5 out of 5 stars Outstanding and spectacular views .......2005-06-17

This work presents outstanding, even spectacular views of the Land of Israel. It is remarkable how varied in its climate and geography such a small land is, and how great in beauty, also.

1 out of 5 stars Disregarding an international border.......2003-11-01

I dropped in at a Borders book store, spotted the series of Beaux Arts Editions, picked up the volume "Spectacular Israel" and sampled a couple of pages - without exception, breathtaking pictures. But then I looked at a map of Israel that stretched from the Mediterranian Sea to Jordan... no trace of the Occupied Territories. Someone who viewed the book before me must also have became aware of the terrible ommission and crudely sketched in the borders of the Gaza Strip and the West Bankand. I was outraged over this land grab (I know plenty of Jews support it) and reported my finding to the store manager (Borders). No matter how beautiful the book but when it so bluntly disregards international borders it has immediately lost its attraction, al least to me. There ARE priorities in my choices...

5 out of 5 stars Best photo book of Israel I have seen.......2003-01-09

This is by far the best photo book of Israel I have seen. It is worth every penny (or Shekel)!

      5 out of 5 stars Truly Spectacular.......2001-06-07

Israel is probably the most beautifull country in the world and this book does it justice. The photos are truly spectacular. It almost makes you want to hop on a plane right away. It's a bit expensive but you do get your money's worth. If you've havent been to Israel this book will make you regret it.

      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2000-05-01

I was looking for a picture book containing snapshots from all different parts of Israel. This book, shot by many Israeli photographers, captures the essence of the country by its photographs. In addition, it contains about 20 or so pages with informative history alongside the pictures. There are a variety of types of shots:numerous fold out pages, bird's eye views, and up-close pictures. I found Spectacular Israel to be a GREAT buy for the extensive collection of pictures. It is definately the best book out there for anyone looking to own a picture book on Israel.

          Book Description

Lively, informative, and easy-to-understand, this book is a fascinating read for scientists across many disciplines and the educated/interested layperson. Beautifully presented with eight pages of color illustrations, Giant Molecules: Here, There, and Everywhere addresses the nature and role of giant molecules, which are the"source"for polymer chains. Grosberg and Khokhlov explain what giant molecules are, how they are formed, where they are applied, and whythey are important in everyday life and in science. The simple, non-technical style is complemented by full-color illustrations.
A CD-ROM enclosed with the book provides simulation of typical behavior of polymers, which is an extremely useful tool for teaching purposes. This feature will be of special interest to the expert in polymers across many disciplines, including molecularbiology, materials science, physics, and chemistry. The CD-ROM also allows the user to create a broad variety of movies simulating an almost arbitrary polymer system, customized to the user's specific needs.
Giant Molecules presents the subject matter much more clearly than the standard scientific text. It provides a unique opportunity to grasp the most advanced methods of polymer physics with the guidance of world leaders in the field. The book features a foreword written by Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, a Nobel Prize Laureate, and each chapter in this fascinating volume is preceded by a quote from such notable sources as Goethe, St. Exupery, and Mark Twain. Written in a simple, non-scientific style, Giant Molecules should be understandable to interested readers at any level, and the color illustrations and CD-ROM add to the appeal of this lively book.

5 out of 5 stars This book explains things........2005-06-08

I am a physics professor working on semiconductor materials. Polymer is not my area, but they always attracts me a lot.
I can't believe this great book hasn't been reviewed yet. Yes, it is written by two Russian scientists. But who said Russians can only write rigorous math books? This book is not a monograph but for everyone interested in polymer physics, material or popular science. It explains a lot of phenomena in a clear, consise and humours language. There is a little math, not hard at all. Freshmen level calculus would be sufficient to understand the book. In fact, all through the book, the authors were showing the interactions between different factors. These factors are the reason that polymers have so many tantalizing and sometimes contradicting properties. To explain those, math is necessary.
The movies included in the accompanied CD are great, think about how much work is put on making them!

                        Book Description

Robert H. Jackson was one of the giants of the Roosevelt era: an Attorney General, a still revered Supreme Court Justice and, not least important, one of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's close friends and advisers. His intimate memoir of FDR, written in the early 1950s before Jackson's untimely death, has remained unpublished for fifty years. Here is that newly discovered memoir. Written with skill and grace, this is truly a unique account of the personality, conduct, greatness of character, and common humanity of "that man in the White House," as outraged conservatives called FDR. Jackson simply but eloquently provides an insider's view of Roosevelt's presidency, including such crucial events as FDR's Court-packing plan, his battles with corporate America, his decision to seek a third term, and his bold move to aid Britain in 1940 with American destroyers. He also offers an intimate personal portrait of Roosevelt--on fishing trips, in late-night poker games, or approving legislation while eating breakfast in bed, where he routinely began his workday. We meet a president who is far-sighted but nimble in attacking the problems at hand; principled but flexible; charismatic and popular but unafraid to pick fights, take stands, and when necessary, make enemies. That Man is not simply a valuable historical document, but an engaging and insightful look at one of the most remarkable men in American history. In reading this memoir, we gain not only a new appreciation for Roosevelt, but also admiration for Jackson, who emerges as both a public servant of great integrity and skill and a wry, shrewd, and fair-minded observer of politics at the highest level.

