Book Description
This practical compendium provides clinical scientists with an essential guide to the basic techniques of molecular medicine. It serves as a laboratory manual and a source of reference. It is suitable for those wishing to perform basic semi-quantitative experiments such as Northern or Southern blots and also those wishing to undertake more specialised genetic manipulations such as gene cloning, expression and creation of DNA libraries. It will give clinical scientists a unique insight into the potential of these techniques. As stated by Sir David Weatherall: â~It should be of great value to both established research workers and young scientists coming into the field for the first time. It deserves every success.â

Book Description
In May 1993, a cluster of cases of a lethal disease among healthy young people brought the attention of the world to the southwestern deserts. A previously unknown disease was killing up to 80% of the people it infected.
The reaction in the area and across the nation mixed fear, lack of information, and the struggles of doctors to save the victims of an unknown killer with hard science and the age old rhythmns of the desert. What came out was the story of a virus that had been killing since man arrived in the American continents, Hantavirus, with deadly relatives across the Americas and across the world. This book explains why and how the virus kills, and why it is still killing today. Why all of the science aimed at a virus identified back in 1993 has not brought a vaccine or a cure is part of the story, as is how that killer virus fits into the story of "new" diseases across the world.
The story of hantavirus disease, what has happened since that first outbreak, and what the real risks are is laid out by an experienced scientist and an award winning journalist living and working in the area of the 1993 outbreak.
Key Features
* Covers the full story of the recent hantavirus outbreak
* Includes interviews with survivors, and local reaction
* Presents the science in lay terms
* Places the event in the broader context of emerging diseases worldwide
* The only account which takes the reader beyond the initial outbreak in 1993-1994, bringing them up to late 1998
* Discusses hantavirus disease in the U.S., Argentina, and Canada
Customer Reviews:
this is the greatest book EVER.......2001-10-26
This book is very helpful and I have used it for both pleasure reading and in doing a report for school. This book gives detailed information, and a clear picture of what the Hanta Virus is all about.
Epidemiology on Valium.......2000-02-17
This book reviews the Hantavirus outbreak in the Four Corners region. It is written from the standpoint of a (cautious) epidemiologist. Other strains of Hantavirus are discussed. The history, vectors and environmental influences are examined. A comprehensive review of Hantavirus...
But dull. The authors writing style drags. They repeat themselves frequently, make little jokes that are too dry to carry their own weight, and use an annoying 'literary' technique of stating a premise and then adding "but that is not the way it happened". After 100 pages this wears on the reader.
Too bad! The material is unusually balanced, dispassionate and clear. A good introduction for a student considering a career in epidemiology - but hardly an enthralling night's read.
For _that_ I would recommend "Virus Hunter: Thirty Years of Battling Hot Viruses Around the World" by C. J. Peters or "The Coming Plague: Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance" by Laurie Garrett.

Read Straight Through- No Ads, No Lemons!.......2002-11-05
Readers of the New Yorker, Harpers, The Atlantic and anyone who's a sucker for those articles that hasten flight destinations and are always, no matter how long, too short at the end. This collection, by its virtuosity, range of subjects, severe to whimsical,is an automatic embrace. Don't be surprised if you catch yourself slowing down to delay the finish. But here are some specifics:
Sick of Franzen hoopla? His 'Father's Brain' transcends the muck by its own power. Caitlin Flanagan's article about the pushy parents and the spawning season at upstream universities,(Confessions of a Prep School College Counselor,) jabbed me outta nowhere- sometime in the 7th round. Who, afterall gets the grade when its all said and done? No rebouts. If that doesn't make you reach for the SSRI- the stats about the payoff for those Ivy League educations will!
Read about SALT- and decide for yourself- is it worth its own? -
There are two studies of powerful men in the media-Peter Barth-Variety Editor and Ted Turner- manic and megalo-everything. Both irkingly appealing for their hopeless flaws.
The only skip for me was the story about the last minutes of the Egyptian flight and the forces that kept the truth hidden. Not ready for that one yet. Fiction winds the whole thing up- as it should. Guess who takes it home?
This is a plum, no reason to do anything less than bite.

