      Book Description

The Gulf of Maine supports a vital fishery for North America and is one of the most intensely studied marine ecosystems in the world. An understanding of its ecology has practical applications to management of other marine systems and fisheries. This book is the first application of Hierarchy Theory to the ecological workings of the Gulf of Maine and of marine ecosystems in general. Hierarchy Theory offers a perspective that simplifies the apparent complications and contradictions of ecosystems, which encompass a number of scales of time (from minutes to decades or longer) and of space (from centimeters to kilometers). Spencer Apollonio explores in detail the idea of natural constraints inherent in hierarchical ecosystems and the impact upon such systems when constraints are reduced or removed. He argues that conventional fisheries management, which practices the removal of these constraints, may be doomed to failure. Apollonio focuses in particular on the "groundfish crisis" in the Gulf, the precipitous decline due to overfishing in populations of cod, haddock, pollock, hakes, and various types of flounders, which have together constituted the mainstay of the Maine fishing industry for centuries. Hierarchical Perspectives on Marine Complexities presents a compelling case for a new approach that holds the promise of resource sustainability in the face of enormously complicated natural and cultural forces.

        Description:
The question of whether organization and degree of integration of ecological communities are related in a predictable manner to patterns of variability in abundance as well as to patterns of environmental variability is important for theoretical and practical reasons. However, a quantitative answer to this question is difficult as no single measure of organization and variability gained widespread acceptance. Ecological communities exhibit hierarchical structure and that structure can be interpreted as an index of integration and organization. Constituents of such communities show patterns of variability amenable to power spectrum analysis (often abbreviated as 1/f^@w, where @w is the power exponent characterizing contribution of events of different magnitudes to the overall pattern of variability). I postulated that richer, and thus more hierarchical communities, should gravitate further away from white noise (random) than simple communities. Also, I postulated that communities in more stable physical habitats will also show pattern of variability indicative of complex, multiscale organization. In this paper I analyze the data from natural microcosms to test the above hypotheses. The data span a time series of abundance data for over 70 species of invertebrates occupying 49 supratidal rock pools in Jamaica. These rock pools have many attributes of general ecological systems. The analyses led to a number of findings. First, I established that richer communities have some attributes of higher integration by finding that they are more resistant to periodic 'invasions' (return of species previously present). Second, variability of the physical environmental variables, whether at small or large scales, was within the typical range observed in other studies, with power spectrum exponents close to 1. Third, the variability of component populations differed consistently with theoretical expectations. Specifically, physically more stable pools contained communities whose power spectrum exponent was higher than those in physically variable pools. The same was true for species-rich as compared to species-poor pools. These observations mean that variability is more episodic in pool communities with higher organization and lesser external perturbation levels, with overall variability declining. Fourth, variability of biotic components was substantially different from variability of the environmental variables, suggesting that the physical environment may be a constraining but not necessarily the driving force. I further suggest that different exponents should characterize communities at different stages of development and self-organization.

                  Book Description

For scientists, no event better represents the contest between form and function as the chief organizing principle of life as the debate between Georges Cuvier and Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. This book presents the first comprehensive study of the celebrated French scientific controversy that focused the attention of naturalists in the first decades of the nineteenth century on the conflicting claims of teleology, morphology, and evolution, which ultimately contributed to the making of Darwin's theory. This history describes not only the scientific dimensions of the controversy and its impact on individuals and institutions, but also examines the meaning of the debate for culture and society in the years before Darwin.

                      Book Description

Nonlinear Waves in Elastic Media explores the theoretical results of one-dimensional nonlinear waves, including shock waves, in elastic media. It is the first book to provide an in-depth and comprehensive presentation of the nonlinear wave theory while taking anisotropy effects into account. The theory is completely worked out and draws on 15 years of research by the authors, one of whom also wrote the 1965 classic Magnetohydrodynamics. Nonlinear Waves in Elastic Media emphasizes the behavior of quasitransverse waves and analyzes arbitrary discontinuity disintegration problems, illustrating that the solution can be non-unique - a surprising result. The solution is shown to be especially interesting when anisotropy and nonlinearity effects interact, even in small-amplitude waves. In addition, the text contains an independent mathematical chapter describing general methods to study hyperbolic systems expressing the conservation laws. The theoretical results described in Nonlinear Waves in Elastic Media allow, for the first time, discovery and interpretation of many new peculiarities inherent to the general problem of discontinuous solutions and so provide a valuable resource for advanced students and researchers involved with continuum mechanics and partial differential equations.

                        Book Description

In the 1670s Henry Morgan, a pirate and outlaw of legendary viciousness, ruled the Spanish Main. He ravaged the coasts of Cuba and America, striking terror wherever he went.

