This book has been a great help to me for Botany, especially Botany labs. It has pictures on the micro- and macroscopic levels of plants with captions that label and describe function. A great book to have because it increases course comprehension.

          Book Description

The other little pigs snuggled and snoozed, but little Pig Figwort could not get to sleep! "What I need is an adventure," Pig Figwort decides, and he's off for a dive in his submarine. But no one on the ocean floor wants to have fun; the mermaids and starfish are sleepy. So are the polar bears and seals at the North Pole. The moon pigs in outer space, however, are ready to play with Figwort until he just can't play anymore and goes home. "That was so much fun that I don't think I'll ever go to sleep again," says Figwort, as he snuggles up with all the other little pigs and falls fast asleep. Dedicated "to all sleepless piglets around the world," this book is a wonderful bedtime read-aloud.

Not bad as a directory, this book fails to deliver any heat whatsoever. You just don't get a sense of what really goes on at these places and the reviews are so perfunctory and generally fluffy. We need a real insider's guide to sex in the city. Hopefully somebody will do one soon.

4 out of 5 stars A cheeky guide that New Yorkers can trust.......1999-11-08

This tiny volume is filled with tantalizing tidbits -- from corset shops to strip shows to S&M schools. Hailing from a tiny town in Wyoming, I was surprised to learn about all of the *LEGAL* fun that can be had in the Big Apple! I've already tried several of the places recommended, and plan to visit many more in the near future.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC user-friendly directory of sex in the big apple!.......1999-09-27

While there are other books that cover the same topic, Sexy New York City is the first to put it together in a user-friendly style with quick references. While it would be nice if they actually rated each of the places on a scale, their informative and funny descriptions give you a good sense of each establishment.

1 out of 5 stars Haven't we seen this before........1999-08-31

Essentially a compilation based on other sources, Sexy New York is not particularly sexy, nor does it give readers much insight into the establishments it describes. It works best as a directory, leaving it up to the consumer to find out for himself what is truly sexy in the Big Apple.

This excellent little wire-bound book is particularly easy to use in the field--and it lies flat on a lab bench. The book provides brief sections on introduction to aquatic insects, marine insects, frequently encountered non-insects, insect morphology, collecting and preserving, use of aquatic insects in water quality work, a section on how to use the book, and references. The bulk of the book consists of a key to orders followed by a series of keys to families or, in some cases, subfamilies. For the benefit of amateurs like myself, drawings are numerous and clear and a good deal of information about distribution, ecology, and appearance is provided in the keys. If one is getting started in benthic macroinvertebrate surveys or has students doing high school science projects on aquatic insects, this little book provides a lot of bang for the buck.

4 out of 5 stars Aquatic insects and biological monitoring.......2000-10-26

Lehmkuhl does an excellent job with discription of life cycles, morphology, and how insects are used in biological monitoring. The bibliography is extensive and organized by major family and order. This is a good text for beginning aquatic biologists and teachers that want to start pollution monitoring of streams and rivers, however I would have liked to have seen more detail on collection methods, specifically kick net methods. Kick nets are build specifically for this method of collection and provide a better means than the "window screen" method described. It would have also been nice to go into the methodology of where and how to perform sampling. The only other improvement I would make would to have included more drawings of entire insects(ie. various genera and species of Plecoptera) and some photographs would have been a nice supplement as well. Otherwise a very well done and helpful text.

                            Book Description

A set in complex Euclidean space is called C-convex if all its intersections with complex lines are contractible, and it is said to be linearly convex if its complement is a union of complex hyperplanes. These notions are intermediates between ordinary geometric convexity and pseudoconvexity. Their importance was first manifested in the pioneering work of André Martineau from about forty years ago. Since then a large number of new related results have been obtained by many different mathematicians. The present book puts the modern theory of complex linear convexity on a solid footing, and gives a thorough and up-to-date survey of its current status. Applications include the Fantappié transformation of analytic functionals, integral representation formulas, polynomial interpolation, and solutions to linear partial differential equations.

I thought the story "Silence" was very good, surprisingly interesting and engaging given its age. Its plot was not unlike many modern tales, which I found interesting also.

If I have one complaint, it is that the translator used some seemingly too modern vocabulary in her translation, like "hit the road," though I suppose there could be something quite similar in old French usage.

