        Book Description

This new edition of Bioenergetics presents a clear and up-to-date explanation of the chemiosmotic theory and covers mitochondria, bacteria, and chloroplasts. It takes account of the many newly determined structures, such as ATP synthase and the two photosystems of photosynthesis, that provide molecular insight into chemiosmotic energy transduction. This edition includes additional color figures of protein structures and many newly drawn illustrations designed to enable the reader to grasp the fundamental insights that are derived from knowing the structure. Every chapter has been extensively revised and updated and a new chapter on the study of the bioenergetics of mitochondria in the intact cell is included to satisfy the enormous interest in this topic. Written for students and researchers alike, this book is the most current text on the chemiosmotic theory and membrane bioenergetics available.

                                  Book Description

Model reduction is an important engineering problem in which one aims to replace an elaborate model by a simpler model without undue loss of accuracy. The accuracy can be mathematically measured in several possible norms and the Hankel norm is one such. The Hankel norm gives a meaningful notion of distance between two linear systems: roughly speaking, it is the induced norm of the operator that maps past inputs to future outputs. It turns out that the engineering problem of model reduction in the Hankel norm is closely related to the mathematical problem of finding solutions to the sub-optimal Nehari-Takagi problem, which is called "the sub-optimal Hankel norm approximation problem" in this book. Although the existence of a solution to the sub-optimal Hankel norm approximation problem has been known since the 1970's, this book presents explicit solutions and, in particular, new formulae for several large classes of infinite-dimensional systems for the first time.

4 out of 5 stars A beautiful novel of Ancient Carthage.......2002-04-17

Salambo is Gustav Flaubert's carefully researched "novelization" of the actual conflict (241 - 238 B.C.E.) between Hamilcar Barca and Carthage on the one hand and an army of disaffected former mercenaries on the other. It was first published in 1862.

Flaubert envisages a terrified city reduced to human sacrifice in an effort to save itself. Outside the mighty walls roils a horde of mercenaries bent on the utter annihilation of Carthage. All manner of horror (described in at times gruesome detail) unfolds during the war - torture, crucifixion, murder, cannibalism, human sacrifice.

The mercenaries are led by Matho, a charismatic Gaul of immense strength - but with a fatal flaw. A chance meeting with the exquisite Salambo, high priestess of the goddess Tanit and daughter to Hamilcar Barca, nearly proves to be his undoing. He becomes obsessed with her. He contrives to steal the veil of Tanit - an icon sacred to Carthage, without which the city will surely perish. Only Salambo, or so it seems, can save the nation. But at what terrible cost?

This wonderful little gem caught me almost completely by surprise. I actually did not read it but listened to the audio cassette. I would at times sit in the drive way outside my house unable to stop listening. While at first glance not what one might expect from one of the masters of French Realism (who wanted to hold up a mirror to the world and show both the beauty of the sky and the filth of the mud in the street), it is in fact a meticulously researched and accurate recreation of the world of Carthage after the First Punic War-- a world about which nogt enough is known. So it is in that sense, entirely in keeping with Falubert's body of work.

When this book was published there had been a surge of interest in Carthage (See also The Young Carthaginian by G. A. Henty). Surprisingly, to me anyway, many of the Victorians preferred the Carthaginians to the bully boy Romans -- perhaps because their sympathy ultimately lay with the vanquished Greek civilization.

5 out of 5 stars The search for the forgotten realm........2000-07-06

It seems at least surprising why Flaubert, a master of Realism, spent several years writing this novel placed in Carthago. At his time it was a very controversial issue, even though celebrated by critics and public, because of its sensuality which was criticised by eminent archaeologists. Gustave Flabert had made a very careful research, including several travels to Tunisia to figure out the exact settings of his plot, and thus he defended his work firmly. In the end, years afer, many of his proposals turned out to be certain. He took up this exhausting job in order to fulfill his taste for the exotic and even the grotesque in life. The main theme of the novel is the revolt of the mercenaries engaged by Carthago througout the Punic Wars against Rome. This army was formed by a bizarre variety of men from all over the Mediterranian lands, and like every army, they were loved at war and feared at peace. The novel begins with a feast given to honour their many years of sacrifice and loyalty. But soon after they are put apart to an inner region, feared by the citizens of the capital city. It is also the story of Matho, a Libian soldier, and Salambo, the Princess from Carthago. But this is just the starting line for Flaubert's displaying of his careful seek for the right word, le mot juste, and his amazing talent for showing the inner motivations of his characters. Summing up, this is a wonderful historic novel which does not only stand on long forgotten facts but on the rich depth of his characters. That is what makes it contemporary and close.