                        5 out of 5 stars Everyday Reader.......2004-06-13

Robert H. Jackson's insightful and previously unpublished observations of FDR in his presidency appear and are notated in Professor Barrett's THAT MAN in a very readable arrangement. Here is a true and objective account by one who was there and witnessed the inside of the FDR years in the White House. These Jackson writing's being posthumous adds rarity and validity to the work, making it a true find for serious Roosevelt and Roosevelt period historians.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Jackson Takes the Measure of FDR.......2004-05-13

This is a very interesting book which adds something of great value to the ever-growing mound of books on FDR. The fact that the manuscript was uncovered in a closet some 50 years after it was written is something for which students of FDR and presidential power can give thanks. It presents an entirely unique view and highly personal perspective on interacting with Roosevelt. Some of the most interesting discussion relates to interacting with FDR and his circle on an informal basis, such as on those fishing trips FDR savored. Also of great interest is the light the book throws on Jackson's own career--from the Treasury, to the SEC, then to Justice where successively Jackson was in the Tax Division, headed the Antitrust Division, became Solicitor General and Attorney General, and ultimately was elevated to the Supreme Court. Along the way we gain a fascinating perspective on such events as the Court Packing plan. The strongest chapter is on "That Man as Politician;" the most interesting "That Man as Companion and Sportsman." The editor has done an outstanding job in providing extensive notes, material from other sources to supplement the narrative, and in providing a biographical directory. But it is Jackson's own narrative skill that makes the book read so well. With a new major biography of Jackson himself on the horizon, this book becomes even more essential.

                        5 out of 5 stars A refreshing look at our 32nd President.......2003-09-10

As a long-time admirer of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, I am always intrigued by new books that are published regarding his life or his Presidency. A book from a contemporary source that has such "insider" knowledge of how FDR operated as Robert Jackson is a marvelous addition to the existing literature.

Jackson does not make any promises at the outset of the book except to be objective, and he certainly does meet this goal. Jackson describes FDR as President, Commander-in-Chief, and a human being, outlining his strengths as well as his weaknesses. Jackson makes no excuses for the President when his policies and knowledge did not seem to be best for the country (Jackson even criticizes FDR for his lack of economic knowledge and business sense).

I enjoyed Jackson's writing style (he is considered by many to be one of the best authors to ever sit on the Supreme Court of the United States), and I found that the book was easy to read.

I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in President Franklin Roosevelt - the stories and anecdotes given in the text make it highly readable, and the examples Jackson provides to detail his points are always logical and related to the subject at hand.

                              Book Description

"What was it that I did to survive? Where did those ideas come from? Where did I find the resolve to enact them? At the time of my release, I had no ready answers beyond that I did what seemed natural and necessary. In looking back, I realize that the peculiarities of my personality helped me to adopt strategies that allowed for the reclamation of my identity and my integrity while in the hands of barbarians. Yet what I did is neither remarkable nor courageous nor beyond the capabilities of any person that finds himself in similar circumstances. What I have come to believe is that there exists in all of us the potential to stand and fight and reclaim."
                              — William Sampson

On Sunday, December 17, 2000, Canadian engineer William Sampson stepped outside his house in Riyadh only to be hauled into a car and beaten by two Saudi men he didn’t know. Within an hour, he was incarcerated in one of the city’s most notorious jails. Within two months, he was tortured into a confession of responsibility for a wave of car bombings he did not commit. Sometime in that first year, he was sentenced to death in a secret trial. For two and a half years, Sampson was continually subjected to beatings and torture, convinced his death was just around the corner. Inept diplomacy failed him but human rights groups took up his cause and on August 8, 2003, he was finally freed in a controversial prisoner exchange. It wasn’t until February 2005 that Sampson’s name was officially cleared when a British inquest exonerated him of the crimes.

Angry, intelligent, and compelling, Sampson places his personal story within the context of the geopolitics that engineered his fate, and in doing so has crafted a searing exposé of Western foreign policy in the Arab Middle East.

                              From the Hardcover edition.

5 out of 5 stars A book you cannot soon forget.......2007-06-07

This is a fascinating book. It starts out a little detailed and slow but once you get into the debt of the story you cannot put it down. It is horrifying and graphic and tears at your insides as you read the passages. It takes you into the debts of his despair and suffering. You begin to realize how his remembering details such as he did actually helped him make it through the ordeal. You also realize it could happen to anyone.

