3 out of 5 stars If moving, You NEED this book!.......2005-06-22

Regardless of what you read below (from southerners), even the larger cities such as Atlanta are very Southern in overall character (e.g., few mixed race relationships as compared to major non-Southern cities, etc.). I am now in my third year there. Some people talk about the "New South," etc. Forget it,....unless Miami counts! I'm a WASP and still feel like I've abandoned the 21st-century by living in Atlanta. To some of you, it will literally feel like a third-world country. (You'll DEFINITELY need cultural preparation if coming from the West Coast or Northeast). But, don't take my word for it. The culture shock series prints this volume separately since the American South needs special attention above and beyond the U.S.A. volume. And remember, the South includes Texas and Oklahoma. So, do yourself a real favor and get this book as well as related publications.

4 out of 5 stars The perfect gift for the carpetbagger in your life........2004-10-01

I've lived in the grographic South for my entire life; however, because the city I live in is Atlanta, there is a degree of homogenization in the ATL thanks in large part to the number of people who've moved here from other cities that it really has lost its identity as a Southern city.

When a friend of mine from New York (Lon Gisland, actually) asked me what being raised in the South was like, I found that I really couldn't tell him based on my own experience. Then one day I found this book. I read it out of interest in what I had been missing. It's true, this book more accurately depicts life in more traditional Southern cities or towns...in Georgia that would be larger sities like Augusta or Savannah...as opposed to truly international cities like Atlanta or Charlotte. But it still serves as a terrific primer on both the heritage and the core values that still resonate with most of us today. I bought the book for my Lon Gislander friend and the first thing he said the day after he finished it was "'Mornin', y'all!"

See? There IS hope. Great book, anecdotal and referential, and written with a healthy sense of humor (terrific example, paraphrasing: "The reason so much of the food in the South is fried is because Southerners know it tastes better that way"). If you're curious about the region, about stereotypes, about realities, about the nature of a warm and beautiful group of peaople, this is the book that will answer a great deal of questions while providing some entertaining reading as well.

5 out of 5 stars Nails Southern culture wonderfully!.......2003-08-02

I'm a born and raised Southerner who married a man from Boston and has moved all over the country with him. I never realized the little quirks that helped make me "Southern" untill then, and this book is dead on in pointing them out. Little things such as children wearing smocked dresses for play, and dressing up to run errands, up to the biggies such as the importance of manners, and the role of religion in our society.

Sure not everything may apply to the Southerner you know, because I'll admit the book deals primarily with the upper-middle class South of genteelness. But like it or not, it's the South I live in and that has molded me. If only I could convince all my Boston in-laws and California friends to read this book! Then we could all dress up and go watch the game together, stay out late at our alumni frat party, eat an early grits breakfast, go to Sunday worship and then write thank you notes to everyone!

1 out of 5 stars Extremely outdated information.......2002-09-20

Very misleading. The information provided is from a South that existed 50+ years ago. Some of the material was silly. Don't waste your time/money.

3 out of 5 stars nice effort, but missed a lot of chances to be informative.......2000-09-29

The _Culture Shock_ series of books are some of my favourites. While this one has a fair amount to like, and some pleasant surprises, there's also a lot it misses out on, which is kind of too bad.

Winter does correctly communicate what I believe to be the single most important thing anyone can take South with them: the knowledge that the South is a very diverse region, generally misunderstood and accustomed to being misunderstood, and is more complex and changing than is typically realized outside the Southern states. Winter makes clear that if you go without a bunch of assumptions, and give people a fair shake while having the courtesy to let them be themselves, you'll maximize your odds of a good experience. Those are good procedures anywhere you go.

The markdown is for two reasons. First of all, the quiz at the end of the book really takes the cake for silliness; it insults the reader's intelligence and adds no value. It's the worst I've seen so far in six _Culture Shock_ books. The other weak spot is the coverage of regional cultural and accent differences. The mountain South and Texas are given fairly short shrift; the focus seems mostly on the Deep South and Piedmont. We are told that there are half a dozen distinct Southern accents, for example: great, how about teaching us learn to tell them apart? We get a big section on the role of Christianity in Southern life; ok, fine--but what does that mean for the non-Christian...is the popular image perhaps a media exaggeration with little relation to reality, and does it vary by region? We hear about Atlanta's cosmopolitanism, great; my impression of Austin is that it does pretty well also, but I don't think it's even mentioned in the book. And so on.