                                                    Book Description

Beginning with Nin's arrival in New York, this volume is filled with the stories of her analytical patients. There is a shift in emphasis also as Nin becomes aware of the inevitable choice facing the artist in the modern world. "Sensitive and frank...[Nin's] diary is a dialogue between flesh and spirit" (Newsweek). Edited and with a Preface by Gunther Stuhlmann; Index.

Anais Nin began a letter to her father, on the ship that carried her, her mother and brothers, away from him, away from Europe and to New York City. She was 11 at the time. The letter was never sent (her mother did not think it appropriate), but instead developed into a diary that would become legendary by the time she reached her late 20s. Henry Miller helped feed the legend by stating that, once published, Anais Nin's diary would take its place beside the great literary revelations of the century. Upon publication in the 1960s, many critics, and audiences alike, felt that the acclaim was justified. Though original plans called for the publication of only one volume, demand was so great that seven volumes in all would be eventually be published; then, of course, the "unexpurgated" versions would be published in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

In the first volume of the diary, we meet Anais Nin living outside of Paris with her husband, banker Hugh Guiler. She has just published her study of DH Lawrence and is about to meet Henry Miller and his fascinating and dramatic wife, June. All characters from the previous volume factor into this second installment, but many new people are introduced. Gonzalo, a Peruvian Marxist, and his wife Helba, are the most interesting new characters. Famous Freudian analyst Otto Rank is also depicted. Anais works with Rank in New York; she struggles to understand whether she is meant to be an analyst or a writer. Yes, in what strikes me as an odd occurence, Anais Nin - with no formal training - is allowed to take on patients.

Of the first two volumes, I'd have to say that this is my favorite. There is more movement, and with World War II as a backdrop, there is more social conscience on display. "Politics, all of them," Anais writes in an astute observation that, sadly, is still true 70 years later, "seemed rotten to the core and all based on economics, not humanitarianism." Indeed, in this volume Anais seems more aware of the world around her and less preoccupied with herself, well, a little less so. But, as with all other volumes in this series of diaries, and just about all of Anais Nin's literature, the reader is wise to look more for poetic truth than literal reality. What I mean is, the diaries of Anais Nin are most likely not verbatim transcriptions of the manuscript versions (the difference between this original series and the unexpurgated versions pretty much proves this point). They are something closer to being stylized, masterfully edited "memory books" and persona self-creation. But it's an entertaining, romantic, and often beautiful persona.

This book has so much wisdom. I find myself reading it very slowly to stop and really think about what she has to say. This volume of her diary is more disconnected than the one prior, but the insight is much more profound.

--Anais Nin.

This book was a good read. Not the best ever war story told, like some of the reviews would have you believe, but good enough to hold my attention for one entire night of reading.

The main annoying part with this book was the fictionalized thoughts and conversations given to the Japanese who perished on the Shinano. Obviously, there's no way to ever know what these people actually said or thought. It makes it all so less real, and more like a novel, to try to animate them with artificial conversations and thought processes.

The most fascinating aspect of this tale for me was the stark contrast between the military cultures that gave rise to the success of Captain Enright and the failure of Captain Abe.

One might expect that the Japanese code of bushido, designed for a warrior culture, would enhance the fighting abilities of a military. Perhaps bushido worked great in the ancient days of quick and decisive sword battles, but as this book makes so very clear, bushido fails miserably in a prolonged modern war.

