        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had had this before 12/02 trip.......2003-01-15

This book provides fantastic helpful information. Unfortunately, I did not have this book with me BEFORE I took a plane for the first time in my life from the U.S. to the Middle East in December of 2002. On the return trip home just a few days ago (January 2003), I encountered flyers' nightmares: two cancellations, a delayed flight, major attitudes with airline agents, misinformation, countless security searches, and lost luggage. I wish I had had this book by my side before, during, and after the trip. It would especially have been a god-send during the 4-day return home that should have only taken 24 hours!! Highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars not just the same old same old........2002-07-15

The last customer review said this was just the same old same old - but that would only be true if you've already done a lot of travel reading. If you are a casual traveler, and want to know some useful tips of the trade, this is a great resource. It has lots of good advice for making trips cheaper and easier and there was a lot of stuff I didn't know that I will definitely put to good use - like did you know that tall people can get extra legroom by requesting seats in a certain part of the plane? Or that you can get free flights to Asia by volunteering as a business courier (okay, I probably won't ever do that, but it's fun to think about.) Also, the book has a surprising number of fascinating facts that will come in handy at dinner parties. The only downside is that some of the stuff is already outdated, but the author does a good job of explaining how to find out the latest information for yourself, which is the best any travel writer can do.

        1 out of 5 stars It's OK.......2002-07-12

This book is ok, but it really seems to be more of the same old-same old. Most of the information has been said in many past travel books and newspaper articles. I think this is basically old information packaged to take advantage of the events of 9-11.

        5 out of 5 stars I'm the author.......2002-06-28

First of all - the cover is different than the image above, and Maureen didn't write this one. I did; I'm a former writer for Expedia Travels Magazine, ABCNEWS.com and the Guardian in the UK who has lived on three continents and done my share of flying.

This book takes the mystery out of flying, and gives you some power over the kind of trip you have - over the legroom of your seat, the frequent-flyer miles in your account, the sandwich on your tray-table, and the money left in your wallet. It was entirely written after Sept. 11, so I go into great depth on what to expect at the airport, what to carry and what not to carry in your bags, and what to do if all the hullaballoo has made you afraid to fly.

Best of all, it's not written for "road warriors." Buy this book if you want to know what the road warriors now - how to get that exit-row seat or those extra 5,000 frequent flyer miles without stress or worry. And have a great trip.

              Book Description

The story of the California Condor--an awe-inspiring symbol of wilderness--is one of the most dramatic and contentious in conservation biology. Huge scavengers with wingspans reaching more than nine feet, Condors declined by 1985 to just nine individuals left in the wild. At that point, under a highly controversial program, the last birds were brought into captivity to create a population that could eventually be reestablished in nature. This engaging book, written by two scientists who were intimately involved with the Condor conservation effort, tells the full story of the California Condor, from the bird's evolution and biology to its captive breeding and subsequent releases, and its uncertain future. It introduces the largest soaring bird in the continental United States to a broad audience and at the same time presents an important case study of a critically endangered species.
Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Condors suffered from a variety of stresses--from shooting to strychnine poisoning that was an inadvertent side effect of campaigns to exterminate wolves and grizzly bears from California. Condors also faced dramatic declines in their food supply and progressively smaller foraging habitats. But as we are now coming to understand, the most important cause of their decline was lead poisoning caused by the ingestion of the ammunition fragments often present in its carrion food supply, especially in deer that were killed, but not recovered, by hunters. Noel and Helen Snyder delineate in clear fashion the myriad issues facing the Condor today and, looking to the future, convey a measure of hope that we may still achieve viable wild populations of this magnificent denizen of the California landscape.

                  Book Description

This book contains papers divided into three general sections according to the title of this text: algorithms, models, and applications. The first section on algorithms contains papers that are theoretical in nature or contain new techniques that relate to Defense Transportation System (DTS) processes. A sampling of the papers contained in this section deals with group theoretic "tabu" search techniques, shortest path sailing distance algorithms, and strategic airlift model validation methods. The second section contains papers on various transportation models used throughout the DoD and transportation industry, as well as some newly developed transportation modelling methods that may eventually find their way into larger scale transportation models. A review of the major strategic mobility models is also contained in this section. The third section contains papers on various transportation applications that have been used to support various DTS studies and analyses. This section also contains a diverse set of topics, with articles ranging from a paper on North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) strategic lift requirements to an analysis paper on theater reception, staging, onward movement, and integration.