Fauziya Kassindja describes her upbringing in a small Western Africa village as "part modern, part traditional, and Muslim throughout." Her Muslim father did not force his daughters to wear veils and encouraged their individualism. Most importantly, Kassindja's father instilled in her a distrust and fear of female circumcision, a controversial procedure still performed in many parts of the world. Tragically for Fauziya, he would die an untimely death, but his emphatic disgust at this dangerous and life-threatening operation had a remarkable effect on his daughter. She would flee the country just hours before her own circumcision, eventually arriving in the United States, where she faced an immigration nightmare.
Fauziya recounts her harrowing ordeals in both Africa and the United States with eloquence and remarkable depth. Her initial naïveté in assuming that she would automatically gain asylum only adds to the tragedy of her story, as she instead faces isolation and religious persecution in high-security prisons. She graphically describes the horrors of strip searches and a terrible sickness that was ignored by prison staff.
This is a book of unspeakable despair put into words as well as a remarkable friendship forged between Fauziya and her lawyer (and contributing editor) Layli Miller Bashir, who was at the fore of Fauziya's case and brought national attention to the plight of these females seeking asylum. Fauziya gained her political asylum in June 1996, but the book ends on a cautionary note; the immigration process for these women is still arduous and often unsuccessful.
Book Description
For Fauziya Kassindja, an idyllic childhood in Togo, West Africa, sheltered from the tribal practices of polygamy and genital mutilation, ended with her beloved father's sudden death. Forced into an arranged marriage at age seventeen, Fauziya was told to prepare for kakia, the ritual also known as female genital mutilation. It is a ritual no woman can refuse. But Fauziya dared to try.
This is her story--told in her own words--of fleeing Africa just hours before the ritual kakia was to take place, of seeking asylum in America only to be locked up in U.S. prisons, and of meeting Layli Miller Bashir, a law student who became Fauziya's friend and advocate during her horrifying sixteen months behind bars. Layli enlisted help from Karen Musalo, an expert in refugee law and acting director of the American University International Human Rights Clinic. In addition to devoting her own considerable efforts to the case, Musalo assembled a team to fight with her on Fauziya's behalf. Ultimately, in a landmark decision in immigration history, Fauziya Kassindja was granted asylum on June 13, 1996.
Do They Hear You When You Cry is her unforgettable chronicle of triumph.

Excellent Memoir.......2007-03-28
This is the rare type of a book that transcends age, gender, and sex. To read this book is to realise the startling realities of the way America treats immigrants attempting to apply for amnesty. One of the best books I have read this year.
Poignant, Spiritual, Educational........2006-11-22
When Fauziya flees the injustices of her African country to seek asylum in America, little does she know that she is jumping from the frying pan into the fire. This book details the underbelly of a prison and a justice system that treat detainees like dirt. But amidst this squalor of human indignity there are angels. Angels appear both in and out of the prison. Some give her sustenance in prison; others work tirelessly for her release, and still others use the news media to highlight the injustices meted out to her.
What a book!
Heartbreaking but inspiring memoir........2006-09-28
Fauziya Kassindja tells the reader a heartbreaking but inspiring story of her frightful journey towards freedom. Fauziya grew up in the small African town of Togo. Her family was somewhat untraditional in the sense of following some of the major muslim customs pertaining to women. Her father did not believe that his daughters should have to wear veils or be subject to prearranged marriages to name a few. Most of all he was very opposed to the tribal custom of female genital mutilation (fgm).
After Fauziya's father passed away, she soon found herself in the custody of her aunt and uncle who set her up for a prearranged marriage which would also require her to suffer fgm.
Fauziya soon finds herself fleeing from Africa to escape this fate. She comes to the United States to seek political asylum. Her journey is shocking, heartbreaking, and inspiring. Definitely a page turner. This young lady had a lot of courage that will help many women in similar situations. A must read.
Amazing Story.......2006-05-20
This should be and could be on the bestseller list; Lord knows the girl deserves it. The issue I have is with the editor: had this been half the size, it would have been on the top five list. Instead, it languishes in parts that detract from the global horror women still experience on a daily basis. In the right hands, this would be on everyone's coffee table and progress, outrage and steps for human rights would catch on like the wildfire it needs. In all, still a fascinating story.
Excellent and a must read.......2006-01-24
I must admit I bought this book perhaps about 5-6years ago and since I buy books in bulk I actually, through a series of events, never got around to reading this one until recently. I was simply amazed. I thought it would be a struggle to read based on the what the book was about but I enjoyed the simplistic way the story was told, it was as if she was in my living room telling me this story. I liked that the author went into describing life in her homeland, gave a good insight into home life, tribal customs and the Muslim faith of her homeland...totally fascinating. As we read the author's story we realize that she was, what we would probably consider, middle class in America (wealthy in her own country)so it must have been so completely degrading for her to be treated the way she was when she finally got to the great land of America (land of Freedom they say.) The book is not going to give you an indepth understanding about FGM for the simple reason that the author does not know much about it, she can only tell you that she has known people to die from it and what she has heard what they do during the process but she, luckily, did not experience this herself. The book is about her struggle for freedom, FGM being the catalyst that propelled her to seek that freedom. She can only recount the horrors she suffered in American prisons and the hurdles she had to jump over to finally be released. Thank goodness the result was worth all the struggle otherwise she could have simply been deported back to her homeland and be left wondering "What was that all about, why did Allah make me go through all that to end up back where I ran from to still go through FGM?"
As for Layli Miller, thank God for people like her, she did not give up and because of her Fauziya has the chance to live a happy life and hopefully the "American dream."

