Book Description
This book contains solutions to the most typical problems of thin elastic shells buckling under conservative loads. The linear problems of bifurcation of shell equilibrium are considered using a two-dimensional theory of the Kirchhoff-Love type. The explicit approximate formulas obtained by means of the asymptotic method permit one to estimate the critical loads and find the buckling modes.
The solutions to some of the buckling problems are obtained for the first time in the form of explicit formulas. Special attention is devoted to the study of the shells of negative Gaussian curvature, the buckling of which has some specific features. The buckling modes localized near the weakest lines or points on the neutral surface are constructed, including the buckling modes localized near the weakly supported shell edge. The relations between the buckling modes and bending of the neutral surface are analyzed. Some of the applied asymptotic methods are standard; the others are new and are used for the first time in this book to study thin shell buckling. The solutions obtained in the form of simple approximate formulas complement the numerical results, and permit one to clarify the physics of buckling.

Book Description
Ann Girard is a black woman, born to black parents. But she has blue eyes, straight hair and fair skin. Because of her own questionable features, she has experienced a problematic existence. Her life has now become even more complicated with the news of her unexpected pregnancy.
Ann wants to be elated about her impending arrival, but is plagued with the overwhelming concern about a future filled with cruelties afflicted upon her firstborn child because of his or her features. Her unfeigned worry is rooted in her own awkward experiences based on Âblackness. As she prepares for motherhood, Ann chronicles her first memories as a child through her passage into adulthood, and describes how she was forced to adjust while being catapulted back and forth between black neighborhoods and predominately white environments, constantly antagonized and questioned about her true Âblackness.Â
As Ann records her daunting experiences of trying to belong, she undergoes a re-birth, thus redefining her philosophies of everything she ever knew.
Readers are immediately pulled into this poignant tale based upon the complexities of intra-racial relations, as K. Broussard overlaps a heartfelt third person voice that details the experiences of an expectant mother, with an intimate forthright first person voice of Ann Âspeaking to her unborn child about her own painful journey and discovery of what looks like black.
Customer Reviews:
People aren't always as they appear.......2004-10-09
What is black? Can that one word truly sum up the range of our skin tones? Do the blue-eyed soul brother and sister really exist? Ann Girard would passionately tell you, "yes they do," because she is living proof. Although born to black parents, Ann inherited eyes, hair, skin tone, and other features unlike most people of our ethnicity - and she constantly received grief because of that.
Struggling to find her place in the grand scheme of things, Ann had to fight her way through school to prove herself. Black kids called her "pretender" while the white kids called her "confused." She wasn't black enough for some brothers yet still too black for other guys. Her mother, being an unquestionable shade of brown, couldn't identify with her daughter's struggles, and thereby failed to instill in Ann a sense of pride in who she was. Only throughout her pregnancy while journaling her past is she able to define "black" for herself and come to terms with the harsh reality of being in the middle.
WHAT LOOKS LIKE BLACK by K. Broussard serves as an open window inviting in the breeze of a different perspective on being black. We see firsthand Ann's thoughts, her experiences, and her pains. We are truly given the opportunity, in case we have never had one, to see just how difficult it can be for lighter complexioned African-Americans to get along in this country. Using the journal as an excellent way of segmenting into Ann's past, Broussard smoothly transitions between her character's past and the present without missing a beat. Sufficient amounts of drama, coupled with real life situations, like normal pregnancy issues, combine well with good character development to shape a satisfying read. However, I would like to have seen Ann's past connect more with her present and future. For example, almost none of the characters in her past are still present in her life. I would also like to have read more about her relationship with her husband, Gavin, past and present. Aside from the above-mentioned comments, and occasionally distracting grammar errors, WHAT LOOKS LIKE BLACK is an enlightening, enjoyable novel.

Familiar Topic, New Angle.......2004-03-09
I laughed outloud as I read this book on the airplane... Vivid descriptions of characters and the nuances of their personalities make this a very easy to read, candid and funny tale. Refreshing is the way the author attacks the stereotypes, myths and painful truths that are still so prominent in Black society today. I really enjoyed the mix of poignant moments with humorous dialogs of the 90's high school and Black college scene. If anyone is offended by this controversial story, then they have truly missed the message of the book.
