A good balance.......2000-09-26
A very well written and colorful book with detailed yet easily understandable diagrams and figures. The text is written for those with little background in ecology yet is detailed enough not to be vague for those familiar with the science and with Minnesota. It was required reading in some ecology classes at the Univ. of Minnesota, yet is sits well as a coffee table book.

A very well-written colorful book with detailed yet easily understandable diagrams and figures. The text is balanced for those who know little of ecology yet provides enough detail to not be vague for those familiar with the science and with Minnesota. A darn good book for those wanting to know about the natural history of Minnesota. Big pictures. Was required reading in some ecology classes at the University of Minnesota, yet sits well as a coffee table book.

I loved it !.......2006-08-03
Wow tough crowd.I bought my copy off e bay for $20 ...got it yesterday in the mail and could not put it down. While it does not have a lot of technical info ,dates ,names etc I found it to be an exciting personal account of the final year of airwar over the Western front.I reccomend it to anyone interested in first person German Memoirs.
A good book, in spite of what others may say........2006-06-19
I just finished this book, having borrowed it from my school library. I was pretty well annoyed at the resonses of some of the other, short-sighted reviews to be found here and felt compelled to tell you the truth. In short, this is a very good, honest book detailing the experiences of "another face in the croud", if you will. Bloemertz was a German fighter pilot who risked his life on a daily basis flying for what he believed in... the protection of his homeland. He was not an idealist by any means. He only did his best to try and stem the tide of bombers raining death and ruin upon his country. No, this book isn't the best written piece of literature... rather it reads like a diary. The words are true, heartfelt, and honest. Although some of the previous reviewers seem to expect every author to be Tolkien or Hemmingway, this book is very well written considering the fact that Bloemertz was an ordinary man trapped in extraordinary circumstances. I hope that you'll read it, lest the truth of human suffering be forgotten.
Really faceless.......2002-09-23
Yes, the Germans lost hundreds of faceless young fighter pilots in WW II, mainly in the final years (44/45). But I think Bloemertz must have been really "faceless", because he gave us absolutely no hint about where he was fighting, which unit he was fighting, who were his pals, NOTHING!!!! Some anonymous writer could have written this.
I understand that this is kind of poetry, but it's a frustratingly poor reading. I do not recommend it to anyone!
Memoir from one who was not an ace........2002-08-25
What went on in the minds of those teen-agers and young men who took to their fighters and tried to stop the aerial juggernaught that was the eighth air force and the RAF? Translated to English in the fifties, "Heaven Next Stop" offers us a valuable insight. Thousands upon thousands of young German Luftwaffe pilots were shot down in their fighters on the Western front. Few survived the war, and even fewer of those were accomplished aces. "Heaven Next Stop" is the story of one of those faceless thousands of young men who made up the 90% of the German Fighter Force - men who rarely scored in combat, and had enough trouble just surviving their encounters with Allied aircraft.
If you are looking for a detailed history about an "ace", full of pertinent unit and pilot data, this is not it. This is a young man's overall impressions on his wartime experiences, at times more concerned with his personal life and relationships with his friends than with statistics and his combat performance. Bloemertz despairs as his comrades disappear from the squadron almost daily, and his countrymen are obliterated in their cities; all victims of the constant grind of aerial combat at the hands of the ever-increasing Allied formations.
If you've read your share of WW2 Pilot memoirs I think you'll find this book both interesting and refreshing, portraying almost a bystander's view of a front-line Luftwaffe unit on the Western Front.
I regret ever buying this "book'"!!!!.......2001-12-08
simply put, the worst air combat narrative I've ever read. It lacks facts, it lacks characters,... enough! Even remembering its flaws to write this review makes me angry!!!

Book Description
This volume focuses on solutions to complex ecological problems with the objective of developing a new science for sustainability. Improving the health of people and animals, and improving the health, integrity or sustainability of ecosystems are laudable and important objectives. Can we do both? No ecosystems are untouched by human activity, and it appears that the world's ecosystems are reaching the limits of their ability to adapt to human impacts. The book draws on fields as diverse as epidemiology and participatory action research, philosophy and environmental sciences to examine this vital issue.