This book will make you think about countries that pretend to be allies of the United States and Britain. Do we play into their politics only to save face with the world?

This book is uncomfortable to read yet offers hope for the human spirit.
                              I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Must read. Hated the book. Could not put it down. .......2007-04-14

What a horrifying story. Thank you very much, William Sampson, for telling about the terrible things that you experienced. I'm amazed at the incredible detail, dates, names, etc. I wonder how I would have done in a similar situation. The Canadian and British governments should be ashamed. The officials involved probably are.

5 out of 5 stars harrowing and compelling.......2007-04-11

This book about one man's torture at the hands of Saudi Arabian officials is a must-read. To cover up internal problems, Saudis blamed bombings of Westerners on other Westerners. They then tortured the arrested into confessing. It's hard not to be irate reading this book - Saudi Arabia strikes one as the most dangerous and vile country on Earth. Sampson's survival is testament to the human spirit, and his horrific tale makes for gripping and worrying reading.

                              5 out of 5 stars I Loved this Book!.......2007-02-16

Not often you pick up a book and have serious trouble putting it down. William Sampson's narrative of the circumstances and events that overtook him in that xenophobic wasteland of Saudi Arabia will send chills up your spine. A true hero, Sampson describes, in alarming detail, the torture and backward, self-serving mentality of his captors. His ordeal exposes the Canadian and British government's incrediable ignorance and willful lack of concern for one of it's citizens when in crisis in a foreign land. Even when faced with a death sentance (beheading), Sampson showed courage and resolve to not let his captors have the satisfaction of breaking his will.

This is a 'must read' book for anyone concerned with 'human rights', 'international relations' and 'politics.

5 out of 5 stars A Valuable Read on the Greatness of a Man.......2006-09-04

Like the book Night, by Elie Weisel, this book shows how even a man imprisoned can fight his captors with the strength of his mind (and body). Samson is challenged in ways many of us "soft" Americans cannot dream of; yet he rises to the challenges and finds ways to stay sane in an insane situation. He learns how he can live without even basic necessities (giving up books is harder than giving up food) so that his torturers cannot use these privileges against him. Samson shows us when he "fails" himself and when he triumphs.
To think that a citizen of a Western country can be abandoned by his country in order to keep good relations is an outrage that needs to be corrected. Samson shared with us his trial so that we might see the truth and perhaps others would be spared.
Thanks so much for this well written, eye-opening book. You are a true hero.

                                    Book Description

From the earliest days of the western frontier, women heeded the call to go west along with their husbands, sweethearts, and parents. Many of these women were attached to the army camps that dotted the prairies as wives, daughters, and camp followers, and some were active participants in the skirmishes and battles that took place as the burgeoning population of the United States surged into territory where Native Americans were once free to roam. She Wore a Yellow Ribbon tells the story of these women--Buffalo Soldiers, scouts, interpreters, nurses, and others who served their country in the early frontier.

The sixteen readings in this volume, all of which are newly selected for this fourth edition, and most of which are reproduced in their entirety, are organized around six debates:

Why is voter turnout low, and why is it declining?
Does the public's lack of political information matter?
What determines the vote, and to what extent do campaigns matter?
Is divided government intentional on the part of voters?
How much does politics affect party identification?
                                    Is the party system changing?

Niemi and Weisberg supply section introductions that weave the readings together, establish useful context, and help to sort out conflicting interpretations and diverging opinions that emerge across the chapters. Collectively, the readings and supporting essays in Controversies in Voting Behavior provide an illuminating look at some of the most lively and fascinating issues being debated in this field today.

3 out of 5 stars More Informative than Controversial.......2004-04-22

This volume collects influential articles in political science, dealing with issues that might be rather contentious, if you happen to be student or professor in the field. "Controversies" is hardly an accurate title for this book, except that some of these articles probably inspired two professors to argue with each other over the results of tedious multiple regression analyses of voting patterns. But many of the articles here are at least informative if you're interested in potentially important issues like voter turnout (and why it's so low in America), the political knowledge of the public, divided government, or party identification. The expert submissions will surely be of interest to the informed person with interests in the scholarly side of political science. But as is usual in the field, the writing is almost uniformly bland and pedantic (except for Robert "Bowling Alone" Putnam and a couple of others), making the collection quite tedious and repetitive overall. Book Description

Hood's travel memoir is a lyrical journey to places of great natural beauty and biological importance. Her stories reveal the vulnerability of natural places and the consequences of unsustainable exploitation. This inspiring work will be valuable for those interested in nature or travel memoirs, ethnographic writing, and for all who are concerned with the survival of our broader sense of place in the global environment.