And the Truth Shall Set You Free..........2004-02-15
This book is a must read for all!
It will defintely provide for a rich and intense conversation, to say the least, for book club members.
Individuals from all backgrounds will be able to relate to K.Broussard's honest and "real life" portrayal of the main character's development of identity and her life experiences. This book provides a wonderful way to begin the difficult conversation about racial identity and each culture's beliefs about it. We have all been judged at some point in our lives based upon the way we look, who our associates are, where we live, and how we speak. Ironically, our families are sometimes our harshest critics...
This is a great book for teachers, students as early as high school, and families. It will definitely challenge us to think about who we are, how we see ourselves and others, and how we treat one another as a result.
Enjoy!

Book Description
In News Junkie, the cutthroat worlds of journalism, politics, and high finance are laid bare by Jason Leopold, whose addictive tendencies led him from a life of drug abuse and petty crime to become an award-winning investigative journalist who exposed some of the biggest corporate and political scandals in recent American history.
Leopold broke key stories about the California energy crisis and Enron Corporation's infamous phony trading floor as a reporter for the Dow Jones Newswires. While he exposed high-rolling hucksters and double-dealing politicians, Leopold hid the secrets of his own felonious past, terrified that he would be discovered.
When the news junkie closed in on his biggest story-one that implicated a Bush administration member-he found himself pilloried by angry colleagues and the president's press secretary, all attempting to destroy his career.
Jason Leopold introduces us to an unforgettable array of characters, from weepy editors and love-starved politicos to steroid-pumped mobsters who intimidate the author into selling drugs and stolen goods.
In the end, News Junkie shows how a man once fueled by raging fear and self-hatred transforms his life, regenerated by love, sobriety and a new, harmonious career with the independent media.
Jason Leopold is a former Los Angeles bureau chief of Dow Jones Newswires. He has worked for the Los Angeles Times and has been a frequent guest on CNBC; his articles have appeared in The Nation, The Wall Street Journal, and The Financial Times. Leopold is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post, and currently writes for CounterPunch, Political Affairs, and Z Magazine.
Customer Reviews:
You don't have to be a "news junkie" to love this book.......2007-07-15
You don't have to read the paper or even watch the news to appreciate this well written book. Sure, it centers around a fantastic journalistic story. It is also a story of addiction/sobriety, overcoming child abuse and a love story. It is a dark and gritty book that is hard to put down.
Crazy stories.......2007-04-18
Leopold is a tough guy to like. He is a drug addict, a thief, and incredibly self-loathing. He is also a chronic complainer, believing that life has dealt him a terrible hand. Even when things in his life are going well, he manages to sabotage everything around him, almost losing his wife and career. Leopold's instability and ongoing war with himself make for incredibly entertaining stories.
To the heart.......2007-01-19
I liked News Junkie a lot. The writing style give the reader a sense of time and place. You feel as if you are in the newsroom with Leopold.
Jason Leopold is complex and a contradition. You like him and root for him, yet cringe at some of his actions. You wish the unfinished chapters of his life will bring happiness.
Gripping, Inspiring, Scary Autobiography of a No Holds Barred Investigative Journalist.......2006-10-18
This is a scary book. Jason Leopold was not a nice guy. He was a creep who would screw over anyone for drugs first, then news "scoops" later.
This is a story of a guy whose misdirected intelligence and passion totally screw him up for a number of years. Finally, he starts to get on a path where he's doing some good, but he's still stuck with some very nasty habits that get him in trouble and keep him sabotaging himself, in spite of becoming a serial award winning reporter.
As a writer I found Jason's book very inspiring. Not the nasty stuff-- but Jason describes the creative and energetic ways he went after stories. I've written for national magazines, with my own share of cover stories, and I've done some investigative leg and phone work. But Jason's descriptions of his efforts have already inspired me to go the extra distance to dig further into articles. The first article I applied this to rose to the top five articles of the month on my website, where we've published at least 400 articles so far this month.
Jason writes about how he was tough on his reporters, as an editor. insisting that they go out on the street, covering their beat, not waiting for news to come to them. That's inspired me to take a similar approach in my own writing.
