Book Description
Hardbound. This three volume work is the first complete publication covering the mechanism of host specificity and pathogenesis in plant diseases. The approach of this publication is system based; the main aim is to compile, critically analyze and correlate the information available on all aspects (i.e. histopathology, biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology) of pathogenesis (susceptibility and resistance as facets) and host specificity in important plant-pathogen systems representing different types of parasitism and symbiotic, mutualistic and antagonistic associations. Homology among the different systems is also explored. Individual articles have been prepared by internationally reputed scientists and present an up-to-date, comprehensive and thought provoking picture of the mechanism of pathogenesis and host specificity in these different associations. The contributions broaden the viewpoint of the readers, stimulate further thinking and help with

An excellent rewiew of the state of the art in plant disease.......2000-08-23
This is a 3-volume set published by Pergamon, that gives us the results of the latest in plant pathology. The books are centered in the mechanisms of plant pathogenicity, with an special emphasis in the molecular side of the process. The series are divided in three volumes, the first for prokaryotes, in special bacteria, with two excelent chapters on the genetics of the pathogenicity. The case studies are about Erwinia spp, Xillela fastidiosa and other important bacteria. The second volume is about eukaryotes, specially fungus, treated with the same rigor that the first volume. The third book is about virus and viroids. This is an excellent book for students and advanced scientists that work with molecular plant pathology.

Book Description
From Coastal Wilderness to Fruited Plain is an account of the making of the American landscape following European settlement. It starts with "virgin" forests and grasslands of the central and northeastern United States, and successively documents the clearance and fragmentation of the region's woodlands, the harvest of the forest and its game, the plowing of prairies and the draining of wetlands. The Native American, the trapper, the farmer and the lumberman all benefited from the land and its resources; the degree to which their activities altered the soil, the climate, the natural plant and animal communities, and the water cycle is examined here.
Customer Reviews:
A singularly comprehensive ecologcial history of this region.......2006-07-14
Many have written about the region's history, some have connected its ecology to the invasion of colonists and subsequent events familiar from grade school studies of the origins and development of our nation. This book give context and meaning to both. Along the way, it roots our present conservation challenges in a firmer substrate, and contributes to our understanding of this place with a solid foundation in a philosophy of interdependence with the natural world in a time when that notion is all too uncommon. I recommend it. My only gripes: its overwrought exposition on ecological histories is a bore and it is painfilly overpriced which will limit the readership of what is otherwise an important book.

Book Description
Current standard numerical methods are of little use in solving mathematical problems involving boundary layers. In Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers, the authors construct numerical methods for solving problems involving differential equations that have non-smooth solutions with singularities related to boundary layers. They present a new numerical technique that provides precise results in the boundary layer regions for the problems discussed in the book. They show that this technique can be adapted in a natural way to a real flow problem, and that it can be used to construct benchmark solutions for comparison with solutions found using other numerical techniques. Focusing on robustness, simplicity, and wide applicability rather than on optimality, Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers provides readers with an understanding of the underlying principles and the essential components needed for the construction of numerical methods for boundary layer problems. It explains the fundamental ideas through physical insight, model problems, and computational experiments and gives details of the linear solvers used in the computations so that readers can implement the methods and reproduce the numerical results.

Robustness with Low Order of Accuracy.......2000-11-05
This book deals with numerical methods for boundary-value problems in ordinary and partial differential equations (mainly linear ones) whose solutions have boundary layers due to a small positive perturbation parameter multiplying the highest derivatives. The proposed methods are robust in the sense that they effecively resolve boundary layers and preserve uniformity in the perturbation parameter both in terms of accuracy and time/memory requirements. A novice will probably find the book more useful and interesting than a specialist, as the book represents a good introduction to the field. A specialist mathematician may be disappointed by the lack of detailed proofs for most of the more complicated PDE problems. Some of those proofs exist in the not easily accessable works of one of the co-authors (Shishkin), but still remain unknown to wider public. On the other hand, detailed proofs are given for linear ODE problems everything is known about. An engineer will certainly appreciate that the book describes all possible difficulties that may be encountered when solving these complicated problems numerically. (S)he will find the robustness of the methods attractive but will be disappointed by their low accuracy (the order of accuracy is most often less than one). It is very likely that engineers will continue using the existing higher order methods, even though the requirements of those methods may be nonuniform in the perturbation parameter.

