Purchased this to replace the one we lost from the public library. Kids liked it and it helped them learn the reef life. Mom went a little crazy with all the repetition.

Not only does my niece love this book, I'm quite fond of the series, too! The illustrations are detailed and painstakingly accurate, but the real treasure is Dunphy's language. The motif may seem simple, but it actively tunes in a child's curiosity, making her or him eager to turn the page and see what's next.

I really enjoy Madeleine Dunphy's "Here is the Coral Reef," as I do all of her other "Here is..." books (rainforest, arctic winter, southwestern desert, and wetlands). "Here is the Coral Reef" provides parents a fun, colorful medium for teaching children about the coral reef ecosystem. The cumulative verse format is an elegant way to teach about the interconnections between all life. The illustrations are gloriously bright, with just enough action to keep the kids going, but nothing gory. The story grows incrementally with each page, tracing the unseen threads of biological systems, and culminating in a montage of its reef-dwelling characters. Kids seem to like the repetition...but any parent knows how much children enjoy repeating their favorite stories, songs or videos over and over and over! I would highly recommend this subtle yet effective book for parents and educators (*****).

An excellent anthology of Chinese drama.......2002-10-13

"Six Yuan Plays" is an anthology whose contents are translated by Liu Jung-en, who also contributes an introduction. The book brings together plays from 13th and 14th century China. The contents are as follows: "The Orphan of Chao," a revenge story by Chi Chun-hsiang; "The Soul of Ch'ien-nu Leaves her Body," a paranormal love story by Cheng Teh-hui; "The Injustice Done to Tou Ngo," a supernatural story of injustice by Kuan Han-ch'ing; "Chang Boils the Sea," a magical love story by Li Hao-ku; "Autumn in Han Palace," a political love story by Ma Chih-yuan; and the anonymous "A Stratagem of Interlocking Rings," a story of political intrigue.

Throughout this anthology, I was reminded of the popular film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," which also evokes a long-ago era of Chinese history. Many of these plays also reminded me at times of Shakespearean drama. These plays are richly populated with a diverse body of human characters: lovers, villains, emperors, warriors, court officials, and more. There are also a number of supernatural characters such as a Taoist immortal and the Divine Dragon King. Liu Jung-en's English versions of these plays are beautifully written, and contain some really poetic language.

This anthology's marvelous mix of courtly intrigue, romance, magic, folkloric elements, and tragedy is really stunning. Together, these plays constitute an enchanting body of literature. I recommend this collection both for literature classes and for individual readers.

Excellent book with wonderful personal insight into a man who captivated the world and the sport of boxing. This is a must read for any Muhammad Ali fan.

A good deal of Ali.......2007-02-10

The author has compiled a book that is exhaustive in its history on the great man. There seems to be nothing left out on him but it is so tiring to read page after page (500 plus) of glorification of Ali.

I found that even a huge fan like myself was getting bored of the countless pages devoted to Ali's religion, health and finances.

I think the book could have dropped at least 150 pages, possibly 200, and still have been a good read.

Shades of Ali worship.......2005-06-05

Thomas Hauser's definitive work on Ali uses a somewhat unconventional style in that he culls quotations from different interviews ranging from Ali's cook to Joe Frazier to paint quite a unique portrait of Ali unlike any other book.

Though much research has been done through interviews of people each of which provide a unique perspective on Ali, it could have helped if Hauser could have interviewed more of Ali's detractors to provide a more well-rounded picture of the icon. The last part of the book pulls out all the stops and proceeds to venerate Ali to the detriment of painting a multi-dimensional picture of the 20th century's greatest athlete.

An educational read but could have used a more unbiased treatment.

A Special Insight Into Muhammad.......2003-09-18

This is a wonderful and in-depth look into Muhammad Ali's life as told by those closest to him.

My only complaint is that the chapters ran a bit too long - not in content and not long as in boring or bad/useless information - not that at all. I'm a slow reader and it was simply time consuming to finish each chapter.

The chapters are told to you by Ali's friends, family, contemporaries and the man himself.

You really get a feeling for Muhammad - the person not just the boxer - through his family, friends and those that know him. I put the book down feeling closer to Muhammad Ali and feeling a warmth from him and a warmth towards those he loves and cares for...

Excellent story and very written.......2004-01-17

This is a great book, well written with nothing lost in the translation. The story grips you, even though Devigny knew in the beginning what his fate probably would be. I liked his description of the prison - you can almost smell the place. He doesn't dwell too much on the depressing aspects of the prison but rather the spirit of his comrades. He acknowledges the luck involved in his escape while leaving the reader plenty to admire with his typical French daring and panache. Devigny writes some of his experience in an ambiguous manner but it is for the best - in a situation like that, you understand, ambiguity is a fact of daily life.

While reading this story you'll find your heart beating faster and almost too loud. And you'll sympathize for those who are worthy of success but fail through no fault of their own. I read this book wanting to understand a bit more of how differently those in the underground were treated than the normal POW's and this was a masterpiece. The fact that in the final chapter Devigny wins perhaps his greatest battle leaves the reader a better person for having read the book.
