Book Description
Love, sexuality, and mate selection are fundamental human experiences. Inherently linked, they are best understood in relation to one another. Yet most of the current texts on love and marriage are written from a purely psychological perspective, while those on human sexuality tend to be written from a biological or physiological perspective.
The Mating Game: A Primer on Love, Sex, and Marriage combines theory and research from a wide array of disciplines to explore these three major aspects of human mating dynamics. This engaging, interdisciplinary primer is divided into four parts that encompass a wide range of theoretical and empirical work: Part One considers the topic of love, Part Two examines relational sexuality, Part Three focuses on mate selection and marriage, and Part Four summarizes individual differences in relationship orientation.
Key Features
- Explanations of theory and research from a variety of social and behavioral sciences that highlight the links between these interrelated topics
- Extensive measurement instruments and an understanding of how to interpret research
- Provocative examples and anecdotes to capture the attention of students
- Chapter outlines, lists of key terms and concepts, section introductions, chapter summaries, recommended readings, and discussion questions
Strongly grounded in methodology and research design,
The Mating Game provides a comprehensive review of the nature of love, the role of sex in relationships, and theories of human attraction. Pamela C. Regan presents inclusive information collected from both cross cultural and multicultural samples.
Designed to promote active learning and spark debate for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in courses on Interpersonal or Close Relationships, Marriage and Family, and Human Sexuality,
The Mating Game is also an indispensable resource for psychologists, therapists, and health professionals.

Customer Reviews:
A book in the highest tradtion.......2006-10-27
Tony has written a memoir that I read in one sitting. It held my attention from each short chapter to the next. I appreciated how humbly the events of his tours of duty as a machine gunner were told. Tony doesn't portray himself as a hero, but his deeds speak otherwise. Being a Vietnam Vet myself I was struck by a chance encounter he had with a "striking" Vietnamese lady 20 some years after his return. She thanked him for fighting her country, something no one had said to him since his return. Something most of us Vets never heard, "thank you". Thank you Tony for the wonderful book you've written.
Great Look At Huey Helicopter Crews In Vietnam.......2006-06-06
When I finished reading Tony's book I found it to be right on the money about that long ago life event; I felt I was back in my old helicopter company in Vietnam. Tony takes you back and shows you how it was to be a door-gunner, crew-chief or a pilot. For those who have been there it feels real and is authentic--to those who were not, it is an education in how it felt to be there. This is a must read book. It is okay for teenagers to read - it is not overly offensive and sticks to the story line. I rate this book among the best written in 2003 on the Vietnam War.
This book is an easy read - it follows a logical path and can be read all at once or in pieces as time permits. It is an award winning book having received awards and recognition from various organizations including the American Authors Association and the MWSA.
Succeeds in Communicating his Vietnam Experience.......2003-12-07
Set during the time-frame just prior to the Tet Offensive. Tony Lazzarini succeeds in communicating his experience in Vietnam as a UH-1D (Huey) door gunner. He does an outstanding job describing, from one man's tactical perspective, the emerging doctrine of air assault. Highest Traditions also gives you a perspective of the social and emotional impact of the war on Tony and his fellow soldiers.
I enjoyed reading this book. Once I picked it up, it was hard to put down. Organized into many very short chapters making it easy to read. Highly recommended for those of you that have an interest in Air Assault or helicopter operations during the Vietnam War. Check it out, you won't be disappointed.
first rate memoir.......2003-08-19
Luckily for us Tony Lazzarini was not your average Huey door gunner whose life span was 20 seconds tops.
His HIGHEST TRADITIONS is a short & simply written time capsule of that era, & is one of the best Viet Nam memoirs ever to cross my desk. Without apology or pretention it tells, in a collection of gripping stories, one young American's trial by fire.
RebeccasReads recommends this for the military reader.
