Book Description

Limnoecology: The Ecology of Lakes and Streams is an accessible text which places limnology, the science of investigating the structure and function of inland waters, in the context of modern ecology. It presents several new developments in ecology and emphasizes evolutionary ecology. Unlike most ecology textbooks, which use examples taken almost exclusively from terrestrial systems, this book focuses on the relationship between limnology and ecology by presenting empirical data drawn entirely from limnology in order to advance more general ecological theories. All the experimental and observational examples are drawn from the same set of organisms of inland waters and their ecosystems. This unique text covers all the key issues of limnology, while its structure and underlying concepts conform to ecology, making it equally useful in both fields. The authors begin with chapters on the link between ecology and evolution and on the methodology of ecological research, then continue on with an introduction to the physical and chemical properties of freshwater habitats. Subsequent chapters follow the classical hierarchical sequence of ecology from simpler to more complex levels of organization: individuals - populations - interactions between populations - communities - ecosystems. Featuring recent research results and examples from a variety of international sources, Limnoecology serves as an ideal undergraduate text for courses in limnology, ecology, and aquatic biology.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars great book on Limnoecology.......2000-05-04

The best thing I found about this book was the explanation of basic concepts of aquatic parameters and behaviors. After reading this book I found myself having hold on the topic and many other related topics. I would highly recommend this book to Environmental Engineering/Science students and specially whose focus of research is limnoecology. One interesting thing, that this is the only book with the title "Limnoecology". I congratulate lampert and Sommer for their great work.

A treat for those who just plain love to read, Magical and Mystical Sites was coedited by Elizabeth Pepper and John Wilcock. (Wilcock is a travel writer whose valise is covered with stickers from all over the world, including Venezuela, Japan, Greece, Vancouver, and occult guides to Britain and South America.) Also coeditors of the Witches' Almanac, Wilcock and Pepper turn their witty and seasoned eyes to the ancient world. Starting in Turkey, they explore the ruined city of Ephesus near present-day Smyrna to uncover every tad of information they can about the goddess Diana whose temple stood there for hundreds of years. The reader is shown what it was like then and what it is like now, plus loads of tidbits for those intending to visit. The journey wends its way to 28 spots between Turkey and Ireland, including some in Greece, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The chapter on Samos--containing a biographical sketch of its native son Pythagorus--is alone worth the fare. --P. Randall Cohan

                            Book Description

This is the new edition of a textbook dealing with the nature, origins, development, and causes of human variety, and with the biological organization of past and present human populations. The familiar structure of the previous editions has been slightly modified, and the book is divided into four sections. These cover some of the general principles of evolutionary theory; the history of Primates; the fossil evidence for human evolution; aspects of Primate behaviour; the principles of genetics as applied to population studies; systematic descriptions of human variation; the nature of human growth and factors which determine it; varieties of human physique and other constitutional traits; and the ecology of human populations, considered especially in terms of adaptation processes. Two new authors, Professor D. Pilbeam and Professor P.T. Baker, both in the United States, have contributed the parts on human evolution and human adaptability respectively to this substantially revised and rewritten edition.

A wonderful collection of some of Noel Coward's brilliant production.
                                              Coward is unparalelled in english litterature with his short stories;
and here we have two gems ("Cheap Excursion" and "The Kindness Of Mrs.
Radcliffe" excellently presented by SIMON JONES.
Together with MARGARET LEIGHTON we also hear NOEL COWARD himself act out some excerpts from his plays "Brief Encounter", "Blithe Spirit" and
"Present Laughter" plus G.B.Shaw's "The Apple Cart"
This 5 -cd-collection also presents some of Coward's collected verse. Enjoy!

                                                Book Description

It is one of the great mysteries of life that in atmospheres of the harshest cruelty, a certain few not only survive but emerge as beacons of light and life. Father Arseny, former scholar of church art, became Prisoner No. 18736 in the brutal "special sector" of the Soviet prison camp system. In the darkness of systematic degradation of body and soul, he shone with the light of Christ's peace and compassion. His sights set on God and his life grounded in the Church, Father Arseny lived by injunction to "bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2).

This narrative, compiled from accounts of Father Arseny's spiritual children and others whom he brought to God, gives stirring glimpses of his life in prison camp and after his release. It also tells the stories of people whose lives, often during times of almost unimaginable crisis, were touched and transfigured through their connection with Father Arseny.

Emerging from the context of the particular tragedies of Soviet Russia, this book carries a universal impact certain to be felt by readers in the West today.

                                                Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Something is important is missing.......2007-09-30

I have mixed feelings about this book. At several different points the stories about Father Arseny brought me to tears. It is clear that God used him to bring humanity, goodness, and hope into the life of the Soviet Gulags. He was a beacon of light that the powers of darkness could not extinguish, by God's grace. Father Arseny changed the people who encountered him, and after reading his story I hope and pray to be more like him.