                  · Preface by General John W. Handy, Commander, United States Transportation Command
                  · Focus on land, sea, and air transportation models and methods
                  · Manuscripts written by analysts and researchers active in the field and directly supporting the United States Defense Transportation System
                  · Research methods were instrumental in defining the in-place DTS that so efficiently deployed forces for Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom

                    Book Description

Over 100 classics of American investigative journalism, from Tom Paine to Bob Woodward. In collecting the kind of reportage that all too rarely appears in this age of media triviality and corporate conglomeration, Muckraking! documents an alternative journalistic tradition, one marked by depth of vision, passion for change, and bravery. From the Stamp Act to the abolition movement to the Vietnam war, from the fight against patent medicines to the elimination of labor spies, from the integration of baseball to the safety of government atomic workers, and from putting people in jail to getting them out, this book illustrates the great journalism that has made America a better country. With more than 125 entries that range across three centuries, Muckraking! brings together the greatest moments of American journalism. Supplying historical context and critical commentary, the book also includes a selection of influential photographs and illustrations. By turns compelling and shocking, Muckraking! is an anthology for anyone who feels passionate about the heights that journalism can climb or its ability to illuminate the darkest depths. 20 black-and-white illustrations.

Muckraking! features: "Escape to Freedom" by Frederick Douglass (1834) "Ten Days in a Madhouse" by Nellie Bly (1887) "Eyewitness at Triangle" by William G. Shepherd (1911) "Harvest Gypsies" by John Steinbeck (1936) "Unsafe at Any Speed" by Ralph Nader (1965) "The My Lai Massacre" by Seymour Hersh (1969) "AIDS Victims Seeking Help" by Randy Shilts (1985) "The Plutonium Experiment"by Eileen Welsome (1993) and over 100 other classics

The original meaning of the word "muck" is "excrement"; the more general term "dirt" is a 14th century development. Given this etymological context, the contemporary meaning of the term "muckraker" is obvious. What we have here in this volume, edited by the Serrins, is a detailed and enlightening examination of "the journalism that changed America." since the mid-eighteenth century. Certainly there has been no shortage of material to attract the interest and reward the efforts of journalists such as Robert S. Abbott, Ray Stannard Baker, Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, Nellie Bly, Frederick Douglass, David Halberstam, Seymour Hersh, Arthur Jones, Edward R. Murrow, Tom Paine, Drew Pearson, Lincoln Steffens, Randy Stilts, and Ida M. Tarbell. For many readers such as I, at least a few of these names are unfamiliar as are several of the publications represented (e.g. Chicago Defender, Grand Forks Herald, Jewish Frontier, and McClure's) in which many social and political reforms were eloquently advocated.

The Serrins skillfully organize more than 100 works of varying length within 13 sections, each of which has a general subject (e.g. sports, poverty, war, politics). No doubt many of the journalists represented in this volume had little (if any) idea of what would eventually be uncovered when they began their "raking." Of special interest to me are Douglass' appeal for support to abolish slavery ("Escape to Freedom," 1834), Steinbeck's examination of migratory workers ("Harvest Gypsies," 1936), Nader's indictment of the automobile industry ("Unsafe at Any Speed," 1965), and Hersh's expose of atrocities committed by American troops in Viet Nam ("The My Lai Massacre," 1969). Actually, I found all of the authors well-worth reading (or re-reading) and am grateful for the opportunity to share the thoughts and feelings of several previously unfamiliar to me.

The Serrins have assembled material which suggests how principled as well as passionate investigative journalism can help to achieve at least some reforms within a society which continues to be a "work in progress." Today, journalists continue to investigate allegations concerning corporate fraud (e.g. Enron, Arkadelphia, Global Crossing, and WorldCom), pedophilia (e.g. American priests within the Roman Catholic church), insider trading (e.g. Martha Stewart), and self-serving investment counsel (e.g. Merrill Lynch). It remains to be determined to what extent (if any) any of these current investigations result in any legal or social reform. Meanwhile, it is imperative that those now under investigation, unless confirming the allegations against them, be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Too often, in my opinion, the reverse has been true and the news media must share at least some of the blame for damage done. Investigative journalists should not be exempt from the same rigorous and relentless scrutiny to which they subject others. Question: Who will do that?

Despite early failures, R. G. LeTourneau rose to eminence in the competitive world of manufacturing and construction. Although his competitors thought him insane, history has proved that his inventive genius was decades ahead of its time. His combination of enterprise and Christian commitment led to his sponsoring many works involving missions and education, including LeTourneau College, a Christian liberal arts and technical school in Longview, Texas. Through a lifetime of business ventures, this engineering genius put faith into action and reaped big rewards. (More than 100,000 in print)

I could not put this book down. What a great book! One reviewer said to buy a second book to give away. I did, but I should have bought several extras! Now I'm buying more. This book has helped me to recognize God's purpose for my life and the incredible gifts He has given to each of us. A great gift for anyone, especially for someone who has ever been in the construction industry.