If you're a reporter, this book is different than any I've seen. It's wild and wooly and while a bit apologetic, brutally honest.
Recently, post the writing of this book, Jason reported that Karl Rove was about to be indicted by Patrick Fitzgerald, the special prosecutor investigating the Plame CIA case. It didn't happen. Rove was never indicted. Now you could just write Jason off as an incompetent. But you could also wonder whether Rove got to Fitzgerald, or, that someone fed Jason bad info that was designed to set him up, because he was getting too close to the truth. I don't know what the answer is. Frankly, having published his report, I was embarassed by the article being wrong. When I got the word, I headlined the article. It didn't feel very good. But maybe that's what was supposed to happen-- what was intended by the people who set him up. I'm not apologizing for him. But I'm keeping my mind open to the possibility that the people who brought us the threat of WMDs in Iraq, who pulled one over on Colin Powell, the majority of the senate and most of the US could have also pulled one over on this news junkie.
I see Jason as a man who can make a difference. I'm glad he's working for the progressive cause now. The right wing fights very, very dirty. They lie, cheat, and since they run the mainstream media, they propagandize, cover up and gloss over news that should be covered that isn't.
We need more Jason Leopolds who are willing to do what it takes to dig up the truth. And we should expect that when he uses his enormous cojones to take on incredibly powerful, influential and wealthy players, he will occasionally be set up,occasionally stabbed in the back by editors, occasionally made to look bad, so his good work is questioned.
Bottom line, this gritty autobiography tells a tale of a man who becomes a drug addicted, dealing, thieving criminal who quits abusing, cleans up his act and really achieves some significant successes in his life, not leaving all his flaws behind, but steadily making progress.
It's a great read.
About the inspiring part-- one must be selective about what one is inspired by. I chose to be inspired by his creative, energetic approach to digging up stories. [...].
I find it interesting and extremely unusual that there are, at the writing of this review, a dozen reviews, most of the positive. All the positive, four or five star reviews have been rated as unhelpful by two to one. My guess is that some of the right wingers who have been attacking the author in the blogoverse have decided to "tar" the positive reviews. I expect the same will happen to this one. The fact is, I doubt that these review commenters have read the book, or care to. It is dishonest to take this approach.
An incredible autobiography of a genuinely hazardous career .......2006-06-11
News Junkie is the engaging memoir and personally revealing story of Jason Leopold and his willingness to risk an unhealthy and destructive life in exchange as an investigative reporter. An incredible autobiography of a genuinely hazardous career that came to involve selling drugs and stolen goods, News Junkie carries readers through the riveting true-life tale of a reporter's daily job dedicated to exposing corporate-crooks and politician, facing his own illegal behavior brought about by his own felonious behavior, his pressing need for regaining personal sobriety, and the impact upon his emotional well being of what he had been continuously confronted with while in the pursuit of his profession. With its superbly presented candor, News Junkie is very highly recommended reading both as a memoir offering unique insights into the mind and life of an investigative journalist, and as a "slice of life" window into the stories and personalities behind headline stories of corruption and crime.

Book Description
As Hitler's dreams of a Thousand Year Reich crumbled in the face of overwhelming assaults from both East and West in the first months of 1945, the heavily outnumbered German armed forces were still capable of fighting with a tenacity and professionalism at odds with the desperate circumstances. While Hitler fantasized about deploying divisions and armies that had long since ceased to exist, boys of fifteen, officer cadets, sailors and veterans of the Great War joined the survivors of shattered formations on the front line. Leading historian Tony Le Tissier gives a German perspective to the mayhem and bloodshed of the last months of the Second World War in Europe. Teenaged Flak auxiliaries recount their experiences alongside veteran Panzergrenadiers attempting to break out of Soviet encirclement. Struggles between the military, industry and the Nazi Party for influence over the defenders of Berlin contrast with a key participant's account of Goebbel's abortive attempt to conclude a cease-fire with the Soviets. This is fascinating reading for anybody interested in the ordinary soldier's experience of the culminating battles in central Europe in 1945.
Customer Reviews:
Gripping story of the collapse of a nation.......2007-09-04
Tremendous group of personal recollections of various soldiers fighting for Germay at the end of WWII. A braod range of perspectives are presented from that of 15 yo flak crew relatively removed from the front lines to seasoned SS non-coms fighting their way out of a russian pocket to a staff officer involved in the surrender of Berlin.
