A wealth of walks in SE Mass.......2003-09-30
This book covers more of SE Mass (Seekonk, Fall River, Dartmouth, etc) than does the author's first volume ("Nature Walks in Eastern Massachusetts"). This book has seven nature walks south of I-495 and I-95. You might also check out Falcon's "Hiking Massachusetts" which offers more information on each hike and doesn't overlap much with this volume.

Customer Reviews:
California's Coastal Communities: Coronado to Crescent City.......2007-07-01
Although the book has the word "driving" in the title, it really is not a road guide to California's Pacific Coast. Instead, this nice little travel book covers smaller coastal communities where one can visit for a weekend and take a break from the hustle and bustle of life. Of the many towns listed, only San Diego is a large metropolitan area. For the most part, readers are treated to towns such as San Clemente, Laguna Beach, Pismo Beach, Monterey, and numerous smaller communities like Shelter Cove, Bodega Head, and Trinidad.
On the whole, this is a decent little guidebook. Each destination is given a page or two describing the area, a list of lodging and campgrounds, diners and fine restaurants, and descriptions of nearby beaches and parks. Local activities and festivals are also listed for each location and rough price guides are given to help budget for the trip. I would like to have seen more attention given to state parks and beaches, and a little more natural history and photographs. But this guide does what it sets out to do and I will use it as a resource on my next trip along the coast.

Book Description
The book presents a comprehensive discussion of the most common microbicides (approx. 300) used for the protection of materials and processes against biodeterioration. The characteristics of each microbicide, e.g. chemical and physical properties, effectiveness and spectrum of efficacy, the knowledge of which is a prerequisite for the effective use of microbicides, are discussed. It is also informed about the toxicity and ecotoxocity of the microbicides. The corresponding depth of knowledge and experience makes uses of microbicides possible without damage to human health and environment. The corresponding legislative aspects are regarded in a special chapter.
This new book is not a simple revised new edition (second) of the Handbook
Microbicides for the Protection of Materials which appeared in 1993.
This edition is divided into two parts. In Part One 23 contributions of worldwide selected experts present extensively diversified information about:
-Microbicides with regard to the relationship between chemical structure and mode of action and activity,
-Research and development in consideration of registration procedures,
-Legislative aspects,
-The use of microbicides in the major application areas (18) which are described in detail.
The Microbicide Data is organized into 21 substance classes (e.g. alcohols, aldehydes, acids, amides, etc.) and collected in Part Two.
Part One signifies an important perfection and increase in actuality. In part two, `Microbicide Data' is an eagerly anticipated actual inventory of the old book. The combination of the two parts in one book is special and has resulted in the most authoritative information in the field. Accordingly this book will be invaluable not only to all those using microbicides, but also to teachers and students working in biodeterioration and anyone engaged in research and development in the microbicide field.

Book Description
N.G. de Bruijn was a well established mathematician before deciding in 1967 at the age of 49 to work on a new direction related to Automating Mathematics. In the 1960s he became fascinated by the new computer technology and decided to start the Automath project where he could check, with the help of the computer, the correctness of books on mathematics. Through his work on Automath de Bruijn started a revolution in using the computer for verification, and since, we have seen more and more proof-checking and theorem-proving systems.
Automath was written in Algol 60 and implemented on the primitive computers of the sixties. Thirty years on, both technology and theory have evolved a lot leading to impressive new directions in using the computer for manipulating and checking mathematics. This volume is a collection of papers with a personal flavour. It consists of 11 articles which propose interesting variations to or examples of mechanising mathematics and illustrate differ developments in symbolic computation in the past 35 years.
The first paper is by de Bruijn himself where he uses his experience of automating mathematics to reason about the human mind. After that a number of intriguing articles have been contributed by amongst others Henk Barendregt, who proposes a mathematical proof language between informal and formalised mathematics which helps make proof assistants more user friendly, and Robert Constable, explaining how Automath's telescopes, books and definitions compare to recent developments in computational type theory made by his Nuprl group. The volume further includes a strong argumentation by Arnon Avron that for automated reasoning, there is an interesting logic, somewhere strictly between first and second order logic, determined essentially by an analysis of transitive closure, yielding induction; and Murdoch Gabbay presenting an interesting generalisation of Fraenkel-Mostowski (FM) set theory within higher-order logic, and applying it to model Milner's p-calculus.