A Great Read.......2003-08-10
This is the second book I've had the pleasure of reading by Tony. His writing style is easy to read and always entertaining. One of those books that you don't want to put down until you're done, then pick it up again and start all over. He has a way of taking you from page to page, keeping you in the scene and taking you to the next with ease. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Stanley Stevens brings a new historical perspective to his remarkably well-researched study of a subsistence society in ever-increasing contact with the outside world. The Khumbu Sherpas, famous for their mountaineering exploits, have frequently been depicted as victims of the world's highest-altitude tourist boom. But has the flow of outsiders to Mt. Everest and the heights of Nepal in fact destroyed a stable, finely balanced relationship between the Sherpas and their environment?
Stevens's innovative use of oral history and cultural ecology suggests that tourism is not the watershed circumstance many have considered it to be. Drawing on extensive interviews and data gathered during three years of fieldwork, and with the use of numerous maps and charts, he documents the Sherpas' ingenious adaptation to high-altitude conditions, their past and present agricultural, pastoral, trade, and forest management practices, and their own perspectives on the environmental history of their homeland. This is a book for geographers, anthropologists, and all those interested in conservation of the earth's high places.

PASS ON A POSITIVE CHANGE by Joel Osteen on CDs (Retail price: $16.00)
CHANGE THE COURSE OF HISTORY
What choices are you making for future generations of your family? Are you leaving a legacy of greed, selfishness, defeat, and negativity? Or are you building a positive inheritance of charity, hope, kindness, love and integrity?
Throughout the Bible, there are many examples of people whose lives were blessed because of their parents' or grandparents' obedience to God's principles. In Deuteronomy 30:19, the Lord says, "I set before you life and death, blessings and curses, therefore choose life so that you and your descendants may live."
In his series, "PASS ON A POSITIVE CHANGE," Pastor Joel Osteen encourages you that even if you were the recipient of a bad legacy - divorce, poverty, alcoholism, addiction, abuse - you can pass on something different to your children and grandchildren. You can be free! You can be the one who changes the course of history for your children and for future generations of your family.
Pastor Joel shows you how in this enlightening set of four messages that includes:
Impacting Future Generations
Breaking Free from the Strongholds of the Past
Developing Good Habits
Receiving God's Mercy
Decide right now that you are going to take a stand for God and commit to being a person of excellence. Do it for your children. Do it for your family. Do it for the generations to come. When you make good choices you will not only see God's mercy and compassion pour out on future generations, but He will pour out His blessings and favor in your own life and you will live a life of victory and fulfillment today.

Long time award winning sports writer and broadcaster Bobby Johnson takes you on a memorable journey from Memorial Day--the unofficial beginning of summer--to 2004's wonderful World Series! A guaranteed happy ending!
Customer Reviews:
This guy loves his team!.......2005-07-06
From the first page to the last, it was obvious that Bobby Johnson was a true Red Sox fan. Even when the team struggled mightily in the early part of the season, Bobby constantly told the readers that the team had all the elements that it took to win. I really enjoyed the Sox winning the World Series and now I can enjoy 2004 all over again anytime I want. "What Curse?" sits on my coffee table and everybody that comes in just loves to pick it up and read a few pages. All my friends are getting this book for Christmas this year. It is truly a great story captured on a day by day basis!

Make A Wish On A Skating Star.......2007-10-13
If there ever had been a symbiotic melting together of two human beings in coalescence it happened betwen Sergei Grinkov and Ekaterina Gordeeva on ice.
A BEAUTIFUL MOVING STORY.......2007-02-20
I read this book lastyear in the Hardcover edition and I cried. It is such a moving, loving, tragic, and heartwarming story full of love that a young widow had for her husband and skating partner and the child Daria that they had together. It told of their skating years, marriage, how they met, and came to america along with the tragic death of her young husband Sergei. I couldn't put this book down. A great story that you will love. Well written.
Interesting in an unexpected way.......2007-01-02
First of all, this is a great book. The story is written beautifully, and pictures were added in all the right places. I don't tear up easily, so the book didn't make me cry, but it was touching nonetheless. However, I was surprised to find that this book was also useful in that it gave me some great insights into Russian culture, specifically how it differs from life here in America. This is a great book for a plethora of reasons; I'd definitely recommend it!