On the other hand, Christ and the truths of the Christian faith are missing from these stories. When Paul wrote to the Corinthians he said: "I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified" (1 Cor 2:2). Christ was the sum total of Paul's message. If you take Christ out of Paul's writings, or out of the N.T. there is absolutely nothing left. It is all about Jesus, about his life, his death, his resurection, and the salvation that was wrought on the cross for our sakes. Christ is the all and all of Christian faith and life. Consequently, if you go to the simplest Pentecostal or Baptist church, and attend a time of testimony, or listen to a sermon there, you will probably hear about Christ, the cross, salvation, and living for God.

But in reading these recollections of Father Arseny we find very little mention of Christ at all, let alone the great truths of Christianity. At best we get a sense that Father Arseny was a deeply moral person, who loved those around him, and worshiped (venerated?) Mary, the Mother of God. But Christ himself is absent. The Cross is absent. The gospel, in effect, is absent. Someone unfamiliar with Christianity will not learn few, if any, theological Christian truths from this book. Even at those moments in the book where the gospel would have been most crucial... when someone on their death bed is struggling with their sin and struggling to believe in God... Father Arseny never responds by explaining the gospel or even mentioning Christ. At least no one recollects him as having done so. Compare this approach, for instance, with similar instances in Lutheran bishop Bo Giertz' classic "The Hammer of God."

In sum, there is very little that is specifically Christian about this work, in the sense that it does not proclaim or explain the gospel, or any truths of the Christian faith. There are important moral lessons to be learned, of course, but that is not enough. No doubt, many people will be upset at that claim, but I do not see how it can be refuted. Similar biographies of St. Seraphim of Sarov, and St. John of Kronstadt are unmistakably Christian through and through. But with Father Arseny's book, I could not help but think something important was missing.

                                                5 out of 5 stars Life-Changing Experience.......2006-05-09

A life so filled with the Love of the Lord Jesus Christ spreads the Glory of God wherever that life is told. The living word of God written in the heart of Father Arseny shows us Christ within this humble Orthodox priest. I cannot read more than three pages or so without weeping, both in joy and in profound sorrow that I fall far short of such a Christian. This is not only a book, but a treasure of how to live the Orthodox Christian Faith which has so much to tell us about the Gospel of Christ and how to cooperate with His Holy Spirit in our hearts and consciences. Note: a friend visited a Russian home, and the grandma warned him of thieves in the neighborhood. She made the sign of the Cross over him with prayer. That evening he was indeed accosted by someone who stood, ready to attack, and then ran away into the darkness ..he knows that the Lord protected him - again by the simple faith of Christ's people. Please do not keep this book to yourself, but pass it along to as many as have the heart to receive it. It is a powerful, life-changing testimony.

Most Christians, Protestant, Catholic, or Orthodox, think of the great saints as people who lived many centuries ago. But every generation has its saints, its shining lights of God's glory, and Fr. Arseny was one of the 20th century saints. Every person has the potential to become a beacon of God's glory. Fr. Arseny showed how one can become transformed, or divinized, even in the most wretched circumstances. Must reading for all people of faith or doubt.

5 out of 5 stars My Audio Book was *ABRIDGED*.......2005-11-05

I first encountered the book in the audio format. It was excellent! The only drawback, as I experienced it, was the accent of Vera Bouteneff (who reads half the chapters). Her Russian accent sometimes made it a just a bit difficult to understand a word or two, but never sacrificing my overall understanding of so much as a paragraph.
A year after first listening to the audio book, I was given a copy of the paperback, and lo and behold: the print book is about 50% longer than the audio version! And the audio book packaging says nothing about being a shortened version.
Overall, both versions are excellent. Just be warned -- unless the audio book is being released in a new version -- the audio book is missing about the last third of the book. It is *not* unabridged as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars Even with problems, it's perfect..........2005-02-28

I am wary of those who write about a book that it "changed their lives" or that "it is a book every person should have to read." In most cases, these are heavy exaggerations and over-dramatic praises. However, I must admit that this book falls into both of these categories. "Father Arseny" is not a perfect book; the translation (from Russian) is imperfect and the chapters are mostly very scattered, not having anything to do with one another. I was hoping for a chronological biography; instead I got many stories broken into 3 sections, the last with some stories which don't even make note of Father Arseny except when mentioning the fact that the people in the story later met Father Arseny or were his spiritual children. However, the impact some of the chapters have - both of the priest and of his spiritual children - is so deep, one does not want the book to end.