Book Description
First published in an era when most novels about young women concentrated on courtship and ended with marriage, The Recess (1783-1785) daringly portrays women involved in political intrigues, overseas journeys, and even warfare. The novel is set during the reign of Elizabeth I and features twin narrators, who are daughters of Mary, Queen of Scots, by a secret marriage. One of the earliest novels to convey the plot from multiple points of view, it was wildly popular in its day.
The Recess was one of the first Gothic novels ever published. With it, Sophia Lee pioneered the genre of historical fiction, in which imaginary characters are set among historical ones, and paved the way for Sir Walter Scott, Ann Radcliffe, and Jane Austen.

Book Description
On a frosty day in February 1862, hundreds gathered to watch the execution of Nathaniel Gordon. Two years earlier, Gordon had taken Africans in chains from the Congo -- a hanging offense for more than forty years that no one had ever enforced. But with the country embroiled in a civil war and Abraham Lincoln at the helm, a sea change was taking place. Gordon, in the wrong place at the wrong time, got caught up in the wave.
For the first time, Hanging Captain Gordon chronicles the trial and execution of the only man in history to face conviction for slave trading -- exploring the many compelling issues and circumstances that led to one man paying the price for a crime committed by many. Filled with sharply drawn characters, Soodalter's vivid account sheds light on one of the more shameful aspects of our history and provides a link to similar crimes against humanity still practiced today.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of Insight.......2007-09-14
Hanging Captain Gordon is a good review of the slave trade and the majority attitudes that prevailed just before the start of the Civil War. The book arouses sympathy for Captain Gordon's widow and children, revulsion over the treatment of African captives, and horror at the crudeness of our entire justice system in the 18th and 19th centuries. It does not make me proud of my European ancestors. Anyone willing to critically evaluate American culture will benefit from reading this book.
Well worth the read!.......2007-07-02
Hanging Cpt. Gordon by Ron Soodalter was for me, an exceptional read. It's a non-fiction that reads like a novel, it's well written, and very fluid. The bulk of the books goes into the social and political sentiments of the mid 1800's especially as they related to slavery and the trafficking of slaves from the African continent to the Americas.
The author, I believe, pain stakingly and with great detail (20 pages of footnotes) painted a psychological picture of the major players, Cpt. Gordon, the prosecutor, the defense team (dream team of 1864) and of president Lincoln, and what motivated these men. We come to see Cpt. Morgan as an unfortunate but wretched soul, whose life and death had to be used as an example, that trafficking in slaves, along with slavery in the territories and new states would not be allowed.
From an historical stand point, it was interesting to see how New York and the other eastern seaboard states were heavily invested in the slave trafficking that was vital to the supply of slaves to the south. Slave trafficking florished during the 40 year period that anti trafficking laws were on the books as a capital offense. Trafficking florished and no one was hanged because of the involvement of New York financiers, insurers, ship builders, legal community and politicians.
This is not a feel good history book, but for those that want an accurate account of what took place in this country during the 1800's as it ralates to slavery, slave trafficking and slave laws, this is the book.
The perfect confluence of timing and circumstances would doom Captain Gordon.......2006-04-09
The law on the books was quite clear in 1860. Any American convicted of engaging in the slave trade was subject to the death penalty. Surely Captain Nathanial Gordon from Portland, Maine had no reason to believe that this could ever happen to him as he sailed toward Africa on just such a mission in the Spring of 1860. For up until this time not a single American citizen had ever been sentenced to die for this most heinous of crimes. Yes, the slave trade was alive and well in the year before the American Civil War would commence and a great many Americans were still involved up to their ears. "Hanging Captain Gordon" is author Ron Soodalter's remarkable account of the life and death of one Captain Nathanial Gordon who would pay the ultimate price for essentially being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This is a captivating book that recalls a series of events that history had largely forgotten. It is compelling reading.
Most Americans will be shocked and disgusted when they learn just how widespread slave trading was in the first six decades of the nineteenth century. And what is most disturbing is how complicit many Americans were in this practice. There was lots of money to be made in the slave trade. Here in the U.S. many "respected" businessmen participated as investors in such enterprises. They would outfit the vessels and make all of the other necessary arrangements to carry out the sordid mission. Many of the the most prominent businessmen in New York and other major northern cities were involved. Many other Americans were all too happy to work as officers and crew members on these ships. And just in case someone was caught in the act there were legions of corrupt politicians and judges to provide cover. And so in 1860 as a divided America prepared to face off on the question of slavery here at home a lively slave trade continued to flourish in ports such as Havana and Rio de Janiero. It was Captain Gordon's great misfortune to be nabbed by the American steamer USS Mohican as he sailed westward with some 897 slaves on board. They were packed below like so many sardines. Nathanial Gordon and his crew had been caught red-handed at a time when the political winds at home were shifting dramatically. For it would come to pass that Nathanial Gordon of Maine would be made an example of. History would demand that he pay the ultimate price.
I found "Hanging Captain Gordon" to be very thoroughly researched and particularly well written. This one held my interest from cover to cover. Ron Soodalter gives the reader a very thorough picture of all of the forces at work and players involved in the highly charged atmosphere surrounding the trial and conviction of Captain Gordon. In addition, Soodalter presents more compelling evidence at just how great a President Abraham Lincoln really was. As many in American bombarded the President with requests for a pardon for Captain Gordon Lincoln resisted. He saw the hanging of Captain Gordon as an opportunity to send a clear message to all that slave trading would no longer be tolerated. In the end Lincoln was correct. Slave trading would largely disappear for nearly a century.
Ron Soodhalter concludes "Hanging Captain Gordon" with a "Afterword" on how new forms of slave trading have begun to re-appear in recent years. His examples are surely food for thought. "Hanging Captain Gordon" is packed with material I had never seen anywhere else. This one is an absolute must for history buffs. Highly recommended!
Explaining why slavery is still commonplace and unforgiveable.......2006-02-11
Mr. Soodalter does an amazing job by taking a little known event and giving it life. His characters and events are so real and the lack of support to end slavery is shameful. Although there was legislation, the politicians did little to prevent slavery from continuing (they all had them) and Soodalter shows how little things have changed in the world in his final chapter. This is an adventure, a great story, told by an excellent historian and story-teller. This is a must read!!

