Customer Reviews:
A Wonderful and Useful Book. Makes you want to get out and Explore!.......2007-04-01
As a New Mexcio native I have seen and owned a number of books about the mountains of the State. This book is well organized and laid out and it invites you to take time and learn about all the various mountain ranges available to us in NM. The photography is first class and inspiring in the their own right. I particularly like the organization and format of the book. The size is just right and the information is presented in a way that is fun and just enough to answer all the main questsions without going into an overload of detail. A high quality folded two sided map is included in a back pocket and the map augments the information inside the book. This is a great gift fo people who appreciate the wonders on NM and want to to learn and explore more. Mike Butterfield and Peter Greene have done a great job with the book. Five stars are not enough.
Wondrous guide for armchair travelers and inspiration for outdoor enthusiasts .......2006-12-09
Mike Butterfield's Guide to the Mountains of New Mexico is a rapturous photographic showcase of the natural beauty of New Mexico. Full-color images on almost every other page capture the rainbow hues of the desert, the tenacity of local flora, the glory of sunrise and sunset and the pristine powder of winter snow. Hiker, backpacker, and aspiring naturalist Peter Greene provides text filled with information about the formation of major ranges as well as their recreational opportunities, ecology, true tales of exploration, and pieces of lore. Multiple maps, including a separate fold-out map showing ranges in photographic relief, as well as detailed peak and wilderness lists round out this wondrous guide for armchair travelers and inspiration for outdoor enthusiasts contemplating a New Mexico visit.

Book Description
Many mushroom hunters prefer to do their foraging in the marketplace, where all the mushrooms are clearly labeled and safely edible. With this fact in mind, Arleen and Alan Bessette have written Taming the Wild Mushroom, one of the first cooking guides devoted exclusively to choosing and preparing the mushroom species now available in many grocery stores, supermarkets, and natural and whole foods markets. A dozen wild and cultivated species are covered in the book, including White Button, King Bolete, Oyster, Chanterelle, Morel, Paddy Straw, Wood Ear, Shiitake, Enokitake, White Matsutake, Black Truffle, and Wine-cap Stropharia. Easy-to-understand descriptions and excellent color photographs of each species help market foragers choose mushrooms in peak condition. Fifty-seven original, species-specific recipes, from appetizers, soups, and salads to meat and vegetarian entrees to sauces and accompaniments, offer dozens of ways to savor the familiar and exotic flavors of these mushrooms. A mouth-watering photograph accompanies each recipe.

Foundations in Microbiology w/bound in OLC card
ASIN: 0072994959 |
Book Description
Written with the non-major/allied health student in mind, the authors use common, everyday analogies to explain the many difficult microbiology concepts. Unlike any other allied health microbiology textbook on the market, the art program showcases beautiful illustrations with the use of bold, primary colors. This version of Foundations in Microbiology includes chapters 1 through 17 of the full text, teaching only the basic principles of microbiology and not covering the clinical aspects.
Customer Reviews:
Not the bargain you imagine.......2007-09-22
The price compared to the bookstore is great, but after purchasing and taking to class I realize why. It's missing several chapters at the end of the book. The hardcover you find in bookstores has at least 3 or more chapters. If your class doesn't go that far, then you're good. If it does...well then you're going to have problems. Everything else is fine, but you will be missing key information.
Micro on time.......2005-10-03
I got my book in a very timely manner. I was very pleased with the condition and the delivery time. Will surely buy again.

Book Description
Carlos A. Berenstein has had a profound influence on scholars and practitioners alike amid a distinguished mathematical career spanning nearly four decades. His uncommon capability of adroitly moving between these parallel worlds is demonstrated by the breadth of his research interests, from his early theoretical work on interpolation in spaces of entire functions with growth conditions and residue theory to his later work on deconvolution and its applications to issues ranging from optics to the study of blood flow. This volume, which celebrates his sixtieth birthday, reflects the state-of-the-art in these areas. Original articles and survey articles, all refereed, cover topics in harmonic and complex analysis, as well as more applied work in signal processing.
Contributors: C.A. Berenstein; R.W. Braun; O. Calin; D-C. Chang; G. Dafni; L. Ehrenpreis; G. Kaiser; C.O. Kiselman; P. Krishnaprasad; B.Q. Li; B. Matt; R. Meise; D. Napoletani; R. Poovendran; Y. Qiao; J. Ryan; C. Sadosky; D.C. Struppa; B.A. Taylor; J. Tie; D.F. Walnut; and A. Yger.

