Customer Reviews:
Great for the first time traveller to Italy.......2004-06-25
I am finding this book extremely helpful in my "discovery" of Venice and the surrounding area. This is not a guide book, but does offer many basic things to know with good explanation. The resource text is small so be aware of this. I photocopied the sections I needed and made my own notes in planning my trip. Not for the quick fix obvious guide book info, but for people who want to know more dialogue about their upcoming adventure.
A mess!!.......2003-10-07
I have visited Venice & the Veneto more times than I can count since 1969, as well as Trieste & its surrounding area. It is an area of Italy I love dearly & intend to visit again. I have visited many of the places the author recommends, some more than once.
There is a lot of information in this book, but much of it is repetitive & not edited at all. Much of it can also be found in other guide books, in a much easier to read format. The "introductory" text is really where most of the useful information is to be found (in maddeningly small type) - not in the mishmash of articles that are given pride of place & significantly larger type. While endlessly telling the reader that this is not a book about food & wine, probably a quarter (or more) of the text involves those topics (& a lot of that is maddeningly repetitive.) The lack of editing is pathetic. For example, she allows the inclusion of 4 (or 5) different spellings for a particular dish (a special kind of ravioli w/ 40 ingredients, cialzons or is it ciarson or cjialzones or ??) - without telling the reader that it's the same thing. She recommends the same book in multiple places and prattles on a about it each time as if it does not appear elsewhere.
What is perhaps most unforgiveable in a book of 700 pages (& if uniform type were used throughout, would be at least 1,000 pages) is the lack of an index. Needlessly cumbersome.
What is good about the book is that the author's personality & love of the area comes through. But less self-indulgence is critical to make this book truly useful (or essenziale, as the author so often says). Basta!
For the bowerbird.......2003-02-22
Having really enjoyed Ms Kerper's book on Paris (also reviewed), I bought this with much anticipation, and was not disappointed.
The book combines articles collected from elsewhere, listings, personal views and insights. It is a true travellers' companion - useful prior to, during or after a visit, or when merely wishing and dreaming.
Not a guidebook in the traditional sense, don't buy this expecting to be guided through the tourist sites, where to stay etc. But if you are looking for something to accompany you on your journey, or even in the excellent listings section, a guide as to which guidebook might be best for you, then this is thoroughly recommended.

Book Description
Convective flow in the liquid phase is always present in a realistic process of freezing and melting and may significantly affect the dynamics and results of the process. The study of the interplay of growth and convection flow during the solidification has been an important subject in the broad fields of materials science, condensed matter physics, fluid physics, micro-gravity science, etc. The present book is concerned with the dynamics of free dendritic growth with convective flow in the melt. It systematically presents the results obtained in terms of a unified asymptotic approach in the framework of the interfacial wave (IFW) theory. In particular, the book explores the effect of the various types of convection flow on the selection and pattern formation of dendritic growth based on the global stability analysis.

Book Description
A collection of over three hundred quotations from the best-loved children's books of all time, What the Dormouse Said brings together the wit and wisdom of such classics as Charlotte's Web, Peter Pan, Eloise, Goodnight Moon, and many others. Organized around twenty-one topics-courage and faith, love and friendship-these lines remind weary adults not to lose sight of the values and virtues they learned as kids-to recognize the importance of being yourself, to respect nature, to live adventurously, and to be defiant when it counts.
With witty illustrations by Pierre Le-Tan, here is a book for new parents, grandparents, teachers and educators, and nostalgic baby boomers--a book that recaptures for all of us the joy of reading for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Heart to soul...good snippets of thoughts........2005-08-29
Yes, you can go back home. Most of these quotes come from books that either I remember reading as a young girl or that I read to my sons when they were growing up. As an adult/grown-up they have an entirely new meaning and perception that is heartrendering at times and at others very up lifting. I liked it and have purchased another to pass along.
treasure this.......2005-05-26
this is a book to treasure. Ms. Gash has done a remarkable job compiling it. I've purchased this book for at least a dozen of my male friends, and they're not even gay. Don't let this one fall between the cracks. The lessons are inspirational on many levels; Gash's selections, geared to adults, from the greatest children's books are consistently entertaining and thought-provoking, no small feat in these crazy, meaning-challenged times. I can't say enough about this unique, compelling book, unless I already have.
Excellent!.......2004-10-04
This is a really awesome idea. There are truly so many gems out there. Most of them you will remember reading too. I would like to see an even more indepth version with more children's books. But, what an awesome start. This could start the next great "Chicken Soup..." or "...for Dummies" movement in books.
A Nice Little Book.......2003-07-13
A good concept & a nice little book. I'd like to see this idea expanded into a larger work, with more children's books used as sources, & with subject & title indices. It'd be even better then!