Book Description
During May and June 1862, General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson catapulted from relative obscurity to perpetual fame on the basis of his operations in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Two victories in two days, June 8 and 9 at Cross Keys and Port Republic, cemented Jackson's success in the Valley Campaign and ensured him a lasting place in the annals of American military history. Conquering the Valley examines Cross Keys and Port Republic in tactical detail and also unveils the experiences and feelings of the soldiers who fought there.
Customer Reviews:
A small battle and a great story.......2006-12-27
No one today knows more about the Army of Northern Virginia and Stonewall Jackson than Robert Krick. Some historians are great researchers and some are great writers. Krick is both. He has taken the battle of Port Republic and made it into a fascinating story. Few people, other than die hard Civil War buffs, are aware of this conflict in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It was the last battle of Stonewall Jacksons' brilliant Valley Campaign. The book covers the battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic and the events leading up to them. There is the tragic story of the charge of the 8th New York, the bold attack by Sprigg Carroll and his men, the courage of Sam Moore, and the vicious fight for the "Coaling." This is historical writing at it's best, and Krick is the master of the subject.
First Rate.......2004-02-20
This is the first addition to my collection focusing on the Valley Campaign, and what better author is there to choose than Robert Krick? None, when we're talking about Jackson and his Valley Army. I have now read this book and found it to be an excellent work on the twin battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic. Krick does a fine job describing the action in exciting detail. The maps are very, very well done and go down to the regimental level, always a plus in my book. Also, a note of caution is in order. Apparently some maps in the original hardcover edition were missing a lot of text labels. I don't know if this has since been fixed, but be aware of this flaw when looking at the hardcover edition.
Lots of Detail - Best Telling of Port Republic : Nice Town.......2002-09-04
This is the most documented source on Jackson at the battles of Port Republic and Cross Keyes where Jackson's army stand between two armies that are trying to trap and squeeze him, which they almost succeed in doing at the start. Like the great author of the Gettysburg series Harry W. Pfanz, Robert Krick is the ultimate researcher on the tactics of Stonewall Jackson. Like Pfanz with Gettysburg, Krick is ultimately familiar with his subject particularly because he was the Superintendent of all the battlefields around Fredericksburg (Spotsylvania, Chancellorsville, Fredericksburg and the Wilderness). Krick is also the grand researcher of soldiers' letters and writings and through his research he has weeded out fact from fiction. Examples are the puffed writings of Trimble about his brigade at Cross Keyes. Krick reveals that Trimble's writings often neglected the role of other units on the field while heaping a disproportionate amount of praise on his own. Discerning historical inaccuracies is one reason why Krick's books provide an accurate portrayal of a battle or the campaign. Others that suffer from exaggeration, misperceptions and/or ego inflation are Chief of Staff Dabney and Colonel Imboden. The references to Colonel Dabney are humorous to some degree as Dabney performs well in some areas, he does try hard but in a lot of cases he is not as effective as he seems to think. Imboden's false references to interaction with Jackson make one question his famous comments that he witnessed Lee's distressed comments after Picket's Charge.
The village of Port Republic is still a small town nestled against the South and North Rivers that form the South Shenandoah with Cross Keyes across the North River to the west. The area still looks the same with modest encroachment from Harrisonburg just west of Cross Keyes. Krick details a blow-by-blow account of the battle interlaced withy biographies of the participants, their role in battle and even quoting them from their own source material or from first person accounts about particular individuals.
