PBS viewers may recognize Frances Weaver from her "Midlife Musings" segments. A middle-aged widow, she encourages her contemporaries to go out and enjoy the world. This slender volume speaks to those who dream of exploring far-off (and not so far-off) places, but who lack confidence in their skills for coping with life away from home and familiar surroundings. With specific advice (start by exploring your own hometown) Weaver affirms that the real purpose of travel is to expand your horizons. This book would make a pleasant gift for a person newly widowed, divorced, or empty nester. Reader beware! This book motivated me to take a spur of the moment bargain excursion to London.

4 out of 5 stars A handy visual overview of various types of Castles.......2007-08-20

This is a spiffy little book that overviews medieval castles.

      * The ranks, titles and functions of the various people that owned and ran castles back in feudal times.
      * The different types of castles, with full color illustrations of their layouts, and individual strengths & weaknesses.
      * There's a map listing actual castles in the U.K., Europe, and Japan.
      * There's even a guide on how to read (and design) Heraldy Blazes and Coats of Arms.
      * The book is also 'internet linked' to a website in which you can enter page numbers of the book, and get a list of jumplinks to related websites.

Even though it's target audience is young adults, and even though it weighs in at a mere 92 pages, it's STILL a great little book.

It's a MUST HAVE book for the following readers:

      * Hardcore fans of games like WARHAMMER, AD&D, and other medieval-based role playing games (RPGs) and combat simulations.
      * Aspiring writers who'd like to read up on basic medieval castle dynamics before writing about such things.

Both categories apply to yours truly.

            Book Description

The great variety in structure and function of arthropod sensory organs is due to the huge number of species living in spatially and temporally different environments and to great variation in behavioral patterns. This atlas compiles the electron microscopic anatomy of arthropod sensory organophotoreceptors, chemoreceptors, and others in relation to function, behavior, and environment. The authors show how each sensory receptor is finely tuned to detect the necessary information in the arthropods surroundings and how the sensory receptors dynamically change their fine structures according to their functional and adaptational states. In each two-page spread of the book, electron or light micrographs are shown on the right, with diagrammatic illustrations and accompanying text on the left, in a format that is attractive and easy to understand. The atlas thus provides an important bridge between the physiology and morphology of arthropod sensory receptors.

Need a new class of functions? The authors of this full-service monograph offer a series of generalized functions perfectly adapted to heat conduction and transfer, with potential applications in astrophysics, probability, and other fields. The work is comprehensive and includes everything the mathematically adept need to understand the text. --Rob Lightner

              Book Description

The subject of special functions is rich and expanding continuously with the emergence of new problems encountered in engineering and applied science applications. The development of computational techniques and the rapid growth in computing power have increased the importance of the special functions and their formulae for analytic representations. However, problems remain, particularly in heat conduction, astrophysics, and probability theory, whose solutions seem to defy even the most general classes of special functions. On a Class of Incomplete Gamma Functions with Applications introduces a class of special functions, developed by the authors, useful in the analytic study of several heat conduction problems. It presents some basic properties of these functions, including their recurrence relations, special cases, asymptotic representations, and integral transform relationships. The authors explore applications of these generalized functions to problems in transient heat conduction, special cases of laser sources, and problems associated with heat transfer in human tissues. They also discuss applications to astrophysics, probability theory, and other problems in theory of functions and present a fundamental solution to time-dependent laser sources with convective-type boundary conditions. Appendices include an introduction to heat conduction, Fourier conduction, a table of Laplace transforms, and well-known results regarding the improper integrals. Filled with tabular and graphical representations for applications, this monograph offers a unique opportunity to add to your mathematical toolbox a new and useful class of special functions.

5 out of 5 stars A book of great use........2005-12-24

This book presents a thorough well written description of some very useful mathematical functions that are not available elsewhere except is numerous journal articles. The new functions presented in this book arise naturally out of some important problems in mathematical modeling. The book is extremely helpful in my work. In addition, it is well written and provides connections between the new functions presented and standard special functions. I expect that these function will become standard functions themselves given their usefulness in applications.

5 out of 5 stars Special function review.......2004-09-01

A book that special function researchers should have. Very clear and usable definitions with generalized extensions to many of the common special functions along with a good set of examples and applications. One would have to search many journals going back decades to collect the information presented as exemplified by the 331 references.

