest me, it serves as a valuable resource that I will be able to refer to later, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy copies for friends.

The overall strength of this book undoubtedly rests in the way it exposes the cultural blinders with which so many "Europeans", with a special emphasis here on marxists, regard indigenous cultures, essentially any non-European peoples. Grounded in an unapologetic Native American skepticism of marxist ideology and intent, the book consists of a series of essays, alternating between American Indian and marxist contributors, where the onus is placed on the latter to "respond to critique by defining its (marxism's) utility and potential to Indians." Although there are a lot of brilliant and thought-provoking opinions and statements generated throughout, the most insightful analyses remain on the part of the Native American contributors and the editor, Ward Churchill. Debunking the claim that marxism represents the epitome of original and superior analytical insight into the "humanization of society", essays by Russell Means, Vine Deloria Jr., Frank Black Elk, Dora-Lee Larson and Churchill offer very lucid observations and suggestions while providing a fascinating evaluation of what is probably the most influential European ideology from a non-euro perspective. Nowhere is this more evident than in the discrepancy between world views, pitting an all-encompassing integration with nature and its importance for human survival against the European stress on production and control over nature. The writings of the marxist contributors provide some astute summations of, primarily orthodox, marxism and how it might apply to socio-cultural problems in non-euro societies, though in the end they do a better job of revealing an underlying cultural chauvinism, illustrating once again how easily doctrine leads to dogma. This is most evident in the insignificant contribution of the Revolutionary Communist Party, interesting only in that it verifies how ideology inevitably encourages ignorance and arrogance on the part of its fanatics, and certainly dispelling even the notion that communism should be seen as the culmination of progessive socialization.

Another major strength of this book is its readability. Though it covers some heady ground, it is presented and always written in a very accessible manner, never floating off into verbose, over-intellectualized abstractions. A background in marxist theory is not necessarily required, as the essays themselves do a great job of covering the core framework and concepts, while the main themes addressed are done so in a manner that anyone should automatically be able to relate to. Credit much of this clarity to the cogency of the Native American mind. Churchill ends the book with a characteristically direct and wise summary of how marxists can benefit from this type of critique, which is not unique, by the way, to the American Indian perspective, and how everyone benefits from working as allies. To close, Churchill outlines a " rudimentary crash course" for acquainting oneself with the Indian experience in America, with a useful bibliography and a call to action for those who understand that the future of the Native American determines the future of everyone on this planet. A powerful message of utmost exigency, as relevant now as when originally published.

4 out of 5 stars Class Project Book Review.......2002-12-14

We chose to read this book for a group project in a class on Marxism. It's definitely worth reading if you're into Marxism, Native American issues, or radical politics. The book is set up as a collection of essays, with some critiquing previous input from other authors. Whether you end up agreeing with anything the authors say its definitely food for thought, particularly the notion raised that while Marxism does attempt to solve problems of inequity and oppression, it ultimately will do nothing for the plight of native peoples or to conserve the earth's resources. Russell Means (whose cred is very questionable)makes the claim that industrialization is the enemy more so then class conflict, which Marxism does not address. He states that Marxism will continue to see the earth and its resources as something to be exploited, with the only difference being that the wealth is distributed more equitablly. So basically the earth will continue on its downward spiral wrought on by human beings, but at least we'll all have our little piece, at least in theory.

The book doesn't get a 5 only because most of its contributors engage in the typical intellectual abstracts that "activists" with PHd's love to engage in, in order to show how down they are with revolution and radical change. But in the meantime, while another PHd sits at his computer and comes up with the newest scholarly academic interpretation of what Marx means today, the top 5% of the people in this nation own more then the bottom 95%, 30 million Americans live in complete poverty, millions more hover just barely above it but can't do anything to change it because we don't have a liveable wage, 40 million Americans are without health care, we're spending another 350 billion a year on the military, and on the verge of another imperialistic war.

PHd's, students, and activists: GET OFF THE INTERNET AND DESTROY THE RIGHT WING.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A must read... a real eye-opener........1999-03-13

An enlightening foray into the concerns of Native Americans heretofore unknown and/or unrecognized by white Americans. Masterfully edited by Churchill, the book discusses Marxist ideology and the Native Americans' place within it. Particularly powerful is Russell Means' piece on the "European mentality". Truly an eye-opener.