Book Description
Between August 1813 and the end of hostilities in April 1814, Napoleon's forces were finally expelled from the Iberian Peninsula. Wellington's army invaded southern France, only halting its operations when news was received of Napoleon's abdication. The events covered in this volume include the British siege and capture of St Sebastian; the final campaigning in eastern Spain; Wellington's invasion of France; and the last actions of the war in the Battle of Toulouse and the French sortie from Bayonne. A chapter on the place of the Peninsular War in history concludes Oman's monumental work.

The Conclusion of the Peninsular War.......2005-10-04
This is the wonderfully affordable paperback version of Volume VII of Charles Oman's definitive study of the Peninsular War. In it, the Duke of Wellington, at the head of an Anglo-Portuguese-Spanish Army, crosses the French border as part of a larger Allied coalition campaign to end Napoleon's reign as Empereor of France. Wellington's campaign is paced by the on-again, off-again negotiations between Napoleon and the Coalition. A series of victories by Wellington's Army over the forces of French Marshal Soult are therefore never quite decisive. Wellington's Army, in addition, faced formidable challenges conducting an offensive inside France over difficult terrain and against a nominally hostile population. However, Wellington's task is made easier by Marshal Soult's seeming inability to manage his army in close combat, and by the slow wasting of what had once been a veteran French Army, as enthusiasm for Napoleon begins to dwindle.
Oman's mastery of his subject and of his prose is complete. The narrative flows smoothly. His retelling of the second siege of San Sebastian is remarkably vivid, capturing both the heroism and the horror of the final Allied storming of that fortress. His account of the confusing multi-day Battle of the Nive is clear and easy to follow. Oman highlights the remarkable tenacity of British and Portuguese infantry battalions that withstood a series of French counterattacks at unequal odds. Oman's narrative of the campaign across southern France is clearer than any other studies this reader is familiar with.
The primary focus of this book is the confrontation between Wellington's Army and the French Army under Marshal Soult. However, Oman does not neglect the campaign in Catalonia or the political background to the last nine months of the Peninsular War. Oman includes a nice concluding essay about the fates of the more prominent generals after the war, as well as an acknowledgement of the messy end of the conflict in Spain.
In this volume, the last of seven, Oman assumes that readers are already familiar with the history of the Peninsular War up through the fall of 1813 and the Battle of the Pyrenees. Oman does not recap the story, nor does he reintroduce personalities from earlier volumes. There is just a slight sense that Oman was pushing to finish a project that had already taken nearly thirty years.
This volume and series are highly recommended to dedicated readers of the Peninsular War and the Napoleonic era. The casual reader without background in the conflict may find this volume the wrong place to start.
The Complete Story.......2005-05-24
Sir Charles Oman's comprehensive seven volume history of the Peninsular War is the yardstick by which any other history of this theatre must be measured. It is exhaustive in detail and in breadth of coverage. If it happened, it is in one of these volumes. Napoleon may have considered Spain a side show, but as results turned out it was a bleeding ulcer. French losses here, combined with the 1812 campaign, placed a strain on the Empire which could not be overcome by even the best generalship. Any true student of the Napoleonic Wars should find these books and read them. They are essential to a complete understanding of the conflict.