Morgan was obsessive. He had two driving ambitions: one to possess the beautiful woman called La Santa Roja, the other, to conquer Panama, the "cup of gold."

"John Steinbeck's first novel, and the only historical novel he ever wrote, CUP OF GOLD is a lush, lyrical fantasy. The themes of quest and disillusion echo in all his later work." (Publisher's Source)

"Cup of Gold" is Steinbeck's first published novel. Although it is not as well-written as his more famous novels--"East of Eden" or "The Grapes of Wrath"--it is still an entertaining tale with some interesting life lessons woven into the narrative.

                        3 out of 5 stars Steinbeck's first novel.......2005-12-07

This was John Steinbeck's first novel and it explores the idea of the great man who is unconvinced of his own greatness. The story is about pirate Henry Morgan who, through perseverance, pluck, intelligence, and bravery becomes the most feared pirate in the Caribbean, eventually capturing "The Cup of Gold" - Panama. He hopes, along with this prize, to gain the love of the beautiful La Santa Roja. But she spurns him and out of bitterness Morgan ransoms her to her husband for 20,000 pieces of eight. Now he begins to doubt himself and his accomplishments and goes into a funk that even being knighted and being made the governor of Jamaica can't cure. He dies a mysterious death in his sleep.

Shakespeare wrote, "Many men have died and worms have eaten them, but not for love," but Morgan never got the message. He loses La Santa Roja and he's a goner. Unfortunately, Steinbeck hadn't developed the means yet to really capture what was going on with his characters. His writing seems unnatural and affected by the 17th century setting than anything real. The historical novel was not his forte, and he never attempted another one. This initial effort was not a good indication of what talented work lay ahead.

                        5 out of 5 stars Priceless Jewel.......2005-07-19

"Cup of Gold" is described as being the tale of Sir Henry Morgan with occasional references to history. Being unfamiliar with pirate folklore, I am not certain what aspects of the book are fact. I am certain that this book is divergent from Steinbeck's usual path of storytelling. This is a play of the morals and the values of society as Steinbeck usually discusses. However, the story is set far away from Steinbeck's familiar California backdrop.

When Henry Morgan leaves home to explore the Indies in search of riches, he leaves behind a loving family and his young love Elizabeth. After several interruptions including being sold into slavery, Henry has the opportunity to reach for success. Using money he has earned, he leases a pirate ship to begin his conquests. Using his unorthodox methods, he expands his fleet to respectability. However, one thing still alludes him, love. He tries to gain love through friendship, but longs for the love of La Santa Roja. Henry conquers the ultimate prize in Panama with the explicit goal of finding La Santa Roja. However, Henry is devastated to find that this fiery woman is beyond his control. Realizing his failure, he abandons the pirate life and attempts to return to a life of legitimacy. Even through this path and his marriage to his cousin, he finds he still lacks love. On his deathbed he realizes the love his wife has for him, but his lack of love during his life makes him feel like a failure. In death, he realizes he never really had anything.

"Cup of Gold" explores the ultimate conflict that exists between love and power. The lust for power is so insatiable that it can make one unable to be loved or to give love. While in the story it applies to a wealthy man, it is a reality for the common man as well. While using a pirate's life as a device to present this moral may seem to alienate some readers, I would suggest this book is on par with Steinbeck's other work. It is a masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars A fun and interesting first novel by Steinbeck.......2005-04-09

This was one of the last fiction books of Steinbecks i hadnt read, so i ordered it off of amazon, excited to see what his first book was like. It ended up being really good, and is one of my favorite Steinbeck books. I would probably put it fifth after Cannery Row, The Moon is Down, East of Eden, and Sweet Thursday. In Cup of Gold you can see all of the traits of Steinbecks later work, its like listening to the Beattles and seeing how all the songs remind you of songs by other bands that came after them. It has some faults of course as it is his first book, the most noticeable one stems from Steinbeck's habit of having his characters have long discussions in which they philosophize on all sorts of things. Now, later on in his career when his writing was perfected, he was able to do this while having each speaker stick to character, and talk from their own point of view. But in this, his first novel, the different speakers in the conversations get totally intermingled, and it is more of a conversation within Steinbecks head than between two seperate personae's. Its not a very big fault, and its more interesting than it really is annoying or detracting. Steinbeck thrived on the dramatic and grandiose, and for many people that is what they love about his writing, how he takes ordinary lives and shows how extraordinary they are, and in Cup of Gold he has the perfect subject with which to dramatize, so for people who love Steinbeck for his strengths and his faults, for his idiosyncrasies, Cup of Gold is really great book. It is a fun read and is especially interesting for people who have read lots of Steinbeck's other work.

