Book Description
Those who know and love the Chesapeake will find the bay they treasure on the pages of Water's Way: Life along the Chesapeake. The story of one of North America's most fascinating regions unfolds through the sensitive photographs and prose of two men who have studied the Chesapeake all their lives. Photographer David W. Harp and writer Tom Horton vividly portray how, as Horton writes, "the edges where land and water meet charm us all, from watermen to watercolorists and beachcombers to duck hunters."
Water's Way will guide you to "those rare, hidden nooks of the bay country where nature still appears as glorious and untrammeled as it did a thousand years ago." It will also take you to less hidden, but equally intriguing sites within the Chesapeake's reach as Harp and Horton depict the worlds of both nature and humans.
An intimate knowledge of and an unwavering reverence for the bay pervade Water's Way. Harp and Horton are as attuned to the romance that still clings to the Chesapeake as they are to the realities that inspire and threaten it. In a time when the region faces tremendous changes and challenges, Water's Way is neither strident nor sentimental. Rather, it is suffused with the fundamental respect for the bay which Harp and Horton see as key to its survival.
"Dave Harp's photography and Tom Horton's text are nothing short of inspirational. Through the combination of each man's art, Water's Way communicates the beauty and essence of the Chesapeake like no other book. It conveys the very reasons why I have dedicated my life's work to saving the bay."--William Baker, President, Chesapeake Bay Foundation
"Three forces have been hard at work in the making of this exquisite piece: the gentle and informed eye of Dave's camera, Tom's inspirited love affair with our language, and the mystery they conspire in, creating a vivid picture and genuine portrait of a life that is greater than ourselves."--Tom Wisner, author of Chesapeake Born
"Harp's photographs, gorgeously reproduced here... have, I think, finally surpassed the late Aubrey Bodine's famously romantic shots of the Chesapeake."--John Goodspeed, Easton Star-Democrat
"Tom Horton has a poet's touch and a realist's frankness as he writes of the delicate ecology of this great aquatic system in chapters whose subjects range from the role of marshes to the life of the watermen to the growing pressures of urban development... This book is a singing tribute to the bay."--Islands Magazine
Customer Reviews:
Review of Water's Way.......2000-08-12
Water's Way is a stunningly photographed, and exquisitely written glimpse of life in the Chesapeake region. The book celebrates beauty, both in the natural and human worlds. Author Tom Horton's essays are insightful, humorous, and well-crafted. His words flow like the many creeks and rivers that he describes on the Delmarva peninsula. Dave Harp's photography defines the people, animals, and landscape in such concert with Horton's words that the book should be considered the National Geographic of the Eastern Shore. This a worthy addition to anyone's coffee table.

The Rough Guide to the Dominican Republic 3 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)
ASIN: 1900949601 |
Book Description
Written by Sarah Cameron, an expert on travel in the Caribbean, and also editor of the award winning Footprint Caribbean Islands Handbook, the new Dominican Republic Handbook features all aspects of holidaying in this unique destination. There is full coverage of the best beaches and all associated watersports but the guide's main aim is to draw the visitor's attention to everything there is on offer. The guide includes colour photography, a feature on the history and culture of the Republic, full coverage of adventure tourism in addition to extensive listings of hotels, restaurants, car hire facilities and everything else the visitor needs.
Customer Reviews:
Unexpectedly good read.......2001-07-31
Cameron's approach beats the other guidebooks in its up to date assessment of the country's politics and history as it relates to each of the regions you plan on visiting. Relevant sidebar info is sprinkled throughout the book to provide the reader with something other than the usual monotonous listings of hotels, restarants, and places to visit--though she knows her stuff here as well. This book is the most currently published of all the other titles out there.

Lords of the Fly: Drosophila Genetics and the Experimental Life
ASIN: 0226610888 |
Book Description
Morphology—the study of form—is often regarded as a failed science that made only limited contributions to our understanding of the living world. Challenging this view, Lynn Nyhart argues that morphology was integral to the life sciences of the nineteenth century. Biology Takes Form traces the development of morphological research in German universities and illuminates significant institutional and intellectual changes in nineteenth-century German biology.
Although there were neither professors of morphology nor a morphologists' society, morphologists achieved influence by "colonizing" niches in a variety of disciplines. Scientists in anatomy, zoology, natural history, and physiology considered their work morphological, and the term encompassed research that today might be classified as embryology, systematics, functional morphology, comparative physiology, ecology, behavior, evolutionary theory, or histology. Nyhart draws on research notes, correspondence, and other archival material to examine how these scientists responded to new ideas and to the work of colleagues. She examines the intertwined histories of morphology and the broader biological enterprise, demonstrating that the study of form was central to investigations of such issues as the relationships between an animal's structure and function, between an organism and its environment, and between living species and their ancestors.