One big flaw in bushido was that very time a leader failed at a major assignment, he was expected to commit suicide to atone for his shameful failure. The book presents a parable-like contrast between Abe's career and the career of Captain Enright. Enright started off as a big failure, missing an attack with a Japanese aircraft carrier because he failed to trust the consensus opinion of his crew (that the changing ocean currents which they discovered would carry the Japanese carrier they were chasing off course) and instead went with the by-the book headquarters prediction of the location of the carrier.

Sending himself to the back lines in shame, Enright, unlike the Japanese ship captains, did not commit suicide, but was instead eventually given a second chance at commanding a submarine again. The second time around, he learned to go fully with his own instincts, and also that of his crew, in the process of tracking and sinking the Shinano. One big payoff in particular was his decision to set the running depth of his torpedoes to 10 feet instead of the official 30 feet. This ended up putting the torpedoes right at the upper joint of the anti-torpedo blister carried on the underwater hull of the Shinano. This joint area turned out to be a defective weak point in the anti-torpedo shielding, and it was this defect (along with incompletely finished watertight compartments that leaked) that allowed the Shinano to be sunk with only four torpedoes.

A second big failing of bushido was that the subordinates were supposed to follow the orders of the leader unquestioningly. This works great in a military if the leader makes wise decisions all the time, but basically gets all the subordinates killed if the leader is wrong. As WWII progressed, and its initial victories faded, the Japanese military culture clearly suffered severely from an inflexible top-down decision making process that was incapable of taking advantage of information or experience accumulated by the lower ranks.

In contrast, Captain Enright learned from his early failures to trust the advice of his subordinates, which proved invaluable as they stalked the Shinano.

In the end, the sinking of the Shinano was not as dramatic of an achievement as one might think, and was due as much to Japanese military stupidiy as anything else. It was sunk basically on a short trip to another dock where it was to be fully outfitted for war. As such, the ship was unfinished and its mechanical integrity untested. Despite the enormous amount of armor, the ship's supposedly watertight compartments were not fully sealed when it set off on the trip, and so leaked horribly when the torpedoes struck - which was why it sank with only four holes in its side (in contrast, the Shinano's sister ships, the Yamato and Musashi, each took some 15-20 torpedo hits and uncounted numbers of bombs before sinking). The boilers were not all installed, and so the ship's speed was barely greater than that of the submarine initially, and dropped to below the submarine's speed when an overheating bearing forced one of the propellar shafts to be slowed down. The ship was given no aircraft to cover this trip.

The code of bushido made it impossible for any subordinates to point out the many flaws in the construction of the ship, or to question the wisdom of sending the Shinano on its maiden voyage, unfinished and unprotected, right into waters that were known to be infested with American submarines.

Captain Abe also made some horribly bad decisions - mainly in ignoring Enright's submarine rather than trying to sink it or run away from it when they first discovered the sub. I definitely got the feeling that Abe was appointed ship's captain only because he was a known quantity who diligently followed orders, and was one of the few ranking Naval captains who had managed to survive this late into the war. By this time in the war, bushido had taken the lives of many more capable captains than he.

5 out of 5 stars The Largest Warship in History to be Sunk by a Submarine.......2003-06-25

During the years before the outbreak of World War II, the Japanese navy constructed two super-battleships, the Yamato and Musashi. There was a secret third ship, the Shinano, that was to be included in this class. However, with the rise of the aircraft carrier, it was decided to convert the Shinano from a battleship to a carrier. Measuring almost 900 feet in length, Shinano was the largest aircraft carrier in the world, and she held that distinction until the United States launched the USS Enterprise in the 1960s. Cloaked in secrecy, the conversion took place. Crewmembers were threatened with imprisonment or execution if they muttered even the slightest words about the existance of Shinano. Due to the extreme secrecy of her construction, many essential tests, which would later prove to be fatal, were not conducted on Shinano. For example, the watertight integrity of the bulkheads and seals were never tested properly.