                                      Book Description

"Horne's writing handsomely communicates the artistic, political and social climate of the world that created the multidimensional Graham Du Bois... You will not want to put it down."
                                      —Black Issues Book Review

"A fascinating account of the extraordinary life of W. E. B. Du Bois's widow: a complex, creative woman who lived a colorful, meaningful life."
                                      —Essence

"Horne is the first biographer to grant Shirley Graham Du Bois her due."
                                      —Boston Globe

"Gerald Horne rescues Shirley Graham Du Bois from historical obscurity and from the shadow of her husband."
                                      —The Women's Review of Books

"Horne's account is sensitive to the self-assertion of a brilliant African American woman in an environment dominated by racism and male supremacy...Its exemplary exploration of the intersection of gender, race, art, black protest, and postcolonial Africa is an inspiration for further research into the expatriate Left."
                                      — Axel R. Schäfer, The Journal of American History

"Horne's book is path breaking because it departs from the usual scholarly habit of valorizing the lives of African American men at the expense of recording the contributions and lives of African Amercian women."
                                      — Political Affairs

”HorneÂ's biography of this outstanding woman provides a treasures throve of detail and insight into a life of this intriguing and, until this study, one of the least studied and least appreciated activists and artists of the 20th century.”
                                      —Sage Race Relations Abstracts

One of the most intriguing activists and artists of the twentieth century, Shirley Graham Du Bois also remains one of the least studied and understood. In Race Woman, Gerald Horne draws a revealing portrait of this controvertial figure who championed the civil rights movement in America, the liberation struggles in Africa and the socialist struggles in Maoist China. Through careful analysis and use of personal correspondence, interviews, and previously unexamined documents, Horne explores her work as a Harlem Renaissance playwright, biographer, composer, teacher, novelist, Left political activist, advisor and inspiration, who was a powerful historical actor.

From the author: This analysis of 29 lines of fieldnotes, which comprise a verbatim record of an interview concerning "bad medicine" among the Dene-Tha of northern Alberta, is intended to alert ethnographers to some of the ways in which ethnomethodology and conversation analysis can illuminate ethnographic interviews and fieldnotes. It demonstrates that cultural context, commonly assumed to "determine" or "influence" behaviour, is generated within conversation itself. It further demonstrates that cooperation between fieldworker and informant is much more pervasive than writers of "dialogic" experimental ethnographies appear to realize. It constitutes an empirical alternative to esoteric "interpretive" anthropological discourse not securely grounded in inspectable records of actual intercultural talk.

                                              Book Description

In his 1998 book Consilience, E.O. Wilson set forth the idea that integrating knowledge and insights from across the spectrum of human study -- the humanities, social science, and natural sciences -- is the key to solving complex environmental and social problems. Experiments in Consilience tells the unique story of a pathbreaking effort to apply this theoretical construct in a real-world setting.

The book describes the work of the Biodiversity Research Network, a team of experts from the United States and Canada brought together to build interdisciplinary connections and stimulate an exchange of expertise. Team members sought to understand the ecology and population dynamics of key species in particular ecosystems, to understand the impact of human populations on those species and ecosystems, and to develop tools and processes for involving a greater variety of stakeholders in conservation efforts.

In order to keep the experiment grounded, the network focused on a single type of conservation planning workshop run by a single organization -- the Population and Habitat Viability Assessment Workshop (PHVA) of the IUCN-sponsored Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG).

The book combines sections on the theoretical underpinnings of relevant concepts in population biology, simulation modeling, and social science with detailed descriptions of six PHVA workshops conducted on different species across four continents. A concluding chapter examines the lessons learned, which have application to both theory and practice, including reflections on interdisciplinarity, integrated risk assessment, and future directions for research and action. Through the combination of theory and application, combined with frank discussions of what the research network learned -- including both successes and failures -- the book offers fresh ideas on how to improve on-the-ground conservation decisionmaking.

Experiments in Consilience offers a one-of-a-kind overview and introduction to the challenges of cross-disciplinary analysis as well as cross-functional, cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral action. It centers on the problem of conserving endangered species while telling the story of a new form of organizing for effective risk assessment, recommendation, and action.