Customer Reviews:
A first and great incite into a mystery concerning manuscrip.......1998-09-04
It was thought for many years that there was another manuscript, or that there were more pieces to this book than the slim version which became a prose masterpiece included in the canon of American Lit 1900 to 1940. Because of the editing and work by Eliot etal, and because of Barne's reclusiveness, wse didn't know much about this manuscript. Thus Cheryl Plumb's work helps us understand more about the process of this book, it's starts and stops, it's magic and mystery. A must for Djuna Barnes fans

Rediculous.......2007-08-01
As a sworn police officer I always have to wonder, at what point will America get enough of this garbage? Robert Cea, if his account is to be believed, is a criminal. The fact that he did what he did while wearing a police uniform is irrelevant as far as that's concerned. Men like him are a disgrace to all the officers who actually do their job the right way. I'm sick and tired of hearing the excuses. "My pay is low", "The Job doesn't care", "Crime was here before I came on, and it'll be here after I leave" etc. This man is, by his own admission, guilty of perjury, assault, conspiracy and a host of other crimes. He writes about routinely violating the rights of individual citizens, but that's A-Okay because they're bad people and because he includes the obligatory handfull of lines about his struggles with what kind of man he's turning into. You know what? That doesn't cut it. This book isn't about redemption. It's about Robert Cea making money by entertaining people with an account of his criminal behavior and sexual antics. While performing law enforcement duties I have been cursed, attacked with weapons and all the rest. I've never used it as an excuse to line my pockets or lie under oath. As the old saying goes "Adversity does not build character, it reveals it." Robert Cea went to Brooklyn and was faced with a daunting task. In the end his character was revealed and it was non-existant. Don't line the pockets of a corrupt cop. You can find it funny or amusing while you're reading this book in your living room but if you ever got pulled over by a police officer you wouldn't be laughing if it was a man like Robert Cea.
Fantastic........2007-05-22
What a great recounting of a career spent trying to get true bad guys off the street. It's no wonder Cea butted heads with the desk jockeys on the force.
A must-read for anyone wanting to see what now-Yuppie Brooklyn was like in its former incarnation.
Sizzling N.Y.P.D. True Story.......2006-08-15
This book relates the authors experiences in the N.Y.P.D. from his days as a rookie at the Police Academy thru his early career as a gung ho idealistic officer and then his frustrations dealing with the mopes and low lifes in the toughest parts of Brooklyn. Did he at times step over the line? Well, if so, I'm glad he did. Unfortunately, with crime friendly juries often selected in N.Y.C. sometimes such conduct may be for the greater good of society.
Cea tells it straight...with no chaser...........2006-07-19
This book is for those who don't understand why cops have to cut corners sometimes to make justice work for all of us. Reading this book, some might think his actions are way over the line. Those of you who come to this conclusion, obviously do NOT live in New York City. There are reasons New Yorkers are the way we are. This city is tough, and sometimes the only way to survive is to be just as tough.
New York City cops understand this better than anyone. I don't like the idea of cops being corrupt and breaking the law trying get justice. Looking at this concept, it doesn't make sense. But when the NYPD are out there on the raw, filthy, dangerous, crim-ridden back roads of this city, those laws don't apply very well.
I will always be on the side of truth and justice and try to apply it in my life whenever possible. However, I have also lived in this city all my life, born and raised on the streets of the Bronx during the 1970's , the worst place and the worst time in the city's history. You learn that justice is very gray, not black and white. Cops know this reality everyday. NYPD cops do the best they can with the situation and circumstances they find themselves in. I applaud cops like Robert Cea who have the guts and the courage to seek out this type of "New York" justice to try and make the streets a little safer for those of us who live here.
no lights no sirens by robert cea.......2006-07-17
i picked up this book and it killed me to put it down after hours of reading when i got the chance to pick it up again i finished it gave it to a friend of mine he finished it in one reading a must read for any new yorker