A number of reviewers have given this novel single stars, and I am truly at a loss as to the reason. "Cup Of Gold" is not vintage Steinbeck. The characters are more flat and less motivated than in his classic novels, and there always seems to be an underlying question of "where is this book taking us, and why should we care?"

However, bearing all that in mind, "COG" is a fairly well-written novel about two things: how greatness arises from childish ambition, and how even the most lauded of conquerers are laden with insecurities and doubts. Despite some of the callowness of the characters (mainly Morgan), I found myself enjoying this novel, and seeing a lot of depth within...but a detached depth. In fact, I likened it to Kubrick's fine film "Barry Lyndon" which is more focused on observing a character's traits than drawing any conclusions about him. Steinbeck never tries to beat you over the head with the fact that Morgan is / was a deceitful, ambitious and insecure zealot who cares far more about his reputation and how he is perceived than any of his actual accomplishments. Instead, the reader is left to absorb all this and shake one's head with a grim smile at the commonality of truth regarding people such as Morgan.

I contend that this book is well-written, despite some obvious foibles of a first-time novelist. Certain words were used too frequently ("cried" as a synonym of "said" was annoyingly common) and it lacks the gentle flow that many of Steinbeck's novels offer, but there is certainly a depth here that forms the basis of many of his later themes. So before you judge this book by other reviews here, consider the power of a few early sentences in this novel: "Why do men like me want sons?...it must be because they hope in their poor beaten souls that these new men, who are their blood, will do the things they were not strong enough nor wise enough nor brave enough to do. It is rather like another chance with life; like a new bag of coins at a table of luck after your fortune is gone."

                                      Book Description

Florence Nightingale was for a time the most famous woman in Britain–if not the world. We know her today primarily as a saintly character, perhaps as a heroic reformer of Britain’s health-care system. The reality is more involved and far more fascinating. In an utterly beguiling narrative that reads like the best Victorian fiction, acclaimed author Gillian Gill tells the story of this richly complex woman and her extraordinary family.
Born to an adoring wealthy, cultivated father and a mother whose conventional facade concealed a surprisingly unfettered intelligence, Florence was connected by kinship or friendship to the cream of Victorian England’s intellectual aristocracy. Though moving in a world of ease and privilege, the Nightingales came from solidly middle-class stock with deep traditions of hard work, natural curiosity, and moral clarity. So it should have come as no surprise to William Edward and Fanny Nightingale when their younger daughter, Florence, showed an early passion for helping others combined with a precocious bent for power.
Far more problematic was Florence’s inexplicable refusal to marry the well-connected Richard Monckton Milnes. As Gill so brilliantly shows, this matrimonial refusal was at once an act of religious dedication and a cry for her freedom–as a woman and as a leader. Florence’s later insistence on traveling to the Crimea at the height of war to tend to wounded soldiers was all but incendiary–especially for her older sister, Parthenope, whose frustration at being in the shade of her more charismatic sibling often led to illness.
Florence succeeded beyond her wildest dreams. But at the height of her celebrity, at the age of thirty-seven, she retired to her bedroom and remained there for most of the rest of her life, allowing visitors only by appointment.
Combining biography, politics, social history, and consummate storytelling, Nightingales is a dazzling portrait of an amazing woman, her difficult but loving family, and the high Victorian era they so perfectly epitomized. Beautifully written, witty, and irresistible, Nightingales is truly a tour de force.

I was looking forward to reading this because of the good reviews I had read about it, but frankly, I couldn't get past about page 50. I will perhaps try to get into it again, but the narrative did not hold my interest and was rather dry & academic in my opinion.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful biography.......2006-01-06

What I love about Gillian Gill's biographies is the obvious extensive research of her subject. I had finished reading Gill's second biography on Mary Baker Eddy and was so impressed I knew in the Florence Nightingale biography I would find a well-researched and well-written history of a very complex woman. Gill's subjects are not always easy to understand, but through Gill's research you gain at least a clearer idea of the woman behind the "Lady with the Lamp". A wonderful biography worth reading. I especially enjoyed learning more about Nightingale's family and how important they were in creating Florence Nightingale.

                                      3 out of 5 stars I was disappointed.......2005-06-17

I found this read a bit on the dry side and at times almost pedantic. I am glad I read it, but it didn't really keep my attention as I had hoped.