The way the SS maintained discipline even after they knew all was lost was gripping, and really provided a different view of this organization.
Likewise the loyality of young flak soldiers to theie units also provided another example of batlles being won and lost to people who are first loyal to thier comrades over thier general officier or country.
The book is well footnoted, but probably could have used a few more clarifications.
The postscripts regarding what hapened to each person was good, but a larger postscript on treatment after capture would have also been good. (I.e., some soldiers were quickly released, while others, specifically the SS, were held for some time, and the Russians released many captives only to later arrest them, and held some prisoners for 10 years. Some explaination of this would have been good.)
However these are nits and do not take away from the strength of this book.
Excellent Compilation of Personal Wehrmacht Recollections.......2007-08-17
Author Tony Le Tissier's "With Our Backs to Berlin" was an outstanding collection of personal histories of German soldiers (and one Russian) fighting in and around Berlin at the end of World War II.
The same author's "Death Was Our Companion" is a similar excellent, although somewhat broader based, compilation of the personal recollections of German soldiers in a variety of rearguard actions toward the end of the Second World War, primarily around Berlin.
Also included is an enlightening recollection by a German Army Colonel who was directly involved in the surrender negotiations with the Russians. This alone, depicting the state of events at the very end in Berlin, immediately after Hitler's death, is of immense historical value and worth the price of the book by itself. For example, on one occasion when the Colonel is trying to get through his own lines to the Soviets to conduct negotiations, he is met with catcalls that "Germans never surrender" and he was a "traitor". Earlier, he invokes an order from Martin Bormann to obtain an escort to Goebbels to discuss the status of the negotiations but is told "only SS orders" apply here.
These recollections (over a dozen in all) are written in the same engaging first-hand writing style the author used in "Our Backs to Berlin" that draws the reader into the action.
There are a few minor drawbacks: (1) a couple of the recollections here (and several of the two dozen or so photos) are also included in the author's "Slaughter at Halbe", however, the recollections in "Slaughter at Halbe" were presented in a disjointed and piecemeal manner but here they are told in full and the result is a more complete account from their perspective; (2) several maps are included but they are not always that easy to decipher, however, this may be the result of the printing process (i.e., paper and ink used) and not the maps themselves; (3) the index contains several mistakes, listing names correctly but the pagination is wrong.
The book also includes excellent footnotes by the author explaining many facets (places, persons, events) of each story. (One exception is the author claims in a footnote that Martin Bormann committed suicide while attempting a break-out from the Reichs Chancellery the night of May 1-2, 1945. This was news to me as I had always thought his whereabouts after the war, much less his death, were never confirmed; although I am aware that a claim was made in 1972 that his body was found, I do not believe that was ever verified to everyone's satisfaction (i.e., countries outside of West Germany) as there were claims the West German government was engaged in a cover-up.)
Overall, this is a very absorbing account of many facets of the end of the Third Reich. Essential reading for students of World War II and Nazi Germany.

Book Description
Aggressive law enforcement is devastating women of color and their communities. Yet the mainstream reproductive rights movement, largely dominated by white women and consumed with protecting the right to abortion, has failed to respond adequately to the policing, criminalization, and incarceration of large numbers of poor people and people of color.
Policing the National Body places issues of race, class, and gender at the center of its reproductive rights and social justice agenda by focusing on a key concern among women of color and poor communities today: the difficulty of maintaining families and sustaining community in the face of increasing criminalization.
Women of color have independently articulated a broad reproductive rights agenda embedded in issues of equality and social justice, while keenly tuned to the state's role in the reproduction and regulation of women's bodies. In an effort to protect their reproductive rights, they have challenged coercive population policies, demanded access to safe and accessible birth control and asserted their right to economic and political resources to maintain healthy children.
Policing the National Body discusses the policing of bodies by examining the experiences of women prisoners, women with AIDS in correctional facilities, women in systems of prostitution, immigrant women, women of color, and young women with a keen awareness of their multiple identities and oppressions. This groundbreaking anthology is one the few works to link the reproductive rights and anti-enforcement violence movements.
