5 out of 5 stars The only guide to Martinique.......2002-12-23

This is the guide that contains everything one needs for a vacation in Martinique. It gives details on activities ranging from free rum tastings to the volcano museum to Napoleon's Josephine to Gaugin, the painter. The guide is honest when rating attractions; only the most interesting are given three stars. I have looked at every guide to Martinique I could find, and this is the only one I would buy.

                  Book Description

This book is a compilation of techniques and devices for collecting and rearing insects that should appeal to educators as well as professional or amateur entomologists. Insects are easy to collect and raise and have a fascinating array of life histories, which make them great for classroom studies. With minimal space and costs, colonies of insects can be raised in classrooms for use in behavioral and physiological studies. The small size and tremendous reproductive capacity of insects are ideal for ecological studies of dispersion, predation, parasitism and reproduction in compressed timeframes and small areas relative to similar studies of larger organisms. This book explains the various techniques of how to build rearing devices and use insect collecting to stimulate insect exploration.

Anyone with basic hand tools, a little skill, and patience can construct these devices. A materials list, instructions for assembly, construction tips, and photographs are included for each device discussed in the text. Most of them require less than 1 hour assembly time and cost very little because they can be made from recycled items. There is also a review of simple statistics for use in the classroom, and, if appropriate, suggestions for classroom projects including simple statistical analyses.

                      Book Description

The first major poem in English literature, Beowulf tells the story of the life and death of the legendary hero Beowulf in his three great battles with supernatural monsters. The ideal Anglo-Saxon warrior-aristocrat, Beowulf is an example of the heroic spirit at its finest.

Leading Beowulf scholar Howell D. Chickering, Jr.’s, fresh and lively translation, featuring the Old English on facing pages, allows the reader to encounter Beowulf as poetry. This edition incorporates recent scholarship and provides historical and literary context for the modern reader. It includes the following:

                      an introduction
                      a guide to reading aloud
                      a chart of royal genealogies
notes on the background of the poem
                      critical commentary
glosses on the eight most famous passages, for the student who wishes to translate from the original
                      an extensive bibliography

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I wish this version were the accepted standard. . . .......2007-04-19

This edition is widely accepted as closer to the original than Heaney's, even by people who prefer the Heaney edition.

I am not one of those people. I have read Beowulf in several translations as well as in the original Old English, and this is the version I would recommend. I find it to be faithful, clear, and elegant.

The Heaney Beowulf is a great book for fans of Heaney (I enjoyed it myself in that capacity). The Chickering Beowulf is a great book for fans of Old English literature.

5 out of 5 stars The essential version.......2007-03-04

This is the essential version of Beowulf for anyone interested in really understanding the story and its setting. There are other dual-language translations but none that provide the same depth of background in introduction, commentary, and critical notes.
-- Christopher L. Webber, author of "Beyond Beowulf"

                      5 out of 5 stars A Great Book.......2007-01-14

A professional and scholarly translation. Having the Old English on one side and the modern English translation on the other is great. The notes about the style of ancient Germanic poetry, as well as notes about Old English are fascinating. The book is clear enough for beginners, but the extensive commentary (after the poem, and nearly half of the book) means that it is also a great read for experts as well. Altogether, an excellent book.

                      5 out of 5 stars The scholar's version.......2007-01-08

For someone like me who's fascinated by language, this is a great scholar's edition of Beowulf. The translation is easy to read and well synchronized with the original text. The preface and supplemental material are copious and thorough. This will be on my bookshelf for a long time.

                      5 out of 5 stars Chickering's translation.......2007-01-03

For those who wish to experience a faithful modern translation that retains all the beauty and poetic quality of the Old English text, this is the one. This updated version of Chickering's translation of Beowulf is even better than the original, which still remains vastly superior to all the rest. Seamus Heaney and Burton Raffel's versions aren't even close.

                        Book Description

In his dazzling new memoir, Richard Rodriguez reflects on the color brown and the meaning of Hispanics to the life of America today. Rodriguez argues that America has been brown since its inception-since the moment the African and the European met within the Indian eye. But more than simply a book about race, Brown is about America in the broadest sense-a look at what our country is, full of surprising observations by a writer who is a marvelous stylist as well as a trenchant observer and thinker.