Book Description
The magnetic and related properties of lanthanide and actinide pnictides and chalcogenides have been compiled in subvolume 27B. While subvolumes 27B1, 27B2, 27B3, 27B4 and 27B5 (already published) deal with lanthanide pnictides and lanthanide chalcogenides of different type, the properties of actinide pnictides and chalcogenides are covered in subvolumes 27B6, 27B7 and 27B8 (already published). The present subvolume 27B7 deals with binary actinide pnictides and chalcogenides.
Binary actinide pnictides and chalcogenides form a large family of phases with different crystal and magnetic structures and a variety of physical properties. The literature has been reviewed up to the beginning of 2004. An index of substances at the end of this subvolume lists all binary actinide pnictides and chalcogenides treated in this subvolume.

Book Description
This set of six papers, written by eminent experts in the field, is concerned with that part of fluid mechanics that seeks its foundation in the rigorous mathematical treatment of the Navier-Stokes equations.
In particular, an overview is given on state of research regarding the global existence of smooth solutions, for which uniqueness and continuous dependence on the data can be proven. Then, the book moves on to a discussion of recent developments of the finite element Galerkin method, with an emphasis on a priori and a posteriori error estimation and adaptive mesh refinement. A further article elaborates on spectral Galerkin methods and their extension to domains with complicated geometries by employing the techniques of domain decomposition. The rigorous explanation of bifurcation phenomena in fluids has long been a central topic in the theory of Navier-Stokes equations. Here, bifurcation theory is introduced in a general setting that is particularly convenient for application to such problems. Finally, the extension of Navier-Stokes theory to compressible viscous flows, studied in two more papers, opens up a fascinating panorama of theoretical and numerical problems. While some of the contributions are expository, others primarily present new results within a wider context and fuller exposition than is usual for research papers. The book is meant to introduce researchers and advanced students to the research level on some of the most important topics of the field.

Book Description
Abraham Lincoln read it with approval, but Emily Dickinson described its bold language and themes as "disgraceful." Ralph Waldo Emerson found it "the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet produced." Published at the author's expense on July 4, 1855, Leaves of Grass inaugurated a new voice and style into American letters and gave expression to an optimistic, bombastic vision that took the nation as its subject. Unlike many other editions of Leaves of Grass, which reproduce various short, early versions, this Modern Library Paperback Classics "Death-bed" edition presents everything Whitman wrote in its final form, and includes newly commissioned notes.
From the Trade Paperback edition.
Customer Reviews:
All the stars in Heaven are not enough to rate these poems........2005-06-15
July 4 is the 150th anniversary of the publication of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass." This volume, if not the single greatest achievement in American letters, is certainly one of them. When I first read "Leaves of Grass" I felt jolted, as if great, loving hands had grabbed me and shaken me into consciousness. I felt live. I'd never read anything remotely like it. Until that moment, I had no idea that simple, everydays words, could be used to such ebullient effect. Since its publictaion it has come to be thought of as an almost holy text. Indeed, there is something almost Christ-like in the love of nature and humanity that Whitman conveys. Even through the bloody civil war and the assassination of our beloved President Lincoln, Whitman was able to find life affirming beauty and hope. That this was composed by an openly gay man edifies all gay people.

Inspirational and Touching.......2007-08-17
This book was truly touching to say the least!!!!! It blew my mind away. The simple fact is, in these times, it is a RARE commodity to see a truly LOVING and LONG LASTING relationship!!!
This book truly inspired me! Nancy and Ronald both loved each other genuinely and God Bless her for sharing something so personal and private to the world!!
If only we could all be loved this way.......2007-05-27
I loved reading this book! Afterwards I gave it to my mom to read. The love between Nancy and Ronald will leave you breathless. As their lives move on Ronald always still writes to his love Nancy. Maybe he knew he would leave her one day and wanted her to have a reminder of the man he was.....beautiful letters.....from a beautiful man!
Thank You.......2007-04-03
What a great book to read. I knew there were some men out there that could be so open about their feelings. Lucky you Mrs. Regan.
Ronnie Loves Nancy.......2007-02-13
The book was everything that I had hoped it would be. The warmth and intimacy of their relationship shone through in these wonderful, personal,
heartwarming letters. In todays world, where expressions of love and tenderness are frowned upon by many, this book shines through like a
beacon in the darkness. It exposes the beauty and tenderness of true love between these two exceptional human beings. It shows how a truly sincere marital relationship can endure and thrive even in these times. Thank you Mrs. Reagan for allowing us to enter into the beautiful world of yours and the Presidents. Your book can will certainly help all married couples who read it to strengthen their own relationships.
Beautiful Love Story.......2006-11-19
Regardless of your political ideologies this book will warm your heart. It is an easy read, but one you will cherish, and always keep near your bedside. At a time when the divorce rate is so high, and many families are so miserable it's wonderful to look at a President who cherished his wife, and a wife who truly felt cherished. In a society where everything is sexualized, it's nice to stop and read about something with so much depth, intensity and commitment. Beautiful...