Book Description
Begun in 1934, this final volume of Gurdjieff's trilogy, All and Everything, is a primary source for Gurdjieff's ideas, methods, and biography. Gurdjieff offers guidance to his "community of seekers," through a selection of talks given in 1930, autobiographical material crucial to understanding his ideas, and the incomplete essay "The Outer and Inner World of Man." Available for the first time in paperback, this is the ultimate piece of Gurdjieff's work that his numerous followers have been waiting for.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing much to discuss.......2006-08-28
This book isn't a book, it represents a means for transferring a higher knowledge. As such, its value for the reader depends on the readers essence, and his ability to use this means. To me, it has great value. For a casual reader it will be incomprehensible.
Good G, Worse Presentation.......2004-08-03
First part of this book is okay - reveals the mystical part of G. Rest is difficult to follow, probably because of the rigid translation. If someone who is familiar with G attempts to translate this book again, that will be a great service to humanity.
I could tastefully swallow G through "Views form the Real World" and "In Search of the Miraculius" than any of his books although "Belzebe" and "Meeting with.." are lot better than this "I am..".
G has a great influence in moulding my spiritual journey and I hate to see a book that's so badly translated and presented.
difficult to understand idea.......2003-03-31
This work takes many hours of self examination and doing what you find uncomfortable then examining your thoughts as to why.
The idea is to see what really is rather than what you automatically think and feel. This work will expand your abilities to look and see things from your individual perspective and react from a intergrated rather than a fractured mental process. The process allows you to see others in their fractured states and without understanding of why they react the way they do as they think from a small universe of habits.Once you become free of habitual thinkings and habits a third force comes into play and enlightens the struggle of your-self opposing nature-this is what is divine essence in this work.Keep in mind nature wants to receate you without your essence but knowing your indivuality fights nature.Using your personality to understand the essence of your indivuality is difficult and much like a search in a dark room but the third element is anchored by way of the sychronicity of events in your life and its time line but your mind must be free of its learned ways to see and be guided.Once your path is established un-natural- things will happen -it is magic!Fight nature and you knock it off balance and the laws of the universe begin to release their hold on your reality -sounds insane but you will be the most sane as you look out and see who has really examined their reality inside out and upside down. Good luck!
Translationus Horrificus.......2002-07-05
I would have to recomend that you skip this installment of the Guirdjeff triology. If you have read Beelzebub or Remarkable Men then there really is no need to waste your time lumbering through what can only be described as disjointed and stuttering translation. Perhaps the worst translation ever - which is saying alot considering Penguin's long lineage of word butchery. If you must read this - learn French and read the original or skip to the last third of the Penguin version. The last third is really the only information worth reading in either language. The first 100 or so pages has Gurdjieff is a rather false humility trying to matter a factly self grandize his life and work. Not the last taste of his remarkable ideas and life that you want on your lips.
Good stuff in the back.......2001-09-05
Gurdjieff was certainly a man ahead of his time and shares with us terrific insights and exercises that could possibly help raise one's consciousness. And I have no doubt that there are many people who have found a path of discovering about Self through his teachings. I can understand why Gurdjieff's teachings are taught directly from teacher to pupil. Be sure to do research about the groups of people around the world who pass on G's teachings. This book does not do justice to those teachings. It is only a glimpse of it.
Whats more, this book makes for difficult reading. Probably because the translation from Russian is not in the most concise and clear manner. In many instances, you will find that the parts of a normal english sentence now come in a very different order, and that one sentence can be full of interjections and are so long as to make one paragraph. I have an easy time conversing with people whose foreign accents and awkward english translation permeate their words. But I didn't have such an easy time of it when reading a translated version from Russian such as this. If you are used to reading books that are written in easy-to-read english, and find dialectic tones difficult to read through, than this book will indeed be a hard read.
If you want to learn a bit more from Gurdjieff's wisdom---his philosophy and cosmology, than try other books by Gurddjieff and/or his pupils. Search the web on his biography to know more about him. Choose your purchase well.

Book Description
This is a completely revised and updated edition of David Knighton's River Forms and Processes. Looking at the wide range of forms developed by natural rivers and the processes responsible for that development, the book combines empirical and theoretical approaches, and provides a critical assessment of the many schools of thought which have emerged for dealing with adjustment in the fluvial system. It is fully illustrated throughout by a superb range of figures, photographs and tables.
Customer Reviews:
Good text on fluvial processes........2005-12-11
This text is very informative and I really didn't appreciate it when I took my first fluvial geomorphology course. However as I became more acquanited with hydrology and environmental engineering, I also gained a better appreciation for this text. In my opinion, it is written for upper level undergrad and grad students because they will most likley get more from the text.

After last year's impressive "Let Them Eat Data: How Computers Affect Education, Cultural Diversity, and the Prospects of Ecological Sustainability", this new book of Bowers establishes him in my view firmly as the Noam Chomsky of Environmental Education. Just as the latter has convincingly shown that the entire spectrum of mainstream politics, from conservative to progressive, shares in fact the same basic convictions with regard to Western capitalism and the US's right to govern the world, Bowers has made clear that almost all educational theories that were elaborated in the last half a century, including those intending to be progressive and radical, ignore the cultural roots of the ecological crisis we face. However radical and critical they might be of the capitalist system and its exploitation, they still buy into the modern myths of anthropocentrism, linear progress, development and the autonomous individual as the basic social unit. By doing this and by largely ignoring the environmental degradation, these theories perpetuate the system they claim to criticise.
Against these theories of Dewey, Freire, Peter McLaren, Henry Giroux and others, Bowers sets his eco-justice-based approach. Its most fundamental element is the insight that any educational reform has to be set within the framework of sustainability. Or in Bowers' words: "Reform efforts that contribute to eco-justice must address the right of future generations to inhabit an environment that has not been diminished by the greed and materialism of the current generation." This is the sine qua non and whatever we endeavour as teachers has to be judged against this background: "environmental issues must have primacy in thinking about educational reform." Bowers is very clear about the fact that only a society that reduces its dependence on consumerism, technology and experts can repeal the commodification of all aspects of life and thereby stands a chance of survival.
I believe that Bowers is a unique voice in the discourse of environmental education/ education for sustainability. This is due to two aspects of his work: firstly, he has the courage to question deeply held believes and fundamental convictions which others either dare not touch or are unaware of. Secondly, he has recognised that educational practice cannot continue to be a specialist discipline ignorant of the wider world around it. Only if education, just like any other (professional) activity, is framed by the limited carrying capacity of our planet, will there be any chance of it fulfilling its potential.