Once You Go Black: Choice, Desire, and the Black American Intellectual (Sexual Cultures)
ASIN: 0816647879 |
Book Description
Private Lives, Proper Relations begins with the question of why contemporary African American literature—particularly that produced by black women—is continually concerned with issues of respectability and propriety. Candice M. Jenkins argues that this preoccupation has its origins in recurrent ideologies about African American sexuality, and that it expresses a fundamental aspect of the racial self—an often unarticulated link between the intimate and the political in black culture.
In a counterpoint to her paradigmatic reading of Nella Larsen’s Passing, Jenkins’s analysis of black women’s narratives—including Ann Petry’s The Street, Toni Morrison’s Sula and Paradise, Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, and Gayl Jones’s Eva’s Man—offers a theory of black subjectivity. Here Jenkins describes middle-class attempts to rescue the black community from accusations of sexual and domestic deviance by embracing bourgeois respectability, and asserts that behind those efforts there is the “doubled vulnerability” of the black intimate subject. Rather than reflecting a DuBoisian tension between race and nation, to Jenkins this vulnerability signifies for the African American an opposition between two poles of potential exposure: racial scrutiny and the proximity of human intimacy.
Scholars of African American culture acknowledge that intimacy and sexuality are taboo subjects among African Americans precisely because black intimate character has been pathologized. Private Lives, Proper Relations is a powerful contribution to the crucial effort to end the distortion still surrounding black intimacy in the United States.
Candice M. Jenkins is associate professor of English at Hunter College, City University of New York.

analysis of black women's narratives .......2007-09-07
Why is contemporary African American literature -- particularly that produced by black women -- continually concerned with issues of respectability and propriety? Her first book, Private Lives, Proper Relations, Candace M. Jenkins looks at how African American writers express the political consequences of intimacy for the susceptible black subject. Jenkins argues that this fascination grew from recurrent beliefs about African American sexuality, and that it expresses a basic aspect of the racial self: an often unexpressed link between the intimate and the political in black culture.
Jenkins's analysis of black women's narratives -- including Ann Petry's The Street, Toni Morrison's Sula and Paradise, Alice Walker's The Color Purple and Gayl Jones's Eva's Man -- offers a theory of black subjectivity. Here Jenkins describes how the middle-class tries to save the black community from accusations of sexual and domestic oddity by embracing traditionally "normal" values and behavior. Unfortunately behind those efforts there is the implied "doubled vulnerability" of the black intimate subject: racial scrutiny and the proximity of human intimacy.
This book was not an easy read for me. I had a very hard time getting into it. I must say, however, that the content is illuminating and definitely worth the time invested if you stick with it. For anyone interested in Women's Studies and studies of gender, sexuality and class in African American literature, particularly that of the 20th century, this book is for you. Private Lives, Proper Relations is a powerful contribution to the crucial effort to end the distortion still surrounding black intimacy in the United States.

Some good stuff, but nothing new.......2002-04-10
If you subscribe to the Mother Earth News, Countryside Magazine, or Backwoods Home -- don't bother buying this book. If you've read your magazines, you know all this stuff already.
Otherwise, it is a great compilation of material that a beginner might not know. It's a heavy read, but great if you have a pressing interest in the subject material. It's heavy on the "getting there" and lighter on the "when you've gotten there" info. I've read better books on the subject -- but I've read worse, too.
A good book for those stating the process of self sufficency.......1999-01-18
This is a very good book for pointing people twords the path of self-sufficence. It is a general guide book that will allow people to get an idea of the trials and joys to be found in the back to the land movement. It is a starter book. The topics are general, and specic information is left to more specialized manuals. But for those who are beginng to think about taking an alternative to the "rat race" this book should give a good jump start.