                        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!.......2007-01-22

This was one fantastic book that I could hardly put down. It is a great story of a man with dreams that were larger then life. He always said there are no big jobs, only small machines. Mr. LeTourneau had the capacity to envision larger and larger machines to make man more productive.

This book is 290 pages short with 26 untitled chapters which cover most of Mr. LeTourneau's life. From his childhood and quiting school in the 7th grade to his struggles and almost bankruptcy, he does a great job at unfolding his life the way it happened. He tells of how his business grew during the depression and of the great success he had in creating machines to do a job that none had done before. He was laughed at by people who couldn't see the value in some of his gigantic creations which were ahead of their time. But he didn't allow other people's negativity stop him from accomplishing his goal of benefiting man by making him far more productive then he would have been otherwise.

He talks about his relationship with God and how he believed that God was with him to protect him and help him to succeed. LeTourneau lived his beliefs by helping others and starting a school called LeTourneau Collage. He had given 90% of his stock in his business to a foundation he started for the benefit of others. He is not overpowering with this but just lets his beliefs take a natural course through the book.

Overall I think anyone would really enjoy this book. It really was one of the more interesting biographies I have read. His life again proves that it doesn't matter what kind of education you have or where you are financially, the only thing that can stop you from fulfilling your dreams is yourself!

The first time I read Movers of Men and Mountains was when I started my undergrad work at LeTourneau University. I have since purchased probably ten copies because mine keep getting "borrowed". Go ahead and order two while you're ordering so you'll always have one to keep while sharing!

Everyone should read this book. Mr. LeTourneau is such an incredible inspiration to us all. The story is fantastic, the book is witty and interesting, and the message is life-changing.

As a LeTourneau University Graduate, I felt compelled to read this book so I could learn more about the man who founded my school. I was impressed by the things he accomplished, witnessed, and experienced in his life. The flow of the book was great and I had trouble putting it down. Truly this man is an inspiration to all men of faith who feel they should do more for God in the workplace.

If we are to trust military historian Richard Connaughton's account, the Japanese forces that invaded the Philippines shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor were fortunate that they faced Douglas MacArthur and not some competent and cautious general like Joseph Stilwell. MacArthur, writes Connaughton, "was a distant, remote, suspicious, and brooding man whose ego set him apart from others in the services."

There's no news in that assessment--MacArthur was infamous long before the Japanese attack for his imperious manner and sense of infallibility, and during the siege of Corregidor he earned the nickname "Dugout Doug" for secluding himself in a bunker far from his troops. What does come as news is in Connaughton's in-depth analysis of MacArthur's multifaceted failings as commander of American forces in the Philippines, which include his refusal to accept intelligence reports on the whereabouts and strength of his enemy, his failure to integrate Filipino forces effectively, and his strategically inept forward defense--all of which afforded an undersize Japanese invading force a comparatively easy victory.

Connaughton, a retired colonel in the British Army, has no particular stake in defending or disparaging MacArthur, around whom stands a lively literature both pro and con. In fairness, he observes, the American defense of the Philippines was doomed in any event; and, he adds, "MacArthur made monstrous blunders but it was not all his fault; he had a lot of help." His book throws new light on a crucial episode in the history of World War II, and it is likely to excite debate among students of military history. --Gregory McNamee

                                  Book Description

MacArthur and Defeat in the Philippines is a riveting portrait of General Douglas MacArthur—perhaps America's greatest and very likely most controversial generals at one of the critical moments of World War II—by an expert on the war in the Philippines.

For many, Douglas MacArthur was a general to be ranked with Grant and Lee; for others he was much bluster and some cowardice, the "Dugout Doug" who abandoned his troops at Corregidor. The truth, according to military historian Richard Connaughton, lies somewhere in the middle.

Douglas MacArthur was born into a military family in 1880, and the need to measure up to the heroic example set by his father would be the driving force behind his career. But MacArthur's best qualities would forever be undone by his arrogance, vanity, deviousness, and a truly breathtaking capacity for making enemies—FDR chief among them—and so, when MacArthur arrived in the Philippines in the mid-30s it was as an exile from Roosevelt's anger. The Philippines were something of a family business for the MacArthur clan (his father had distinguished himself there at the turn of the century), and MacArthur's attitude toward the pre-war situation smacked of the military equivalent of papal infallibility. Against all the odds, he assured both Washington and the Philippine government of the islands' defensibility in the case of a Japanese attack, and he consistently underestimated Japanese militarism and overestimated the strength and readiness of the Philippine army. In holding these views, Connaughton argues, MacArthur was proceeding on a notion which had as much romance to it as military good sense. Willfully blind to the impending crisis, and brashly confident of his own powers, the Philippines and MacArthur's troops were vulnerable to attack when it came finally in late December of 1941.