              Book Description

"Against the assault of laughter nothing can stand," Mark Twain once wrote. In this sixth volume in The Library of America's authoritative collection of his writings-the final volume of his fiction-America's greatest humorist emerges in a surprising range of roles: as the savvy satirist of The Gilded Age, the brilliant plotter of its inventive sequel, The American Claimant, and, in two Tom Sawyer novels, as the acknowledged master revisiting his best-loved characters. Also in this volume is the authoritative version of Twain's haunting last novel, No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger, left unpublished when he died.

The Gilded Age (1873), a collaboration with Hartford neighbor Charles Dudley Warner, sends up an age when vast fortunes piled up amid thriving corruption and a city Twain knew well, Washington, D.C., full of would-be power brokers and humbug. The novel also gives us one of Twain's most enduring characters, Colonel Sellers, who returns in The American Claimant (1892), an encore performance that moves beyond the worldly satire of its predecessor into realms of sheer inventive mayhem.

Tom Sawyer Abroad (1894) and Tom Sawyer, Detective (1896) extend the adventures of Huck and Tom. No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger (1908), an astonishing psychic adventure set in the gothic gloom of a medieval Austrian village, offers a powerful and uncanny exploration of the powers of the human mind.

4 out of 5 stars Mark Twain's Lesser Known Novels by Library of America.......2004-11-21

This collection of five Mark Twain novels is the sixth volume of his works published by the Library of America (LOA). Once again, the LOA has performed their usual impressive work of scholarship and quality craftsmanship.

The first five volumes comprised his classics and well known short stories, novels and essays. With this volume, the reader is introduced to five of his least famous novels. The Gilded Age was his first novel (1873) and the only one he ever collaborated with another writer on (Hartford neighbor Charles Warner). The other four books were written toward the end of his career (from the 1890's on).

Three of the novels were sequels : "The American Claimant" was itself a successor to "The Gilded Age" as it follows the further misadventures of Colonel Sellers; "Tom Sawyer, Abroad" and Tom Sawyer, Detective" continues the exploits of Tom and Hucklebery Finn. The final book, "The Mysterious Stranger" was never published in Twain's lifetime as it reflects the tragic darkness of his family life with it dark haunting gloom.

This volume is a must for the Mark Twain fan (along with the other five LOA volumes of his writings). While I do not consider this collection to be Mark Twain at his best, even Mark Twain at 3/4 strength is better than most other writers at their peak. The humorous satire of human nature (and of politics in the first two novels) is present in all five books.

5 out of 5 stars Be afraid--be very, very afraid.......2002-03-25

I have to confess that I seem to be about the only person on the face of the planet who's not a big Mark Twain fan. But after the Enron debacle, and in light of the affluenza sweeping our consumerist society, I recently went back to reread *The Gilded Age*. The more things change, the more they stay the same! Twain's dissection of unscrupulous tycoons wanting to get richer, corrupt senators jumping in bed with the tycoons by cutting them sweet political deals, and get-rich crazy middle class types who kiss up for their cut of the pie could've all been taken from last night's news. A brilliant and occasionally hilarious portrait of what happens to individuals in a souless age mesmerized by the almighty buck. A good warning to us today. I wish it could be required reading for everybody coming of age in these fast-paced times. (It's probably too late to do much good for Enron-type execs.)

One of the bonuses of this Library of America edition is that it includes *The American Claimnant,* a sequel to *Gilded Age*. I'd never heard of it before, and in all honesty didn't enjoy it as much as *Gilded*. But it's a good read for anybody with an afternoon of leisure time.