Recommended because even though it falls short of what it could have been, it's still a good book for the visitor or new arrival to the South, or for someone marrying into a Southern family.

I thought I was getting the actual book NOT the studyguide. I was completely disapointed in the lack of explanation as to what I was ordering before i ordered it. I want to return the study guide since it is of NO use to me, not even in conjunction with the book, but I lost the reciept so I guess I am stuck with it.

4 out of 5 stars Great intro book!.......2004-08-19

This book is for those wanting an easy reading introduction. Its very informative, well put together and easy to follow with adequate graphics. (I hated the questions at the end of each chapter though, ok lets face it they were easy you just had to really think about them).
I wouldn't recommend for a biology buff but definitely all others!

2 out of 5 stars HARD TO FOLLOW.......2004-07-27

I just finished my biology class with this text book. Over all I was very disappointed in this book. I read each chapter that was assigned to us by the professor and worked my study guides but still came out of the each chapter more confused. With the jargon they put in this text book it doesn't do the student any favors in the layouts you will need to spend time to investigate some of the information on your own to obtain a better understanding of BIOLOGY.

5 out of 5 stars An easy-to-read book that still avoids over-simplification.......1999-03-26

Although Life on Earth is meant to be a textbook, I find it to be an excellent reference book. The design does not force the reader to begin at the first chapter and read sequentially. Terms are explained in clear english, and the glossary is very thorough. Illustrations are well-drawn and fitting, and the layout is easy on the eyes. Also, the chapter summary after each section is invaulable to students. I cannot recommend this book more to anyone who is interested in Biology or needs a reference book about the workings of life on Earth.

4 out of 5 stars easy to understand.......1998-07-10

This book was easy to follow. Unlike a a lot of other books, it does not throw a bunch of terms you dont understand at you.

                                            Book Description

Set against the majestic yet unforgiving Himalayan landscape of World War II Tibet-an unknown and tightly sealed land deeply suspicious of foreigners--LOST IN TIBET recounts the taut adventure of five American airmen facing the greatest challenge of their young lives. Hundreds of miles off course and running low on fuel, the airmen bail out of their foundering plane over what they thought was India. Instead, they parachute into the high Himalayan ridges of a Tibet riven with political intrigue and pressed tightly between Westerners involved in a war they didn't understand and Chinese who threatened their very existence. Surviving the parachute drop from the plane was only the airmen's first challenge, and perhaps their easiest. Impeccably researched and well paced, LOST IN TIBET tells the previously untold story of the group's struggle to escape back to the relative safety of their base in India.

For those hauling cargo over the Hump, the enemy was not the Japanese but rather what is probably the harshest weather and terrain on the earth.

On their ill fated flight the crew is lost and hundreds of miles off course when they finally are down to their last drops of fuel and bail out over an unknown land. Much to their surprise they ended up in a remote part of Tibet.

Most of the book is their story of their long journey to safety. The book also offers an early insight into the China-Tibet political struggles that continue today.

Very well written and an easy read for a rainy day.

I enjoyed this book because I was a pilot flying the "Hump" at the same time these men were. Their story is exciting, well written and spell binding and will interest those who enjoy adventure. Almost a thousand aircraft were lost on the "aluminum trail" between India and China. A lot was learned in that operation at the expense of the lives of the young inexperienced airmen who took part. Lost In Tibet gives one an insight of the flying conditions we experienced and also the complicated wartime politics in the Tibetan area of that time. It's a good "read".

I stopped reading a few pages into the first chapter. I couldn't quit thinking about the ridiculous false statements in the 2nd paragraph of the 1st chapter. First it says "the pilot decided to crash," after the engines catch fire, but he doesn't actually crash. Then it says the cause of the fire was because the spark plug gap was too wide which "let raw fuel run straight through the engines and out the turbines and there it had ignited."

The part about crashing is sensationalism. The part about the sparkplugs is completely wrong since they have nothing to do with the flow of fuel. I'm sure the topic of this story is true but with that many errors on the first page of the first chapter I'm going to find another book on this topic I can trust.

4 out of 5 stars Five airmen lost in Tibet........2006-12-07

Not a typical story about World War II. Five airmen parachute from their crippled supply airplane and end up lost in Tibet. At that time, Tibet was somewhat independent from China. The airmen's landing in Tibet causes a huge political firestorm between Great Britain, Tibet, and China. The airmen are in the middle of this. The result is a diplomatic balancing act as the airmen leave Tibet.