Connaughton's extensive research and compelling narrative come together to paint a judicious portrait of a courageous general and deeply flawed man. MacArthur and Defeat in the Philippines is a must-have for anyone with an interest in modern history.

4 out of 5 stars Puncturing the myth of the great MacArthur.......2007-04-01

I have always found it interesting that historians are afraid to attack the MacArthur myth of invincibility. Much like Custer,MacArthur's reputation has only grown over the years into one of almost mythic status as the victor of the war in the Pacific and the battle of Inchon in the Korean War. The facts are that a 100,000 strong U.S.-Filipino Force fighting a defensive battle over difficult terrain was defeated by a Japanese force of 20,000 and MacArthur somehow came out a hero because of his thousands of communiques stating that millions of Japanese were swarming over his tiny band of ill-trained (due to him) troops. The funniest/strangest tidbit in the book regards that fact that MacArthur's HQ listed German pilots in Messerschmits attacking them because of course Japanese couldn't have built a proper attack plane much less fly it with their poor eye sight! The commander at Pearl Harbor wasn't a hero or the British commander at Singapore. Those men were castigated and in the case of the British commander interned. Should MacArthur have taken responsibility and allowed himself to be captured? A good question. FDR thought it would have been humiliating for the country and so the architect of the biggest US defeat ever? was saved. This book traces all of MacArthur's disasterous missteps that led to the U.S.'s terrible and in no way inevitable defeat. The fact that MacArthur left the islands with $500,000 of the locals money is sad and distasteful. Thank god Truman put this crazy, egomanic in his place when he did.

3 out of 5 stars Romanticism of Duty and Downfall.......2005-04-21

Richard Connaughton examines General Douglas MacArthur's military involvement in the Philippines before and during the early activities of US involvement during World War II. MACARTHUR AND DEFEAT IN THE PHILIPPINES is the prequal to Connaughton's THE BATTLE FOR MANILA, a straightforward assessment of the liberation of the Philippines in February 1945, and captures a more detail depiction of MacArthur's experience in Manila and what brought him to the islands as a child when his father was military governor as well as his last visit as Lieutenant General of the United States Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE). The most important aspect of the book centers on the different stages and steps in which MacArthur made at an attempt to build up the Philippine Army and his alliance with Philippine president, Manuel Quezon. But Connaughton suggests, in spite of the strenuous efforts to build a standing army in one area of confict, the Philippine military simply could not measure up to the strength of the Japanese military by the time the Philippines was attacked on December 8, 1941, a day after Pearl Harbor, which would leave one of many destructions to hit the islands before the war's end.

MACARTHUR DEFEAT IN THE PHILIPPINES is well-documented research. However, Connaughton includes accounts of MacArthur's personal life in the preceding chapters, which had been previously mentioned in other biographies, and provides an image behind the heroic figure in a way to exhibit his weaknesses as a military leader, especially during the conflict on Corregidor. Connaughton suggests that MacArthur's leadership style may have been something of the past -- a nineteenth-century style military leader who's time had come to make room for the changing of the guard; this may have been one of many reasons for the defeat on the islands and the overshadowing presence of Eisenhower. Despite numerous assumptions about MacArthur's leadership, one thing remains true, MacArthur`s undying love with the Philippines and his effort to protect the island and its people.

MACARTHUR AND DEFEAT IN THE PHILIPPINES is an essential addition for those interested in understanding the conflict in the Philippines during World War II as well as for General MacArthur history buffs. Although the book is not a definitive study, it provides a little more information that had not been previously published.

5 out of 5 stars Objective study of MacArthur' true roll in the Pillippines.......2002-06-18

I found this work on McArthur the best objective opinion of this military "icon" written to date. It was appropriate and necessary for such a work to be written by an academic historian who was not an American in order to obtain an objective view of such a controversial man in American history. I would like to see the author write a similar analysis of McArthur's generalship in the Korean conflict. I think the author could have gained a more complete understand of the reduction of the Air Corps forces if he had reviewed the fine article by Richard Slater found in the November 1987 issue of Airpower Magazine.