The first part of the book describes Father Arseny's time in a Soviet gulag and the many miracles which were performed through him. One of these stories in particular - that of Fr. Arseny and the prisoner Alexei in a cell for three days in -22 degree weather - is so miraculous, it alone makes the book worth picking up. Another - that of the woman being saved by the Mother of God from being raped - also has a profound affect on the reader. These are just two of the many stories which I will never forget, and which I will return to to read again many times in my life.

Mainly, this book taught me two things: First, I find that I see faith in everyone now. The Light of faith exists in all people, even if only a spark. The other main thing this book gave me was a much deeper and poignant respect, love, and trust in the Theotokos; some of the stories are as much or more about her than they are about Father Arseny.

Orthodox or not, I would recommend this book to anyone. Without a doubt, it will make that aforementioned spark of faith grow, and keep it burning for years to come.

(be sure to pick up the second Father Arseny book as well, "Father Arseny: A Cloud of Witnesses")

The Bermuda Hundred campaign -- a May 1864 attempt to seize Richmond by 33,000 Federal troops under Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler -- has always tended to be caricatured by the Civil War historians who cover it. The usual narrative is that Butler had a great chance to grab the Confederate capital, blew it through world-class incompetence, and wound up retreating into the neck of the Bermuda Hundred peninsula between the James and Appomattox Rivers, where supposedly it was as neutralized as if it had been "in a bottle strongly corked."

Robertson could have followed the old bash-Butler interpretation, but instead set aside the conventional story and looked at the campaign with the eye of a superb operational-level military historian. (He's on the permanent faculty of the Combat Studies Institute at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.) While avoiding the opposite error of turning Butler into some kind of misunderstood genius shafted by his superiors and subordinates, Robertson patiently delineates the flaws in U.S. Grant's instructions to Butler, the frictions created by an awkward command relationship with Butler's two corps commanders -- neither of whom he'd met, much less worked with, until the eve of the campaign -- and the modest but genuine achievements of Butler's offensive. He also does a nice job of handling the Confederate side of the hill as well.

This was a wonderful resource for me when I was writing And Keep Moving On: The Virginia Campaign, May-June 1864, and I heartily recommend it.

This is such an outstanding account of a Civil War campaign that I try to reread it every year or two. Aside from
being a great account of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign,
it is such a welcome change from so mant of the books currently being sold under the description of Civil War history, when they are in reality just junk. This is basically
a "how to" book on how to write and bring to life a Civil War
campaign, especially welcome in that it deals with a relatively obscure campaign in 1864 Virginia. Buy this book!

Wonderful description of the Union successes in almost capturing the little protected Petersburg and the incredulous defense by Confederate forces against huge odds. This book has details on the campaign that actually starts from the Suffolk area where Union cavalry penetrate the lightly defended no man's land southeast of Petersburg outside of Suffolk that even today is lightly populated. The Union cavalry penetrate through small towns like Ivor on route 460 and Windsor heading all the way to the Weldon railroad south of Petersburg. This raid rivals the Grierson raid made during that was made during the Vicksburg campaign. The audaciousness of the Union cavalry
led by Kautz in a series of raids below and above Petersburg rivals Stuarts trip around McClellan in 1862. This is excellent writing as Robertson writes in efficient prose about the early aspects of the Petersburg campaign that has not gotten enough print. The book follows Pickett's stressed out attempts to protect Petersburg with just a few thousand troops and his physically collapsing as soon as Beuraguard arrives to take command. The book also describes the fluttered attempt by Butler's surprise move on Petersburg that fails only because Generals like William Smith stop their attack impressed by Confederate forces that establish a bold front with small numbers, numbers so small that Smith could have steam rolled them and entered Petersburg. The book also describes Beauregard's attempts to get Lee's attention to get more troops and the description of the strained relationship between the two. Very well written description of the Confederate defense of Drewery's Bluff on the James (a wonderful tour stop today) and the counter attack along the Bermuda 100 that seals Butler's forces on the Peninsula as a "cork in a bottle" as Grant was alleged to have said. The author makes a good point that Grant's continued attack of Lee at the Wilderness and Spotsylvania may also have been to divert Confederate pressure and attention north away from Butler to protect Butler's forces allowing an opportunity for victory. The defense of Petersburg is very exciting as the Confederates thin defenses and response forces barely held on for modest reinforces defeating the Union attack. It's truly a miracle that the Confederates held on. This compact book tells the story rapidly but is well written with an easy to read style.