5 out of 5 stars Will help thousands of families !!.......2006-03-09

I found Sandi's book to be informing , educational & truthful , Sandi is sharing her heart for all blended families like herself. Sandi shares those precious moments talking one on one , family meetings & vacations. She shares how she encourages her kids to talk to her , open up & tell her how they feel & what they think. The book has kids top ten list , her kids give advice on going through the process of a blended family. What helped most they kept close to the church & encouraged the kids to be involved in youth groups. A hard chapter for me as a reader was change day. Moving from house to house weekly or monthly, waking up wondering which house you're in. Sandi's advice is you just have to try to put the kids interests ahead of your own emotions & preferences & try to do what's right for them. Blended families are struggling through some difficult issues often heading into uncharted territory. They need help from churches that will acknowledge their presence , prayer support for them & help them find those who have been through the same trails & who can come alongside offer help & encouragement . This is a great book for blended families offering what Sandi & Don did right & wrong . Sandi said hang in there I'm here to tell you the result can be wonderful. Whether it's a blended family or the daily struggle to keep a balance between job & family , every woman experiences blending on some level. Some folks just can't forgive Sandi , I'm here to tell you God has forgiven her & restored Sandi back to the church , she is whole again. The question why Sandi won't refer to her ex husband by his name. I'm divorced I never refer to my ex husband , most divorced people refuse to talk about those painful & hurtful years. Let go give Sandi a break !! Rule 3 on kids top ten list : Don't talk about the other parent if you can't say something nice. Thank you Sandi for writing this book & sharing your heart , this book will help so many families.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful support to families in crisis.......2006-03-09

Life in the Blender is a delightful book which can be of use to all families who have gone through the turmoil of a divorce and remarriage situation. Through it's easily read pages, Sandi Patty intertwines some of the what works and what doesn't, and she ought to know, as she doubled her family size through re-marriage, and then by one more with adoption.

What is evident is that she and her husband Don were able to create is a loving environment, where each child could find structure and love in abundance. She shares humorous stories and creates modern parables to delight and provoke thought. There are poignant pages with the sharing of the children with their other parent and grandparents. The heartache is almost palpable. I really appreciated reading how respectful the adults treated each other through the process. Sandi refers to her former spouse as my ex-husband instead of using his first name, as her son's name is the same. While this might to some seem peculiar, it makes the reading of the book easier.

Divorce and remarriage is not an issue that Christians ordinarily face up too. Until the church provides support to those in need in its own body, those in crisis will struggle. I am glad that Sandi is able to provide support to the hurting with this book. I sincerely hope this book will help fill that need.

1 out of 5 stars Another Fundamentalist Hypocrite Wants to Reclaim Her Crown.......2006-03-05

For years we watched America's Christian Sweetheart sing at Billy Graham Crusades and tell us how we should live our lives according to the Word of God. Blah blah blah. Then America's Christian Sweetheart has an extramarital affair. Fast forward. Uh, been down this road before with a few self-righteous televangelists and another so-called Christian singer named Amy Grant. And, of course, they always right the wrong by publicly getting caught and then publicly apologizing to their fans and then publicly doing a "I'm forgiven tour" and then there's an album or a book. A book like this. With her nuclear soccer mom grin and her kids gathered 'round strategically poised and posed for America, Sandi Patty rises from the ashes of adultery and emerges from the den of iniquity, apparently pure again. Blah, blah, blah. Hey, you wanna really serve Jesus? Take the cash you would spend on this book and send it to the poor person of your choice. Don't make these so-called messengers of Christ any richer than they already are. Amen.

                3 out of 5 stars Practical advice.......2006-02-25

The target audience of Sandi Patty's "Life in the Blender" is people in second marriages with children from their first marriages. Patty knows what she is talking about because she has four kids from her first marriage, three step-kids from her husband Don Peslis' first marriage, plus one adopted son.
Sandi Patty gives practical advice from personal experience on how to talk to your kids, how to handle the transition when it's time for your kids to visit their other parents, and how to handle discipline issues. She is not shy about admitting the mistakes she and Don made, especially early in their marriage.
If you read Sandi Patty's previous book, "Broken on the Back Row," you will notice that she repeats a number of things from that book in this second book. That was a little irritating. In the final chapter of "Life in the Blender," Patty goes into detail about the time her whole family became infected with head lice. The details were more than I needed to know. I think I felt itchy after reading that part.
There is a question I would like to ask Sandi Patty. Why won't she refer to her ex-husband, John Helvering, by his name? It is very conspicuous that she only calls him, "my ex-husband" or "my kids' Dad," although she indicates that they are on civil terms now. However, Patty does refer to Don Peslis' ex-wife by her first name, Michelle. Unless Helvering asked Patty not to use his full name, the fact that she won't leaves me wondering.