5 out of 5 stars What might have been.......2001-11-29

This book makes an excellent contribution to a chapter of history that has been overlooked. Connaughton shows that the seeds of a possible US-Japan confrontation in the Philippines were sown decades earlier. Could it have been anticipated? MacArthur's career has many examples of his military brilliance and personal bravery which are at odds with his dismal performance in the Philippines between December 1941 and April 1942. MacArthur had five years to prepare for the defense of the Philippines and his strategic plan called for Japan to land troops at Lingayen, exactly where they did. Yet lack of co-ordination among his senior military commanders and the US Navy, together with sudden changes to long developed defense plans allowed the Japanese to land virtually unopposed, making defeat inevitable.

It is intriguing to speculate how a successful defense, which should have been possible given the fact that the Japanese landed exactly where MacArthur expected them to, might have changed the course of World War II.

MacArthur is fortunate that widespread US setbacks early in the war neccesitated a national hero and allowed him the opportunity to restore his reputation. Even today there are many people who cannot accept the idea that MacArthur made any mistakes, as other reviews of this book make clear. Perhaps another writer will one day tell us why MacArthur was so convinced that the Chinese would not attack across the Yalu during the Korean war. This mistake resulted in a massive setback for the UN forces and added years to that war.

1 out of 5 stars Well Written, But Misconceived.......2001-09-19

This is another in a long line of dispise MacArthur books.
Here are a few of its misconceptions:
                                  1. Mac Arthur was a great hero of World War I - virtually the only general officer who actually led his troops into action on the Western front. His personal courage was unquestionable, and should not have been called into question during the battle for the Philippines.
                                  2. At that time (1941/42) he was the Commanding General of the allied forces in the Philippines, just as Eisenhower was in Europe in 1944/45. How much time did Ike spend on the beaches of Normandy in June of 1944 or in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge? Yet MacArthur was called "Dugout Doug" for not managing the defense of the Philippines from a fox hole on Bataan. This has always been utter nonsense!
                                  3. In December 1941 MacArthur was as bereft of intelligence information from the War Department as were his counterparts in Hawaii.
                                  4. His defensive operations were dictated by "War Plan Orange," - originally developed by the War Department during the 1920's and still in effect in 1941/42 - which required a retreat into the Bataan Peninsula until the Philippine defense forces could be relieved by reinforcements from the U.S., following a victory over the Japanese Navy in the mid Pacific. Pearl Harbor forclosed such a naval victory for six months and thereby doomed the defense of the Philippines.
                                  5. In spite of their mutual dislike President Roosevelt ordered MacArthur out of the Philippines to command allied forces in Australia. He, at least, recognized MacArthur's inestimable value as a military commander.
                                  6. Against all odds the Philippines held out for five months, until May 6, 1942 - the day of the Battle of the Coral Sea, and one month before the great American naval victory at Midway, which was the turning point of the war in the Pacific. The British surrendered Singapore in February 1942, within two months of the Japanese invasion of Malaya.
                                  7. Ultimately the criticisms of MacArthur come down, as usual, to the claim that he was "arrogant." Well, so what? Was not Alexander the Great arrogant? Was not Julius Caesar arrogant? How about Napoleon? Wellington? Field Marshall Montgomery? George S. Patton? Even Washington was accused by his enemies of being aloof and arrogant. Only U.S. Grant is remembered as a humble soldier. There is no particular military virtue in humility. Douglas Mac Arthur was one of the four or five truly great strategic geniuses in American military history. He desreved his pride. What's more, his self confidence was, without doubt, an essential element in his military genius. It's time to stop criticising him for being who he was.

Wasáse Indigenous Pathways of Action and Freedom By Taiaiake Alfred

The word Wasáse is the Kanienkeha (Mohawk) word for the ancient war dance ceremony of unity, strength, and commitment to action. The author notes, "This book traces the journey of those Indigenous people who have found a way to transcend the colonial identities which are the legacy of our history and live as Onkwehonwe, original people. It is dialogue and reflection on the process of transcending colonialism in a personal and collective sense: making meaningful change in our lives and transforming society by recreating our personalities, regenerating our cultures, and surging against forces that keep us bound to our colonial past."

                                      Book Description

Prepared in cooperation with Disney Development Company, this book deals exclusively with aspects of the design, construction or operation of buildings for which even relatively minor errors can have devastating results when the building is located in a hot, humid climate. Disney's consistent adherence to the principles outlined in this manual has dramatically reduced problems in its new construction. The information presented combines the experience of CH2M Hill, the largest environmental engineering firm in the U.S., and Disney, one of the premier facility planning and management firms in the world. Key issues covered include indoor air quality problem factors; hot humid climate considerations; new building failure; and a model for future success. Specifically addressed are schematic design, design development, final design, construction, and post-construction startup and system commissioning. The concepts and approaches presented are those which have proven successful in designing and operating problem-free indoor building environments in hot and humid locations.