5 out of 5 stars Nightingales:The extraordinary Upbringing and Life of Miss F.......2005-01-07

Florence Nightingale's life holds a fascination for me. This is an extremely detailed read and Miss Gill's vocabulary is so extensive that one may desire a dictionary by one's side at times. The lifestyles of the families of privilege during the Victorian era painted a new portrait of a true hero, and opened windows to how those times still effect us today! The descriptions of hospital life during the Crimean War were eye-opening, as were the the illnesses in the Nightingale family were thought provoking from a medical and psycological standpoint. As a nurse myself, I am sorry I have not adequately appreciated "Flo"! Not easy reading, but worth the effort.

                                            Book Description

"The writing style is mature and experienced. There is noticeable care in the presentation of materials and appropriate sensitivity to the intended audience. . . . The book categorizes large bodies of wisdom in the conduct of survey research over the past half century and provides ''rules-of-thumb'' guidance to the production, analysis, and consumption of survey data."

                                            --Steve Seitz, University of Illinois

"The authors have provided a well-written update of their textbook, which will be useful as a textbook or supplement in upper-division undergraduate or introductory graduate courses on survey research, statistical data analysis, or research design. The book provides readers with the knowledge that enables them to evaluate the results of survey research. It sensitizes the readers to potential problems that arise from flaws in research design, sampling, questionnaire construction, data collection, coding, data analysis techniques, and improper presentation or interpretation of findings."

                                            --Mike Margolis, University of Cincinnati

Why should we believe the results of surveys based on relatively few interviews? What are the appropriate cautions in interpreting survey reports? Aimed at answering these questions, An Introduction to Survey Research, Polling, and Data Analysis, Third Edition describes how surveys are conducted in such a way that they can be believed, explains how to read statistical reports and analyze data, and provides guidelines that are useful in evaluating polls. Using frequent examples from contemporary, large national surveys and polls as well as from the media, the authors stress understanding tables thoroughly before moving to interval statistics. In addition, they cover survey design, sampling and question-writing steps, interviewing and coding strategies, and survey analysis from frequency distributions and cross-tabulations to control tables and correlation/regression. They also cover the ethics of survey research and how to read and write survey research reports. Readers of this book will learn to distinguish good from bad polls and to better design and conduct their own surveys and polls.

Surveys are everywhere and poll results are a dime a dozen nowadays. Everyone has their poll statistics to share with you--on the news, in the paper, in magazines, oh, and of course, on the Internet. Have you ever wondered how they get those stratified samples, or how they get the +/- 4% error on those polls you read over coffee in the morning? This book gives you all the basics that you'll ever want to know if you want to interpret polls, polling data, survey data--or just plain understand all the political and behavioral conclusions that are drawn from surveys. If you're in college or grad school, or if you make your living by analyzing market research or survey data, this book is definitely worth the investment. If you actually want to conduct surveys of your own, it's a must-read! But, remember, it's pretty basic. It might not teach you all the statistical pixie dust that you'll need to analyze your data, but it will get you off to the proper start in setting up your research designs. Warning: methodology books can be mind-numbing. That's why I gave it only 4 stars. It's not nearly as mind-numbing as most in its genre, but, hey, it's a methodology book, so it's not exactly a dance on the rooftop.

5 out of 5 stars What will become of us?.......2003-10-05

What will become of humanity and its successors this century, over the current millennium and in the distant future (say 100,000 years or so)? Are we headed for extinction or is 'quality survival' possible or even likely? Are the prospects for quality survival something that we can influence and, if so, what are the priority issues on which to maintain a continuing focus in order to optimize our prospects?

Doug Cocks engages with these questions with obvious enthusiasm. His exploration is immensely wide-ranging and he brings together an extraordinary range of fact, theory and speculation in a way that is scholarly while remaining colloquial, and which carries the reader on a truly fascinating journey through - to quote one of the author's allegories - a series of dungeons in which Posterity finds herself having to slay a series of dragons, maturing and growing stronger as she succeeds in overcoming each more formidable dragon. Cocks' conclusions, at least about the possibility of long term quality survival, are modestly optimistic.

He uses a methodology that contains elements of scenario building and preferred futuring to explore these questions, basing his enquiry around four priority issues. The issues are:
                                            * Nursing the world through endless change
                                            * Raising the quality of social learning
                                            * Confronting near-future threats and challenges
                                            * Anticipating deep-future challenges.

These issues are selected as representative of the need to respond "collectively and selectively to an ever-changing set of priority issues, meaning those judged at the time to have a particular bearing on whether the lineage can achieve quality survival."

Both the content and the methodology will be of interest to anyone concerned with forward planning, as well as to the general reader.

Anyone interested in the long- and shorter- term future of humanity will find this book a fascinating and extraordinarily rich source of material and ideas. It is a tour de force to have been able to assemble and make sense of so much information while maintaining a simple, undogmatic and eminently readable narrative. If you want material on which to base conversation, speculation or analysis about our future, look no further!