Rodriguez has written an ambitious book: who else would be willing to take on the idea of "brown" and all it involves, from the many perspectives from which this writer sees? I teach a university course on Biography and Memoir and his is one of my favorite books to include. I love his attention to the role of the public library, schools, how religion divides and unites us. Increasingly we all live in a "brown" world and Rodriguez shows us how books and culture help us explore that world in its origins and awesome potential for good and for ill. His riffs are right-on target: Malcolm X as latter-day Puritan, Frederick Douglass on the same shelf with Benjamin Franklin in terms of writing memoirs that tell us how to live honestly in This America of Ours. The poetry of Rodriguez's language is not at all what we might come to expect from an analytical writer. His work is closer to poetry that looks back to the multiple historical origins of these Americas, asks about the originary moments of various races, cultures, religions coming together, and what has happened since. By writing evocatively, rather than cut-and-dry rants or analyses, Rodriguez does much to explore the structures that pervade and are promised in present-day America. Rodriguez is worth, will pay back in insights every bit of time you put into reading him. Maybe his identity isn't yours, maybe you will want to dismiss him, but if you read through, stay with this book, I promise - he will get under your skin.

This guy is full of it and full of himself. Wants to sound sooooooooooooooooo educated. Comes off sounding like a pretentious overcompensating guy with a real inferiority complex. Obviously has not come to a point of self-acceptance. It is a pity. I got the book in hopes of finding some help with my own Mexican-American son's struggles to fit in to either the Mexican or the "white" sides of his heritage. This book is NOT one I will leave around for him to read. I wonder how he got published.

                        3 out of 5 stars Brown.......2006-04-28

Brown is an interesting read and by no means is it an easy read. Rodriguez alludes to many different things, so a reader, such as myself, may not always be able to pick up on these allusions. This is a story, rather a collection of stories that highlights race, ethnicity, and identity in American culture. This is a dense read, not a quick and easy read. At first, I did not understand many of the things Rodriguez was saying, but as I progressed farther in the book, his writing became much more clear and understandable to me. In the end, I cannot say that I enjoyed the book but that I did find it an interesting read and worth my time.

4 out of 5 stars Feel free to step back and let some of it slide by.......2005-11-10

"Brown" is really a collection of disparate essays and personal musings that make no effort to come together at the end in any sort of traditional conclusion or overriding point. Not surprisingly the only truly linking theme is this idea, this social construction of "Brown," the book being simply a transcription of the world through the eyes of a man that has been brown his entire 50 or so years. While some find this style of writing important to the messsage of the book I find it confusing and often tiring ot read.
The book is full of lengthy explorations into terms and ideals, including "Hispanic," and when these complicated topics are combined with Rodriguez's contradicting and incongruent style it makes for a difficult read. "Brown" has a lot to say so be prepared to not only look deeply into the writer's true meanings but also to step back and allow some of his asides and obscure references to pass by without much attention.

4 out of 5 stars It's OK to be lost in the text..........2005-11-09

Rodriguez shows how some social conventions, such as the use of "Hispanic" and the wilderness connotation of "West," are in reality much more complicated, and he uses rich supplementary evidence to reflect the complexity of his topics.

Take the chapter "Gone West" as an example, to show how the "real West" is more than the traditional "wilderness," Rodriguez points out how Californians move eastwards to the "West," how the "gateway to West" has never been determined, how Ralph Lauren's interpretation of "Original Sin" used totally inaccurate Indian theme, how Adam and Eve were driven to the "east" of Eden where they "assume[d] the burden of time", how Asians moved "east" and Hispanics moved "north" to the American "West"...the list could go on. Rodriguez presents numerous "facts," including many personal experiences, to add more meanings to the idea of "West," and therefore breaks the conventional oversimplification of the phrase, "gone west."

You can be in awe of Rodriguez for how knowledgeable he sounds in the book, or you can be like me and get mad at him for making a simple thing extremely confusing.