Book Description
Just as "spin" has taken over politics in America, so too has it come to define the long bull market on Wall Street. The booming trade in stocks, which has become a national obsession, has produced an insatiable demand for financial intelligence - and plenty of new, highly paid players eager to supply it. On television and the Internet, commentators and analysts are not merely reporting the news, they are making news in ways that provide huge windfalls for some investors and crushing losses for others. And they often traffic in rumor, speculation, and misinformation that hit the market at warp speed. Howard Kurtz, widely recognized as America's best media reporter, and the man who revealed the inner workings of the Clinton administration's press operation in the national bestseller Spin Cycle, here turns his skeptical eye on the business-media revolution that has transformed the American economy. He uncovers the backstage pressures at television shows like CNBC's Squawk Box and CNN's Moneyline; at old-media bastions like The Wall Street Journal and Business Week, which are racing to keep up with the twenty-four-hour news cycle; and at Internet start-ups like TheStreet.com and JagNotes, real-time operations in the very arena where fortunes are made and lost with stunning swiftness. Bombarded by all this white noise, who among the fortune tellers can investors really trust? Kurtz provides an indispensable guide with this eye-opening account of an unseen world, based on eighteen months of shadowing the most influential, colorful, and egotistical people in business and journalism. Among the people we meet in its pages are: * Ron Insana, Maria Bartiromo, David Faber, Lou Dobbs, and the other famous faces of cable TV * The manic king-of-all-media Jim Cramer, who juggles four different identities - Wall Street trader, television commentator, columnist, and Internet entrepreneur - with wildly varying degrees of success * Shoe-leather reporters Steve Lipin, Chris Byron, and Gene Marcial, whose exclusives drive up stocks or quickly deflate them * Superstar analysts Ralph Acampora, Abby Joseph Cohen, and Henry Blodget, whose predictions make the Dow and Nasdaq gyrate * Internet CEOs Kim Polese and Kevin O'Connor, who struggle to ride the media tiger while promoting their high-flying companies No one has ever reported from inside the Wall Street media machine or laid bare the bitter feuds, cozy friendships, and whispered leaks that move the market. Kutrz exposes the disturbing conflicts of interest among the brokerage analysts and fund managers whose words can boost or bash stocks - thanks to scoop-hungry journalists who rarely question whether these gurus are right or wrong. And he chronicles the journalistic hype that helped propel Net stocks into the stratosphere until they began plummeting back to earth. In a time of head-spinning volatility, The Fortune Tellers is essential reading for all of us who gamble our savings in today's overheated stock market.
Download Description
From the bestselling author of "Spin Cycle" comes a one-of-a-kind book that takes the reader inside the Wall Street media machine and lays bare the behind-the-scenes hype and human foibles that move markets and make or break fortunes.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting look inside the crazy world of Wall Street and the media.......2006-10-02
This book is an interesting narrative that looks at the end of the internet bubble and details the events leading up to the tech crash of 2000. It is told mostly through the eyes of various media figures-from CNBC anchors to their rivals at CNNfn to Jim Cramer. For someone who isn't familiar with that time in the market this book offers a great deal of insight-for people who either experienced it firsthand or already know something about it there is probably very little new here.
This book makes for an interesting read. Despite already being familiar with the events covered in this book I was entertained, especially while reading about such colorful figures as Jim Cramer and Mark Haines. The book isn't particularly well-written-the changes in tense (which I'm not sure are always done correctly) are often annoying-but is nevertheless engaging and flows well. This is not a book I would recommend for anything other than a casual read, though as such it is probably worth a look.
fast paced, no-analysis, pure narration.......2004-09-09
In a remarkably well-narrated book, Kurtz, highlights the inordinate amount of power TV business program anchors and their guests have on stock volatility. Though the book focuses on the "bubble" era, the mechanisms of stock price manipulation, intended or coincidental, are equally applicable today as it did in the Internet craze.
Despite the well narrated story lines including many of the better known financial journalists, the book does not build on the few themes introduced in the first chapter itself. After a couple of chapters, the author's take on CNBC anchors' behavior on market movement is predictable. However, the story regarding the development of CNBC, Dobb/CNNfn, Fox, bloomberg, is entertaining, though wouldnt pass as a comprehensive history guide. The focus on Kramer for most part of the book is a bit annoying as well, though the use of thestreet.com's story reveals some interesting aspects of mergers/buy-outs, etc.
In short, a fairly good read, not a great level of details, but clearly highlights (over and over) the impact of journalists on stock prices (as if you needed this book to tell you), intertwined with good story lines on TV persona and journalists.
excelent summary of the financial history of the early '00.......2004-07-29
I read this book years ago when it was a best seller. I bought it on the strength of the reviews of the people written about in this book like Kramer, the CNBC Squakbox people, numerous high profile analysts. They had a positive review of how the book came out, and so I bought and read it. I don't read the Wall Street Journal all the time so the content of this book was educating for me. Howard Kurtz has a show in CNN, he is a media critic, so his take on the financial media and players in it has a degree of credibility. However this book is dated now, there have been many developments since this book hit the bookstores. The time I read this I thought it was wonderful that a summary of the recent financial past was available in a very well written book.
Interesting but not needed for the home collection.......2002-11-24
This book offered some interesting insight into how analyst news and forecasts effect the stock market. The main message I came away with is "don't believe the hype". If you are looking to bolster your confidence in your own ability to make stock picks in the face of contridictory market analysts then take the time to listen to this book. If you're not interested in an autobiogrophy of famous Wall Street gurus then skip it. You can get the same information and much more valuable insight from reading some of the Peter Lynch books.
Too much James Cramer, not enough Wall Street.......2002-06-18
This is mostly a minibio of James Cramer with a lot of attention paid on the side to CNBC and Maria Bartiromo specifically. If you're very interested in Cramer, you can just go get his actual memoir. As for me, I am interested in Wall Street and the system of disseminating and evaluating information and opinion about stocks -- the conflicts of interest, the conventions, the legal rules, the strengths and weaknesses. I don't know how you can analyze those issues without spending time on the role and motivations of key research analysts, the position of the SEC and the communication conventions between companies and journalists, hedge fund and other money managers and the SEC. Any book claiming to treat these issues and focusing on 1998-2000 would have to deal extensively by the phenomenon represented by Mary Meeker and Harry Blodgett, which this book does not. The book focuses disproportionately and without explanation on a few TV personalities without treating the overall issue. Too bad for me.
It would have been fine if the title had been accurate -- something about James Cramer. Or even "Crazy Days at CNBC."
The data does not synthesize into any larger recommendation or theme. It comes across as an accurate chronology without analysis. The writing style is correspondingly dry.

