The book is very easy to understand, is expertly written and is packed full of valuable info on this crippling illness. It gives you lots of valued information that you never hear about thus making you look at the illness in a whole new light. A violent collapse, known as a "hard landing" would be a costly disaster. Even if North Korea were somehow able to execute a soft landing and reunify with the South, huge social differences exist between the two Koreas that would make the process more costly and difficult than that experienced by other divided nations. These weapons systems were developed as single service acquisition efforts. Their high costs were justified by their sophisticated technology, which enabled the U.S. military to gain and maintain air and ground combat superiority. Such acquisition practices significantly increased the defense budget, which peaked in 1985 at $414 billion. Our goal was to systematically derive by a single method the generalizations of four well-known theories of a single material to a coated membrane laminate. Two of the theories, one geometrically linear, the other geometrically nonlinear, describe a true membrane laminate offering no resistance to bending. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This report is the sequel to Volume I of the same title, in which asymptotic methods were used to derive theories that would aid in understanding the mechanical behavior of a stress-coated membrane. In Volume II we have applied those theories to a number of boundary value problems, obtaining generalizations of well-known solutions for a membrane, plate, or shell of a single material to solutions for the same structure, but now consisting of a multilayer-coated polymer material. Perhaps the most significant accomplishment of this work was the discovery of simple prescriptions for the coating stress that would maintain the shape of an initially parabolic coated membrane after removal from the mold upon which it was cast. These solutions involve linear combinations of Kelvin functions. Coating prescriptions are given for membrane laminates both with, and without, pressure and gravitational loads. The prescriptions are presently being used in the preliminary design of a near net- shaped stress-coated membrane, to be demonstrated hopefully in the near future.

Description:
Experiments were conducted to study CCA-treated wood combustion over a range of temperature and oxygen concentrations with a view to understanding the factors affecting energy and metals recovery from waste treated timber. CCA-treated wood was burned in a furnace at temperatures from 400 to 940^oC and oxygen concentrations between 5 and 21%. The ash and condensed volatiles were digested for total concentrations of metals and subjected to leaching tests to determine the stabilized concentrations of metals. Arsenic volatilisation increased with increasing furnace temperature whereas the copper and chromium reported mainly to the ash product. The effect of oxygen concentration was weak although it appeared that more arsenic volatilises at higher oxygen concentrations. However, a larger proportion of the arsenic in the ash generated at lower oxygen concentrations is solubilised during leaching tests, with the result that the concentration of stabilized arsenic in the ash is relatively unaffected by oxygen concentration.

Clemens August Graf von Galen, Bishop of Munster from 1933 until his death in 1946, is renowned for his opposition to Nazism, most notably for his public preaching in 1941 against Hitler's euthanasia project to rid the country of sick, elderly, mentally retarded, and disabled Germans. This provocative and revisionist biographical study of von Galen views him from a different perspective: as a complex figure who moved between dissent and complicity during the Nazi regime, opposing certain elements of National Socialism while choosing to remain silent on issues concerning discrimination, deportation, and the murder of Jews.

Beth Griech-Polelle places von Galen in the context of his times, describing how the Catholic Church reacted to various Nazi policies, how the anti-Catholic legislation of the Kulturkampf shaped the repertoire of resistance tactics of northwestern German Catholics, and how theological interpretations were used to justify resistance and/or collaboration. She reveals how the bishop portrayed Jews and what that depiction meant for Jews living in Nazi Germany. Finally she investigates the creation of the image of von Galen as "Grand Churchman-Resister" and discusses the implications of this for the myth of Catholic conservative "resistance" constructed in post-1945 Germany.

Stains on a scarlet robe?.......2003-12-03

The latest generation of historians who try to represent the Germany of the thirites and forties does not understand this period. Its members totally lack the "feel" of a period only personal experience seems to be able to create. So they are bound to to overlook or underestimate at least three facts which determined what they consider the inexcusable failure of the German people, their spiritual leaders, and their political organizations to rise up against the inhumanities of the Third Reich.
1.)The misery and despair of the aftermath of W.W.I. 2.)The carefully orchestrated, sometimes clandestine, and only gradually worsening atrocities of the SA and SS. - At the very beginning even the association of German Jews endorsed Hitler, according to Toland (1976)- 3.) What may be called the double bondage of practically all ablebodied German men a)by the general Nazi laws and b) by service in obligetory Labor Camps and the Wehrmacht.
The books which might have given some insight into this situation are unknown or neglected. Griech-Polelle does not mention Else Pelke (Der Luebecker Christenprozess, 1961, 1963, 1974) or Stephan H. Pfuertner who personally experienced the effects and the aftermath of Bishop von Galen's sermons.
Her book remains another example of hindsight historiography. Vinimensor in Muenchen

Griech-Polelle rises above the common finger-pointing brand of scholarship (i.e. Goldhagen et al) that one frequently encounters in the admittedly controversial area of religion in Nazi Germany. With this nuanced and informative study one can see & understand the many forces pulling on von Galen without completely excusing his inaction in the face of the Holocaust. This book will sit comfortably next to the best literature on German life in the Third Reich (for example, Christopher Browning's Ordinary Men).

Bruccoli Great War Collection at the University of South Carolina was established in 1997 by Matthew J. and Arlyn Bruccoli and named for Professor Bruccoli's father, who was wounded in the war.
