    Book Description

Confucianism demonstrates a remarkable wealth of resources for rethinking human-earth relations. This second volume in the series on religions of the world and the environment includes sixteen essays that address the ecological crisis and the question of Confucianism from three perspectives: the historical describes this East Asian tradition's views of nature, social ethics, and cosmology, which may shed light on contemporary problems; a dialogical approach links Confucianism to other philosophic and religious traditions; an examination of engaged Confucianism looks at its involvement in concrete ecological issues.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for teaching and research........2001-01-22

The study of Peruvian flora have been the theme for several complex and broad studies as well as expeditions since Bentham & Hooker and Ruiz & Pavon in the eighteen century, untill McBride in 1936. Dozens of outstanding botanists have made contributions to the knowledge of this flora which is still incomplete: McBride, Weberbauer, Weddell, Ferreyra, Cuatrecasas, Smith and Gentry among others. The outcome of this is a huge amount of information and classification which is always not so easy to deal with.

The merit of this book is try to compile all the knowledge of the peruvian plants in a catalogue sorted by families, genera, location, synonimia, and holotype information (mainly herbaria availability). Actually the Brako's effort is the best one until now, to ordering all the information about peruvian flora, becoming as an excellent tool for herbarium and plant material management and as a good support for researchers not only of peruvian flora, but South American flora too.

This contribution is not only this at all. The authors Brako and Zarucchi gift us with a short overview study about peruvian flora, its distribution and composition by Alwyn Gentry, which is an excellent material for all of us who are related with teaching and education.

Surely, The Catalogue of the Flowering Plants and Gymnosperms of Peru, is not that kind of book who someone expect to read complete, but the kind who everyone interested of peruvian flora would like to have. Its objetive is not make a full description of peruvian plants, families and orders, neither give us excellent pictures and illustrations. Its objetive is make the complete checklist about what we know now. And certainly, it does.

Off the beaten path. ALl are worthy
    of three-and-a-half stars. Only dis-
agreement with them is stupid Evolu-
    tion references in them. Thousands,
    Hundreds of thousands, millions of
year, no sack! Each written by diff-
erent authors familiar to each state
profiled. Arizona came to mind first,
so I will preview with my own inter-
ests; Old Tucson is very good; espec-
ially the Western town. Peoria and
Phoenix are nice places to stay if
you know someone. Grand Canyon con-
firms God's wonders. No way to be
    an 'athiest' after seeing that!
Arizona, like all our great states
(as of this writting, I have been
to 35!) should be seen before Big
    Brother takes away out right(s)/to

For a travel book this is very well organized with all the phone numbers and major costs given. Good maps and pictures. Nice commentaries also. You almost get a sense of being there just by reading little paragraphs.

Cluster chemistry is one of the recent, exciting areas of Inorganic Chemistry. The occurence of molecular clusters, like fullerene C60, constitutes a fundamental feature midway between the chemistry of isolated chemical compounds and that of the elements. Main features of the Cluster Chemistry of both main group and transition metal elements are treated in this book. The author highlights aspects releated to the synthesis, the structure, the special bonding and the reactivity of these species. The book is written as a textbook for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students. References in tables and illustrations permit the reader to reach relevant original information. Professor Gonzalez-Moraga fills a demand for a publication appropriate for dissemination and specially for teaching this exciting subject. Book Description

Internationally known during her lifetime, Laura Battiferra (1523-89) was a gifted and prolific poet in Renaissance Florence. The author of nearly 400 sonnets remarkable for their subtlety, intricate narrative structure, and learned allusions, Battiferra, who was married to the prominent sculptor and architect Bartolomeo Ammannati, traversed an elite literary and artistic network, circulating her verse in a complex and intellectually fecund exchange with some of the most illustrious figures in Italian history. In this anthology, Victoria Kirkham gathers Battiferra's most essential writing, including newly discovered poems, which provide modern readers with a valuable social chronicle of sixteenth-century Italy and the courtly culture of the Counter-Reformation.