"Black rhinos," write husband and wife eco-advocate team Carol Cunningham and Joel Berger, "are one of the most critically endangered species in Africa." Where perhaps 100,000 of the shy, lumbering creatures existed at the beginning of the 20th century, there may be only 2,500 today. Tracing the natural history of the rhino, Cunningham and Berger offer a firsthand account of the way these creatures live in the wild. They also look searchingly into the prospects for the rhinos' preservation, which is enjoying mixed success in places like Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia. To stop the slaughter, the authors write, intensive international efforts--and funding--are needed. Horn of Darkness presents a powerful argument for why such efforts should be made, and immediately.
Book Description
The black rhino is nature's tank, feared by all animals. Even lions will break off a hunt to detour around one. And yet the black rhino is on the edge of extinction, its numbers dwindling from 100,000 at the turn of the century, to less than 2,500 today. The reason is that in places like Yemen, China, Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand, the rhino's horn is more valuable than gold, so valuable that people will risk their lives to harvest it. To deter rhino poachers, African governments have spent millions--on helicopters, paramilitary operations, fences and guard dogs, even relocation to protected areas. Finally, Namibia decided to de-horn its rhino population, in a last ditch effort to stop the slaughter. In 1991, Carol Cunningham and Joel Berger, and their eighteen-month-old daughter Sonja, went to Namibia to weigh the effects of de-horning on rhinos. In Horn of Darkness, they tell the story of three years in the Namib Desert, studying Africa's last sizable population of free-roaming black rhinos. This is the closest most readers will come to experiencing life in the remaining wilds of Africa. Cunningham and Berger, writing nate chapters, capture what it is like to leave the comforts of civilization, to camp for months at a time in a land filled with deadly predators, to study an animal that is reclusive, unpredictable, and highly dangerous. The authors describe staking out water holes in the dead of the night, creeping to within twenty-seven meters of rhinos to photograph them, all the while keeping a lookout for hyenas, elephants, and lions. They recount many heart-pounding escapes--one rhino forces Carol Cunningham up a tree, an unseen lion in hot pursuit of hyenas races right past a frozen Joel Berger--and capture the adrenaline rush of inching closer to a rhino that might flee--or charge--at any moment. They also give readers a clear sense of the careful, patient work involved in studying animals, the frustration of long days without finding rhinos or seeing other people, coping with heat and thirst (the Namib desert is one of the driest on Earth), with dirt and insects, driving hundreds of kilometers in a Land Rover packed to capacity, slowing amassing records on one hundred individual rhinos over the course of several years. And perhaps most important, the authors reveal that the data they collected suggests that the de-horning project might backfire--that in the four years after de-horning began, calf survival was down (the evidence suggests that hyenas might be preying on calves and the horn less mothers couldn't defend their offspring). They also describe the dark side of scientific work, from the petty jealousy of other scientists--outside researchers were often seen as ecological imperialists--to the controversy that erupted after the authors published their findings, as furious officials of the Namibian conservation program denounced their findings and through delays and other tactics effectively withheld a permit to allow the couple to continue their study. Weaving together the historical accounts of other naturalists, a vividly detailed look at life in the wild, and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of scientific work and the dark side of the conservation movement, Horn of Darkness is destined to be a classic work on the natural world.