This is a nice little story about World War II. The authors write a readable entertaining book about the story of the men and the magic land of Tibet. This is a very enjoyable read.

"All Politics Is Local" by Tip O' Neill, with Gary Hymel
Published by Bob Adams Inc. Holbrook, Ma 1994.

This small book has not been given enough respect by my fellow Amazon reviewers. Tip O'Neill, (D, Massachusetts) has compiled a concise compendium of anecdotes dealing with his sixty years experience in politics. The very definition of anecdote requires a short and condensed story making a point. Tip O'Neil, former Speaker of the House, has done just that: provided many miniature stories that succinctly illustrate a point.

As Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tip O'Neill received more popular votes than anybody except the President and the Vice President. The President is elected by popular votes by way of the Electoral College while the House Speaker is elected by popular votes by way of the House of Representatives. This, alone, should be reason enough to study this book on politics.

I was given this book by my son for Father's Day, 1997, and ever since then I have been "sensitive" to the term, "All Politics Is Local". I suggest to my fellow reviewers that they count how many times generals and TV commentators use the term, "All Politics Is Local" when they are describing the nation building efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Further, this book should be read again and again by the 535 members of Congress. Example: On page 162, Mr. O'Neill tells about Fr. Robert Drinan, S. J., being concerned about wearing his Roman collar on the floor of the House. Tip O' Neill recommended to the priest-congressman that he just be himself and walk around with his collar. Don't you think that the current Speaker of the House, R. Dennis Hastert, (R. Illinois) would have profited from reading that anecdote? If he had read this book, Speaker Hastert would have been prepared for the recent election of a Catholic priest as Chaplain of the House, and Hastert would not have been embarrassed by worrying about a person in a Roman collar walking around on the floor of the House. It had already been done! Too bad Speaker Hastert had not given this book more respect.

Whether knocking on doors or meeting folks at the county fair, the best way to persuade people is the personal way. In this short but sweet book, former Speaker of the House Tip O'Neil shares a lifetime of stories to illustrate this important lesson. Even if you aren't an avid reader, you'll find it difficult to put this book down.

The other reviews for this book amaze me... it seems that the other reviewers like their authors to relate common sense principles with a common thred of self-serving arrogance.

Tip said nothing in this book that everyone doesn't already know. And his constant references to himself in 3rd person get annoying by the 10th page. Who actually refers to themself as "a great man"???

                                                  Tip does.

                                                    Book Description

In The Landscape of Reform Ben Minteer offers a fresh and provocative reading of the intellectual foundations of American environmentalism, focusing on the work and legacy of four important conservation and planning thinkers in the first half of the twentieth century: Liberty Hyde Bailey, a forgotten figure in the Progressive conservation movement; urban and regional planning theorist Lewis Mumford; Benton MacKaye, the forester and conservationist who proposed the Appalachian Trail in the 1920s; and Aldo Leopold, author of the environmentalist classic A Sand County Almanac. Minteer argues that these writers blazed a significant "third way" in environmental ethics and practice, a more pragmatic approach that offers a counterpoint to the anthropocentrism-versus-ecocentrism--use-versus-preservation--narrative that has long dominated discussions of the development of American environmental thought.

Minteer shows that the environmentalism of Bailey, Mumford, MacKaye, and Leopold was also part of a larger moral and political program, one that included efforts to revitalize democratic citizenship, conserve regional culture and community identity, and reclaim a broader understanding of the public interest that went beyond economics and materialism. Their environmental thought was an attempt to critique and at the same time reform American society and political culture. Minteer explores the work of these four environmental reformers and considers two present-day manifestations of an environmental third way: Natural Systems Agriculture, an alternative to chemical and energy-intensive industrial agriculture; and New Urbanism, an attempt to combat the negative effects of suburban sprawl. By rediscovering the pragmatic roots of American environmentalism, writes Minteer, we can help bring about a new, civic-minded environmentalism today.

The arguments put forth by Dr. Minteer show a base of solid research and thought, advancing the ongoing national debate regarding not only who we ARE in our role as an environmental steward, but who we WERE - a necessary device for self-discovery, if we, as a nation, hope to move forward from debate into pragmatic, applied modifications to our domestic environmental policy. My only concern is an odd one re: the light typeface in this printing, which makes the actual reading process difficult, especially in low-light conditions (as I do most of my reading while under a bridge).