Good.......2007-07-01
Didn't care for the cover on first impressions but as you read and discover the story line its a great read. The way many of the I want to say disiples of this subject matter write is alarming in resemblance to each other. Not in style or anything but in the way it flows / reads. Great book.
Great Read.......2004-11-20
Great read, kept me going. Not meant to be everyone's taste, but if it is, you will enjoy. Fiction or non-fiction... we may never know. Why do we have to classify? For about the same price as going to a bad movie, you will almost certainly get more out of it, whether you liked it or not. Go for it!
Even if you don't believe it..........2003-01-10
...this book works. You don't have to believe Florinda Donner experienced or witnessed everything in this book to find something useful about her portrayal of the life of a Venezuelan healer and spiritualist (our modern, American terms). Read it like a novel that certainly feels like it was thoroughly researched. You'll find it an excellent journey to a place you've never been before.
the cubic centimeter of chance.......2002-09-24
I can't leave this marvelous book with a couple of limited reviews here at Amazon, even though it's been ten years since I last read it. Donner's story is simply a great human story; it's really about becoming more human. It's about the simple necessities in life, about the choices we are forced to make when choices are most limited, and about the life we find through that "cubic centimeter of chance." It gets outside -- thank God! -- the crime and punishment limited mentality of America....and of course that is why such a book will bore some readers and frighten others.
Florinda donner- grau.......2001-05-08
I did not find the book all that appealing. I purchased it, in hopes it would be simualar to Carlos Castaneda's work. It wasn't. It was very different from the work of Castaneda. It takes you to a whole different world and way of viewing the world. I did enjoy the book but thought it was very unspecified in making the points clear. It left me with a feeling of going nowhere. That's just my personal opinion though.

Product Description
This treasure-trove of information about a single Union regiment fills a gap in the history of New Jersey. It details the regiments formation in the midst of the draft riots of 1863 and its three major campaigns under General Sherman in 1864 and 1865. Based on original source material, much of it previously unexplored, the book vividly describes the experiences of the soldiers in a regiment that lost 25 percent of its recruits to desertion even before leaving New Jersey, and then effectively walked from Chattanooga to Washington, D.C., by way of Atlanta and Savannah. Five campaign maps and almost 70 photographs are supplemented by an appendix containing the rosters of all ten companies that made up the 33rd New Jersey. Notes, a bibliography, and an index complete the work.
Customer Reviews:
"Since this is a modern regimental....".......2006-07-23
John Zinn has produced a readable and useful history of a New Jersey regiment that was raised during the 1863 draft riots, was sent to the front under guard, served in the Eleventh and Twentieth Corps in Sherman's army, and marched to the sea. The title refers to one quarter of the men deserting the unit, mostly while the regiment was being organized in New Jersey. State and local bounties being paid in full led to a rash of bounty jumpers and the 33rd suffered greatly from them. However, Zinn would rather deal with the men who served, rather than those who deserted, and so focuses on the unit's military career: Missionary Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign (the 33rd suffered the highest casualties of any Federal unit at the Battle of Peach Tree Creek), and the March to the Sea and the Carolinas. Zinn generally writes well and has discovered a trove of letters and diaries to flesh out his text. There are campaign maps, but no battle maps. The text is liberally illustrated with clear photos of the officers and some enlisted men. The 33rd started as a Zouave unit with a unique uniform that was worn through the Atlanta Campaign. He does not include any post-war biographical information and I was left asking what happened to his major characters. His notable manner of writing is to begin too many of his sentences with "Since...." Since this happens in most paragraphs, it is very distracting. Since no editor caught this mannerism, perhaps the reader could turn it into a drinking game: drink a sip of your favorite libation each time you read it. You wouldn't get very far. Overall, though, this is a fine book about an interesting unit and Zinn should be commended for its publication.