Only 22 when he lost his life on assignment in Somalia, photojournalist Dan Eldon left behind much more than the journals that became the basis for Chronicle's best-seller The Journey Is the Destination. He left a lifetime of adventures that continue to inspire. Raised in Kenya, he took numerous expeditions across Africa that helped him to understand and love the continent. Through his safaris and benevolent crusades--and with interludes of study and work in the US and London, and trips around the world--he crafted a philosophy of curiosity, creativity, adventure, and charity. Intensely visual, like the life it describes, Dan Eldon: The Art of Life is more than a biography. It is an exploration of one man's will to take in everything life has to offer; an example of a life lived for art, and art experienced as lif

This is a very moving and powerful book from someone who was so young. It documents a movement of change and how Dan Eldon could find beauty in the simplest of things. The imagery will stay with you long after you've put the book down.

                  5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2006-08-14

I love this book. The story of Dan Eldon is one everyone should read. It will change your perception of the world and how you live your life.

                  5 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing.......2003-07-23

I purchased both The Journey is the Destination and The Art of Life on the same day. Over the next two days, I rotated the books as I couldn't decide on which one to read first. Jennifer obviously dove deeply into Dan's life. The stories that are told from memories collected from Dan's closest friends and his family are engaging. There is no doubt that Dan left a mark on everyone he met. Even more incredible is that he continues to leave his mark on the lives of those who meet him through these books. His death may have been premature but he certainly didn't waste the short amount of time that he was given. He certainly deserves to be known as one of the twentieth centuries heroes.

                  3 out of 5 stars good.......2003-03-11

It's a shame Kathy(his mother) never wrote this book.
By far the most imtimate and well written part of this book was the last chapter that Kathy Eldon wrote.
Obviously Jennifer New loves Dan's life like we all do but unfortuneatly she never met him and that glaringly stands out in the biography. There is way too much creative license here, the fact he is raised to almost sainthood can be squeemish at times.Jennifer's writing leaves a lot to be desired, but through the clumsy writing you can't helped but be inspired by the life of Dan Eldon.
Dan is amazing!! His photos say more about him than any bunch of words can. 'The Journey is the destination" is a must have book!!
Flip through that and I guarentee your life will be changed forever!

Being already published in 1957, and again in 1962 and 1975, this book was for years one of the standard references about WW2 fighter aircraft. Since 1975 however, there has been sustantially more published about WW2 fighters than between 1945 and 1975, and though not all of those publications had new material compared to this one, quite a few did and quite a few of the new monographs about WW2 fighter planes were a lot more thorough, often discovering things in addition to this book or even sometimes contradicting it. Nevertheless it remains one of the best quick references for silhouetes and open airframe drawings, which have been used by Mr. Green over and over again in his later standard references such as the ten volume "Warplanes of the second World War" or the twelve volume "WW2 Aircraft Fact Files", both published by Macdonald and/or Jane's

                                    Book Description

"To those who would understand the reasons why Washington does not work, and to those who are seeking clues to end the gridlock for more than a brief spell, this book is a godsend." - David Broder, The Washington Post

An earlier edition of this extraordinarily prescient, elegantly written book created a sensation among Washington and media insiders when it was published more than five years ago under the title `Demosclerosis. In it, Jonathan Rauch, a former correspondent for The Economist and a columnist for National Journal, showed with startling clarity the reasons why America's political system (and, in fact, other political systems as well) was becoming increasingly ineffective. Today, as Rauch's predictions continue to manifest themselves in a national politics of "sound and fury" and little effective legislation, and in increasing voter cynicism, this book has achieved renown as the classic and essential work on why politics and government don't work.

In Government's End, Rauch has completely rewritten and updated his earlier work to reassess his theory, analyze the political stalemate of the last few years, and explain why sweeping reform efforts of the kind led by Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Newt Gingrich aren't the answers. He also looks ahead at what is likely to happen--or not happen--next, and proposes ideas for what we must do to fix the system.

For anyone who cares about the health of American democracy--and indeed of international security--Government's End is a fascinating, disturbing, and vitally important book.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2005-09-30

Read this book in an American Government class my first semester of college, and to this day it remains one of the most informative and influential books I've read.

4 out of 5 stars The endless power of the interest group.......2002-04-27

Rauch's book exposes the sad truth about interest groups and their impact on the federal government.