A Book With Eye Opening Reality.......2004-11-15
Horn of Darkness tells the story of a family of three commencing on a quest to de-horn 10 rhinos. Discovering complications and adapting to the surroundings is just one of the many challenges Joel, Carol and young Sonja have to face. For me (being an 11 year old doing a reserch project) it was perfect for references and surprisingly it had a wonferfully enjoyable story. I thought it covered what I needed to know and at the same time I experienced first hand the wonders of the rhino as well as the realities of poaching problems. Not all adults will enjoy this book as much as I but if you give it a chance and open your mind you will enjoy what it has to offer. I suggest this book for ages 11 (curious 11 year olds)-and up.
tough read at times.......2003-01-07
a good book for the wildlife enthusiast, but kinda boring at times. Not every day in real life can be as exciting as a Hollywood movie so this is accurate representation of what it must be like, but it takes a real passion for the animal kingdom to read it. It has been a couple of years since I read it so it isn't very fresh in my mind, but I did enjoy parts of it very much.
A good read for everyone!.......2000-06-18
Carol Cunningham and Joel Berger, a husband and wife research team, describe their research on black rhinos in Namibia. It is very readable, telling their personal story, documenting their research, explaining African perspectives, and discussing the politics involved with their project. This book reads like a novel while dispensing eye-opening information.