An ocean away, Captain Joseph F. Enright and his submarine Archer-fish, were leaving for the boat's fifth war patrol. Captain Enright had been haunted by the memory of failing to sink an enemy carrier earlier in the war while serving as commander of the submarine Dace. Feeling inadequate as a commander, he asked to be relieved of command. After serving at the American submarine base on Midway island as a relief crewman, he finally got his chance to command his own boat again, and he was determined to make sure that he didn't repeat his earlier mistakes this time around. Taking up his patrol station along the main Japanese island of Honshu, Archer-fish awaited action. This particular area of ocean had become known as the "hit parade", due to the large number of sinkings by American submarines. On Tuesday, November 28, 1944, Archer-fish sighted a large enemy vessel with four escorts. This proved to be Shinano. Unable to run at maximum speed due to only eight of her twelve boilers being lit, and also suffering from a problem with her propellers, Shinano was limited to a speed of approximately eighteen knots. What ensued over the next several hours could only be described as a classic game of cat and mouse. Enright and Archer-fish desperately tried to keep up with the Shinano while trying to anticipate any course changes she might make. Finally, at 0300 hours on Wednesday, November 29, 1944, the Archer-fish was ready to fire.

A spread of six torpedoes leapt from her torpedo tubes, each being fired at eight second intervals. Four explosions rocked the Japanese carrier while Archer-fish dove for the safety of the depths. The ship was mortally wounded. Her protective bladder had failed to stop the torpedoes, and, in the words of Enright, they cut through the bladder "like a sword through butter". Later that morning, the Shinano, with her bow raised high out of the water, slipped below the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Her maiden voyage had lasted all of seventeen hours.

This is a very exciting book. The format is excellent, with the chapters alternating between the action on the Archer-fish to the action on the Shinano. The first-hand account of the action by Captain Enright leaps off the pages and places the reader directly at the conning tower during the attack. Loaded with action and adventure, this book is a must for submarine readers.

4 out of 5 stars The sinking of a Japanese super carrier in 1944........2003-05-04

I disgree with some of the previous reviewers. This is a great read for adventure and it is true. It competes well with fictional Tom Clancy novels. A small U.S. submarine under an unlucky Captain sinks the largest ship in the Japanese Navy.
Shinano was the sister ship to the battleship Yamato (A Glorious Way to Die) and converted into a carrier, the size of one of our nuclear carriers today. The Japanese intended to confront the U.S. Navy with the tremendous firepower of the Shinano. Instead a lowly submarine sinks the Shinano on her maiden voyage.
Regardless of whether the submarine captain Enright or Ryan wrote the story, it is great adventure. Enright is certainly frank in his views, even about his own shortcomings. Both the Japanese and American sides are presented here and this makes it good reading. One understands the fog of battle, after reading about the pursuit of the carrier. A good quick read which is not fiction.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Book That Could Have Been Much Better.......2000-11-22

Though this book set out what it was meant to do, I was nevertheless disappointed after finishing it. Enright and Ryan do describe in good detail the stalking and sinking of Japan's secret "supercarrier." However, the writing style struck me as amateurish, filled with meaningless detail probably meant to provide a human touch but instead distracting. A tougher editor could have tightened this book up and increased the suspense.

I had the honor of receiving a copy of this book directly from Joe Enright in September of 1990 prior to his relocation to Georgia. I had always been interested in World War II aviation and had not given the submariners much thought. If you like true war drama then this is your book. I read this book with great vigor. It was almost impossible to put down. The way the book is structured adds to the drama. One chapter from the American perspective and the next from the Japanese. Tom Clancy is quoted as saying, "A brilliant snapshot of the war at sea, and the men who fought it." Find this book and give it a read!

A penetrating analysis of the hidden political, economic, and religious agendas behind the September 11 attacks and the war, with an emphasis on Afghanistan's history and the U.S.-led globalization process that has impoverished and angered much of the world.

The Terrorism Trap is a richly informed, powerfully argued, well-written analysis of the deeper causes and meaning of September 11. Michael Parenti dissects the religious, political, and economic forces behind the attacks, putting them in proper historical perspective, which includes an understanding of Afghanistan's hidden history. He answers such questions as: Why did September 11 happen? Who is to be blamed? Who is taking advantage of the crisis? Who is hurt by all the ensuing events? And why do they hate us? He sees the religious terrorism of today as related to a longstanding religious tradition of violence as well as being a reaction to a U.S.-led globalization process that has impoverished and angered much of the world. This book helps us understand what is to be done to save democracy from terrorism and reactionism.