The most amusing part is the introduction, that among other things, mentioned that the story shows a hatred for women. They describe insults from the story against women. As a woman, I thought "Yeah, seems about right for a book written in that time." But lo and behold, turns out, the writer threw only as many insults towards evil women as he lavished great praises upon the women of good virtue. And he even said as much at the end, almost as if he were speaking in reply to the introduction. Didn't do him much good, though, they didn't listen. ;)

About the story, it was much better than I expected, with lots of excitement (never a dull moment) and strong characters. My main disappointment was the end, but I'll leave that to be discovered.

                            Cheers!

While another review has stated a similarity between this work and Homer's Odyssey, I would like to state that I did not see any connection between the two stories.

On the other hand, this is a wonderful story containing dragons, true love, anthropomorphic personifications of abstract concepts such as Nature and Nurture, wars, romance, thought provoking commentary, and humor. The poet inserts his own comments on life, society, and the behavior of the characters throughout the work to such an extant that he is as much a character as anyone else. Furthermore, this thirteenth century romance contains a French female warrior who predates Joan of Arc by approximately a century. It is amazing to think that this work was nearly lost to time by being hidden in a box labeled "old papers - no value."

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. My only complaints were concerning the translation rather than the text itself. There were a number of spelling errors in the English text. Some references to notes on the translation were mismarked or missing. Also, as someone who can translate a bit of Old French, I found that while the majority of the translation was fine, there were occasional places where I wondered how she arrived at the word that she chose. Also, while the line by line translation in a facing page format made it easy to switch back and forth between English and Old French, I found many of her English phrasings to be awkward in that while they would look fine as a sentence, they did not scan well in a poetry format.

Still, those were minor quibbles over all. I heartily recommend this book to anyone who enjoys medieval literature like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight or Chretien de Troyes' romances.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable story of feminsm, heroism, symbolism; a classic.......1997-11-20

I had the luck to read this book in a literature class, and it has become a very personal love of mine. The story is beautiful and the characters are so full of symbolism; it is a feminine version of Homer's "The Odyssey", but with a feminist theme. The history behind the book is to intriguing that anyone interested in Classical Literature Studies, French Literature, Feminist Literature, or a good story, would quickly fall in love with its beauty as I have. I am currently attempting to contact publishers in hope that someone may realize its importance as a mythological masterpiece, and hope this review may spark some interest. If De Beauvior were born 500 years earlier this would be her "Second Sex". I believe in the story and its universal importance. (I give it a 9 because it was originally written as an Old French poem, which may be why it is so inaccessible--very few people can read Old French--but the story itself is priceless)

In lieu of a memoir, All the Best, George Bush collects correspondence and diary entries from the former U.S. president to show, as he says, "what my own heartbeat is, what my values are, what has motivated me in life." The letters begin in 1942--when, fresh out of high school, Bush volunteered for U.S. Navy flight school--and continue to the brink of the 21st century, as the retired chief executive worries about the Melissa virus infecting his office's server and keeping his visiting grandchildren in line. ("I realize," he muses, "Keep the freezer door closed from now on and I mean it lacks the rhetorical depth of This will not stand or Read my lips.") All the Best hits all the highlights of Bush's career, from the Texas oil business to his role as ambassador to China, then CIA director, vice president under Ronald Reagan, and finally president himself. Along the way, he reveals a personality that is at turns compassionate, respectful, silly, doting, and resolute--a man for whom being a father and a grandfather matters as much as, and maybe even more than, being leader of the free world. Fans and detractors alike will find in All the Best an intimate human portrait that offers as sure a self-definition of Bush's personal life as A World Transformed did his presidential career.

                            Book Description

The most intimate and revealing look at one of America's most private public figures.

Though reticent in public, George Bush has openly shared his private thoughts in his correspondence throughout his life. Fortunately, since the former president does not plan to write his autobiography, this collection of letters, diary entries, and memos, with his accompanying commentary, will fill that void.

Organized chronologically, the volume begins with eighteen-year-old George's letters to his parents during World War II, when, at the time he was commissioned, he was the youngest pilot in the Navy. Readers will gain insights into Bush's career highlights -- the oil business, his two terms in Congress, his ambassadorship to the U.N., his service as an envoy in China, his tenure with the Central Intelligence Agency, and of course, the vice presidency, the presidency, and the postpresidency. They will also observe a devoted husband, father, and American. Ranging from a love letter to Barbara and a letter to his mother about missing his daughter Robin after her death from leukemia to a letter to his children two weeks before Nixon's resignation to one written to them just before the beginning of Desert Storm, the writings are remarkable for their candor, humor, and poignancy.

As the Bushes continue to emerge as a major political family, this portrait of its unassuming patriarch is timely and important. That George Bush is allowing this much of the collection to be published is remarkable in itself. All the Best, George Bush provides a surprisingly intimate and insightful portrayal of the forty-first president of the United States.