Book Description
One of the core assumptions of recent American foreign policy is that China's post-1978 policy of "reform and openness" will lead to political liberalization. This book challenges that assumption and the general relationship between economic liberalization and democratization. Moreover, it analyzes the effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) liberalization on Chinese labor politics.
Market reforms and increased integration with the global economy have brought about unprecedented economic growth and social change in China during the last quarter of a century. Contagious Capitalism contends that FDI liberalization played several roles in the process of China's reforms. First, it placed competitive pressure on the state sector to produce more efficiently, thus necessitating new labor practices. Second, it allowed difficult and politically sensitive labor reforms to be extended to other parts of the economy. Third, it caused a reformulation of one of the key ideological debates of reforming socialism: the relative importance of public industry. China's growing integration with the global economy through FDI led to a new focus of debate--away from the public vs. private industry dichotomy and toward a nationalist concern for the fate of Chinese industry.
In comparing China with other Eastern European and Asian economies, two important considerations come into play, the book argues: China's pattern of ownership diversification and China's mode of integration into the global economy. This book relates these two factors to the success of economic change without political liberalization and addresses the way FDI liberalization has affected relations between workers and the ruling Communist Party. Its conclusion: reform and openness in this context resulted in a strengthened Chinese state, a weakened civil society (especially labor), and a delay in political liberalization.

Book Description
Which is worse, cows or condos? Can the public lands be "saved" if the private lands are paved? What does the future hold for the West's vaunted open lands, its ever more precious water, and its fire-prone forests? Is ranching a doomed mythas its critics chargeor the key to real conservation?
The Western range is America's most legendary landscape. It is also among its most threatened and most fiercely contested. More than 400 million acres of the West are used to raise livestock: half of the land privately owned and half of it public. In recent decades, the private lands have been rapidly converting to residential development, both around booming cities and in remote, scenic, "exurban" areas. The public half of the range has become mired in political battles and lawsuits between environmentalists, ranchers, and public agencies. In Working Wilderness Nathan Sayre examines an unusual alliance that has worked for ten years to answer these questions and preserve the wide open range: The Malpai Borderlands Group. 50 color & b/w photos.

Saving Land from the Developers .......2007-09-13
In the early 1990s the Nature Conservancy purchased the Gray Ranch in the bootheel of New Mexico, the most ecologicially diverse area of the United States. I've always resented that the Conservancy resold the ranch to a private foundation and thus denied public access to a huge (321,000 acres) and spectacular wilderness. This book explains the factors leading to the sale and resale of the Gray Ranch. I now understand the Conservancy's motives -- but I still think the Gray Ranch should have been made accessible, at least on a limited basis, to a public hungry for wide-open spaces.
The owners of the Gray Ranch and a dozen other big ranchers make up the Malpai Borderlands Group in the high, wide, and lonesome country of southwestern New Mexico and adjacent Arizona. The ranchers have put their land in conservation easements to protect it from one of the worst environmental threats to the West: sub-division of big ranches into five acre ranchettes. The Malpai ranchers are also in the forefront of developing new and improved practices of managing rangeland. All in all, they're a damned good bunch of people. I would hope that their dedication to preserving open space would spread, especially to the ranches just across the border in Mexico.
Not mentioned in this book is another huge threat to the environment along the border: the proposed Wall to keep out illegal aliens which will also inhibit the movement of jaguars, ocelots, antelope, deer, and a host of other creatures who need to pass back and forth over the border in search of water and food.
"Working Wilderness" features wonderful photographs -- alas, not all of them labeled -- and an informative text about the Malpai Borderlands and the people who live and work there. There are sections about preserving, endangered species, the use of fire as a management tool, profiles of ranchers and conservationists, and a message that cooperation is possible between cowboys and environmentalists to preserve the greatest asset of the Western United States: open space and room to breathe.

Land management issues in the West: hotbed of contention.......2006-04-23
WORKING WILDERNESS: THE MALPAI BORDERLANDS GROUP AND THE FUTURE OF THE WESTERN RANGE may sound so specialized that one would think it limited only to college-level regional holdings - but it's not. The Western range covers the extent of America's western landscape and its history reveals it's one of the most fiercely contested areas in the country when it comes to land management issues. Private lands have lately been changing to residential development, further involving political and social issues conflicts, which are chronicled in WORKING WILDERNESS. Here geography professor Nathan Sayre examines the alliances that have worked to preserve the open range, The Malpai Borderlands Group, and provides an unusual expose of their efforts.