Customer Reviews:
Wow, lots of jealous reviewers here.......2006-03-02
Who probably wish they could look half as good as Jose's ex-wife. While her tale wasn't the most profound or riveting, it wasn't anything to scoff at, either. Unless you people have walked in similar shoes, shut the hell up with your judgments - what was it Jesus said? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone? Or something like that, but you get the point.
It's funny how women get blamed for a men's misbehavior, even though Jessica ADMITS that she was addicted and co-dependent on her relationship to Jose. We forgive drugs addicts, alcoholics, even gambling addicts, yet when a woman, and an attractive one at that, is stuck in a rut, she receives the big brush off, is labeled a gold-digger, a bimbo, an idiot, she should have "known better," etc etc etc....Yet everyone else is entitled to forgiveness, compassion, and understanding.
I found the former Mrs. Canseco's story to be of some use as perhaps another woman in a simiar situation will recognize the signs and bail out before her own self esteem spirals further downward. One thing you petty naysayers need to remember is how young she was when she met him. How many times do we hear of the influential older man taking a naive woman as his partner and molding her into what suits his needs? A man with a healthy self esteem would want to find an equal partner, not a young, unsuspecting female he can crap on. (Another similar scenario would be OJ and Nicole Simpson). Yet Jessica is blamed for being an unsuspecting woman, then a (co-dependent) addict, and she still gets reamed for trying to find her own way (whether it be posing in Playboy or writing this book).
As for the comments on being an unfit mother, and the reviewer who wrote that Jose would make a better parent only because he did steroids, you have got to be kidding. Another case of misogyny and sexism - does the same reviewer blame Nicole Brown Simpson for her own murder and the murder of Ron Goldman?
Maybe Jessica is cashing in on the Canseco name, but after all she's been through, I say she is well deserving of doing so.
Also, if you are going to judge someone by their recreational drug use and sexual exploits, I suggest you move out of the country, hell, move off the planet and colonize one of your own - news for you - a lot of people experiment and it doesn't make them UNFIT or BAD and in fact, I admire her candor for coming out because it is an integral part of the story and relates to how BAD she felt about herself, and how she used drugs to escape and tried to save her marriage by pleasing Jose.
However, I suspect it's a case of the pot calling the kettle black.
I will sum up this review by saying that while the book was enjoyable and a fast read, I do wish I had saved my money by going to the library instead of purchasing it. As I stated, it wasn't groundbreaking enough to part of my book collection.
1 star, but it's not her........2006-02-10
From the Playboy pics, it looks like she is on steroids, too. Trophy wife, but aren't trophies made of plastic?
Repetitively boring.......2006-01-11
I bought this book because I already knew what Jose had to say, but wanted to hear what Jessica had say. The 1st half of the book she said absolutely nothing except repeat how she would catch Jose cheating, they would fight, break up, and get back together again. In fact she just repeats this throughout the whole book. How many times can you read the same story before you get bored?? You really get to the point where you just want to slap her and knock some sense into her for being so stupid.
I really dont know why I kept reading this book. I kept hoping something eventfull would happen, but it never really did. I wouldnt recommend this book unless you want to hear an ex-wifes story about how her husband cheats on her and abuses her in a never ending cycle of 230+ pages
What a way to live a life, it's a Juicy story indeed........2005-12-04
When watching major league baseball on TV you often see the camera pan to the ever supportive wives dutifully sitting at the park supporting their husbands. After reading this book I'll never think of them in the same way.
'Juicy,' a neat take off on Jose Canseco's book 'Juice,' is written by his second ex-wife. What a tale! Most of us grow up in dysfunctional families, most of us then create dysfunctional families of our own as we copy/work through/try to fix/live as we grew up.
This story though creates new (to me at least) boundries in the concept. More than just dysfunctional, these two are nuts. They are both beautiful people, living with more money than they can count, and never really growing up.
I found ths to be a fascinating book. It reads like a novel. Even though you know the ending, each chapter left me in amazement as to what they could come up with next. I realize that this is just her story, and that his story of the maeeiage would be different but who cares. This is not a story with a great deal of depth, but it is JUICY.
"Trashy" Would be a Better Title.......2005-11-28
I'm afraid it's a little hard to feel sympathy for a woman, however young, who enters into a relationship with a known womanizer - with a MLB star at that, whom are notorious for being less than faithful) - then sticks with him when she knows he's cheating on her from the start. It's harder still to like a woman who then places the blame numerous times on the "poor parenting" and lack of values instilled by her parents. The person I feel the most sympathy for is her mother, who may not have been a role model, but at least seemed to unconditionally love her children and tried to be supportive. Was it really necessary for her to tell her family secrets? While she may want a crack at fame and fortune, I'm afraid she's book-worthy for no reason other than being the ex-wife to a MLB player.
I give her credit for at least being honest in hindsight and taking her share of the blame in many of the situations, even when it makes her unsympathetic - and that makes her likeable. I could better understand her situation had Jose Canseco changed after their relationship began - but it seems like he was an uncommunicative, selfish, arrogant person from the day they met, who never treated her well. Jessica allowed herself to be bought by her attraction to him, his lifestyle and his fame - whether she ever really loved him isn't clear - but for all that, it got her nothing but unhappiness.
For all her harsh words regarding her parents, maybe one day she'll grow up and realize they're just people too - and everyone makes mistakes. Doesn't seem to have stopped her from making her share of mistakes, as I consider her Playboy stint. While she may have divorced Jose, she doesn't seem to have divorced herself of the idea of fame - and her use of his fame for her own means seems contradictatory of what she claims to have set out to do - free herself of him and move on to an independent life being a good parent to her daughter. I don't mean to be harsh myself, but so far, a pretty face and body is what Jessica has traded on all her life and we all know that doesn't last forever.
Book Description
"Centeno's book balances shrewdly between identifying distinctive properties of Latin American national patterns, on one side, and integrating Latin American histories into international comparisons, on the other. Ingeniously piecing together fugitive evidence on wars, military organization, commemorations, taxation, and state structure, he thereby challenges two extreme tendencies: to treat Latin America as a failed Europe, and to stress the utter particularism of Latin America."Charles Tilly, Columbia University
"Miguel Angel Centeno's trailblazing book sheds much new light on Latin America by paying proper attention to its distinctive ways of making war and the connections of warfare to state development, to national identities, and to the nature of citizenship."John Markoff, University of Pittsburgh
What role does war play in political development? Our understanding of the rise of the nation-state is based heavily on the Western European experience of war. Challenging the dominance of this model, Blood and Debt looks at Latin America's much different experience as more relevant to politics today in regions as varied as the Balkans and sub-Saharan Africa.
The book's illuminating review of the relatively peaceful history of Latin America from the late eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries reveals the lack of two critical prerequisites needed for war: a political and military culture oriented toward international violence and the state institutional capacity to carry it out. Using innovative new data such as tax receipts, naming of streets and public monuments, and conscription records, the author carefully examines how war affected the fiscal development of the state, the creation of national identity, and claims to citizenship. Rather than building nation-states and fostering democratic citizenship, he shows, war in Latin America destroyed institutions, confirmed internal divisions, and killed many without purpose or glory.
Customer Reviews:
A Solid Book.......2007-06-17
This book focuses on the themes of war and the nation-state in nineteenth Mexico and the republics of South America; and the approach is highly inspired by Charles Tilly's work on Europe, although Centeno derives entirely different conclusions regarding nation-state formation in Latin America. The work is original, full of data, and the writer is clever, which enables the reader to follow the abstract (academic) concepts of the book with ease. Centeno's work is an intelligible and thought provoking read. He is a sociologist, and his approach to nineteenth century Latin American history is a significant contribution to the literature on this period. Any student of Latin America or any student interested in nation-state building should read this book.