Though the merits of the 1991 gulf war will no doubt be debated as long as there are politicians and historians, it might turn out to have made a significant contribution to the development of medicine. Thousands of veterans suffer from a nebulous constellation of ailments commonly referred to as Gulf War Syndrome (GWS), and they are pushing the fledgling field of psychoneuroimmunology to the forefront of research interest. Science journalist Jeff Wheelwright explores this unfamiliar territory through interviews with ailing veterans and their physicians, as well as larger-scale reporting from Congressional and military reports in The Irritable Heart. Familiar with the Persian Gulf region through his environmental coverage before and during the war, he is savvy enough to check claims of toxicity while retaining a healthy yet sympathetic skepticism. The veterans' stories are tragic, frustrating, and disturbing; their drive to at least name, if not cure, their problem stymied by a wall of institutional ignorance. Seemingly related to other medical mysteries like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, and fibromyalgia, GWS has helped launch research into the connections between the mind, the brain, and the immune system. Whether advances will come in time to help sufferers is an open question, but at least it is finally being asked. --Rob Lightner

                              Book Description

If oil, smoke, and nerve gas didn't cause Gulf War Syndrome, what did? Following the 1991 Persian Gulf war, thousands of U.S. military veterans developed illnesses that medical science was unable to understand. Ten years later many veterans still suffer, and the investigation has become bitterly polarized. Through five compelling case histories, science writer Jeff Wheelwright unravels the mystery of a real illness consisting of physical symptoms magnified and aggravated by psychological distress. His inquiry cuts through the web of epidemiological evidence, showing that oil, smoke, and nerve gas are unlikely culprits. Gulf War Syndrome bears an eerie resemblance to equally puzzling illnesses in the civilian population: chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, and multiple chemical sensitivity. Much of the blame for the impasse in understanding all of these conditions rests with modern medicine, which insists on dealing with body and mind separately. With profound insight, and profound compassion for so much unexplained suffering, the author takes the subject of chronic illness far beyond the medical aftermath of a desert war.

                              1 out of 5 stars Bad Methods, Self-serving Book.......2004-02-23

The book has some serious methodological flaws. Wheelwright has apparently chosen his subjects with care -- each winds up being dislikable, or is proven to be a liar. Wheelwright is disingenuous about his purposes, and condescends to the veterans in a coy way.

When it comes to the evidence, he has already decided, based on his work with oil spills and his reading of the Agent Orange literature, that Gulf War Illness(es) may be real, but since they can't be tied to any particular single event, they can't be paid for by the VA.

This book proposes to be in-depth reporting, but reveals a writer with an agenda, a science writer from Life magazine who ironically is unconcerned about environmental claims, and a method that is as badly flawed as the studies he attacks.

For an alternate viewpoint, read Seymour Hersh's _Against All Enemies: Gulf War Syndrome: The War Between America's Ailing Veterans and Their Government_.

                              5 out of 5 stars A humanist classic.......2001-08-25

A brilliant investigation into and meditation on the intersection of epidemiology, journalism, politics, and human suffering known as the Gulf War Syndrome. The book is sui generis, and as with many works of surpassing originality it may be overlooked today, but I predict people will be reading this humanist classic in a hundred years.

                              5 out of 5 stars A gripping read.......2001-05-23

This book is a remarkable portrait of a difficult and highly politicized medical phenomenon -- Gulf War Syndrome -- and its subsets, chronic fatigue syndrome, chemical sensitivities and fibromyalgia. Because of this overlap, many, many Americans will be tremendously interested by this book. It is deep and broad, and rich. Journalists and historians will also be fascinated by the writer's unusual and intelligent method, and the implications of the story. Wheelwright not only keeps you reading way past your bedtime, but reveals the complexities for victims, doctors, and the public's attitudes. Not glib, this book manages to paint a vivid picture of people and medical ideas without taking any shortcuts. A tremendous and really entertaining achievement which may sadly be overlooked in the trend towards simple blockbusters. You will be recommending it to others.

This book is a stunning achievement: it makes obscure and confusing science understandable, and discusses with accuracy and compassion the many different aspects of Gulf War Syndrome. I found that Wheelwright's voice, always confident and clear, was greatly reassuring. Very powerful. A must read for those interested in science, medicine and politics, and how they overlap.