5 out of 5 stars Dictionary of Palestine Conflict.......2005-02-19

Update notes: (a) the full title is "Dictionary of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Culture, History, and Politics". (b) there are 2 volumes..."Volume 1: A-J" (pages 1-259) and "Volume 2: K-Z" (pages 260-517). (c) there are 4 different ISBNs: ISBN 0-02-865977-5 (2 vol. set hardcover); ISBN 0-02-865978-3 (vol.#1); ISBN 0-02-865979-1 (vol.#2); ISBN 0-02-865996-1 (e-book). This revised 2005 English-language edition was originally issued in French in 2002. By "revised" I mean that its "Yasir Arafat" article even mentions his death in November 2004, and printed in December, just before the start of the early 2005 Sharon-Abbas rapprochement. A very impressive compilation of about 1,500 articles relating to the overall Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Some articles contain only two sentences of commentary; others are two pages long. It details not only dozens of political parties throughout the Middle East, but it also provides short biographies of even obscure politicians involved in the Palestine controversy throughout the world -- past and present. It provides the names and dates of various Israeli military operations throughout Palestine. It lists the relevant UN resolutions. It details the main issues at the annual Arab League summits between 1964-2004. Obscure Islamic terrorist (err, "liberation") groups are noted in separate articles. It has that "European" writing style: each sentence is written tightly, void of wordiness and each most informative. It is written in an unbiased, neutral manner. Islamic militants will be disappointed that it doesn't editorialize in condemning everything regarding Israel (err, "the Occupied Zionist Territory"). If there is a shortcoming to this dictionary, it fails to allow the strident "intensity of belief" flavor of the militant Palestinian perspective to come through. But then this is a dictionary, not a passionate political tract. I find that some of the "why" is missing besides the listed "fact." For example: (a) While "Rashidun" is defined as the first four "rightly guided caliphs" who followed the Muslim Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), it is not mentioned "why" the first four are called the "rightly guided"...that is because they were the only caliphs to personally know Muhammad and thereby are considered amongst all of the caliphs to possess the best understanding of his teachings. (b) Regarding its "Arab-Israel War (1948)" article it notes that Palestinians objected to the creation of the state of Israel because they considered it a "violation of their right to self-determination." Okay, that is a Western "politically correct" statement; too bad they didn't give the true reason: that Muslims know that Muhammad expelled the Jews from the Arabia region and therefore no independent Jewish state can be birthed from Muslim territory. (c) Regarding its article on Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, while it notes that "His visit to the Temple Mount...in September 2000 sparked Muslim riots", it fails to give "why" the Jew wanted to cross the road: Sharon believed that the 1948 cease-fire guaranteed that Jews could visit the Temple Mount, and so he requested and obtained approval from the Palestinian Authority prior to his stroll (Bodansky, "The High Cost of Peace," p.353-4). But, this is a dictionary, not an encyclopedia. There are few photographs; you get your money's worth in the well-written words. Fortunately it does not provide much "ancient" Biblical history to the Palestinian conflict; concentrating instead on events developing since the start of the 1880s Zionist movement to settle Jews in Palestine, and primarily since the 1940s -- but strong even in the 2000-2004 Intifada era. It concentrates on the "political" disputes and personalities, rather than on any lengthy analysis of the religious chasm between the peoples. Given its price, you will probably want to view it at your library before buying it. I don't know of a substitute for it.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent reference.......2007-03-10

Just what it says on the box - an excellent reference, whether planning your trip or on the road. Complete with location maps and National Grid references.

5 out of 5 stars a great work made better.......2004-11-28

Aubrey Burl's previous works were showing a wee bit of dating. As carbon dating become more accurate, you are seeing these ancient rings grow older in age instead of younger as they anticipated. While Burl's previous works were amazing, this long awaited "update" of this information, as well as addition information on more recent excavations make this is must. Yes, it expensive. But it's worth every penny. There are new insight in the the purpose of the rings of stone, a new interpretation of Calanais (sorry, as a Scot I refuse to call it Callanish!) and Stonehenge

The beautiful book is loaded with hundreds of photos, explores the ancestry, methods of construction and why they were abandoned after thousands of years of use.