As the author writes in his Preface: "So what we have here are letters from the past and present. Letters that are light and hopefully amusing. Letters written when my heart was heavy or full of joy. Serious letters. Nutty letters. Caring letters, and rejoicing letters....It's all about heartbeat."

Through reticent in public, George Bush has openly shared himself in his private correspondence throughout his entire life. Organized chronologically, this volume contains Bush's letters, diary entries, and memos--with his commentary--constituting a portrait of the former president that should suffice nicely until such time as he chooses to write his autobiography.

3 out of 5 stars George HW Bush in his words.......2006-03-27

George Bush (41st President, the father) wrote his autobiography while he was Vice President. After he left the Presidency, he decided to not write his memoirs (unlike other presidents) and let historians decide how his presidential years were. This is a big disappointment because it is always fun to read a Presidential Memoir when they come out, and also to learn about the different periods when they are a President. Fortunately, Bush was coaxed into collecting all his letters he had sent out to other people throughout his life and making it this book. I would say that the best part of the book is when you read the letters he sent out to various world leaders like Deng Xiaoping after the Tiannamen Square Massacre, and to Gorbachev after the Lithuania uprising. The period during the first Persian Gulf war is also interesting. You actually get to read the letters that Bush wrote, and this is quite a difference from other presidential memoirs where the author usually says in a line or two what he discussed with other world leaders.

Also interesting are some of the letters he wrote to his children, including George W Bush. There is a letter from Bush the father to his children, written just before Desert Storm, where he talks about how sad and difficult it is for him to send US soldiers in harms way.

The letters to Bush's mom where he talks about his fiancee Barbara is also interesting, but I was more interested in his presidential years. To me, the book became interesting after he started being appointed to various posts by different Presidents, e.g. Ambassidor to China by Nixon, CIA director by Ford, etc.

However, as written by Kitty Kelly, Bush is a bit of a person who kisses up to people when the time is right. For example, while Bush was Chairman of the Republican Party, until a day before Nixon announces his resignation, Bush is in full support of him. Only then (and probably after he hears that Nixon is going to resign) does he send a letter to Nixon saying maybe it is time for him to resign.

I think in future editions of this book, his letters to George W Bush during his son's presidency should be added, and also letters where he describes his feelings about Bill Clinton should be added too, since Clinton and he have become best pals.

Overall an okay book. Would still prefer a typical Presidential Memoir though.

But, still, don't waste your money. If you must read this, get it from the library and buy a book here from a real American like Al Franken.

4 out of 5 stars Good reading if you are a student of Bush or American Politics in the 20th century after WWII.......2006-03-05

This is a collection of letters, memos, and diary entries by President George W. Bush that were written throughout his life. They include official documents, but also notes to his families and friends, as well as notes for his own use. Some of them are of national importance while others are humorous or personal.

You will want to read this book if you are a student of the Presidents, especially if you are interested in the Bush 41 or the Bush family. However, it also offers information for students of other topics. For example, Bush was the Chairman of the RNC during Watergate and the material provided here is very interesting. I think the letter he wrote his children on July 23, 1974 is as fair and balanced an assessment of Nixon and Watergate as you are likely to find. Of course, Bush did not know Nixon was also lying to him and the entire Country at the time he wrote the note. When the smoking gun tape comes out everything changes, and Bush's comments to Haig and others are agonized, but to the point as is his final letter to Nixon the day before the President announced he would resign the presidency.

The book also provides a chronology that will help you remember what Bush was doing at any given time. The chapters are organized around various posts Bush has held or key periods in his life. You will also want to dip into index to find certain people and events for review.

He comes across as an honorable man with a deep sense of tradition with political ambitions, but within certain bounds.

5 out of 5 stars The Daughter of a WWII Vet..........2006-01-27

First let me put my bias right up front. I love the Bush family. George the 1st is a decent, honest man....a man of privilege, but a man of honor. He wasn't my favorite president; and I wasn't sure I would like this book.

This collection of letters is *marvelous*!...and a tribute to the WWII generation and generations before who were letter writers. I have a story in letters from and to my own father from the time he entered the Army in 1943 through his being wounded in France and meeting my mother in a hospital in Kansas just before the war ended in 1945. George H. W. Bush's book made me laugh and cry. It gave me a new admiration for the "man". If you love the WWII generation, read this book. If you don't know much about that generation you HAVE to read this book! You NEED to know about them. They epitimize America at it's best...