The Ultimate Romantic True Story.......2006-11-01
Beautifully written and if you love to read romantic tales then this is your book. I especially adore this book because it is also an autobiography, which is my favorite genre. The love/life story of Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov is a magical and romantic story that totally transcends cultural and language differences as well as place in time differences. If you love ice skating, then their lives as professional skaters is an added bonus for you, but I can assure you that you do not need to know a thing about figure skating nor do you even need to enjoy the sport. This is a classic love story from start to finish and will leave you feeling envious of their deep bond, deep love, and profound friendship. I love this book and have read it many times. You'll cry, you'll blush, and you'll want the same type of love in your life and if you're lucky enough to have it, then you will appreciate your love just a little more after reading their beautiful story.
My Sergei .......2005-10-05
Performing in their flawless, elegant, and unique style, Ekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov were the most celebrated pairs skaters of all time. Tragically, Their fairy-tale perfect story came to an end on November 20, 1995 when Sergei died of a heart attack at the age of twenty-eight. This book was appealing for its skating theme and tragic love story. Ice skating has always been a beautiful, elegant sport to all who watch, but we rarely know the full story behind the athletes we see. To learn about this couple who were initially partners on the ice and then partners in life seemed very interesting. They were two soul mates who were partners on and off the ice.
Ekaterina Gordeeva was a tiny, serious and very shy girl of eleven who was always obedient. Sergei Grinkov was a fun-loving, outgoing boy of fifteen. Both were talented and dedicated. They were mismatched kids paired together as chance. Ekaterina, or Katia as people call her, recalls this as the start of their relationship, although she knew none of it at the time.
Gordeeva and Grinkov (G & G as they were known) they won four World Championships and two Olympic gold medals. At their first Olympics, Katia did not think they really deserved a gold medal. They were with a strict coach who had them do plain non-original programs. There was no expressive movements or technical merit. Socially, Katia's experience was negative because she was only sixteen. She did not fit in with all the older kids, and often felt lonely. They would go to bars and leave her out. After the Olympics, Katia and Sergei felt it was time to switch coaches. They wanted better choreography and increased difficulty in their routines. One of their old coaches came back to them. Marina Zueva was an amazing creative choreographer and coach. She also had the best musical taste. She taught them new elements and facial moods to express when they skated. This was important to Katia because they were able to make their skating unique and interesting to watch.
Between training and competing, the couple fell madly in love. They managed to express their deep emotions for each other in a passionate skating style. They married and had a child a year later. Their daughter was born on September 11, 1992, and was named Daria. Their skating became even more inspired by the birth of Daria. Katia felt very fortunate and happy to have such a wonderful family. Sergei was her protector and would never do anything to harm her. It was almost like a fantasy. In their second Olympics, they did a program to the Moonlight Sonata and won gold. It was what they had been wishing for so long. "This one we won for each other." (page 226) Katia felt her goal had been finally reached.
On November 20, 1995, Katia and Sergei were doing a routine practice session with Marina. They were skating through their early movements of their developing program. They were supposed to do crossovers before a lift. "The full orchestra was just coming in, one of those high waves of music Marina liked so much. Sergei was gliding on the ice, but he didn't do the crossovers. His hand didn't go around my waist for the lift." (page 255) Sergei glided into the boards, then bent his knees and lay down on the ice carefully. Marina came over to him, and she knew it was a heart attack and started CPR on him. When he was brought to the hospital, the doctor gave him electric shocks and a shot of Adrenalin in the heart. However, they had lost Sergei. The next few weeks were a blur. There were many arrangements to be done and decisions to be made. Katia was very devastated and felt as if her life had ended also.