Book Description
This book examines the Nazi SS Security Service - the Sicherheitsdienst - from its earliest beginnings and struggle against underfunding and rival organizations, to its triumph as one of the most professional and dangerous espionage services in the world.
Customer Reviews:
Needed more information on methodology.......2004-07-26
This was a nice book detailing the history of the Nazi secret services. There was an emphasis on the Sicherheitsdienst (SD) but the Abwehr was also given some attention. I picked up this book after reading Erich Gimple's story in 'Agent 146'. I was fascinated by his tactics and training and figured SS Intelligence would fill me in on all the details of the Nazi secret service. It did its job well to a degree. The history of the secret services was nice as well as the some of the missions assigned to the 'James Bond' of the Nazis. However, the actual protocols and agent training was barely touched upon. I learned more about tactics from 'Agent 146' than this book. There was a lot of talk on politics and the life of Reinhard Heydrich, the head of the SD. Though interesting, it did little to inform readers of some of the fascinating details of spy training, evasion tactics, and the equipment they used. This was not a bad book, it just lacked the facts I was looking for. If you are into all aspects of spying including biographies, politics, as well as synopses of certain missions and operations, than this book is for you. If you would like to learn how agents gather intelligence in the field, evade enemy operatives, and infiltrate organizations, than this book is not for you. You will be better off reading 'Agent 146' by Erich Gimple, the spy sent to learn and sabotage the Manhattan Project.
Disappointing.......2003-11-22
I was really disappointed in the content of this book. Rather than focusing on the historical data the author seemed more interested in spinning a interesting story based on his interpretation of fact. The book has the feel of a historical novel and contains a lot of editorializing in the place of solid analyis. Documentation of his stories and sources could be better. His bibliography is weak considering the vast amount of data available, both original source and works written in the last 50 years. To be fair the book is very readable despite it's shortcomings. Some chapters are not as scholarly as I would expect and I think that a person who has more of a technical interest in the subject would be better served by other titles.

Book Description
Our morning coffee is the fruit of the labor of millions of workers and producers in the South. Unfortunately, many of them earn paltry wages for work done under very difficult conditions. Chances are, the coffee you are drinking was grown by farmers who labored long, back-breaking hours while exposed to harmful chemicals in order to pocket a few cents.
??
In an attempt to break the cycle of malnutrition, dependence, illiteracy and violence, an alternative trade system, known worldwide as "fair trade," has been created. The products of this type of exchange, encourage consumers and retailers to opt for coffee which is "fairly traded."

This book looks at the fair trade movement by examining the issues surrounding the production and trading of coffee. Using Mexico as an example, part one describes the conventional coffee trade, tracing the coffee bean's journey from the tree, through the hands of several intermediaries in both the North and South, to its final destination as a cup of coffee. Part two presents the fair trade concept through the example of the Mexican peasant organization which was one of the first to embrace the fair trade system, and which was also a pioneer in the production of organic coffee. The third part explores the situation of fair trade in North America, and provides comprehensive sources and references for anyone who wants to get involved, at any level.

Laure Waridel, as a member of Action for Solidarity, Equality, Environment and Development, was instrumental in organizing the activist group, A Just Coffee, whose aim it is to raise our coffee consciousness and consciences, and opt for coffee which is "fairly traded." She lives in Montreal.

Customer Reviews:
Well at least there are a lot of nice pictures........2000-02-10
The title of the book is very misleading. There is very little information about mule deer in this book. I was expecting a book with detailed information on behavior and habitat. What you get is the authors' memories of hiking through wilderness taking pictures. There is some information of Mule Deer, but nothing you cannot get from a magazine article.