4 out of 5 stars The Lost Art Of Letter Writing.......2005-09-04

Former President George H.W. Bush is prolific letter writer, and in All The Best, this public figure allows us a peek into the sometimes very private side of his life in this collection of his personal correspondence. Many of these dispatches date back sixty years, and they paint a picture of the former President that no autobiography quite could.

The Bush revealed by his letters is an idealist in his youth, who joins the military out of a strong desire to serve his nation. He tells of his life as a Navy pilot, writes love letters home to the woman he eventually marries, and tells her in one forceful letter from the front of the justice he hopes finds those who carry out combat atrocities in the name of nationalism.

Bush later becomes a husband and father (to a first son nicknamed "Googie") and relocates from New England to the Texas oil country. In one humorous letter from this period, Bush writes local law enforcement apologizing for speeding and asking that in the face of his repentance his fine be repealed. (It wasn't.) Through hundreds of letters that cover most of the twentieth century, we see that George Bush's life is often exciting, though occasionally visited by tragedy, as with the loss of his pre-school-aged daughter Robin. I personally found the writings that covered the domestic and business sides of Mr. Bush's life more interesting than the ones that dealt with his duties as Congressman, UN Ambassador, Head of the CIA, and Republican Party, Ambassador to China, Vice President, and finally President of the United States. The most touching of Bush's writings were the letters he penned to his grandchildren at the times of their births.

One of the most inviting aspects of this book is that since it has no linear plotline to follow, it may be perused in random fashion without diminishing its purpose. If one wishes information about the era of the (first) Bush Presidency, that is set off from, say, the chapters that cover Bush's life as a private citizen.

The practice of letter writing is either being enhanced by the presence of email, or being undermined by it. However one views the topic, there's little denying that there is an art to authoring a letter, and the forty-first US President is a lifelong master.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting View of a Public Man.......2003-07-12

My wife bought this book for me several years ago and it has taken me a while to get through it. It's not a thriller that you pick up and just can't put down, but in its own way, it is uniquely interesting.

George H. W. Bush was a prolific letter writer, something that is truly becoming a lost art. It is said that he had the most active rolodex of any man to hold the office of President.

Never known for his skillful speaking ability, Bush preferred to communicate through letters and this work will certainly give historians a unique insight into a fascinating life.

They always say, "like father, like son" and George H. W. Bush's two sons who are active in politics seem to have inherited similar traits. Jeb Bush, the Florida governor, is said to respond to over 100 e-mails personally each day, and George W. Bush, the President, was said to be an e-mail addict. (That is, until he became President and e-mails become subject to subpeonas).

Don't run out and buy this, but if you ever have a down day in the library, pick it up and read a few of the letters. It will probably show you a side of the man that you never knew existed.

Unfortunately, this beautifully written, morally reflective book was inadequately researched. Many of the author's anecdotes were simply culled from secondary sources (some of questionable reliability), and the book even contains lengthy sections of entirely unfootnoted assertions. Sax seems unaware of major recent work on Nazi Germany of direct relevance to the issues he addresses - Christopher Browning's "Ordinary Men," Ian Kershaw's "Hitler Myth", Paul Weindling's "Health, Race and German Politics" and Kurt Schleunes', "A Twisted Road to Auschwitz" are all missing from his bibliography. As a result, his book unfortunately adds little to contemporary scholarly understanding of the Nazi regime, despite the novelty and importance of his initial questions.

5 out of 5 stars Valuable insight into the Nazi world view.......2001-06-28

In this useful and interesting book, Sax discusses the treatment of animals in the Third Reich, but the focus is broader than that; he also explores the way that metaphors from the animal kingdom became an important way of expressing the Nazi world view. In the twisted ideology of the Third Reich, there was no important differentiation between "human" and "animal" life. Instead, the Nazis tended to look on the world as a continuum. The highest position on the continuum belonged to healthy humans the "Aryan race." Animals could be found lower down on that continuum, while lower still were the humans who were considered inferior because of their racial identity or mental handicaps. As Sax put it in the introductory material, "In their nihilistic perspective the important distinction was not between "humans" and "aniimals" .... It was between victor and vanquished, between master and slave. The underlying paradigm was ... that of predator and prey." This attitude reflected the viewpoint in National Socialism that depicted nature as "a harsh and implacable power," demanding obedience.