He makes two basic arguments. First, that each interest group is only concerned about their survival and prosperity. And second, that the federal governemnt in unable to get rid of these groups due to their expansive powers as a whole. The fed he says is unable to fight these groups because there are too many to fight at once and because so many of these groups have powerful friends on the other two rungs of the iron triangle.

The consequences of these actions is that the federal government is forced to fund outdated/ineffective organizations that do no good for the public. Also, worthwhile programs are under-funded. And lastly, the problems that have yet to be addressed have a small chance of being solved because too much of our resources are spent on these entrenched dinosaurs.

I recommend this book to anyone trying to learn about what's really going on in the federal government beneath the non-analytical levels of todays news reports. Rauch provides many examples to back up his claim but doesn't get bogged down in political/economic jargon. The only critique I have abotu the book is that he tends to repeat his sub-arguments a little too much but it may help in underscoring the main points to his claim as a whole.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Rauch Proves His Point.......2000-02-27

If you're trying to understand why the federal government is deaf to the needs of its citizens, this book will tell you why. Further, if there is any question why John McCain strikes such a chord with the American people, the answer will be found in here. Yes, the economy is doing great (and the polls say Americans agree). Yes, our position in the world is dominant (and Americans agree). But when it comes to the performance of the government, you can see the vein bulging on the average American's forehead. Washington has "stopped working," in Mr. Rauch's words and in his book, he explains why. The culprit is an explosion of special interests who seek to exploit political and finiancial gain from our nation's capital. The myth of the "national interest" has been quietly put to rest. In its place is the roar of special interests who sap the nation's economy, stifle legislation, and stir public cynicism. Mr. Rauch is a bit too cynical about the prospects for reform; I do not share his belief that government has "ended." Hopefully, the next generation of political leaders, heeding Rauch's warning, will prove him wrong.

5 out of 5 stars Cuts to the heart of the matter.......2000-01-27

It is hard to express how good a job Rauch does at putting forward his view of Wahington. He paints a vivid, believeable, coherent picture; he is fair-minded and nonjudgmental to a fault (truly - he is much too kind to many people); his pronouncements on, and advice for the future are measured and realistic, and not completely unconvincing; and on top of this the book reads very quickly. Greider's "Who Will Tell the People" is comparable in message, but, while very well done, that much larger book fails to present as clear a testament to what has happened to Washington in the last 40 years. Though people who are interested in politics should already have come to grips with Rauch's thesis, the fact is that most have not, while the average, relatively apolitical American would no doubt find this book quite an eye-opener. As the other reviewers note, Rauch is a consistently fine writer; here is a good place place to start reading.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A terrific book.......2000-01-14

I've always been a big fan of Demosclerosis and I'm also a big fan of this book, which is a heavily revised version. The revision is heavy enough that I felt I got my money's worth with this new edition. If you haven't read Demosclerosis, buy this book. If you have, you may want to buy it anyway for the new content. Rauch puts his finger on the reason why special-interest gridlock creates a polity that is considerably less than the sum of its parts. There are also some brutally effective graphics -- my favorite being the (declining) confidence in government as a near-perfect reciprocal of the (increasing) number of pages of federal statutes. Buy it, read it, send copies to your friends.

                                        Book Description

"Of course the panda is not safe. Nor will it ever be. It will always be threatened by something, attracting adversity as readily as adoration. We know what the panda needs: a forest with bamboo, a den for its young, and freedom from persecution."--George B. Schaller

Giant Pandas in the Wild: Saving an Endangered Species takes an insider's view of one of the most alluring--and until recently, one of the least understood--animals on the endangered species list. Through stunning photographs never before published in a book, readers enter a world of magical landscapes in a remote, mountainous area that is home to China's remaining 1,100 wild pandas.

Lü Zhi, who began her research in 1985, made the panda's habitat her second home, and in the process, gained the trust of more than twenty of these animals. Her observations and photographs of nearly every aspect of the panda's daily life dispel the myths about these creatures that have accumulated in the public's mind. From intimate pictures of a mother raising her infant cub to photographs of these magnificent animals throughout the seasons and over the years, the author presents the fascinating world she shared with her subjects.

Giant Pandas in the Wild offers not only an in-depth study of the animal's natural history but also a story of the dedication required to save the panda from almost certain extinction.