Marvelous work made even better by bringing the information up to date.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Scholarship, Fine Writing.......2003-02-12

I am not accustomed to purchasing so expensive and specialized a book, but in the early autumn of 1979, I had the privilege of working on a Scottish dig run by Dr. Burl, and I have long admired his scholarship and dedication---and this revision is, simply put, GREAT! The depth of information is astounding, and I found the the presentation engrossing, the subject fascinating, and the style quite readable---certainly NOT only for students or devotees of archaeology. I can't recommend this one highly enough---it may seem like something of an indulgence for your personal library, but it's worth every penny. Alas, the book is far to heavy to carry about in one's luggage, but I've already marked at least two dozen sites that I want to visit the next time I cross the Atlantic. In the meantime, settle back in a comfortable chair and get ready to cast your mind back a couple of millenia...

5 out of 5 stars An essential resource.......2001-07-07

I recently returned from a vacation over in Ireland/Scotland/Wales where for 4 weeks I and 2 of my friends researched and visited stone circles throughout the Isles. Aubrey Burl definitely has written an essential resource you should pick up if you have the intentions of going to see them. He touches on a great number of "out of the way" stone circles not widely known in areas and gives precise directions on how to get to them. It is almost like a treasure hunt, you never knwo what is around the corner in Aubrey's book! A definite must get for the stone circle enthusiast. Don't even think about putting this book down. Get a map, get this book, and go hunting for these great spiritual centers.

                    4 out of 5 stars The BEST learning/referance peice I have....thats about it.......2000-12-17

This is truly by nature a great reference book. This 400 pager is most certainly not a light read. It is the kind of book that should accompany the libuary of a person whom needs a truly great source material peice, and point of complete infomation. This book is full of references to sites and works of other peoples and times. In his true old fasion and nature, Dr. Burl make many comments, not only on current data and modern ideas, but also speaks and illustrates alot of past records of the 17 and 18 hundreds. However, this is in no way a book on the history of studies, but realy is a truly up to date compilation of material, material that stretches far and wide into many disciplines. This book should though be aprouched by one that does already know and understand a little (if not a great deal) on stone circles. A great addition of the 'Die hard', but the new people may get a bit lost. For the writter likes to wander just a little, and makes asumpsions that the reader knows just what site he is talking about and in what era of neolithic/bronze age is in question. This book is realy for the people whom want to realy expand their material in this field. I would say "expand their knowladge", but this not only greatly does so, but also offers the access to the masses of referance and source notes that one could follow up on ones self.

However, The reason that I give this a 4 star, and not a 5, is that there are 'some' problems with it, which do not 'quite' make it PERFECT. Because of the masses of refering that Dr.Burl makes to all his material, the trend and flow of the text makes this at times an un-smooth read. (if there was such a word) Because this book is structured by area, and not by era, (which is probebly the easiest way to understand the Archaeology of stone circles). What would be a great help, is drawings, Archaeo plans, or some form of diagrams of the shapes he trys to discribe. Plan illistrations of the stone circles would help a great deal in relaying the infomation as intended. not here folks. I think that it is best to use this as a referance book, and not as a smooth read. This in fact is a very positive and greatly admired notion, one that I like in this book. Another great problem is one of punctuation. I know that my spelling is problematic, but the continues lack of a comma in this work often makes it VERY difficalt to understand what the exact message is, if one was trying to read with a smooth flow, and so I at times might need to spend a long time on just one page. I have realy liked reading this book, and leared a hell of alot from its text that does in fact go very well. Just be warned that a most perfect knowladge of local name places of every corner of britain is needed to follow him, and therefore, quite a bit of wandering and un-needed refering sometimes clouds over the general message. However, I do realy love this book. I think it is a most exelent 'back-bone' to one's serious study of this subject. Most deffinetly a must for the 'heavies' amongest us, a little warning to the un-propeared and the 'just learning'. A most complete, in all ways, standed and top notch peice of material. I feal that it is prehaps the collection pot of the cream of his life work. It certainly is my favorate on my shelf.

                          Book Description

IUCN, WWF and the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have developed this guidebook to assist marine protected area (MPA) managers in assessing the performance of their MPA. Based on this assessment, it shows how necessary changes can be made to improve management measures. It presents a flexible approach that can be used in many types of MPA and offers a variety of specific biological, socio-economic and governance indicators to measure the effectiveness of management actions in achieving MPA goals and objectives.