                                      Book Description

Histories of revolutions often focus on military, political, or economic upheavals but sometimes neglect to connect these larger events to the daily lives of "ordinary" people. Yet the peoples' perception that "things are worse than before" can topple revolutionary governments, as shown by the recent defeat of the Sandinista regime in Nicaragua and the governments of Eastern Europe. Providing the kind of prosaic, revealing details that more formal histories have excluded, My Car in Managua offers an objective, often humorous description of the great difficulties and occasional pleasures of life in Nicaragua during the Sandinista revolution.

During a year's work (1985-1986) at the Instituto Centroamericano de Administración de Empresas (INCAE), Forrest Colburn purchased a dilapidated car—and with it an introduction to everyday life in Nicaragua. His discoveries of the length of time required to register the car (approximately six weeks), the impossibility of finding spare parts (except when U.S. dollars were applied to the search), and the fact that "anyone getting into a car in Managua can be charged a small fee [for car watching] by anyone else" all suggest the difficulties most Nicaraguans faced living in a devastated economy.

Drawing on experiences from visits throughout the revolutionary period (1979-1989), Colburn also sheds light on how the Revolution affected social customs and language, gender roles and family relationships, equality and authority, the availability of goods and services, the status of ethnic minorities, and governmental and other institutions. Illustrations by Nicaragua's celebrated political cartoonist Róger Sánchez Flores enliven the lucid text.

4 out of 5 stars Just barely chugging along in Nicaragua.......2000-10-26

Once upon a time, as I remember, there was a country called Nicaragua. It was in the news every day. Revolutionaries had taken it over. This was perceived as a great threat to our nation, (the USA)---a well-known military pushover with a decrepit economy which could easily have been totally destroyed by this Central American Marxist powerhouse. We armed the opposition and a war ensued in which the poor killed the poor. Russians, Bulgarians, and even Libyans appeared in Central America. People came visiting from everywhere who dreamed that Latin American countries could develop without being dominated by Uncle Sam. Even Salman Rushdie wrote a book about it. Suddenly, an election was held---hey, I thought Nicaragua was totalitarian---and the revolutionaries lost. Nicaragua faded from the news immediately and nothing more has ever been heard of the place. That's the media biz.

MY CAR IN MANAGUA stands out like a lighthouse on a dark stormy night. An eminently reasonable man spent a lot of time there and wrote an academic study of the place. This is not it. Colburn captures the flavor of Nicaragua in those tumultuous years here, describing daily life and survival tactics in easily-flowing prose. No cant, no rhetoric, no animosity. In a brief book he covers a vast variety of subjects; from car purchase and maintenance to accounting and management techniques on "revolutionary" cattle ranches. You can find out what kind of toothpaste was available in Sandinista Nicaragua (Bulgarian) or how to tell a middle class home in Managua (it had cement floors). Everything is described with understanding and with a sense of humor. The book is illustrated with drawings by a famous Nicaraguan cartoonist of the time, Róger Sánchez Flores, though I did not find them exceptional. We plainly see the economic mess created by a revolution that was far more successful in breaking down old social barriers and empowering the common man. Colburn never harps on this, just notes various unvarnished facts. The affection that the author feels for this impoverished, exhausted country is obvious. For a commonsense view of 1980s Nicaragua that is enjoyable, well-written and insightful, you cannot do better than this book. And it makes you wonder, not for the first time perhaps, if the USA's style of foreign policy will ever change.

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding, humorous writingýa small tour de force........1999-03-19

For those familiar with Colburn's Post-Revolutionary Nicaragua: State, Class and the Dilemmas of Agrarian Policy, this slim volume will come as a pleasnt surprise indeed. Void of academic pedantry, My Car in Managua delivers us from economic tables and shows us the life of everyday Nicaraguans. Colburn does this with splendid humor and tight, concise writing. Illustrated by noted Nicaraguan cartoonist Roger Sanchez Flores, the entire text charms from beginning to end. Without saying so directly, Colburn exposes the void that was U.S. foregin policy throughout the 1980s-a goal easily enough achieved, but seldom with such humble grace.

                                            Book Description

Brazil's environmental problems, especially Amazon deforestation, have attracted considerable attention, particularly in the developed world. Peter May brings a sharper and more critical focus to bear on this topic by offering a general overview and seven microeconomic case studies on particular problems in the Brazilian environment.

Focusing on discrete resource problems at a subnational scale, this practical book shows how work at the state and local level can lead to more sustainable development policies not only in Brazil but also in many other developing nations. Uniting specific Brazilian applications of more general principles of natural resource and environmental valuation to support policy-making for land use and economic development, Natural Resource Valuation and Policy in Brazil shows how such methods support efforts to incorporate environmental concerns in decision-making processes.