A celebration of Sergei's life was planned. Fellow skaters came together to put on a show, and Katia prepared a solo program. She was so emotional throughout the celebration. When she went out to skate her solo, it felt as if someone was holding her hand and guiding her. This was important to Katia because she wanted to be able to say goodbye to Sergei by doing the thing they had worked so hard on throughout their lives, skating.
While Katia was in the dreamy romance with her husband, she became very oblivious to the world around her. She was always dependent on Sergei to protect and guide her. Katia was afraid to trust people or say things that might hurt them. Also, she was afraid of what people might say about her. "Time I have learned, is a doctor. Skating has been the best medicine for me." (page 289) She felt that God was sending her a message, to open her eyes to the world and experience what it was like not to be so blessed. She is now learning the disappointments of life. Katia has a job of building a new life for Daria and herself. Katia is now reaching out to friends and being more interested in their lives. She is getting to know her parents again, and make up for all the time she was traveling away from home. Finally, she is learning that there are new things in life to discover. As for skating, she has yet to summon the courage to skate alone with only Sergei's spirit to guide her.

Book Description
This is the story of a young man's journey through World War II. It covers a wide cross section of the strengths and weaknesses of young men not attuned to killing, and not mentally prepared to face the horror of seeing their close friends die violent deaths in battle. The story is about the hopes, the prayers, the fears, the daily miseries and even the lighter moments that the aspiring heroes of the Perth Regiment experienced on the Italian front as part of 11th Infantry Brigade, 5th Canadian Armoured Division. As the title suggests, from his first battle inoculation Private Stan Scislowski realizes he is not destined for the heroic role to which he once aspired. His fears affect him deeply: his burning dream of returning home a national hero becomes more and more improbable, and his attempts to come to terms with his un-heroic nature make the war as much a mental battle as a physical one. His story is much like that of the overwhelming number of Canadians who found themselves in the cauldron of war, serving their country with all the strength they could find, even when that strength was fading fast. Not All of Us Were Brave focuses not on the heroes, but on the ordinary soldiers who endured the mud, the misery, the ever-present fear, the inspiration, and the degradation. The narrative holds nothing back: the dirty linen is aired along with the clean; the light is shown alongside the dark. It shows what war is all about.

World War II experiences with The Perth Regiment in Italy.......2005-01-23
Not All Of Us Were Brave is the autobiographical account of Stanley Scislowski's World War II experiences with The Perth Regiment.
Unlike most other personal accounts I've read in the past, Stan jumps into the action fairly quickly, devoting only 60 pages to training in England and then straight to Italy. The book closes at the end of the war, forgoing a detailed follow-up on Stan and his fellow Perths in their post-war lives. That's not to say however that we don't see the personal side of Stan. On the contrary, he spaends a great deal of time laying out the his impressions and experiences as well as the characters he's in daily contact with.
Refreshingly, Stan doesn't pull any punches when giving his impressions his brothers in arms, or even the Corps Commander! If he didn't get along with someone, he says so, giving his reasons and citing examples where possible. That's not to say he trash talks his mates, but he's not afraid to point out where he and another disagree on something. Even more surprisingly, Stan is startlingly candid about his own inadequacies. He doesn't shy away from his mistakes and regrets, even detailing occasions when he felt like a coward or a malingerer (though he was neither). Likewise, he brushes aside feats of endurance and heroism as simply "not giving up while the guy ahead was still going."
He's similarly unflinching in his description of the horrors of war. There are no euphemisms here, the blood, gore, pain and death of his experiences are laid out for all to see. There's a truly personal feeling to his account that is sometimes missed by wartime autobiographers. When he waves hello to a fellow soldier he hasn't seen in a while only to watch him ripped apart by a teller mine three seconds later, or when he's a stretcher bearer as 14 of his comrades are blown up by a well placed artillery shell, the gut-wrenching despair is almost palpable.
In addition to the big things, Mr. Scislowski also details the "little things" that make the experience so rich. From innovative ways to improve your comfort to the boredom of being locked in a sangar all day, you feel the small highs and lows as well as the big ones. Stan is also candid about his escapades as an amateur looter, and again makes no excuses for delving into a "taboo" subject. These were different times.