"Not only am I a Catholic," McLuhan candidly reveals conversationally, but the worst kind--a convert!" Everyone who knew that tidbit of information about the guru of media probably couldn't help wondering if it made a difference, and if so, how. As this book reveals, it did--at least to McLuhan. In that context, he was not only experimenting in the realm of media, and exploring its effects, but was also in the swirl of events surrounding Vatican II. While his books chronicled the former interest and passion, culminating in the photo-montage collaborations with Quentin Fiore, The Medium is the Massage and War and Peace in the Global Village, almost nothing came to light of the latter involvement. Until now, that is. Included in this volume are four interviews and numerous letters on all things Catholic and all things media, written at a time when the former was in a time of turbulent upturn, and the latter only beginning to be explored. The most interesting essays concern the interaction of the two: the now common complaint that no one in the Church seems to have any understanding of "electric media," and that some of the modernizing efforts of Vatican II were, in fact, rendering it more, not less, out of step with the times. Priests and nuns were abandoning collars and habits, he noted, just when young people were donning costumes and dressing up.

As a convert, McLuhan in some ways held surprisingly traditional Catholic views, and in candid letters he concisely and engagingly explains why. The first essay examines his debt to G.K. Chesterton, a writer who now, fifty years later, is being rediscovered. Some of the ideas in these essays are quizzical, and you can't help pondering them, such as the idea in a piece called "Liturgy and Media," that North Americans go outside to be alone, and inside for society, but that in Europe, it's the other way around. This book is filled with those sorts of little insights that you find yourself wondering about and debating. There are a couple essays I would have left out--they either seem too far from the topic or too "top shelf" to engage casual readers. Even so, this is one of the most readable and understandable of McLuhan's books. Even decades after he wrote, his ideas jump out of the page and his insights seem crisp and fresh. His solutions too, seem fresh and original, even if untried. For all his relevance in the 'sixties, his ideas may only now be coming into their own, and there may have never been a better time to discover McLuhan.

This collection of McLuhan's interviews, lectures and essays relating to religion in the age of electronic communication is as essential to today's readers as they were when written. 1954's 'Catholic Humanism and Modern Letters' is simply stunning. McLuhan's religious understanding of the world should not be forgotten when considering the prophetic outlook of his other works.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Sharks in a think-tank.......2002-12-05

Very good expose, naming details, of the campaign to discredit environmentalism by the various conservative business groups at risk from public awareness of the issues. From the use of fronts, to the thinktanks to the public relations industry, the account shows how public opinion, which favors some kind of action on these crucial issues, has been consistently thwarted by the massive onslaught of opinion-manipulation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent investigation of corporate anti-environmentalism.......2001-06-19

I was recently invited to present seminars on the environmental backlash at Princeton and Stanford Universities, and Beder's well-researched book provided me with excellent information on some of the tactics employed by the political right aimed at undermining science. Most importantly, I want to put the negative reviewer's comments (below) into some perspective: in 1998, ALL environmental NGO's (including Greenpeace), spent a paltry 4.7 million dollars lobbying members of Congress, whereas all self interest groups spent a combined total of 76.2 million dollars on diverse issues ranging across the political spectrum. In the SAME year, the agribusiness industry alone spent 119.3 million dollars lobbying members of congress, whereas the combined expenditures of all industries added up to a staggering 1.2 billion dollars. This money includes only that used exclusively for lobbying, and not the "soft" money corporations use also to buy political influence. So, to answer the critic below, I would reiterate, we need to put this in perspective.

I don't want to use my position as a scientist to defend NGO's when they exaggerate problems, but I am frankly much more concerned when immensely powerful multinationals attempt to manipulate science. At present, corporate power is being used question the seriousness, or even the existence, of environmental problems such as global warming and rates of species extinction, even though these are areas where there is broad consensus amongst my peers. As Paul Ehrlich said, this has very little to do with science, but more to do with dirty politics with the agenda of looting and polluting for profit.

I applaud Beder for her efforts and this book reflects that.

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!.......2001-04-02

Well written and researched overview of the methods utilized by corporations to influence and dominate ecological discourse. Using the words and documents of the corporations, Beder shows how they consistantly (big surprise) put profits over the health and well-being of the community... Extremely relevant book, particularly with the most inept and bought president in the history of the nation in a position to enforce the corporate agenda...

                                                  5 out of 5 stars Totally eye-opening ! A top-quality exposé of bad commerce.......2001-01-16

Its hard to convey the value of this book by just writing a review.

Not only does it gives huge amounts of referenced data on what is going on with corporations and the environment, but it also clairfies how its all just about monster, money-making trans-national corporations who are out of control, and who are not even really trying to move towards the kind of business model outlined in wx3 natcap dot org, and to make it worse many of those trans-national corporations are themselves going down the tubes as outlined in wx3 fingleton dot net.

The same author has another majorly insightful book on the subject of the work-ethic.

                                                  You gotta get 'em.

The truth really does help to set us free.

Re: Greenpeace. Earlier this year Beder released a second edition of Global Spin in which she asks the question 'Is Greenpeace Selling Out?' This new inclusion, as well as the new section on the Sydney Olympics, adds to Beder's valuable evaluation of the global political, social and economic climate. An excellent read!