I particularly found the beginning of this last battle of the famous Valley Campaign fascinating as Jackson, his staff, his wagons and a small infantry unit with novice artillery are leisurely enjoying a summers' day when suddenly a complete cavalry detachment bursts on the scene almost capturing Jackson and all his staff (bagged some). The disheartening failure of the Calvary after Turner Ashby's death left no protection or early warning of the Federal rush. The story of the small infantry detachment at the end of Main Street with a few guns of artillery banding together to hold off the union force is an inspiring story. They saved the wagon train and gave time for Jackson to coordinate portions of the majority of his army resting on the opposite riverbank in time to salvage his hold on this small town.
The description of Ewell's relatively easy and effective defense of Cross Keyes exemplifies Fremont's failure as a commander. The other high point of the book is the description of the desperate fighting northeast of Port Republic where Jackson transfers the bulk of his forces from Cross Keyes to Port Republic to defeat the Federals who are better positioned defensively with a particularly strong artillery detachment on the side of a mountain called the coaling. Only a desperate attack by Taylor's Division through course woods saves the day as Jackson's units on the flats take a pounding. Ewell coordinates well indicating a perfect and under appreciated subordinate to Jackson.
The maps are difficult to follow in the early beginning but the publisher produces them better toward the end and they become very helpful as they finally label the units.
Take this book after you read it to the town of Port Republic. There are very limited markers in town and at Cross Keyes 4 miles west, but the book and maps help you get a picture of the battles on land that is hardly changed. This is fascinating because the little town has a modest museum in the house that Turner Ashby was prepared for burial in (open only on Sundays) but no commercialism. The fishing and general store always has a pleasant person to help you out with some information. You need the book because you will have better information then what many of local folk can tell you at random. The vicious battle outside of Port Republic has a marker and parking lot on HWY 354 about 3 miles northeast of town. Again, the maps will help, as the area is still much the same at 100 years ago. A very low-key battlefield without any gratuitous designations but hopefully it will be protected some day with enhanced markers.
Oh by the way, Krick gets in his usual swipe at Longstreet by referring to Trimble as bombastic but not as bad as Longstreet. Looking for Krick's dig at Longstreet in any feature is similar to finding Alfred Hitchcock's cameo in all his movies. The similarity, they are always there, you just have to look and wait for them.
Fine writing, but fatally flawed maps.......1999-06-28
Robert K. Krick, a well known authority on the Army of Northern Virginia, has written a fine account of the culmination of the 1862 Valley Campaign at the Battle of Port Republic. Unfortunately, the maps, which are always an indispensible adjunct to military writing, are a shambles. Thanks, evidently, to an oversight by the publisher, about half of the numerous maps lack the textual labels to identify the various units. Thus, the reader is left to guess at just what the maps are depicting. A work that is otherwise as meritorious as this deserves far, far better care by the publisher than this one received.
An enjoyable read about a little known battle.......1998-05-04
I found this book to be well written, extensively researched and very well presented. It took me some time to get into the book but after the first few chapters I was hooked. The depth of information is excellent, the maps well presented, well placed and easy to read. I had no problems in reading this book and understanding the flow of the battle. The stories of the individuals involved in the fighting were interesting and did not distract you from the narrative. At first I thought the author may have had a Southern bias but I was wrong, he presented both sides well and he highlighted acts of bravery on both sides. I am still reading this book with but a few chapters to go and I have enjoyed it very much. In fact I have enjoyed it so much that I intend to order the author's 'Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain' as soon as I can. This book is well worth the time to read.

"Clueless out of Date".......2007-08-09
This book is of little use because it was published before several major changes to the Medicare program, most notably the introduction of Part D, the prescription drug benefit.