Classic - Easy and informative (but a bit dry) read.......2006-07-21
This is a seminal work in political science for both its study of media effects and its use of experimental methodology. In regards to the latter, this is arguably the book that placed experimental methods on "map". In terms of its media findings, it does an outstounding job of documenting agenda-setting and priming effects; also, there is a lot of sub-analysis that nicely details which people are most prone to and what type of coverage enhances such effects. That said, the findings will likely strike many people today as fairly obvious, but this was not the case at the time (a testament to the research agenda I&K established). While the agenda-setting, priming, and now framing research has progressed in the last two decades, this is still an excellent introduction to the topic. And it is a pretty easy and quick read (only 130 pages).
Start Here.......2004-04-25
Fairly quick, but vitally important read to anyone studying the media, communication, and politics. Experimental design demonstrates the media has the ability to set the national agenda, prime what people think is important within issues, and frame the way we think about the world. This is the seminal and original work in the field.

Capture the imagination.......2006-10-15
In Wild Love Affair, Connie Bransilver writes that "Orchids capture the imagination . . . evoke an insatiable passion, a sensual appeal . . . [and] cast a powerful spell." That is exactly what she has achieved in this beautiful book. It is a sensual delight of photography from a passionate orchid aficionado. Bransilver captures the imagination of orchid lovers and those who merely appreciate the beauty of nature in all its forms. A wonderful celebration of Florida flora.......2004-07-09
This book from Nature photographer/writer Connie Bransilver is a true celebration of Florida's native, mystical orchids. 'Wild Love Affair', which is more photo-poetry than field guide, gives colorful insight into the intoxicating world of 'Orchid Fever', an epidemic which regularly captures the minds and hearts of sunshine state naturalists. A combination of essays from leading orchid experts gives the book an authoratative feel, without lulling a reader to sleep with page after page of textbook style writing. The photographs, which are the highlight of this hard cover edition, get you intimately close to these elegant flowers without having to trudge through thick swamp land to enjoy them. Visitors to my home have a hard time putting it back down on the coffee table once they have picked it up! If you have even the slightest interest in Florida flora, scenery, or entrancing color photography...this book is a must!