This book is a "worms eye view" of the war, so don't expect to come away with a full picture of how the 5th Armoured Division operated in Italy. It's obvious he's done his research though, as there is a considerable amount of context given for each operation. Other accounts I've read have the author travelling simply from one unnamed hamlet or empty field to another, but Stan takes great pains to detail each portion of his journey up the "boot" providing perspective that makes it easy to follow and relevant.
Overall, it may not be as "action packed" as some accounts, but it's a good read for an honest take on the Italian campaign.
An Honest Book.......1998-08-08
Stan's book was a refreshing, straightforward presentation of his feelings, emotions, actions and experiences in the Italian Campaign. It is probably the most honest book that I've read. It has been well circulated amongst my friends. The response has been incredulous!
A Fantastic " Real Person" account of WW2........1998-08-04
When you read this first person account of what was like as a member of the Perth Regiment in WW2, you really get a sense of what the ordinary man was subjected to. This is not a book full of strategy and what the Commanders or Generals of the Armies in Italy had to say about the conflicts of the Italian campaign, it is the man on the ground, what he saw. And how Stan and his friends reacted to all the situations of war. Good times and bad.
A great reading book with a nice introduction by G. Watt. I reccomend it to anyone who is interested in history or first hand accounts of war. A must read for any Canadian.
Great Account of one man's experience in the Italy Campaign.......1998-07-10
Great account of one man and his Canadian unit's experience during the Italian campaign in WWII. The author is very candid about his feelings, fears and humorous thoughts... Well written and easy to read with alot of old Canadian slang which makes it quite enjoyable. His storytelling ability puts you right onto the battlefield and you can really feel the serious effects of battle and death.... Any one that served in Italy or has relatives that served may want to read this... The Author has an extensive collection of personal recollections of serious as well as humorous times.. He could not have picked a more perfect title for his book.... If you are tired of reading about all headline heros of WWII, try this one, he brings you into the trenches with the real heros...

The narrative lacks fire and needs more context........2000-11-15
I love disaster books, and have since I was old enough to read chapter books. Early in my relationship with Amazon, I did a subject search on different disasters, and was suprised by the meager selection. There really are very few readable first-person/journalistic book-length disaster accounts available. We are indeed fortunate to have first-rate books like "The Perfect Storm," and "Isaac's Storm" come out so close together.
It is also the reason I must be kind in this review. These books remind you that you read books like this for two reasons. One is to participate vicariously in an intense experience. The second is to further our understanding of science--both social and physical. How does a disaster develop? How do we react to it? Were the right decisions made? This book, written before the others I mentioned, does not fufill any of these purposes very well.
"Lunatic Wind" is essentially a first-person account of the passage of Hurricane Hugo through South Carolina and how it affected a man, his two teen-aged sons and their grandmother. The account is very parochial and not very insightful.
Perhaps the most memorable passages are the descriptions of the two young men, doggedly ignoring and resourcefully dodging all attempts to keep them from surfing in a hurricane off a barrier island. If anything proves the late development of judgement skills in the adolescent this is it!
One hungers for comprehensive journalistic accounts of important disaster events like Hurricanes Hugo and Andrew: "How did the storms develop?" "Were they predicted accurately?" "How did people (and institutions) survive?" "What was the long-term impact?" But they are apparently rarely attempted. Which makes books like "Lunatic Wind" valuable.
"Lunatic Wind," should be seen as a primary source, a building block, to an eagerly anticipated comprehensive treatment of Hurricane Hugo.
Which Hurricane?.......2000-06-02
Hello....what book is this? Is it about hurricane Hugo? I need lots of info about hurricane Hugo! Now!
Hurricane Madness.......2000-05-19
This incredible book is the novelization on actual incidents that occurred during Hurricane Hugo. You will be unable to put this book down, in fact, you may very well fall off the edge of your seat!