The Irritable Heart is a stunning achievement, its calm, persuasive tone reveals the widespread suffering attributed to Gulf War Syndrome. It is excellently researched, clearly written. Wheelwright is a science writer who speaks from the heart.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a comprehensive history of the modern European Union.......2005-11-15

Booker and North have done yeoman work in exploring scores of original sources related to the modern European Union. Most impressively, they have returned to the 1920s, when the contemporary notion of "European Union" began. They note that an element of deception has been present since the very earliest years of the project, demonstrating that the idea's early exponents believed that their utopian ideals, whilst admirable, ought to be realized without the knowledge or participation of the member countries' peoples. In fact, Booker and North reveal that a strong tendency of the strain of Unionists which created the present Brussels regime has been to shun democracy by creating a supranational authority with no meaningful accountability to the people, whilst simultaneously subverting individual states' national sovereignty. A thoroughly absorbing and fascinating read, one essential for anyone interested in contemporary European politics. The defeat in France and the Netherlands of the EU constitution has not rendered this book irrelevant; indeed, it provides a warning about the accumulated power of a body still very much in being and still very zealous to reach the consummation of its endeavors.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent study of EU attempt to destroy Britain.......2004-04-13

This is a remarkable and well-researched history of the European Union from its origins immediately after the First World War to its present efforts to give itself a Constitution. The book lays bare the tactics of the quislings who are more loyal to the EU than to Britain, the Tory Europhiles, for example, who split their own party to assist the more Europhile Labour Party to win the 1997 election.

The EU is not about sharing or cooperation between sovereign governments. It is not inter-governmental, but supranational. The dividing line is the veto: where there are vetoes, there is inter-governmentalism; with vetoes gone, there is only a new, supranational form of government "beyond the control of national governments, politicians or electorates. Nation states, governments and parliaments could be left in place: but only so that they could gradually become subordinated to a new supranational government which was above them all." It has been a slow-motion coup d'etat.

The single currency was designed to unite the new state: as the EU's founder Jean Monnet said, "Via money Europe could become political in five years." German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer said, "Currency, security and constitution, those are the three essential components of the sovereignty of modern nation states, and the introduction of the euro constituted the first move towards their communitarisation in the EU." EU President Romano Prodi said, "The Single Market was the theme of the 80s; the single currency was the theme of the 90s; we must now face the difficult task of moving towards a single economy and political unity."

How has EU membership affected Britain? Our industries have become expendable; for example, at the time of entry, a senior civil servant in the Scottish fisheries department advised ministers not to go into any detail on the damage caused to the fishing industry: "The more one is drawn into such explanations, the more difficult it is to avoid exposing the weaknesses of the inshore fisheries position, the only answer to which may be that in the wider context they must be regarded as expendable."

We do not need the EU. The National Institute for Economic and Social Research found that withdrawing from the EU would not cost jobs. The Independent reported this as `8 million jobs could be lost if Britain quits EU' (18 February 2000). The NIESR's director, Dr Martin Weale, responded that the Independent's claim was "absurd ... pure Goebbels. In many years of academic research I cannot recall such a wilful distortion of the facts." In the subsequent discussion, Gordon Brown claimed, "750,000 British companies export from Britain to Europe": the government's own figure was 18,000.

The British working class's resolute hostility to the euro has defeated that EU attack. The EU's rulers and their quislings are coming back at us by trying to ram through their new Constitution and by imposing regionalisation. We must reject these assaults too.

                                Book Description

Controlling the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) became a very prominent environmental issue with the passage of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, and will continue to be an environmental priority through the next decade. No single technology has played as important a role in the control of VOC emissions as thermal oxidation. It has the ability to destroy VOCs in a one-step process that produces innocuous by-products. Design of Thermal Oxidation Systems for Volatile Organic Compounds provides all the information needed for developing a thermal oxidation design in a single reference. It covers design, operation, and maintenance as well as the principles behind the classification of volatile organic compounds as hazardous waste. The author explores the primary purpose of thermal oxidizers and discusses their limitations. The book provides: · practical, complete, and concise thermal oxidizer design principles · an outline of state-of-the-art design principles · a practical rather than theoretical approach · real industrial examples in each chapter With the new regulations that affect VOC emissions, engineers from such diverse fields as oil refining, chemical distillation and separation processes, and pharmaceutical industries will need to design and implement thermal oxidation systems. Design of Thermal Oxidation Systems for Volatile Organic Compounds provides a reference to the entire design process, from conceptualization to operation and maintenance.

4 out of 5 stars THE TEXT for Thermal Oxidation Design.......2000-08-17

Straight-forward, Easy-to-Use, this text offers basic design information for those new to the subject of thermal oxidation. Although lacking complete design detail, it offers excellent rule-of-thumb information for those needing a 85% design. Lacking is a cost estimation section and detail engineering information.