Perhaps in the immediate aftermath of September 11, this was a book that was a shock to those who read it, but 5 1/2 years on it's all nothing new.
In fact, the book has the feel of being hurridly thrown together at times, which is perhaps why it never seems to hold a consistant argument. And while it does raise some valid points about US foreign policy that could be built upon, Parenti instead often goes of on tangents that seem more like small rants.

5 out of 5 stars the missing pieces to parts of the puzzle.......2004-04-23

For those not knowing what to beleive in this day and age, stop listening to jingoistic corporate-media blitherings and take the time to step back and read this book. Parenti unabashedly and unapologetically deals the truth clearly and concisely. Many oppose him but thats no suprise to me: "The men the American people admire most extravagantly are the most daring liars; the men they detest most violently are those who try to tell them the truth." ~ H.L. The transition is then made to the wars in Afganistan and Iraq, which follow as a natural consequence. Reasons for these wars are also given. Parenti's logic is so strict that is impossible to find a fault in it. References are provided for all the statements that are made.

I'm thankful that there are writers like Mr. Parenti who are willing to tell the truth about why the world works like it does. He's not a conspiracy theorist, as some allege. However, he logically explains that a powerful minority of the Earth's population has similar self-interests, thus creating a system that skews policies, economies, and laws in their favor.

September 11 was an opportunity for the world to wake up and change course toward a cooperative and peaceful future. Instead, the Bush administration, the oil/fossil fuels industry, and the military/weapons industry steered us toward more of the same old mistakes, arrogance, and ignorance. Mr. Parenti clues us in on who benefits from walking down the same road we've been so many times.

In the 1950s, Darryl Cole-Christensen and his family were among the first settlers of the Coto Brus, an almost impenetrable, mountainous rain forest region of southeastern Costa Rica. In this evocative book, he captures the elemental struggles and rewards of settling a new frontier--an experience forever closed to most people in Western, urbanized society. With the perspective of more than forty years' residence in the Coto Brus, Cole-Christensen ably describes both the settlers' dreams of bringing civilization and progress to the rain forest and the sweeping and irreversible changes they caused throughout the ecosystem as they cut the rain forest down. Writing neither to apologize for nor to defend their actions, he instead illuminates the personal and subjective factors that cause people to risk danger and hardship for the uncertain rewards of settling a frontier. In his own words, Cole-Christensen says, "This is a book for the scientist who wants to recapture a sense of an incalculable world departed, for the student who asks: How is it that our forebears changed and restructured this land? For the adventurer who dreams of the expanse of frontiers, for every person who, having passed once through the darkening forest along a path in twilit stillness looks back to find that a blanket of murmurs remains."

This book is a waste of the readers time and money. Christensen travels to the Costa Rican rain forest with his family to settle the "frontier". He never gives an explinatoin as to why he decided to travel to the "frontier", only excuses and apologies to his many, many mistakes. Darryl Cole-Christensen hates the rainforest, he hated it from the day he arrived and he hates it to this day. His only interest in the rainforest is monetary, money drives this man and this book. I had to buy and read this book for my college course, you have a choice.

4 out of 5 stars Evocation of the Rainforest.......2000-04-13

It is beautifully written--- the writer must also be a poet. The evocation of the forest, the air and the rain, the sweating labor of the horses and the men, the mud, all was done very well. The fine language combined with the author's humility made this an unusual book to come out of a backwoods experience. It is about farming on the frontier but it is also very much about his own growth!

A Place in the Rain Forest is not only the story of an adventure, but a journey of the spirit. I found myself listening to the sound of the rain falling in an untouched wilderness and walking with bare foot peasants as they came to settle a new land. Cole-Christensen had a tremendous insight to the character of the land, the people who live on it, and the consequences of their actions. It is a story for any one who has ever wondered what it would be like to go to a wilderness and become a settler.....
